Watch Penn’s false shuffle when he gets the cards back at 3:30. The full deck is actually half of a deck which is duplicated. Steve had the same set of cards that Penn had. Penn never shuffles his cards (false shuffle), keeping his set always in the same order. When Pen takes the cards back from Steve, he places Steve’s set on top, but then immediately cuts Steve’s set to the bottom and keeps them that way. Teller has memorized the half deck order (only 26 cards). When Steve tells everyone which card he picked, Teller simply counts to that card using Penn’s set, which is on top, & it will never be more than 26 down from the top. Easy Peazy.

This is a 2 part trick. Penn uses sleight of hand to keep his pre-arranged portion of the deck on top (which are the same cards that Steve has to choose from.) After Steve chooses, it doesn't matter how much he mixes them up because Penn will keep his top half in a certain order by doing a magician's shuffle. He places Steve's portion on top of his own, but then proceeds to do a magician's 3 part split to move his section back to the top. When he hands the deck over to Steve, and after Steve announces the card, Teller has the order of Penn's partial deck memorized to know when to pull the correct card. Very clever. I give the kudos to Teller for the memory task. No, I'm not a magician - just observant.
Steve's half has the same cards as the top of Penn's half, in a different order. It's not a traditional deck. When fanned out for Steve quickly, the camera doesn't pan across to see multiples. Steve is just hit with a mash-up of shuffled cards to his point of view.

The whole trick is actually staged. You will know that after Teller threw the 6th card towards the audience. The floor have 11 cards where there should only be 5. It was done by editing the part where the Ace is already on top. Those cards are the reveal that Penn sarcastically mentioned they will not give, in order to show the magic circle they deserve to have that membership, by doing a trick flawlessly.
And yet people in this exact comments section who have tried to "explain the secret" still failed to grasp how the trick is done. Really just goes to show how many people can be confidently incorrect and still walk through life thinking that they're amazing for "figuring it out".
The magic circle basically said that they were perfect, amazing, worthy of being in the circle and had been for a long time. But actually being in the circle involves a sharing of information, hence why there is a rule of anyone that shares being removed from it. Or not being allowed in. It's one of those, sucks but makes sense, still take it as a compliment, deals.
Yup, like when I try to go to work ass naked. My boss is like, "Look, you're a good worker and I want you to work your shift, but you gotta go home and put some clothes on."
As if Penn and Teller needed other magicians explaining their tricks to them, right? On their show they bust almost anyone in 5 minutes after having seen the trick once.
The best magic makes you feel mentally impaired, when you learn the method. Thats the thrill if doing it; pulling something so stupid, you cant possibly get away with it.
Personally I think Penn and Teller are rockstars. With that said I'm old school and I still love Magic and the feeling of being surprised. What I don't like is the feeling of being conned. This makes Penn and Teller the perfect combination of Magic and entertainment for me. My only criticism is they seem to have a routine of tricks that they have shown for many years now and I would enjoy seeing some newer ones. This is allowing for the possibility that they saved the new tricks for their Vegas Act.
The explanation is simple : 1. There is only 26 different cards within the decks 2. Penn splits the deck half 3. He gave the top half to Steve 4. He made Steve to think 1 card from the Top Deck, and make him shuffle the deck 5. Penn also shuffle the deck according to the sequence he wants OR he never shuffled the deck, and only make us to think he shuffled the deck 6. He put the Top Half deck from Steve and return to step no 5 but this this time, Penn makes the bottom half to get into the Top deck 7. He put the deck back into Steve's hand 8. Teller only need to act as if he feels the card, but in his memory he already memorized the sequence of the bottom half
@@prasiddhatimilsina926 I will correct him. Pen changed the deck and gave Steve the half which has same cards as Pen's half. Teller knows the order of the Pen' half. Steve shuffled the cards but Pen never gave this half to Teller.
Here’s what I’ve decided for how Teller knows where the card is: At 3:36 when Penn “shuffles” he’s actually just swapping the bottom half of the deck with the top half, and that the half that Steve has is a random order of the exact same cards as what Penn has, which are in a specific sequence. Steve picks a card that’s in the 26 that he’s holding, and teller just has to go through half the deck until he gets to the right card.
On Penn's podcast he said that something went wrong the first time they did this trick so they did it again. That's why Steve Harvey was so thrilled. Penn said they would have been willing to air the failure but it was the show that decided to film it again.
Trick solution: There was two sets of each card, the half that was given to Steve’s ended up on the bottom of the deck after Steve chose a card and shuffled the deck, which means penn’s half which was never shuffled was on the top half, before the show teller just memorized the 26 cards in order and chose whichever card Steve said.
I love how he talks about forcing, and I'm assuming the deck has doubles so Steve can shuffle all he likes and it doesn't matter because a subset has been forced on him. Then they talk about trying to forget a sequence when I bet Teller knows the order of the duplicates Penn had put on top with the false cutting. All fits with the stated goal. Love this kinda crap even if I'm wrong.
shoutrite91 an incomplete idiot? Lol I'm not sure if thats better or worse than being a complete idiot. Haha. If you DIDNT say that on purpose, I would just claim you did. :P
After Penn received the cards back from Steve, he put them back in order for Teller. They both memorized the deck so no matter what card he picked, they know where it is in the deck.
@@MrCrystalm8 The deck of cards is not a normal deck. Penn gave Steve half, and kept half himself. Each of their packets contain equivalent cards. Penn's packet is in a memorized order, top to bottom. Teller knows the order. Steve can think of any card in his packet, no force. When he reveals it, teller knows what position in penn's packet it is. So when Penn takes back the shuffled cards from steve, he loads his stacked packet on top of the deck while doing some false cuts. Then teller simply knows when they're at the chosen card. my best guess
The fact that it was the next card, not the one's Teller touched, that makes it so impressive as well. Like how on earth could you tell it's the next card?? You haven't even touched the deck 😭(I know there's a trick but they know how to put on a show. Like they Fooled Me 🙃)
@@adikickass84 his red nail is in memory of his mother, she told him once that he needed to keep his hands clean because people would be looking at them when he performs, so now he always has one painted.
When Steve gave Penn the cards back, Penn put his portion of cards on his. 'The order will not change' Teller knows the order by heart. When Steve says it was the Ace of Heart, all Teller has to do is to count until Ace of Hearts. Besides Penn and Teller have said that there are more subtle ways to mark cards than just writing an X on them.
@@charliefowler7612 This is plausible, since Penn manipulates the whole deck before handling it back to steve.... we could re-order the deck somehow, but I have no clue how.
The X mark on this trick is the gambit throw from teller. That sends the signal to penn to ask steve again about his card thereby stopping exactly where it is.
I know the trick. Notice the "unneeded" shuffle Penn does at 3:33. Before the trick started.. they had two different sets of cards from two different decks. One set is what Harvey sees, which is exactly the same as what Penn is hiding somewhere else.. this set has the same sequence exactly to what Teller remembers before the show. Harvey hands back the set after his shuffled, and at 3:33 Penn places that hidden unshuffled set back over the top.
I like that he says “we try to make people forget the sequence of events” right as he makes Harvey say which card he picked before teller removes the others, and then makes him say it out loud again as if he hadn’t done that yet 😂
In fairness, Teller didn't mention it once during the clip and Steve may not have known. Hell, I didn't even know Penn & Teller were atheists or Steve said that until reading some of the comments on this clip, and I've been a fan of both P&T and Steve for years.
@Marie Whitbread If someone doesn't pay attention to them outside of their shows, they wouldn't know about it. For example, I didn't know until it was mentioned in the comments of this video, nor did I know Penn even wrote a book about his atheism as it has no bearing or impact on his performances.
The deck that Penn pulls out is 2 halves of the same 26 cards duplicated. So the cards he gives Steve are the same as the ones he keeps. Doesn’t matter how Steve shuffles it, once he gives them back to Penn, Penn false-shuffles to put Steve’s 26 cards on the bottom and his set of 26 cards in a prearranged order on top. Steve says the card, now Teller (who memorized Penn’s order) knows how far down to count.
at 2:50 Penn says : "You can force the bottom card, the top one or the middle one" and shows the 6 of diamonds, then he Flips the deck, shows only part of the deck to Steve and then he says "Take a bunch of those" tryng to pretend he is giving out most of the cards. What seems interesting is that the 6 of diamonds (which Penn has on the bottom of his bunch of cards now) is the first card from left to right when harvey fans the deck (3:14). Penn then says "I want you to really remember the secuence" giving out the way of doing the trick, which means that he has the same number of cards steve does (Maybe 26) and those cards are on a specific order. Finally, he pretends he is shuffling the cards by using misdirection but he is really only positioning his cards on top of the deck. Finally, All that teller has to do is remember that secuence and stop before the Ace of Hearts.
I'm no magician, but here's my theory: When Penn gave Steve half of the deck and told him to pick a card, at some point Penn changed his half of the deck (via slight of hand or whatever) with another "replacement" half of deck (maybe from his pocket or something) that contained the exact same cards Steve's half deck contained. Steve hands back Penn his half and Penn puts his replacement half on top of Steve's. He then hands back the new full deck to Steve and tells him to say the card he chose out loud. At this point, I believe Teller has the entire replacement half deck memorized in order, so no matter what card Steve said out loud, Teller would know how many to count until he reached Steve's card. Clearly when Teller finished counting, instead of throwing the card down to the floor, he tossed it sideways. This was to indicate to Penn that the next card was Steve's card. And boom it was. As I said, this is my theory... I could be completely wrong . Thoughts anyone?
I bet the cards he put on the top were the identical to the set of cards that Steve was given. I'm guessing this because we never see the cards Penn had and be made sure not to shuffle them. The ones on the bottom were the ones Steve shuffled. Teller simply remembered the order and threw away the number of cards needed to get to the card Steve chose.
there are a lot of these type of tricks, the most popular one you give the bottom half to the viewer, picks a card. Then you put the selected card on the 6th spot whatever it is. In your other half you have all the 5s and 6s stacked on top. You tell the viewer to stop whenever they like, if they pass the 5s and 6s you say lets do it again. If the viewer picks a 6 you reveal the 6th card from their pile. If the viewer picks a 5 you count 5 and then the next one is their card.
I think somehow the decks are duplicated... so Penn has a mirror of Steve's deck ... I don't really think it's a forced card, it's just that Penn orders his mirrored deck in a certain pattern , places it on top, Teller knows the pattern by heart. That's my best guess !!
The misdirection used here was beautiful ! I suspected it the first time, but when I watched it back, it was obvious and I felt stupid for not realizing it immediately. It was only after reading some comments, that I realized a trick was apparently done. Sure enough, a trick WAS done, a card trick ! Dominique was so hot, it got by me completely, the first time. Well done P&T, nice !
1) Split the deck of card in 2 similar sequences 2) put Steve’s shuffled part on the buttom 3) Put Pen’s unshuffled part on top and deal it to Teller 4) Steve say your Card out loud « Ace of Heart » 5) Teller hear is, Knows the Ace of heart is The position of the Ace in the unshuffled deck from Pen 6) teller counts till the position and stop there you go ..Now they coverd his eyes but not his ears, if steve refused to say the card out loud then teller would be screwd
Had to watch it a few times to realize what took place. When Pen is shuffling the deck, he is actually replacing Steve's half deck with his own half-deck that's been ordered. Teller knows the number of the card. It's only 26 to choose from. As long as the new deck is not accidentally put out of order by Steve when handing cards over to Teller, it's guaranteed to work. The question to ask would be: "Why would Penn shuffle the cards by cutting them so specifically, when the half-decks had already been shuffled individually? An unsolicited move reveals the nature of this illusion.
The deck in penn hand has same cards as he gave to steve...also teller knows the order of the cards in penn's hand...penn asks steve to shuffle only his cards and not the whole set...he then takes steve's cards put them at bottom..and gives him back(after doing fake shuffles because he is control at that moment)..gives the deck back to steve and asks him the order will not change at 3:45 so that he doesnot shuffle again...now asks him the card name and since teller already know where the card will be he picks the correct card...
You have no idea what you're talking about.. He never physically chose a card, that's too obvious. Penn specifically told him to THINK of a card without pulling it out, showing or telling the audience.. You have a simple mind with ambitious confidence.
To clear up even further, Penn did not look at the deck to see where the AH was, and he asked his card after his shuffle (which you thought was a force) He used mental misdirection to make you think he forced a card to a certain order after Steve shuffled.
@@johnboyjr21 I think you are not good in english..anyways I will explain in simple terms...suppose you have 6 cards - 6,7,8 of hearts(Batch A) and again 6,7,8 of hearts(Batch B),Now penn shows these cards to steve very fast so that he feels all cards are different(since there are many cards here steve could not identify and penn never showed all cards to the audience or camera). Now he gives Batch A to steve and keeps Batch B with him.Asks steve to think of a card from Batch A,shuffle the deck and give it back to him...penn places Batch B (as it is without changing order) on top after doing some fake suffles.Gives back to steve and asks him not to shuffle again.Asks the card name from steve and Teller knows the order of cards in Batch B and thus where the card will be from top of the deck. Sure
So everybody except for the people watching through a screen knew what was going on?
This trick is so painfully simple but it’s so freaking genius.
This trick is so much easier than how the comments are explaining it to be, and that's the true beauty of Penn and Teller.
The best magic makes you feel mentally impaired, when you learn the method. Thats the thrill if doing it; pulling something so stupid, you cant possibly get away with it.
I like the fact that Penn mentioned that he is not going to force a card, but still forced a card. I love this ACAAN version
The girl holding her hands on tellers face for so long before the trick even starts is so funny
i like dominique ....shes a cutie
She doesn't like you. I asked.
True she don't
I want to be Dominique's toilet.
^Welp there goes our neighborhood racist.

The explanation is simple :
1. There is only 26 different cards within the decks
2. Penn splits the deck half
3. He gave the top half to Steve
4. He made Steve to think 1 card from the Top Deck, and make him shuffle the deck
5. Penn also shuffle the deck according to the sequence he wants OR he never shuffled the deck, and only make us to think he shuffled the deck
6. He put the Top Half deck from Steve and return to step no 5 but this this time, Penn makes the bottom half to get into the Top deck
7. He put the deck back into Steve's hand
8. Teller only need to act as if he feels the card, but in his memory he already memorized the sequence of the bottom half
The Trick is pen gave Steve cards in his hands with the exact order teller memorised . He totally gave it away , full entertainment value!!!
But Steve shuffled the cards before giving it to Penn?
@@prasiddhatimilsina926 I will correct him. Pen changed the deck and gave Steve the half which has same cards as Pen's half. Teller knows the order of the Pen' half. Steve shuffled the cards but Pen never gave this half to Teller.
As Penn said “remember this sequence...” 💪🏼
I thought steve Harvey was taller then I found out penn is 6'6"
Here’s what I’ve decided for how Teller knows where the card is:
At 3:36 when Penn “shuffles” he’s actually just swapping the bottom half of the deck with the top half, and that the half that Steve has is a random order of the exact same cards as what Penn has, which are in a specific sequence. Steve picks a card that’s in the 26 that he’s holding, and teller just has to go through half the deck until he gets to the right card.
I think the trick was all of us watching this video know he picked the Ace of hearts before he said it🤔🤔
I've been send binge watching Steve and Fool Us.
RUclips knows the way to my heart 🥺
I also picked the Ace of Hearts when looking at the deck
On Penn's podcast he said that something went wrong the first time they did this trick so they did it again. That's why Steve Harvey was so thrilled. Penn said they would have been willing to air the failure but it was the show that decided to film it again.
Dominique....the best misdirection I've seen...*clears throat* anyway
She misdirected a lot of blood for a lot of guys watching. And probably some of the girls.
You know what, I think Steve Harvey is the only person on RUclips that asked me to press the damn button and I did it! : )
A rare trick where Teller actually does nothing, and it’s all Penn 😲
4:04 ok but that was some good card throwing
Most people in the comments seem to suggest the opposite. People think Teller memorized the deck order and counted until he hit Ace of Hearts.
it could be either that does the memorisation, but in the routine it's Penn that stops cards at that point.
"Oh yeah, cmon baby!" best reaction to a magic trick haha
i love how steve hesitated a little when penn told him to look at the next card
Trick solution: There was two sets of each card, the half that was given to Steve’s ended up on the bottom of the deck after Steve chose a card and shuffled the deck, which means penn’s half which was never shuffled was on the top half, before the show teller just memorized the 26 cards in order and chose whichever card Steve said.
He choses before steve reveals the card so thats not true
I love how he talks about forcing, and I'm assuming the deck has doubles so Steve can shuffle all he likes and it doesn't matter because a subset has been forced on him. Then they talk about trying to forget a sequence when I bet Teller knows the order of the duplicates Penn had put on top with the false cutting. All fits with the stated goal. Love this kinda crap even if I'm wrong.
OUTSTANDING - as always!
Hey Dominique...
You sound like a complete idiot.
Well thanks! I like to be thorough. I'd say I wonder what an incomplete idiot sounds like, buuuuut I think I'm getting the idea.
shoutrite91 an incomplete idiot?
Lol I'm not sure if thats better or worse than being a complete idiot.
Haha.
If you DIDNT say that on purpose, I would just claim you did. :P
Lol definitely did David. Glad you found some humor in it, unlike our porn-assuming friend above. Perhaps you can share your new found joy with him!
>Have a letter for your profile picture
its funny when they put a mic on teller.🤔
After Penn received the cards back from Steve, he put them back in order for Teller. They both memorized the deck so no matter what card he picked, they know where it is in the deck.
except that doesn't work because harvey shuffled the cards randomly
@@MrCrystalm8 Yes but watch Penn afterwards. He stacks it.
Hey guys, if you really want to know how the trick works listen to: 1:05-1:14, 1:20-1:28, 2:23-2:40, 2:46-2:54, 3:31-3:38
He literally tells you how the tricks done in every sentence. Whatever he says about the cards or the trick , he's doing or done it.
The fact that it was the next card, not the one's Teller touched, that makes it so impressive as well. Like how on earth could you tell it's the next card?? You haven't even touched the deck 😭(I know there's a trick but they know how to put on a show. Like they Fooled Me 🙃)
I knew Steve had picked the Ace of Hearts just based on the way he had it separated from the rest of the cards.
The red paint on Penn's ring finger I'm sure had something to do with it. #inception
@@adikickass84 But it's usually the three of clubs and he always has the red nail.
@@adikickass84 his red nail is in memory of his mother, she told him once that he needed to keep his hands clean because people would be looking at them when he performs, so now he always has one painted.
Just WOW no slide of hands no "nothing" Pen & Teller two amazing guys ! just WOW !
"Now give those cars a good shuffle give them a good a good shuffle... or that kind of shuffle, that's good too steve"😂😂
Now thats magic. Literally doing exactly what they are saying they wont do right when they say they wont do it lol.
But steve shuffled them
@@charliefowler7612 This is plausible, since Penn manipulates the whole deck before handling it back to steve.... we could re-order the deck somehow, but I have no clue how.
The X mark on this trick is the gambit throw from teller. That sends the signal to penn to ask steve again about his card thereby stopping exactly where it is.
I love how awkard it must be for the helper to put her hands on teller's face 😂😂
get shin lim on the show!!
Ray Lai Nah Steve Harvey is racist towards Asian. Research it on RUclips bro.
why not he fooled Penn and Teller twice at least
"Research it on youtube" must be the dumbest thing I've ever heard
I know the trick. Notice the "unneeded" shuffle Penn does at 3:33. Before the trick started.. they had two different sets of cards from two different decks. One set is what Harvey sees, which is exactly the same as what Penn is hiding somewhere else.. this set has the same sequence exactly to what Teller remembers before the show. Harvey hands back the set after his shuffled, and at 3:33 Penn places that hidden unshuffled set back over the top.
That doesn't explain at all how he knew it was an Ace of hearts that he picked.
"No need to be gentle. It's not me." :)
Teller's probably thinking, "Oh yea, baby!"
I like that he says “we try to make people forget the sequence of events” right as he makes Harvey say which card he picked before teller removes the others, and then makes him say it out loud again as if he hadn’t done that yet 😂
Wait... I thought Steve Harvey said "if someone says they're an atheist.. I just walk off"
When did he say that?
He did, money speaks well I guess 😂🤣
@@TheDreadedZero he said that like 9 years ago
In fairness, Teller didn't mention it once during the clip and Steve may not have known. Hell, I didn't even know Penn & Teller were atheists or Steve said that until reading some of the comments on this clip, and I've been a fan of both P&T and Steve for years.
@Marie Whitbread If someone doesn't pay attention to them outside of their shows, they wouldn't know about it. For example, I didn't know until it was mentioned in the comments of this video, nor did I know Penn even wrote a book about his atheism as it has no bearing or impact on his performances.
4:45 ladies and gentlemen being ya tellah!
+1
Makes sense
*Magic circle: TRIGGERED*
thats the only actual possibility. This person wins the internet! smart!
I was thinking along the lines of a deck switch but this does the same thing better. Kudos👍
I love the show Fool Us, having said that P&T don't often AMAZE me, but this trick..... this trick is genius. I was amazed.
at 2:50 Penn says : "You can force the bottom card, the top one or the middle one" and shows the 6 of diamonds, then he Flips the deck, shows only part of the deck to Steve and then he says "Take a bunch of those" tryng to pretend he is giving out most of the cards.
I'm no magician, but here's my theory:
When Penn gave Steve half of the deck and told him to pick a card, at some point Penn changed his half of the deck (via slight of hand or whatever) with another "replacement" half of deck (maybe from his pocket or something) that contained the exact same cards Steve's half deck contained.
Dean Kontos that sounds good but he said he wasn’t doing any slight of hand
@@beardedfatguy1 Rule Number 1: Never believe what a magician says XD
I bet the cards he put on the top were the identical to the set of cards that Steve was given. I'm guessing this because we never see the cards Penn had and be made sure not to shuffle them. The ones on the bottom were the ones Steve shuffled.
Teller simply remembered the order and threw away the number of cards needed to get to the card Steve chose.
What I love is you know the trick is coming but you still are amazed by it.
An amazing trick by the best duo. The gambit throw had to be a sign.
Any Gambit reference deserves a shout out no matter how long later
there are a lot of these type of tricks, the most popular one you give the bottom half to the viewer, picks a card.
Steve harveys face when the "blindfold" comes out on stage xP
3:20 Penn has another ace of hearts in his hand 😄 they are good
I think somehow the decks are duplicated... so Penn has a mirror of Steve's deck ... I don't really think it's a forced card, it's just that Penn orders his mirrored deck in a certain pattern , places it on top, Teller knows the pattern by heart. That's my best guess !!
Anybody else think RUclips getting real comfortable hitting us wit these double un skippable ads
I like watching Penn and teller magic because their magic tricks are easy to notice
the fact they put a microphone to Teller's jacket is so adorable
Penn has many haircuts
While teller stick with the same classic curly hair 😄
Gotta love Steve Harvey and P&T.
Do me a favor and press the damn button 🤣🤣😂🤣😂 im dying
Maignan Mclopez lmao i know rite?
That applause was not nearly enough!! I cannot even begin to imagine the advanced insides of this trick....
Pretty easy. Everything else is buildup. Steve is told to choose Ace of Hearts and the card put above it is crimped.
1) Split the deck of card in 2 similar sequences
2) put Steve’s shuffled part on the buttom
3) Put Pen’s unshuffled part on top and deal it to Teller
4) Steve say your Card out loud « Ace of Heart »
5) Teller hear is, Knows the Ace of heart is The position of the Ace in the unshuffled deck from Pen
6) teller counts till the position and stop there you go
..Now they coverd his eyes but not his ears, if steve refused to say the card out loud then teller would be screwd
You can see the Ace of Hearts in Teller's hand at 3:20. Watch the "shuffle" that he does, its easy to see him placing cards where he wants them.
An unsolicited move reveals the nature of this illusion.
exactly
Agree! this is probably how it's done...brilliant nonetheless.
Awesome, thanks for the video.
Judging by Steve’s reaction, I think he learned a little too much about magic during rehearsal lol

Good show Mr. Harvey. I've always been a big fan of yours and this Penn & Teller video was great. Thank you
I like Penn and Teller but...
I clicked for Dominique.
The biggest of penn and teller's secrets is that teller is biologically a Hobbit
They had to reshoot Harvey's reaction to this shot xD
(Penn told the story on his podcast)
Penn and Teller are legends!!!
OMG, did you just see that? If you follow closely, you will be blown away at how Dominique is so cute.
Told u they were forcing a card did then revealed. Says how to do it while doing it. Still gets the reaction! Legends!
But afcourse I can be wrong :P
@@mayankjain4364 OHHHHH Ok I get what you meant, that is a definite possibility! I thought you meant that Penn forced the deck Steve had. You're absolutely right my friend, I apologize.
