02:22 He filled it with helium gas at the start, look at how he connected the balloon to the tube from his left hand. 02:42 he hid that thing in his left hand. 03:00 he's actually stopping it to float since it is filled with helium, that's what Penn means when he says backwards. We thought it would fall but it's the opposite. 03:15 this balloon is filled with a fine sands of iron, this is what the bearing is, a tiny ball iron bearings inside the balloon. Put the balloon on top of a magnetic table to hold it in place. 03:20 his right hand turned on/off a switch under/side of the table to turn on/off the magnets, those magnets are lined up in a row. First magnet off, the balloon moves to the second magnet and so on. That's why it crawling with a move-stop motion. 03:27 is where he use an invisible string and loop it on top of the balloon to keep it in place, a smaller circle-shaped string not wider than the balloon. 04:00 is where he breaks the string, he let go of the balloon and it floats weirdly, maybe because from the excess rubber from the knot or from those fine iron sands that fell to the bottom of the balloon.

I saw that you’re still replying, I honestly thought the performance was tremendous, it was stylish, classy, and elegant. Beautiful style, and great magic.
The magic wasnt in the balloon flying, it was in keeping it down, which is alot easier. His asthma puffer was filled with helium. Nothing, even something seemingly comedic, isnt without reason
this trick had the vibe of many of Teller’s solo tricks. it’s really beautiful & wholesome, and it even tells a story without needing any spoken words. my favourite kind of magic.
@@jonpendragon2066 I don't think their routines are boring at all. Some are drier or more cerebral than others, but to each their own. It's interesting because your YT handle bears a striking resemblance to a relatively famous magician's name: Jonathan Pendragon but I know you can't be him because he would never say something like that.
There are a handful of routines I absolutely love, and this is easily one of my favorites. To be so good at what you do that you can get an audience to develop an emotional connection with a balloon is outstanding.
Ballons are magic, if you don't believe me, next time you see a wee child give him a floating balloon and see the wonder in his face, that is magic. I'll quote you on that until one of us dies.
I just enjoy how people online think they can tell what people who know they're filmed by several cameras feel like and ascribe whatever they want to them. It's definitely magic.
That's really beautiful. Proof that the small stuff is what makes it big. That little kiss makes it very emotional, actually. I wasn't expecting it, and it sort of got me a bit. That could be a great Pixar short. Really well done!
It's crazy how a man and a balloon can inflict such feelings on a human. I think it's the idea of being free and every human has a sensitive area to that.
Jeff Lewis I caught that too, but technically "thank you" doesn't go into the other hand. That was more like the sign for "good" in ASL. It's curious nonetheless.
I'm sure it has been mentioned already in these thousands of comments, but there was an absolute beauty to this act. It makes it much more than just a trick. It makes it magical.

@@mariosalgado3131 I suspect he had some sort of hidden helium TANK on his person. He might have also used a LOOP of very thin string to manipulate the baloon when he picked it up. I suspect that the table had a magnet and that there was a iron ball BEARING in the baloon to make it stick to the magnet.
@@eriksmith5628 A single inhaler puff's worth of helium isn't going to be enough to counteract the weight of all that carbon dioxide. That balloon floated too easily. I think Avatarbee's helium tank proposal has merit, and the last puff into the balloon was the only legit one. I should add that when we say "helium tank", we're not talking about one of those giant steel barrels you so often see. Something as small as a water bottle or a camelbak pouch would hold enough helium in it to fill a single balloon.
The music made me feel like I was relaxing in a spa. It's hard going out trying to perform in front of people and impressing, especially in front of Penn and Teller. Good job man keep it up!!!
This is without doubt the most entertaining magic trick I have seen. A big, dopey smile is still plastered on my face and it won't be going away any time soon.

Incredibly high praise indeed! If Red Skelton isn't at least one of your heroes, you either haven't heard of him or you have questionable taste. Thanks for watching and leaving me such lovely words!
This was a very wholesome, pleasant act. I tip my hat for doing something that is both unique and nostalgic. My favorite part of this video was actually not the act itself (make no mistake, it was a top act) but when you said that you were cheating because balloons are already magic and to prove it all you need to do is look at a child's face when given a balloon. Right when you say that the camera cuts to Penn and Teller and you can see how Teller's face lit up at that remark, he was absolutely enthralled by that poetry and so was I. Trying to reignite the spark of childlike wonder is what magic is all about and you completely nailed it.
Thank you. I truly appreciate it when people take the time to write a thought out compliment and honest reaction to my work... and with proper grammar, to boot! I try to bring a sense of theatre to my magic as opposed to the exhibitional "look at this thing" that many audiences have grown tired of. Glad to hear it's being appreciated!

When I can't figure out the act myself, I usually understand enough of what Penn says to finish the puzzle. But this left me in awe and still confused on the exact details of how you pulled this of. Beautiful magic.
Potential key phrases by penn indicating how it’s done. “We thought we were gonna *tank* on it for a moment. You threw us for a *loop for a moment and pulled us in* but we got our *bearings*.” They knew it immediately.
If you watch the specials where they travel around the world to meat performers it's the same thing. He's really the architect magician of the two, and loves watching more than performing it seems. Pen is the showman and juggler. Even if you can tell he gets how it worked, he always seems to appreciate a good performance.
@@Ambrizzle33 but does helium have a mind of its own? The balloon stayed put part of the time, hovered between their hands up and down part of the time, and then finally floated up at the end.
So many people explaining how this trick is done all the way through. Even we know how it is done he is a great performer and this trick is magical. It made my wife smile when I showed it too her and she doesn’t speak English. It made the kid inside me enjoy watching a balloon. I would love to learn this trick and perform it for everyone and I would not change a thing. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Despite throwing them for a loop,,,,you should have won just for not coming out with the same boring routines that everyone else does. I enjoyed it. Float on!
That was a FANTASTIC performance. I'm sorry about watching this so late. More magicians should perform as well and professional as you did. Nice job, man
I have been watching a lot of Penn & Teller Fool Us lately and of the many magic acts I have seen this one is the first to make me really say WOW! Great Job! Thank you!
Tank, bearing (ballbearing) , loop :) yes there was a magnet inside the table a bearing in the balloon and he obviously palmed the helium container and put it in his left hidden pocket on the back.
No helium in the inhaler. The volume of helium that would be required to lift that ballon could not fit in that inhaler. The inhaler is just a distraction for the tube thats up his left sleeve.
He has a type of helium pen or something in his left hand that is holding the bag. That's why he keeps clutching it and blows it up awkwardly. At 2:41 you can see him tuck it away, then he blows air in it one last time to make it seem like it was all air. Regardless of how tricky it is, it was still really nice
My guess is that when he "fixed" the table cloth, he turned on a switch in the table which maybe had a fan under the table cloth pulling it downwards. With a fan sucking in, the balloon would stay down and the cloth wouldn't be blowing around. Just a guess though.
Matthew Kenefick im guessing he put a small ball bearing in the balloon that was able to be manipulated with a magnet under the table. It seemed to be bottom heavy as it was floating up, and penn said "bearing" when he talked to him.
As with every time I reveal something, it's on magician's channel so he can delete it: Penn was actually pretty damn obvious on his own, but if anyone missed it... Naathan filled the balloon with helium(hidden mini helium tank+tube in arm im guessing). . The trick was making the audience believe he had a balloon filled with regular air he blew into it. Each time the balloon "fell" that was the actual illusion. Was actually impressively done. I wouldn't have caught it if he didn't let the balloon go, or if (via invisible string) pulled it back down perhaps. When up against other magicians, you need to take into account the extra insight. Got a feeling this guy is going to be big though. + Cmon, a Scottish Vietnamese guy? He's basically albino unicorn rare.
No, I believe the mini helium tank was in the rescue inhaler. He inhaled it, then inflated the balloon more. Pure helium added to the air would lift the balloon.
@@BobbyPheris Nah, decompressing a balloons worth of gas from something that small and that quick would be very cold and have a lot of force, making it very dangerous (search for CO2 or N2O cartridges). In addition, he's hiding something with his left hand, which he tucks away before the final bit of inflation.
Why tf does this routine have me teary eyed? The music is whimsical and childlike, and the imagery with the balloon makes you feel childish, but it’s kind of like watching your childlike innocence and awe die as you float away with age, until you eventually die. It’s a very beautifully sad routine.
I have watched this performance a few times now. I love your Scottish accent. I used to live in Scotland and I loved it. Your balloon story you have presented is touching - l like it very much. What does it cost to make someone happy for a brief moment.
This was a lovely performance. So simple yet it pulls at that wonderful sensation of awe and joy that as he described like a child seeing a balloon. Really beautiful performance and indeed truly magical.
NAATHAN with two AA's ? Interesting. Interesting magician and really a clean and fun act! Magic is about entertaining, not fooling professionals. You nailed the former!
Marvelous routine! I know there are techniques and numerous ways these things are done, but I never inquire too deeply, if at all. I am usually far too serious and so forth, but this is a realm where I am happy to be well entertained!
That was probably the best performance I've seen in a long time. It's very simple, and very intriguing. I love this magical trick, regardless of if they figured it out or not.
"Balloons are real magic, and if you don't believe me look at a child's face the next time you give them a balloon." *Cut to the absolute look of pure delight on Teller's face.* I swear Teller is just a kid in an adult's body.
Suddenly i realize how heartbreaking it must feel when a child loses a balloon. It is leaving them behind in a world a little wondrous than it once was
Heartbreaking, it defends. I've seen children cry because they didn't mean to lose hold and can never get the balloon back. But more often they let it go on purpose and feel a sense of joy at seeing how high and far into the sky that balloon can magically travel.
I prefer when a magician mimes most the act -- allows me to watch closer without distraction and adds that element of "OoOoOo magic is happening". Then he adds that element of banter and comedy when the act is done, class act. Will go see M.A.M. if he makes his way across the pond.
I've been watching P&T videos non-stop for a while now, and I was thinking "Wow, these are the smoothest acts I've ever seen!" Then I realised I had the video speed set to 1.25....
I'm 46 and live with my parents. I couldn't just tell them no when they wanted to move into the east side of my mansion. Star burst are solid yet juicy, LIKE A LIQUID!!!
I’m gonna take a whack at how he performed this amazing trick, trick spoiler alert: First off, a helium supply is in his sleeve, accompanied by fake breathing sounds when he inflates balloon. the balloon he uses is not from the bag , he has it up his left sleeve, and it is prepped with a light magnet ball inside, and attached to the air supply He puts the inflated balloon on a table that has a moving magnet underneath. The table magnet pulls the balloon’s inner magnet ball. This way the balloon clings to the table and rolls. Magicians thread is used to form a net above the balloon, allowing it to hover and not fly to the ceiling. He attaches the net to his hands just after the table part (retrieving the thread and wax from his jacket pocket). At last to make the balloon float up, he simply undoes the magicians thread net and lets the balloon float to the ceiling. Presto I thought it was a very innovative trick, and found it funny that the inhaler was completely a distraction!
I loved this guy. His delivery, banter, and music were warmly charming. I think his "magnetic attraction" for the balloon was "electrifying". But the awkward handling of the balloon with his right hand when blowing it up was actually a cover for adding helium. Nice pantomime routine.
Why did this feel like it was a person's life, the balloon was a child growing up and Nathan was the parent. And when the balloon flew up, that was a parent letting their child go.
Wow, that was legitimately beautiful, from the music to the movement’s, it actually almost made me cry at the end from watching the balloon float away like a child leaving the nest for the first time, the entire performance really did make me feel like a kid again, it appears to be so simple but that’s what makes it so wonderful and magical, it really did capture that childlike Innocence.
Magic Asian Man, thank you for the response it’s the least I could do, your performance is great, real top tier showmanship it’s always awesome to see how inventive people can be with slight of hand and Prestidigitation, you’re definitely top tier XD
I know this is an old post, but I wanted to acknowledge what you shared. I agree and it was wonderful and beautiful. No doubt in my mind that children and adults love and will love this. IMO so simply special and magical.
Hey Mister Asian Magic man, despite not fooling the judges, this is probably one of the more memorable routines I've seen up to now. I absolutely loved it!
Come to think of it: Is, perhaps, "Magic Asian Man" a take-off on "Secret Agent Man", the theme song from the old Patrick MacNee series? Am I giving my age away here?
That is just a wonderfully fun act. I think magic like this is super fun for children and adults alike to witness, even if you SORT OF know how it’s done. Children certainly won’t have any idea! I know a gas lighter than air is used in the trick, 100%, but I never saw how it got into the balloon! Plus, to get it to stick to the table instead of blowing away? That is the part I can’t quite figure out. My guess is some sort of static bond from his moistened fingers. This trick is certainly based on chemistry and physics as much as it is on magic!
The cupped left hand hiding his mouth when he was blowing up the balloon - there was definitely something in that hand, and when he finished he turned away and pocketed it before tying the balloon with a now empty hand.
Reminds me of job training I did, where the guy who came to speak to our class was Asian. This is Vancouver, we've got all the Chinese people you could want, didn't give us any reason for pause. Until he opened his mouth and came out with one of the thickest Jamaican accents I've ever heard.
No way he holds the helium in his mouth. It is most obviously an inflation device he hides blowing the majority of the balloon up, until that last breath where he turns and shows himself with his mouth on the balloon.
James Robin Penn said most of the trick was to do the opposite of what the audience was looking for. We thought the balloon couldn't fly because it was regular air. Really, it's helium or some other less dense air that causes it to fly and the trick was keeping it from doing so. I just don't know how he did it...
He used a tube or something through his sleeve that fed helium to the balloon, that's why his hand looked awkwardly placed in the beginning. Then he had adhesive or something on the table to keep the balloon still. Then he used a Clear band or something to control the balloon in his hands without touching it.
thank you for that great original magic. I look forward to watching more of your videos. you are an excellent artist... and not just a magician with that great impression of Gilbert Godfried

The tricks both concern deceptions in gravity. No offense meant, you just seemed so flabbergasted about the comparison, I had to give my opinion.

Not a surprise that Penn and Teller figured this one out, but it is really nice to see a solid showman put a new spin on something so well!
Creative, fun and really charming, good stuff!

@@Cattus_Maximus It was not. He had a tube in his sleeve for helium. Very nice trick.
True, but the more impressive part was it not floating, he used magnets for that

Fooled, not fooled, it doesn’t matter. It was a beautiful routine, devoid of the ever-boring deck of cards. It just refreshing to see a prop that is unique and as you said, a balloon has a mystique all it’s own. So I applaud the latex levitation and wish you the very best. Thanks for sharing ! 🎭
Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking the time to leave a cogent comment, devoid of grammatical and spelling errors!
He's a showman that's for sure hes great, love his enthusiasm that will carry him far in life. Bravo sir
Thank you so much for the lovely compliment. I always strive to be the ultimate showman with zeal for my craft and life. Cheers!
As someone who also grew up just outside that part of North Vietnam we call Glasgow, your accent delighted me. And so did your magic act.

You missed "I hope we stuck a few things in there" *shows the palm of his hand*
The magician at one point had the balloon stuck to his hand pretending that it was trying to float upwards when really it was trying to fall.
Tyger you also missed "I don't want to give away too much"
It's an illusion so they don't want the audience to know how it's done while they're watching.
Tyler I think Tyger already figured that much out since he is explaining the more complex aspect of the illusion.
Overthinking it. The inhaler had helium in it. That's it.

Penn and Teller are so f'n knowledgeable of every form of magic. They truly are geniuses of their craft.
And yet their routines are so boring Penn needs to retire teller is the good one
@Infinity zen lol thanks for the barely original insult
@@jonpendragon2066 I don't think their routines are boring at all. Some are drier or more cerebral than others, but to each their own. It's interesting because your YT handle bears a striking resemblance to a relatively famous magician's name: Jonathan Pendragon but I know you can't be him because he would never say something like that.
Not really, If you give them something they never seen before. They can't figure it out. I have seen them get fool on the simplest trick.
There are a handful of routines I absolutely love, and this is easily one of my favorites. To be so good at what you do that you can get an audience to develop an emotional connection with a balloon is outstanding.

@@mariosalgado3131 I suspect he had some sort of hidden helium TANK on his person. He might have also used a LOOP of very thin string to manipulate the baloon when he picked it up. @@Avatarbee my guess is the inhaler had helium in it
@@eriksmith5628 A single inhaler puff's worth of helium isn't going to be enough to counteract the weight of all that carbon dioxide.

I cried a Bit, not gonna lie. You gave a balloon so much personality, I really felt it's urge to fly into the sky. Brilliant work right there!
Between the dimples and the lovely pantomime routine, I was reminded of Red Skelton. And honestly, from me, that is extremely high praise. He has always been my hero.

Thats funny, normally I dont get the code but this one made sense to me.
The balloon was actually lighter than air.
Penn mentions a bearing. Was there one inside the baloon? Or just under the table. A magnetic piece made it move from under the table
Potential key phrases by penn indicating how it’s done.
“We thought we were gonna *tank* on it for a moment. You threw us for a *loop for a moment and pulled us in* but we got our *bearings*.” They knew it immediately.
Yeah. Too bad you're still in the dark.
Yep and “I hope I *stuck a few things in there* ,” ties back to the bearings.
@@KevinEarley let me guess you think it was REAL MAGIC.
Teller's face is the probably the best part of this show. He has a childlike wonder when he's watching other performers.
If you watch the specials where they travel around the world to meat performers it's the same thing. He's really the architect magician of the two, and loves watching more than performing it seems. Pen is the showman and juggler. Even if you can tell he gets how it worked, he always seems to appreciate a good performance.

"We thought we were gonna 'tank' on it."
Gotta love the way Penn gives his hints to the guests.
Tank, bearing (ballbearing) , loop :) yes there was a magnet inside the table a bearing in the balloon and he obviously palmed the helium container and put it in his left hidden pocket on the back.
@@theblackbaron4119 sounds right but would it not be more convenient if the inhaler had helium in it to start?
@@liamnorris9612 This is exactly what I thought.
But how did it roll on the table if it was full of helium at that point?
My guess is that when he "fixed" the table cloth, he turned on a switch in the table which maybe had a fan under the table cloth pulling it downwards. With a fan sucking in, the balloon would stay down and the cloth wouldn't be blowing around.
Just a guess though.
Matthew Kenefick im guessing he put a small ball bearing in the balloon that was able to be manipulated with a magnet under the table. It seemed to be bottom heavy as it was floating up, and penn said "bearing" when he talked to him.
Yeah, there is no reason to cover his mouth with his hand the way he did.

Do you think it's possible that the inhaler he put in his mouth had the helium he needed?
@@BobbyPheris Nah, decompressing a balloons worth of gas from something that small and that quick would be very cold and have a lot of force, making it very dangerous (search for CO2 or N2O cartridges). In addition, he's hiding something with his left hand, which he tucks away before the final bit of inflation.
Why tf does this routine have me teary eyed? The music is whimsical and childlike, and the imagery with the balloon makes you feel childish, but it’s kind of like watching your childlike innocence and awe die as you float away with age, until you eventually die.
It’s a very beautifully sad routine.

Suddenly i realize how heartbreaking it must feel when a child loses a balloon. It is leaving them behind in a world a little wondrous than it once was
Heartbreaking, it defends. I've seen children cry because they didn't mean to lose hold and can never get the balloon back. But more often they let it go on purpose and feel a sense of joy at seeing how high and far into the sky that balloon can magically travel.
i should be studying but i've spent last 2 hours watching these videos. fantastic
I prefer when a magician mimes most the act -- allows me to watch closer without distraction and adds that element of "OoOoOo magic is happening". Then he adds that element of banter and comedy when the act is done, class act. Will go see M.A.M. if he makes his way across the pond.

I’m gonna take a whack at how he performed this amazing trick, trick spoiler alert:
First off, a helium supply is in his sleeve, accompanied by fake breathing sounds when he inflates balloon.
the balloon he uses is not from the bag , he has it up his left sleeve, and it is prepped with a light magnet ball inside, and attached to the air supply
He puts the inflated balloon on a table that has a moving magnet underneath.
Presto
I thought it was a very innovative trick, and found it funny that the inhaler was completely a distraction!
Agreed. The left sleeve is quite visible at 3:03 so the helium supply hose must automatically retract after use. Lovely trick though.
Only change would be the thread as he is using invisible loops. Like IT but stretch and are made into loops.
Nice interpretation. It did feel endearing.
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to write such a thought-out comment. Your kind words are so deeply appreciated.
Adding the extra A just to get in front of all the other Nathans.
Reminds me of job training I did, where the guy who came to speak to our class was Asian. This is Vancouver, we've got all the Chinese people you could want, didn't give us any reason for pause. Until he opened his mouth and came out with one of the thickest Jamaican accents I've ever heard.
Legend says the balloon is still stuck in the rafters.
When did I say that?
Along with all the bird corpses
@@Phyoomz ha just got that. Super funny
Nah they shot it down during their next bullet catch routine
Hmmm helium inhaler??
No way he holds the helium in his mouth. It is most obviously an inflation device he hides blowing the majority of the balloon up, until that last breath where he turns and shows himself with his mouth on the balloon.
But he put the baloon on the table.
321acb123 I'm also wondering if there were magnets in the balloon to hold it to the table, seems like that would also work
thank you for that great original magic. I look forward to watching more of your videos. you are an excellent artist... and not just a magician with that great impression of Gilbert Godfried
