That's actually brilliant misdirection when Penn hits Tellers face. It's made to look like an accident and gets the audience focused on trying to see if another accident will happen. Not many of them were paying attention to Teller fumbling with the rabbit hidden in his coat at that point.
The number of comments here that don't realize that the misdirection was for Jimmy, not the audience, you were meant to see Teller's move, Jimmy was not. That's the joke.
Maybe yes maybe no, I've seen Penn say that if there's a slight mistake and people think it's part of the act then roll with it so regardless of whether or not it was meant to be a joke they will naturally say it was meant to be a mistake. On the other hand these guys have been doing magic for so long it's difficult to imagine then making such small mistakes-in the end I don't think it matters I suppose lol
I agree, except it's not really misdirection: Misdirection would be to lead the audience to expect a result while you surprise them with another. Here he redirected his attention away from Teller's sleight of hand. As these guys often do, so magnificently. Please don't hate me for acting as a know-it-all, I just watched that explanation from another Penn and Teller video. :D

@@JimCunningham-jr7qvnot terrible, it’s about the smoothness, it was for jimmy. Also if you see pen and tellers other work a lot of it has to do with revealing tricks at the same time as tricking you-
That was to signal to him to add the rabbit to the hat, can't remember which trick but I've seen them do it a few times just before the big reveal of a trick.
That wasn't a signal, i think that was misdirection for anyone who was trying to watch Teller's hands... P&T are very smart, and they put misdirection in that misdirects those trying to avoid misdirection... If that makes sense... So while you're watching Teller's hands, he hands Penn the wand, and immediately gets hit in the face by the wand, which makes him recoil. The eye is drawn naturally to the recoil, and away from the hand that's about to load the rabbit into the top hat.
+Voxel Skull also possible just to distract jimmy penn twirls the wand while talking about the reveal while it appears teller is very obviously putting the rabbit into the hat l (idk where he pulled it from though)

He speaks occasionally. They did a show on the BBC and he spoke. Of course he also speaks in some interviews, like one he did about Tim's Vermeer, the documentary he directed.
Amazing how coordinated they are. Always always always watch teller. Penn is only there to grab your attention and present the magic, teller does the actual magic portions. This is why they work so well together. Their act is mutual respect for each other's true craft, showmanship for penn and magic for teller.
well their dynamic works well-- you hear the big loud guy, you think i better watch the little shifty bastard and while you do, Penn is also sleighting things around as well
Really good example of why their act has worked so well for so many years. Penn is the perfect misdirection guy with his elaborate speeches and imposing stature to take all the focus while Teller, the quiet straight man, does the surreptitious trickery that enables them to pull the trick off seamlessly. Notice also how Teller has his hands in his pockets the whole time so you don't notice anything weird about his jacket, which is most likely where he's hiding all the gags.
People act like just because they know how it's done and what to look for that it's less impressive. It's not. Of course it's a trick. Of course if you look for it, you'll see the trick. Of course despite that they pull it off and it looks amazing. You guys are the people that ruin magic. Just let it be wonderful.
+Alistair Cross This didn't look amazing at all. I had no idea how it was done until I watched Teller pull the rabbit from his jacket. It was the sloppiest move I've ever seen them do.
+Alistair Cross Well, I don't know if it's people being jerks or if they are just applying Penn's own standards to his performance. Penn once said “once one thing is seen to be phony the whole thing crumbles...and it crumbles completely. So, it needs to be perfect or not at all” By Penn''s own standards this trick is a huge fail.
+Alistair Cross I saw it the first time. Magic is magic yes, but if you take audiences for a fool that you can trick with any half assed performed trick, that is just disrespectful to not only the audience, but also the magic industry.
+Alistair Cross magic has to bedazzle and amaze to be good. if it's so simple that it's not wondrous then its not magic. if someone pulls a rose out of their pocket then thats boring, if someone snaps their fingers and a rose appears in a puff of smoke that's magic! we all saw him grab it from the back of his jacket, thats not magic, thats boring
I love the misdirection that Penn does when he twirls the wand. When watching live, you'd pay attention to the wand, and not Teller. That's what makes this trick work on a live audience.
Mr. J DickVinci It's supposed to distract the audience from looking at Teller's waist. The idea is that while you're looking at the wand your eyes are lead away from his right hand reaching behind him.
***** True. The funny thing (at least for me) was that I didn't even notice the wand at all, I was looking at the hat the whole time, so it was pretty much impossible not to miss it when he put the rabbit in the hat.

lmao I just commented this thinking I'm super smart for catching on to it, then I scrolled down more and realized a million other ppl caught on to it too lol
I think the hit in the face was an accident, though. Because that MADE me look at Teller, due to the twitch he did, and that's when I saw him palm the rabbit from behind his back and put it in the hat. Penn should ideally take the wand smoothly and then twirl it to misdirect Teller's reacharound.
TheHehe1223 Penn lost the weight for better health. He was taking several B.P. meds and his doctor suggested if Penn lost the weight, he might be able to do away with the B.P. meds. From what I read, he lost the weight through diet only, no exercise. Exercise came AFTER the weight loss.
4:11 OMG, THAT misdirection was PIN-POINT PERFECT! If this wasn't in a video you can rewind, you would't noticed it unless you are trained in stage magic, even knowing the trick, it's always marvelous watching them perform. LOVE THOSE GUYS!
Kevin Walter it’s actually a holster, and as Penn tells it in an interview, the rabbit actually loves it, he jumps into it and feels safe and warm there.
Nitinai Krulamphu but the angles can also favor the magician, it's harder in public because people try to be smartasses and watch over your shoulder, but every magician has their own way to deal with it.
It almost masks the moment of the rabbit being put into the hat, but not quite. The hat is passed to Teller who puts his hand behind his back. The hat obscures Teller's hand as the wand hits his face and the hat rustles and shakes slightly, almost as if in reaction to being hit by the wand but is actually the rabbit going into the hat.
Yeah…a little sloppy. A few gaffes. We could tell how the trick was done. But let's face it…the _real_ impressive part of the trick is not making a rabbit appear to materialize inside a top hat, or even the transfer of a rabbit from a jacket to the hat. The _real_ thing that impresses is _how the hell you stand on a stage for 5 minutes with a giant rabbit in your pocket without it fidgeting or squirming and no one getting the wiser until the last minute!!_ O.O
Rabbit was in his right pocket, he kept his hand in it the entire time except for when blocking the audience with the scarf. He gently puts it back in, and it sort of pads the movement. When he grabs the wand, right before he moves the coat behind him and takes the top-hat, the pocket moves.
I've become much better at avoiding misdirection; I purposefully look where the performer does not want me to. This one was pretty good for a live show, but being able to watch it over and over makes it not as magical. But even given all this, Teller is a master of sleight of hand. The absolute master.
After watching this a few times, this is my favorite part of it: If Hockey Puck didn't want to jump into into hat the trick wouldn't be anywhere near as smooth. Now, yes, I'm sure he's trained, but it's hard to train an animal to do something it really doesn't want to do. And what they have there is a self-loading rabbit.
I remember watching a video of a rabbit out of a hat trick being done, and the way those people did was that they put the rabbit in a black handkerchief and then folded the rabbit up in it. From what i saw, i believe that Teller had a bag strapped to something like a suspender on his back and then when the hat was placed over his hip the bag with the rabbit was slipped into the hat and then the bag was opened and rabbit was shown. Edit. I found the video i mentioned ruclips.net/video/hJfoTcRA9sg/видео.html
@@kylecampbell5812 thanks for that! I had the same question. Everybody can see when Teller does it but it seemed just too fast. That is the kind of reveal that I like because it is very old and magicians are being challenged to come up with something new.
For those who say sloppy, they were performing for Jimmy, so to him and the angle he was at, this was likely completely undetectable but for the viewers in the audience or is, not as much so.
Slow down at 4:12, here you can see that Penn bumped his magic wand at Teller, and at 4:29 Teller shouted "Sure!". That was the actual magic all along...
Love the little touch of misdirection with the wand tip coming into contact with tellers face. Love these guys ever since they made their first appearance.
Teller truly is the master of slight of hand. Sure this isn't one of their best performances and is kind of sloppy, but we have the benefit of rewinding and pausing and looking at everything in the video. In front of a live audience I doubt people would notice or that most would notice after the first watch, I didn't even notice until rewatching a few times. Still a brilliant showcase
What I love about these guys is that they can do magic tricks without insulting anyone. Even when they reveal how it's done, it's still intriguing, because it turns into easily appreciable art.

Very nice sleight of hand from Teller on this one! Maybe it was in his left pocket the whole time, but the more clear movement came from his right. Very well done!
TheNBKiller considering Penn 🖊 says he never saw that trick before it maybe Teller didn’t either so he really will remember how it was done after he did it for Jimmy

That's the point of the video "how to" These are two legendary magicians and they explain why it's so impractical to do this kind of trick in this day and age. They demonstrate this by their performance, it's in a way a joke and a demo to people to show how impractical it is because it's too obvious to the viewer.
+Snitzel It's not a joke that it's obvious to see. If that was the joke, they would have said something about how they did it after. In this case it was easy to see because we can rewind and look up close. Also, the magician had the colorful silk which drew attention to his jacket as he removed the rabbit. It's very insulting for you to act so casual and say they're so bad it's a joke.
Gabbi S Ahahahahaha. Alright mate, you clearly have no idea who these people are. May I suggest you watch their show before expressing your ignorant opinions. By the way, these two guys are my heroes and to even think that these two legends are bad at entertaining people is a sin.
I found when hockey puck enters the hat - the hat and wand misdirect from Teller pulling his jacket away. My question is, WHERE WAS THE RABBIT?? Some pocket/sling in Teller’s coat/shirt? Anyone?
I'm guessing a sling behind his back, based on the stance he takes throughout the show, and the way his coat goes back as he's shifting the rabbit into the hat. He also seems to be pushing his stomach out, and leaning back, to disguise a bulge on his back.
Years of watching them and I know to always look at teller ;D

Nitinai Krulamphu but the angles can also favor the magician, it's harder in public because people try to be smartasses and watch over your shoulder, but every magician has their own way to deal with it.
Nitinai Krulamphu I feel like this trick was more for Jimmy than it was for the audience.
i thought the trick would be the fake rabbit coming to life after being thrown across the stage
+whitedevil2 now that would be a good one! i was expecting the same thing too
You treat animals with compassion, dignity and respect (throw a rabbit across the stage hitting the table). SAVAGE !!!!!!! :D :D loool
It was supposed to but he threw it too hard :/
4:35 The real trick was having Joe Satriani in the band
4:36 I see Joe!
Holy shit it's Satch!
You can see when he puts the rabbit in the hat but it's so unbelievably fast, these two are true masters of their art.
4:11 poor Teller gets a wand in the face right as he's pulling the rabbit from behind him and placing it in the hat! lol
***** I think him getting hit in the face is meant to distract you from looking at him put the rabbit in the hat
Yep, I agree!
4:11 is penn hitting teller in the face part of the trick?
It almost masks the moment of the rabbit being put into the hat, but not quite. The hat is passed to Teller who puts his hand behind his back. The hat obscures Teller's hand as the wand hits his face and the hat rustles and shakes slightly, almost as if in reaction to being hit by the wand but is actually the rabbit going into the hat.
nope
Yes. It's called misdirection.
Johan David it's odd how teller tried to go with it like nothing happened then. you'd think if it was misdirection he would have sold it more.
Nope, it was an accident.
+Grymmorgan Rabbit was probably in a sleeve suspended by a brace with quick release.
+Grymmorgan we GET IT! You know how to italicize text on youtube comment seesh!
I know how he doesn't and when, but I still don't know how the fuck did that rabbit fit anywhere on his jacket
Grymmorgan they drugged the rabbit so it will stay still
Rabbit was in his right pocket, he kept his hand in it the entire time except for when blocking the audience with the scarf.
After watching this a few times, this is my favorite part of it:
If Hockey Puck didn't want to jump into into hat the trick wouldn't be anywhere near as smooth.
Penn distracted the audience by spinning his wand. (Giggity)
Teller simply put the rabbit in the hat.
So simple, so elegant and so effective.
What I love about these guys is that they can do magic tricks without insulting anyone. Even when they reveal how it's done, it's still intriguing, because it turns into easily appreciable art.
Penn lost a lot of weight
He could use a new suit jacket now
I thought I was the only one to notice it, good for him losing so much weight.
The brother needs a new set of clothes that fit
I watched it twice, looking at Teller the second time. It was so obvious but they’re so great together and do amazing work!
2:45 his real laugh confirmed
4:11 Teller gets hit by the wand haha
Teller abuse
It was really easy to see teller loading the top hat with the rabbit.
You can see teller sneak the rabbit into the hat. But I have no idea how they hid the rabbit for so long. Legends.
deep pocket running all around the vest, and rabbit generally doesn't make noise, they don't even have vocal cord and when they went into submissive they really do nothing but sit there and breath
Because Jimmy was on the trick. He had the bunny from the start and snuck it to Penn then he snuck it to teller. Watch closely
Penn hitting Teller in the face with the wand was not an accident. Love it.
4:11 "This is not called juggling. This is called misdirection"
He put the rabbit in when he put his cloth in his pocket.
Nice trick tho :)
Who says magic is ruined once revealed? I still admire them.
I replayed that fake rabbit part and face palmed so hard
same
Hahaha I love how Penn screams at the rabbit. "YOU WERE TREATED WITH COMPASSION, DIGNITY AND RESPECT!!!!"
I am obsessed with Jimmy and I have been obsessing over Penn and Teller, holy shit RUclips recommendations thank you for making dreams come true tonight!
Very nice sleight of hand from Teller on this one! Maybe it was in his left pocket the whole time, but the more clear movement came from his right. Very well done!
4:12 *Teller will remember that.*
TheNBKiller considering Penn 🖊 says he never saw that trick before it maybe Teller didn’t either so he really will remember how it was done after he did it for Jimmy
I know that this is an old comment, but is this an “escape the complex” reference?
Penn and Teller work so well together like twin brothers.
4:11 look at teller! right in his face! :D
I’m sure plenty of people will claim this was so obvious but we also have the ability to rewind and honestly if you’re just drawn into their presentation and showmanship, especially during a live show, you really miss the amazing slight of hand these guys have. They’re incredible!
You could show jimmy any trick and I feel like he would love it. Such a nice guy.
Why is no one talking about Teller saying “Sure!” while turning his head away from the audience :D
because that wasn't teller, it was the rabbit :)
Lots of people are talking about it. You just didn't read enough comments before adding yours.
Teller spoke 4:30 "sure"
When you have a crush on Teller you're always misdirected.
Mad how Penn is so good at distracting you to get your eyes off Teller whilst he does the most vulnerable part of the trick
Imagine being able to see a live taping of this show, and the guests are the great Penn and Teller!....AND guitarist virtuoso Joe Satriani?? Amazing
I went to a Tonight Show live taping and what I got was Charles Barkley and J-Wow.
4:11 - laughed when I saw Penn hit Teller with his wand
4:11 you can see teller put the rabbit in.
It's supposed to be like that because the title clearly says "how to"
***** Too bad in a theater live show there's no replay button.
Fer Galicia I caught it on the first try. All magicians use misdirection. Once you get used to it, you'll be able to spot every trick.
***** yeah it's just a comedy bit, plus Teller was hit in the face with a wand, watch their shows, they don't "slip up" like this, since the trick was still awesome enough :)
***** It's easy to say "he put it in". Imagine doing it on TV with a live animal so fast that you would miss it from a distance.
3:23 .. jimmy went back to his childhood here lol
yes he was in beginner magic school
"You‘ve been treated with compassion" shouting at an animal with giant ears and very delicate sense of hearing xD
4:10 "...and here's the misdirection, Jimmy" love that!
4:12 Poor Teller gets hit with the wand
at 4.10 you can see teller is moving rabbit from back pocket to inside the hat clearly
4:11 Penn hits Teller in the face with a magic wand
I love how you know when and where he does it, but it's such amazing slight of hand it's still entertaining
Right about 4:13. Knew what to look for and when to look for it though. Always love Penn and Teller
3:55 amazing camera timing😂
4:35 is that joe satriani just chilling with the band?
Satch brought the rabbit in when he was surfing with the alien.
welp that pun sucked
Looks like him but I don't think so.
Good eye!
Just looked it up and Satriani did in fact sit in with The Roots that night.

LURX da GOART Lol, what a coincidence. gj on being a detective :3
Joe and Kirk in a band would be awesome
Teller pulls it out of his jacket after he hands over the word.
That's the point of the video "how to"
These are two legendary magicians and they explain why it's so impractical to do this kind of trick in this day and age.
+Snitzel Yes! They are brilliant!
I missed them the last time they came to Australia! 😞
Hope they come back here some time soon!
Good move. Looks natural and teller spoke!
