The actual trick is stupidly simple once you figure it out (false back on the cage hiding the woman in the gorilla costume), but it's Penn and Teller's stage presence, charisma, and showmanship that turn it into magic.
So what's the "misdirection" here?
Making the audience think that they actually snuck her in at some point?
@@edmis90 The misdirection was Penn lying to the audience that they were going to make the chicken disappear, so nobody was looking for the real trick, which was the woman in a gorilla costume suddenly appearing inside the cage. By the time the reveal happens, most people have forgotten that the cage started out considerably narrower.
@@edmis90 Misdirection is pretty much what he explains, to me it's taking advantage of people's expectations by providing pieces of a narrative that they start to piece together, only to reveal they were putting them together wrong the whole time.
@@edmis90 2 suggestions
1) We never see the back of the box. There's a door there that opens downwards and a board that enables the "Gorilla" to emerge unseen from a panel backstage and enter the box. Something similar was done on AGT.
2) The gorilla/girl was already in the box behind a panel, and it wasn't her who came onstage banging the symbals.
@edmis90 The premise "we're going to make a chicken disappear" is the misdirection.
She was in the cage from the beginning which makes the trick an example of misdirection about misdirection.
It does fit their definition of misdirection. They are directing your attention by telling you what you should be expecting to change.
The Kansas City Shuffle is misdirection.
In the first few seconds of the act, Penn literally tells you his definition of misdirection, which, may or may not be different to yours. Anyways the chicken was the misdirection, because you wouldn't normally notice how close to the front of the cage, and how close the back "cloth" is to the chicken. Penn's whole speech on misdirection was to distract you from noticing that.
That’s so meta.
She didn't fill the entire cage. At least not in all 3 dimensions. She simply was further to the back at the beginning, then got the chicken and gave it to Teller to carry it away, then went a little forward so that she was at the front so it looked like she filled the cage completely.
You can see how much the Cage shakes during that time and how Penn tries to cover that up by wildly gesticulating and bumping into the cage over and over again so that it seems hat this is his doing.
The chicken was actually the showgirl. She quickly changed out of the chicken costume and into the gorilla outfit. The real magician is Georgie Bernasek.
I thought you were gunna say: "The real magic, was the friends we made along the way."

Damn penn really lost some weight
These two are some of the best story tellers and presenters in magic . their tricks like this are not the hardest to figure out and many times they tell how the trick is done . they are more about the entertainment value, its a show not a trick. This trick for instance is actually not at all a misdirection trick. That's the story they tell to entertain us. And it works. But dont be fooled these two are also some of the best magicians in the world and know some of the most complex tricks there are.
clint brunke couldn’t have worded it any better.
Wait so acting like it was a misdirection trick was misdirection to make us think it was a misdirection trick!!!
Catching a bullet. Real bullet, real gun, craziest illusion magic ever. They know their stuff, no doubt in the world
Spookyturbo Exactly. Penn & Teller are fantastic magicians not for having the most complicated or difficult to perform tricks. They are fantastic because they are capable of weaving and presenting a story that the audience believes about how a trick is done, only to pull the rug out from under them with a reveal that would be impossible if the trick were down how they make the audience think it was done. Honestly, anybody could easily perform this trick with little training or practice. It's honestly quite simple. Few people would be able to fool or even entertain an audience with this trick, however, because few people have the ability to misdirect an entire narrative built by an audience, rather than just use simple misdirection to distract them.
Lol it’s simple she was in the cage all alone when the chicken was in there was a purple back ground , he took the chicken when removed the cloth lol the background was removed as well lol

Most people here have noticed that the gorilla was in the cage the entire time, but, if you watch closer, penn is constantly leaning on the box to apply weight to it, and the cymbals are there to mask the sound of movement. He applies weight to keep the box from shifting and moving around on its own, which you can tel by alwatching the golden cloths pieces moving frantically when the cymbals start going off.
You can also see the cloth bulging up under his elbow as the gorilla scoots into position in the box. 2:31 - 2:33.
Did you have a stroke at the start and end of the comment? ;)
The middle is so coherent.
So then how did the gorilla girl sneak into the cage if she wasnt there the whole time, and we would have seen some shadow from the behind the legs of the table
@@matthewclokus7311 that’s what he’s saying, she WAS there the whole time. When you see the chicken, look how close the “back” of the box is to the chicken. It’s a false back and she was behind it the whole time. While he’s talking, she’s moving into position ready for the big reveal, but to mask any movement or rocking he leans on the box so you assume it’s only rocking because he’s leaning on it. The gorilla with the cymbals is a different gorilla!
yep. there were two gorillas. one in the cage and another with symbols. there was an opaque object between the chicken and the gorilla. the gorilla handed the chicken to teller, along with the blanket separating the gorilla from the chicken. thats why the cage changed when you look at it from the beginning when you couldnt see through to the end when you can.

Penn and Teller are the two most amazing magicians. Every one of their performances, it feels like you learn something. Maybe small maybe unnecesary but there's a certain depth to each of their tricks that makes them stick to you.
Pretty smart to have the loud cymbals cover up the sound of the back panel falling down.
For real. They should do this for a living!
No, that was to cover the Chicken making any noise as it was put into the bottom of the box.
Rumbaar Gaming think pen took it ?
@@damonsantore2345 Most probably not. Everything Penn says is a lie (during the act).
You can even see the whole cage shaking at @ 2:41 onward. The lady is taking down the barrier so she can step out the front.

Yeah right. This trick is easy to figure out. The chicken was obviously some kinda Wolfman, all along.
But instead of having a Man form, it had a Chicken form. And instead of having a Wolf form, it obviously had a Man form
(but except the Man was actually a WOman, and he put on a Ape costume)
So to recap: this trick is obvious: the Chicken was a Wolfman all along; but the misdirection was that instead of a Wolfman, it was a Lady-Chickenape

Wow, what an act! Good job, Penn and Teller. You really know how to make a classic trick more interesting. I always like when magicians use stage props in their acts, especially ones of that size. It is a rather large prop, larger than most can see, at least at first. Wouldn't you agree? It's big enough to hold a chicken, a gorilla or even both at the same time. You speak about misdirection being an important part of this act, and I believe you _simulated_ that quite well, but what people may not realize is the amount of care and patience that also went into it. Wonderful job, Penn and Teller. You didn't fool us, but it's a terrific act. Thank you so much for being here.
2:52 People raising their hands as soon as the hear show of hands 😂
I love Penn and Teller! I saw them live in the 80's when I was bout 12ish in Los Angeles. They were just starting out. It was the best thing I had sent in my life. I'm so happy every time I see how big they are 😊.

Corona
The camera cuts ruined this performance. That's the ultimate misdirection.
PS. Two gorillas, one of the gorillas is already in the box at the beginning. The box is much longer than it appears. There is a dividing plate between the chicken and the back of the box where the gorilla is. When the gorilla appears in the box, the plate is missing and you can see straight through it to the back of the stage. There is actually no need for any form of misdirection in this trick. And that's the point, that is misdirection.

The magic itself is simple; it is the story telling makes it magical.
(Just for kids who are curious: the box has two compartment, with the chicken in front visible but a gorilla in the back. The gorilla dancing is another one, but Teller did take the chicken away, leave the gorilla in the box.)
you can see the false back very close behind the chicken. later when the "gorilla" gets out, there is no back at all to the cage and you can see the wall behind it.

These tricks are more impressive when there aren't camera cuts during possibly important sections of an act.
True, but the way this trick was done doesn't require camera cuts at all.
They have a live audience watching them tho
@@kevinlund357 My point is that because the editor or producer doeant realize everything they do is important, we're missing a lot of action.
@@Halinspark That's just the nature of magic on TV. A continuous shot would be boring, and the editors aren't going to make the act more boring for 90% of the audience to please the 10% of the audience who care about the possibility of camera tricks. (Especially since it's well known that P&T almost never rely on camera tricks anyway-I only know of one exception to that rule where it's basically done as a joke.)
I have seen the show in Vegas, he did it live
I like how penn pushes fallon out of the frame to start his demostration.
After watching the magicians code lol this shit was beyond easy. There are two gorillas, same built. The lady is already behind the cage, since you can't see, behind the cage is bigger to hold her in. The other person (gorilla) walks out and teller gets the chicken out and the lady has a split second to open the compartment and get into position. She really is the whole act, extremely talented lady.
1:02 You can see in this shot how long behind the box is (look at the red cloth behind Penn), more than big enough to hold a flexible thin woman.
If you slow it down to 0.25 speed you can see that they do the trick and you still don't know how it's done, but slower.

The misdirection is that they promised us it's a vanishing chicken trick, but is in fact one with an appearing gorilla. Very entertaining. Very meta. Well done.
I feel like there was a false wall at the back of the cage and she was actually sitting in the cage behind the wall the whole time, And the cymbals muffle the sound of the wall being dismantled as Teller grabs the chicken. Then as Teller is walking pff stage, he outstreched the side of his coat to make it look like he was just concealing the chicken, but he was actually concealing the fact that he was also carrying away the wall
I’ve never heard jimmy sound more serious or interested in something then at 2:15

Jennifer A misdirection
She was in the cage the whole time. When the chicken was in there they had a purple back drop which was designed to look like it had depth, when in actuality it sat inches from the front. When she gets out after, you will notice there is no purple back on the box.
Evan Worden oh damn, why didn't I notice that...

Very glad someone noticed this haha
Penn actually fooled the audience to tell a lie as no one actually SAW Teller leave with the chicken.
The point he's making is that at no point does anyone see a chicken outside the cage, including when Teller is walking behind the cage.
Penn and Teller would stoop to that level. The purple curtain hid the gorilla because you can kind of tell that the cage is a tad longer back to front.
Nathan Spotswood there was no chicken, so no teller didn’t walk a chicken of the stage.
Well 3 things; he didn't necessarily take the chicken out back (it's just implied).
Secondly, this may be quibbling but it wasn't a gorilla it was someone in a gorilla suit, while it's semantics and shorthand it does show how the verbal framing works, ie he got the audience already agreeing to incorrect things.
Lastly, who says there was a chicken? Odds are very high that it was just a quality animatronic (you can spend a lot of cash when you reuse it a lot) - when it's a live animal one assumes they have a lot less leeway for screwing around (assuming they are ethical, which their public image is built on) - it would definitely suit their sense of humor if the actual name sake of the trick about misdirection is part of the joke - ie there is no 'vanishing chicken' because there was never a chicken.

we kinda see only like 1/4 of the cage thanks to the purple wall which is gone after gorrila leaves so... well you know ;)
yeah that was so sloppy.
The gorilla was there at the back of the cage all along, you can see how the chicken is compressed and can´t barely move.
Plus you know, you can see the purple back of the cage that "mysteriously" isn't there in the end.
And that is the misdirection
and the 2 gorilla costume are actually different: check the abdomen area
@@LegDayLas i know what you're saying, but the purple back is supposedly not there anymore is because they take out the whole cloth from the cage
@@ReyXO1 First off it's a red cloth, purple background, they don't match. Second when he pulls the cloth over to hide the chicken you can see no movement in the purple background, implying it is 1.) not fabric, and 2.) not part of the moving blanket.
Penn and Teller-- Timeless Legends! The first act of theirs that I remember (may or may not be 1st time I saw them), had Teller hanging upside down and tied up (straight jacket? I don't know...), with a flame underneath the rope holding him up. Penn recited the entire "Ballad of Casey Jones" as Teller struggled to free himself. The rope was timed to burn through exactly as Penn recited the final words of the Ballad! Teller, of course, freed himself and landed nimbly on his feet at the point the rope burned through! Stunning act! Whether or not that was the 1st time I saw them, I definitely remembered them ever since...
Everytime Penn's on Jimmy's show, he says about "history", everytime

If you look closely at 3:10 , you'll see that in the middle row, bottom right, theres a girl wearing white tops, didn't raise her hand, and then you'll see her friend beside her is laughing at her afterwards.
False back in the box, she was in the back the entire time.

Agreed , If you watch near where Penn's Elbow is on the top of the box you can see the red cloth moving around as she gets into position. Surprised they actually used this trick on national tv as it's so obvious how the trick was done. Kind of rookie league, but i still love these guys.

The Gorilla suit WAS the misdirection. Because you have no way to verify if the first gorilla suit with cymbals was in fact Georgie. When she was in the cage the whole time. It would be much harder to pull off if you specifically saw HER playing the cymbals AND also emerge from the cage.
Besides, they were both wearing different boots.

Of course, the "mechanics“ of this trick are pretty old and any magician and even layman can decipher this one pretty easily.
But it was mainly about the presentation and the story regarding „misdirection“ and it's purpose from a magicians point of view.
And they visualized it pretty beautifully - because most of the people didn‘t see that gorilla punch line coming. And that was the whole purpose of the trick - not the mechanical execution itself.
Before being magician, Penn used to be door to door salesman of encyclopedia.

No one sneaked the gorilla into the cage. She was just waiting there.
The other gorilla was taller.
We all know the girl was in there in the first place. The question is where the chicken went.. my guess is the gorilla creates a lot of noise so that you won't hear the chicken's agony after it being squeezed dead.
Funny! Real guess: pouch inside gorilla costume. P&T once answered that hat-rabbits generally start in coat pouches; therefore, I figure reverse rabbit trick.
Teller took it away
Jimmy is the misdirection. He's always the misdirection.
and misinformed
Notice that when they opened the cage at the end, the green cloth background was no longer there (nor the chicken). She was hiding behind that cloth the whole time: She's a showgirl and very flexible. The other gorilla with the cymbals was a different person.
there's a reason why he leans against the box - he stabilized the box as she crawled towards the front; she was in the box the entire time hiding behind a false back evidenced by the change in background when you could clearly see the chicken
I love how they thought of havin Penn sorta lean on the box the whole time to cover up it rocking about while the woman inside moves in front of the chicken.

Love these guys!
AN MEDIA. Ive watched them 30+ yrs. Theyre great
Love you
AN MEDIA. Why
it’s amazing how they tell you exactly what they’re gonna do, and still pull it off anyways.
Very simple. There was a purple velvet cover over the back and and suspended from the ceiling of the cage which was no longer there when the gorilla was inside. This is significant. The cloth on the back is to make the cloth at the top less obvious but it also provides a space for her legs. Velvet is a good material because it doesn’t reveal shapes very well. There is enough space at the top for a skinny contortionist to ‘fold herself up’. She is probably hanging onto hooks and wedged against small ledges in the corners. So Teller comes out and takes the chicken away that the girl hands him. The noisy dancing gorilla is not there to hide Teller, but to mask any noise the girl in the cage makes while dropping the covering, removing any cables or latches, and unfolding herself into the base where the chicken had been. The cloth on the back had to go so no one would notice the missing top compartment and also because that is more practical than rehanging it behind her. The base was probably lined in purple velvet so as to disguise the materials from the top and back of the cage for those higher up in the auditorium. It also relies on the fact that the audience is not as close as the cameras, and video resolution helps hide things from viewers at home so no one other than Jimmy Fallon is close enough to see the details and as host, he is not going to spoil the act. Very slickly done, but also an incredibly easy trick to perform if you can find a suitably small and flexible contortionist and a chicken that can be trained to never make a noise.
Chicken was very close to the front of the cage.
Gorrila was in the cage, behind the chicken.
There were two gorrilas
she was already in there with the chicken
No spoilers!
They let it cover behind the bird cage that where she was behind that cover
Weather that was even an actual chicken or if teller even grabbed it from the cage or it wss also a prop. But pen and teller have always been more about story and presentation then really about fooling people.
Good job harry Potter
I thought it was real magic. Thanks for ruining my life.
I like when NBC made Jay Leno disappear, and then re-appear 7 months later.
Clucky McCluckface lol
Note that when they first show the chicken there is a back to the cage. You can't see through it. When they reveal the gorilla in the end, there's no back to the cage. You can see right through to the back of the stage.
The girl in the gorilla costume was in there the whole time behind the false back of the cage. When Penn covered the cage, she lifted the divider and handed the chicken to Teller.
The dancing gorilla was someone else.
3:11 the girls in the 3rd raw first seat from the aisle didn't notice Teller snatching the chicken
