You don't know the whole truth. In a few cases, magicians complain that Penn and Teller didn't detect the trick and didn't get the trophy (it's on YT). They were advised not to complain and to be happy to perform in the show (statement of one Italian magician). Old friends are given trophies out of friendship. Penn and Teller had to publicly come forward and explain their actions because the rules were blatantly broken, which are broken primarily by the producers to get ratings. Also, the producers' cuts are unpunished, creating the unresolvable nature of the trick, thus TV viewers cannot judge the magician's actual performance. If the magician has influence by some association, Penn and Teller prefer to correct their statement so that their show does not become a tabloid target.

At the 2013 TEDx in Houston, Ben offered this thought in his keynote...
"The secret of a great trick isn't the method. The method behind the magic often times is unattractive and disappointing. The real artistry in magic, the beauty in magic, lies in the artistry behind the scenes."
Ben Jackson really does have that artistry. Watching him up close is simply amazing. Congratulations on being awarded 'You Fooled Us'!

My guess is that the magic began at 3:51 when he puts the pointer down on the table. He puts the ring down with it. The camera cuts to a far away shot so you can't follow the ring after it passes through the pointer. And then you never see it again until the very end. Ask yourself this question: Why did he need such a long table cover that goes down to the floor? My guess is that there is an assistant under that table. When he placed the pointer down, the ring was with it. Then he had to 'buy' a lot of time for his assistant to grab the ring and put it into the jar and then place it in the basket from under the table. The assistant places the ring in the jar. That is why Ben wastes so much time before the big reveal. Just my guess.

I thought so, too, BUT: presumably that’s what Penn & Teller initially thought happened. So, I’m not sure that’s what happened. It’s possible that the table cloth was put there to fool Penn & Teller into thinking that’s how it was done. Put differently, we have two mysteries not one: how he did it, and what P&T thought he did.

    • @NuminorTheFool

Its in this instance that video playback helps greatly, and there was no extra person. Its all slight of hand. At 3:52 he uses slight of hand to put the ring under his watch wrist strap. Pausing at 4:06 you can see the ring some what under the strap. Then at 4:25 when he claps his hands together he uses his right pinky to grab the ring from the strap then when he goes to pick up the yarn and the needle you can see him push the ring first into the box, which is still all hidden by the extra balls of yarn. From then each time he goes to grab a yarn its to do an addition stage of pushing the ring case into the ball, which is wrapped in such a way that the side is never covered so you can insert the box when needed, then another move to get it into the jar and a quick final move to put the lid on and screw it lightly shut. Its still all impressive slight of hand but its one of those tricks that gets absolutely destroyed by video playback.

Honesty from a couple of magicians! Well, you still fooled me. Great routine.

Wow, throughout most of the performance I was surprised how well I could follow and thought it was basically just foam balls. But that ending... I was increasingly pushed to the edge of the seat until my mind was thoroughly blown :D What a spectacular performance!

Ben is awesome. I think he even knew they probably did not know but out of respect he didn’t say anything but pen and teller being as awesome as they are showed true class

This was amazing dude. I saw how disappointed you were when they first said you didn't fool them. I could tell you thought maybe they did and you did the amazing/awesome/respectable thing by accepting defeat. Then you got the trophy! Couldn't ask for a more entertaining fool us segment.

I got the first move only because I already know it. Then, I was lost. Amazing routine.
