FAQ
An occasionally asked question: Did I lie to Penn & Teller?
No.
During the performance there are 2 people that know how the trick is done. Me (obviously) and Mike Close. Mike is the magic consultant for the show, and for lack of a better way to put it, Fooler judge and referee for the show. He is the person Penn & Teller are talking with when they are trying to figure out the trick while Alyson and I chat. If I were to have lied, the cameras would stop and I'd be called out for it.
The pea was in the walnut.
So why did P & T ask about the handkerchief?
My guess is to eliminate that possible method for the TV audience.
So why did I use the handkerchief?
When the walnut is cracked open in addition to shell fragments going everywhere, sometimes the signed pea flies off the table. It's rare, but it happens. Watching three grown men search for a signed cork pea would not make for good television.
Could Penn or Teller have cracked open the walnut?
Yes, but given the time constraints of TV, and the need to expedite the process, I did.
That permanent marker joke is perfect.
Reminds me of that Santana song that goes something like "I got a black magic marker"
@Gibson Wade Perfect comment.
Now how did teller keep a straight face on that😂
Thats magic
it wasn't a joke though.

4:14 that look was one of utter despair by Teller. In that moment he genuinely thought he'd ruined the trick by picking up the metal cup. What a lightning fast quip by Doc tho!
It wouldn't have mattered. The metal cup was empty at that point. He hid the pea in his hand, then when he took the wallet out of his pocket, he took out the walnut shell with a pre-carved hole in it. Then he popped the pea into the walnut. When he brings his hand from below the table, you can see him insert the walnut into the cup.
@PugFaceMedia ah yes. The know it all who has to attempt to ruin the trick for others while still not getting the point of the post. Ty sir for showing up.
@@PugFaceMedia Yes, that happens right after 4:50. I'm not sure why anyone would get upset about you revealing that, as it's in the Penn & Teller spirit. LOL, "ruin the trick for others", GFTO.
The magic was fun, but the magician was legendary. I love good magic, but when the person performing it wins your heart because of his character and not just his trick, it says something.
Well done, sir. I hope you're soaring high in fame, because you deserve it.

4:13 That's a genuine reaction, as a fellow magician, Teller knows how horrifying it is when someone messes up your act!
Luckily teller didn't ruin anything because the pea was already out and the shell wasn't in yet
I suspect the Doc expects half of the participants to do the same thing, with that embarrassed moment at not being able to follow directions and afraid they ruined the trick. In fact I bet it is why he asks them to put their finger on the cup to begin with.
I was thinking the same thing 🤣
"I'll talk to him later" was a good line 😂
@@falcore91 It also puts a LOT of focus on those cups and whether or not the trick has been compromised, immediately before the moment where he puts the pea in the walnut, and beneath the cup. It's like mental misdirection. It basically keeps you from being complacent so that when he goes to pull the wallet out, you're not like "uh oh, he's doing something weird now...." the whole trick is full of odd, distracting moments. Thats why P&T were saying there were so many little things they'd never seen before....they weren't sure what to keep track of or which parts were actually relevant to his method.
I watched it thousand times and I still HAVE NO FRICKING IDEA how the heck did he make this marker to be permanent. True magician, ladies and gentlemen!
It will permanently anyways be a marker!
Here’s my guess on how he did the last trick! It’s actually really simple.
At 3:44 he uses sleight of hand to take the pea. Underneath the table is a secret compartment where the nut already is, most likely in two halves and pre-glued for easy assembly. At 4:37 he hides his hands for a few seconds and puts the pea inside the nut. Then at 4:51 he moves the shot glass closer to him, and as it switches hands he places the nut underneath it.
I love how every single magician on this entire series has the shaky hands. It has to be super nerve wracking to perform for penn and teller. It just shows how great this show is.
While absolutely true, I can't help but think that shaky hands would actually make it a bit harder for someone to notice a move. If they're always making those little movements, it's really hard to tell what's nerves and what's concealing some sleight of hand.
I think he kept it shaky to imply that he's not taking the pea out of the shell like he did in the first two instances, like lifting with two fingers and leaving it at a distance to make it clear to them that it's not in his hands.
His hands started shaking right after he put the pea into the final shell. He was nervous that they'd spotted it.
They are legends in the magic world. who wouldn’t be nervous?
agree
if you watch closely at 3:48, you can see that i have no idea how the trick works
When he slid the glass with the shell under the metal cup, it tipped a little and thats when he removed the pea
@@Siegmeyer_ well fair enough but i also never proclaimed to know how the trick worked
@@swellswagal I see what you mean, OP wasn’t sure as I’m not either. You might be right but I see so many people that might understand a little part (or none at all) and they think they know they entire trick. I’m not saying that’s you by the way, but that was why I commented initially
@@swellswagal Well, you might catch a couple of things in that act but Penn pretty much said that everything was obvious to them except for how the pea got into the wallnut in the end, for which they have no explanation.
@@Chuckiele the nut was split in the middle under the tin cup. When he uncovers the nut he does a good job of hiding it, but not good enough for the close up. That is when he slipped the palmed pea into the nut. You can tell the nut is split by the way he holds it together even when setting it on the cloth. He doesn't release the nut until it's covered. He then really tries to smash the nut so that it breaks in more than one spot to not show the split down the middle.
the most shocking bit is how Penn managed to write his initials on such a tiny object
That's why it's called a Magic Marker ;)

This kind of magic is my absolute favorite. No big props, just real, honest to goodness skill. It reminds me a lot of Paul Gertner’s act, which I like a lot too.
We know that a lot of it is slight of hand, but the fact that we can’t actually pick up on it is what makes it so cool. It’s also great to do it right in front of Penn and Teller.

ACQUITTED
Honestly, I was surprised how Penn wasn't trying to work around his guess with word play. Just straight up asked.
I think they had a feeling they were wrong. They didnt see the slight of hand but that was the only explanation they could use. And there was none needed since it was inside the walnut
He always does that in order to maintain the secret to the trick, but if he had been correct on this, it would be simple sleight of hand. Not much of a secret to keep.
I disagree. I think they really enjoy being fooled. Much like a great chef loves a good meal prepared by someone else.
They're only allowed to ask one question or make one guess.. Obviously, they'd get it if they were allowed to go for their second or third choice. They used to explain these rules in the early episode, but they stopped. I guess they assumed everyone would know by then. They were thinking of not making their regular viewers hear the same rules explained every episode, rather than making it clear to people watching random episodes on RUclips, years later
@@dlethe I agree. After decades in magic they must have seen just about every variation of every trick ever created so when something comes along that really fools them, it must be a genuine delight however much Penn, always the showman, pretends to be annoyed sometimes - and I bet they learn the secret after the show!
You watch one episode just one episode and boom you are addicted.

3:54 He removes the pea from under the shell as he pushes it towards Teller
3:59 He drops the pea onto his lap
4:38 He put the pea inside the new shell (which probably has a hole in it) on his lap while he reaches for the wallet (a distraction)
4:47 He reaches for the pea with his left hand
4:51 He the slipped the new shell with the pea under the cup
Also notice how he always has his thumb over a very specific part of the shell and only removes his thumb when the napkin is covering it.
There’s definitely a hole in that shell.
You have the eyes of a fox and the ears of a fox. Brilliant breakdown. I can't believe how subtle that was but you're definitely right.
Sherlock junior you are right
Your 3:59 is wrong. The pea is kept under his left hand the whole time, up until the moment he drops both his hands onto his lap. That is why he keeps his left hand either: open and landed on the table, or close as if holding something. Apart from that step, my analysis agrees with all your other steps.
You aren't helping. Did you not read his pinned comment on top? Right or wrong, you shouldn't be blatantly exposing an effect, especially after he made it clear not to.
I think the coolest part of this routine is that you did pretty much everything you could to turn the crux of "knowing" the trick into seeing exactly when and how that specific pea gets into that specific walnut.
It cuts down the universe of possible ways you did the trick so much that you're basically throwing down the gauntlet and saying, "Was my sleight of hand good enough to fool Penn and Teller?"
That’s exactly what the show is about. Doing a trick they don’t know the slight of hand or the method.
Same thing Eric Meade did, although he more or less said it to their faces.
The joy and relief when he heared the words "you fooled us". That's rare in this show and puts a big smile on my face. Good job!
Thanks for stopping by.
Much of magic is about the mystery, so if you post comments going into detail about method, right or wrong, try not to be a buzzkill.

Your humility is so refreshing. Taking a second to express how excited you were and the line “the honour is mine”. You’re also an amazing magician and comedian.
I cannot even imagine how many times he practiced that. It was many steps of split second timing that all had to be performed perfectly. What an artist.
Plot twist: he just wanted a signed pea to sell on eBay.
This was definitely one of my favorite performances from this show. I knew the moves just like P&T but the charm was what made this so good. Then the pea in the nut. I've seen objects in impossible places before but the fact that it was signed and the load was so clean made this great. I really loved this. I think many people now days get this feeling that if it's not some super big thing like a levitation or whatnot that more modern magicians have made popular, that it's not mystifying. This made me feel like I did as a kid when I saw my first magic trick.
I personally think that those over the top things are kind of boring. You need tons of equipment for them to work and no real skill (except for being in the right place, like behind the mirror, on time). A small trick like this here needs training, skill, barely any equipment and is entertaining and astonishing.
@@MyRegardsToTheDodo the walnut part might need some equipment
A walnut with a whole in it?
@@lomiification I've seen walnut and peanut shells with cards or $bills folded in them, and even rings and a diamond earring! Not much equipment needed but NO IDEA how/when he loaded it for this routine. VERY NICE!
The craziest thing to me is the signed pea, cus that means he doesnt have extras, everyone else I've seen do this trick does it with one or two more balls and palms them, which is why penn made a point to say it not being foam was a big deal.
@@daslynnter9841 That's what I liked about the earring or ring vanish, as it was later found in a walnut shell. They definitely weren't duplicates because they were borrowed from a randomly picked audience member. A guy I know who does this occasionally works at the Magic Castle. (Not sure if he's done that there or not.)
This was probably one of the best performances I’ve seen on the show; not because the trick is a personal favorite (which it it), but because of the way Doc connected to Penn/Teller, the audience, and even the viewers at home. If that’s what magic’s about, then this performance demonstrates a master at work.
I watched the whole act at 1/4 speed, and guess what I just wasted a hole lot more time. So slick and entertaining well done
-Knuckles are tucked in on his last 3 fingers for holding the pea in between the fingers.
-using quick slight of hand while moving the shells around, he slightly lifts the shells releasing the pea then catching with his tucked fingers. when the pea is released its always directly behind the shell and caught immediately by his fingers. hard to see through cameras even in slow mo.
-for the last trick he released the pea from the shell/glass right before moving it to the front corner. he then has the pea in hand till he puts its in the closed shell under the table before grabbing the wallet. he then moves the silver cup to the back corner places the closed shell that he pulled from underneath the table under the cup. with said pea inside.
sleight of hand was top tier
Bringing them up on stage is something I always thought was incredibly brave. This is crazy
You broke the rules! The pea ended up inside the shell, not under it!
jk, great job
Thanks for kind words, but dang it! Now I have to send back the FU trophy!
@@docdixon-magician3531 well, congrats on having it while you did. :D

Technically speaking the pea was still under the top half of the walnut he never said the other half couldn’t be under it at the same time :p

It was still under half the shell lol
You know, I've spent the better part of 2 days looking at Penn and Teller Fool Us routines...
Some segments are better than others, but what really sets some of the performances apart aren't whether or not they fool Pen or Teller, which is usually great to see in its own right. But rather, you know you see a great magician when they are genuinely passionate about what they do and are excited to be on a stage to share it with two other magicians they clearly admire and respect. Just look at him celebrate when he wins the trophy!
I don't care very much for the egotistical types who are looking for glory, and this guy strikes me as a seasoned, well-adjusted performer, who has a great sense of humor, and a great act; even prompting Penn (one of the loudest and most refined stage personas I've seen in magic) to state "what a great routine, great routine" at 9:10. I love how passionate the magician is when they fool Penn & Teller....He was excited as a little kid.....great!
You seem to have grasped the most important thing about being a magician. Magicians are entertainers first and foremost. Some magic performers get lost in the technical skill of their routine and forget to be entertaining. Others are great entertainers, but lack the skill to amaze with their magic. With you, the skill and the entertainment just naturally flow together, and it makes the whole act very entertaining and very impressive at the same time. Only very few people manage to do both well. Hey!! I'm Zahara from the GA ren faire! I needed to check out your video of penn and teller. Your performance was amazing and I really hope I can see you again. ❤️
You Sir represent the standard of magic that lifts us all as performers, the reason that I love magic, the reason I studied magic and the reason I continue to learn! What a glorious experience to witness that level of mastery presented with such ease and charm. No hype, no dancing bears or flying trapdoors- just great, classic magic! Thank you!
Demolition Man fans: This is how you use the three sea shells.
You stole a heart in a devastated country with your magic and awesome jokes. Who said true magic does not exist?
Love and respect from Iran Doc. YES SIR.
Doc Dixon is the best entertainer to ever be on that stage. I enjoy his routines from being to end.
The thing I loved most about this show was that to fool was not ever about bragging rights, it was creating something amazing that your peers/heroes/etc couldn't catch- you just forwarded magical/performance knowledge.
To "win" only developed magic in the most beautiful way.
I'm sure that giving away the"trophy" was not the whole point of this show.
And even if you didn't "win"... We loved your performance Your artistry
Such a beautiful show.
As an audio guy, I have to say. Your voice is a pleasure to hear. No homo
Such a lovely, inspiring act. Kudos!
Woooow. Hannibal actually leaving A comment here! You Sir get greater by the day. Love your acts.
Hannibal!! Just as amazing as this guy! All great magicians!
You need to be here on foolus..!!
@@knaftasticedc956 I've auditioned several times ... Never made the cut.
@@HannibalSpeaks well that is a shame...you definitely make the cut in my book..keep fooling people anyway brother..
He is removing the pea by just slightly lifting the shell as he moves glass and shell towards the front (3:52), then he places the pea in a shell prepared with glue when he takes down both hands (3:36) and reaches for his wallet. The whole nut is placed under the cup when he removes the cup and moves it to the right (4:48) you can clearly see how he is cupping his hand over the opening and tilting the cup slightly forward. folding over the cloth to crush the nut hides possible hiccups when breaking the shells. Classic tricks very well performed!
The lift and drop for the first two rounds were visible. How you managed to put it inside a nut was incredible
That Mike Close guy is such a helpful dude, hope he's doing great
Love re-vising this trick once in a while

May you suffer a hundred rick rolls for this atrocity.
I won't forget this offence
Damn he could’ve called it “Smallest Dixon magic”
8:37 When you get sent down to the principal's office.
Just goes to show, so many times Magic Greats like Penn and Teller have been fooled by simple piece of slight of hand - only because the person was a great showman and really fun, such that it all just blends in. Great watch.
Crazy good slight of hand. For the first round I had to watch it in slow motion more than once to see how he did that. Didn't even bother with the rest. Well played sir.
