Thanks for the review!!! At first I didn’t like the Crystalsky vs my iPad Pro 9.7. However after using it and acclimating to it as well as learning the finer details from you in your video I’m sold on the crystalsky.
Hello Elvis , I have read many comments about the screen. The majority are talking about the screen being broken after a short period of use, since you own one. Can you recommend buying it? Or it is not practical ..
Thank you for your wonderful video, I am in the middle of choosing in between the P4 pro+ V2.0 and P4pro V2.0 with Crystal sky and now I think the Crystal Sky is a better investment for me.
This is a must have especially if you do any professional work or if you got the cash to spend. When you’re spending more than 1500$ for a drone why would you want to just use a phone/tablet, go with a dedicated display just like this. 5.5 would be a good solution for the Mavic line especially the Mavic Air.
A UK dealer with China connections who paid for and ordered 10 but only fluked one which I was fortunate to get. No sign of any others coming he says. I thought that they would start to appear after I got mine but they still haven't.
Thanks for doing a review Bill on the CrystalSky monitors. I like my dedicated mini iPad 4 and Nvidia K1 Shield tablets with sun shades. and even though I like the features of the CrystalSky, I would probably wait for the brighter version. My opinion, at 1000 nits, it still is not that great of a difference over a good sunshade. The DJI Goggles also have made a big difference for me. They are incredible but requires a spotter. Thats a problem because most of the time I am solo. Great job as usual Bill, very professional. Like your new studio. Addy
I have the Ultra Bright 7.85 for my P4P well I love it super bright and no issues so far and well worth the money spent (as long as it is usable in future DJI Drones).
Just to add, third party apps such as Litchi, Kittyhawk and facebook are now supported and hopefully more like Drone Deploy will follow soon, I can't stress enough though, the Ultrabright model is the best option. I have also iPad mini 4 for Drone Deploy but once it'll be supported by CS I'm ditching it for the same reasons you've mentioned. Batteries, brightness, overheating (except when you use x-naut cooling case) and flexibility. Great review btw!
I have the ultra brite 7.85 for my P4 and will NEVER go back to tablets. On the Mavic Air , the large monitor was so heavy it was constantly working loose from the controller , so I got the small CS and it is a reasonable solution for this problem. Overall I would say they are worth the $$$, but I would say that their DJI centric utility is a bit of a downer. It would be nice to use it with a dslr for example.
James do you still have your 7.85"? Did you have touch screen issues where you'd have to hit something many times to get it to work? Crashes with the Go4 App? As much as I love the screen brightness, not sure the other issues make me want it that bad. Your thoughts will be very helpful.
5.5 is perfect travel size for me 7 way too big for my Mavic controller. New Mavic/Crystalsky cast bracket on order, I’ll be made up! Screen size simply a personal preference. Nice vid, many thanks.
I have a Mavic and spark , so I went to 5inch smaller one. It just fits the controller better. But ya I would love to try out or get the bigger one if I ever purchase an Inspire 2
The 5.5 is a good buy when using it with the Mavic for HDMI out to other monitors or sources like live streaming to Sling Studio which DJI is partnered with.
I am using the CrystalSky Monitor for my Inspire2. My problem seems to be; "Where are my logs?" When I use inflight apps such as LAANC programs, there is an application to fill out for Pilot Risk. Pilot risk takes into account the total hours you have flying a specific UAS or sUAS total airtime. Since DJI does not have a link to several programs with its CrystalSky I am handicapped to provide log times. The microchip slots on the CrystalSky have an overflow purpose or a detailed purpose? For the big Bucks we spend with DJI it seems that what with ADP and RI (Aircraft Detection Program and Remote Identification) being installed in new IMU's one would seem that DJI could have some collusion with 3rd Party Programmers or design its own LAANC program, cause we know DJI has its nose quite deep up the FAA Organization and wants to keep the market here in the USa.

I'm on the same boat, the smaller monitor isn't worth the price since for a hundred more you can take advantage of a bigger monitor with a lot more room to focus on details, also comes with two batteries that will pretty much last you an entire day of shooting in the middle of a golf course.
DJI needs to unlock this device so one can access Google Maps with other drones like the EVO. BTE, the touch screen is particularly problematic in the corners and not always responsive in the main.
Will my controller still be able to fit inside the original DJI box after the mounting bracket is installed? I have answered my own question after receiving my bracket. The controller will NOT fit inside the original Phantom 4 Pro styrofoam case unless you cut away some of the styrofoam that surrounds the bracket.
Excellent presentation, as usual. Bill, Dji told me that the Crystal Sky, 7.85 high brightness monitor is 1,000 nts. And the P4P+ (plus) monitor is also 1,000 nts - why buy a Crystal Sky- supplied aircraft, other than for its larger size, rather than a P4P+ aircraft which is less expensive? Lee
Many thanks for that. Your video helped a lot. Why they did not make the screen non-reflective beats me. At the price they are they should have. Would a non-reflective screen help?
Help! I can’t figure out why I can’t see the little gradient square that allows you to see your d-log footage in rec.709. I see it when I run the app on the iPhone , but not on my Crystalsky 5.5 display. I’ve updated everything.
Ok so I read somewhere that if you do NOT have the bracket you can power the screen from the controller of my my P4P - it will NOT charge the external battery but does it power the screen until I obtain the bracket? I.E placing it on the current bracket like one would a phone or tablet.

@@BillNicholsTV Do you still have yours? I'm debating buying from a friend the Ultra but the touch screen issue and crashes, not to mention No warranty, makes me Leary. Only used 3 different days over past 4-5 days and each time some issues.
I take it that Crystal Sky works on both Inspire 1 and 2? Does that mean that both the original DJI Go App and the DJI Go 4 Apps are loaded onboard out of the box?
Bill, please fact check your statement on materials construction. I'll wager that the outer frame is aluminum or a magnesium alloy which acts as a heat sink. Note how it is cool to the touch when removed from storage , prior to use. I'm not going to put mine to the knife to proove this, vbut I'm 90% sure....
Bill, I have Phantom 4 with HDMI module installed. Will I still have HDMI video output from my controller If I connect CrystalSky to it or would it be disabled? Using my P4 controller clean HDMI video output for live streaming.

What is the resolution coming out of the hdmi I know the hdmi module for the phantom 4 is 720. Is it better than that? Hopefully it’s 1080. Thanks. I also sub up to your channel
Great review. When the Ultra Bright CS makes it out, Do you think the ultra bright will be just overkill- ie will you upgrade? ? You mentioned Phantom 4 Pro+ crashing a lot. I have the P4P, DJI Replaced my controller for similar issue_ video feed totally would freeze. How stable has the Crystal Sky been? Last Q: did you have the “Red Color Prop Issue” commonly seen on the Inspire Forum? If so, what was your fix?
West Michigan Drone my red prop rattled, I put a little paper shin there, all good (front left prop). The 2000 will be worth it if you deal in daylight a bit, I have someone that wants my 7.85 so I will probably pick it up. Thanks for the note on the P4P!
Looks like you need a hood, in the sun it's not as good as purported. But still with a hood it will be great and offers the use without a hood out of the direct sunlight. Well thats just talking about the brightness and nothing else. I will be picking up this weekend but not for the brightness issue.
I would say depending on the user, and in some instances potentially. I haven't had to use a sunshade at all, but I can see someone using one. The quality of the screen and brightness in sunlight doesn't come across well in video when comparing to other screens though. Good choice to pick one up, you'll like it I think.
It looks like your old, with aging eyesight, hood or no hood is not going to fix anything lol. These monitors work excellent in direct, bright, sunlight, no hood necessary. We just used them for the first time on a shoot in the Swiss Alps and they worked perfectly in the whitewash of the snow and noon hour sun. The recorded video does NO justice to the actual brightness of this monitor, as should be expected by anyone who knows what a recorded video of a screen can reveal. Bill is just being nice. People need to stop jumping to conclusions before they first-hand information.
First off there's no reason to be a dick to someone, period. For some people's preference it will be bright enough for some it won't. I did call out that the recording doesn't really do it justice in a comment below, completely agree, in person it's a great difference between something like an iPad mini or iPhone and the CrystalSky. also - i'll see if I can dig into the USB LTE potential, I remember seeing that somewhere as well.
@@jacknees1405 Yeah 5 year later I'm laughing at you, what a joke these monitors are no longer supported by dji, load of rubbish. Oh yeah its not the eye sight or "being old" LOL
+richard rae not yet at least, remains to be seen how they will open up to third parties - ever have any issues with litchi? What are you flying with it?
I know I’m late to this party but found this as I looked into buying one. I don’t know what is going on with pricing but it’s crazy. 5.5 is $529 and the larger one is $809 now! A difference of $270. And, yes, I was looking at the 1000nit version in both cases. So I’m going to flip it around. You said if you’re happy with the size of your phone then don’t buy the 5.5. With this price spread I’d say if you are happy with the size of your phone the BUY IT for brightness and you won’t be disappointed in the size of the 5.5. Since I’m ok with my iPhone 7 I’m not spending another $270 for a larger screen. Great video though.
Supposedly the USB port on the side of the monitor will accept Cell network dongle. Not tested this personally, but I did read that will work... no link to where I read that. Take it for what you will.
Big app issues with these monitors. Huge crashing issues and unable to power off. Just look at what everyone is saying in the forums. Big issues. Not sure if this will ever be fixed by DJI. The Android app has had issues for years now.
First of all it's 699 and then the problems my Apple iPhone does not drop connection this new monitor droppeds connection and then around 30% of the times the video footage is distorted which never happened on my Apple iPhone with this new monitor I had 8 videos three were messed up and then to put the icing on a cake it shut off on me two times had to reboot it so I gave it a chance I did a master reset calibrate it went back for another test and it failed now I know why Amazon customers gave it bad reviews you minus those problems and the screen is perfect but until those problems are fixed I will stick with my Apple iPhone and the only reason I purchased it was for the brightness and the clarity but what good is when there is all those other issues I own a mavic and I owned Phantom 4 Pro Plus basically screens are the same not all the features but the same brightness and I never had problems with video footage never got distorted and I never lost connection I wish DJI would have made the mavic with a screen a 6-inch screen would have been perfect
Hey Joe - At the time I did the video (October) pricing was what I said it was. It sounds like you are relying on the screen to record your video and not your drone? I haven't had the experience you have. 6+ months later and it is just as solid for me and a great tool. Maybe you have on with issues, I would consider doing a return and replace on it. I have these now on both controllers (I bought them, not provided by DJI at all) and they have been solid for me. I have heard of some issues with the initial Ultra-Brights but haven't had an opportunity to use those. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
no third party app i got one of these and i use it for my phantom 4 it works beautifully no crashes nothing at all brightness is amazing i am working on getting a inspire 2 now thanks bill
I have a Mav Mount for the Mavic with the Crystal Sky adapter and just received the 7.85 CS. The adapter is overpriced ($30?) but the balance in your hands is nice and the the CS is really amazing. Puts the controller behind the monitor so you have to be familiar with all the buttons but what an improvement.
Hey Zeb, I haven’t had any issues like that. I know there was an overheating false alarm that was fixed in firmware but I use mine all the time, in hot situations, never had an issue.
Really? You spend any time on the forums? Seems pretty common. But let's keep it real upbeat here so DJI will keep feeding you "First Look" products. Right?
Not first look, DJI as never fed me (I am not nearly big enough), I bought these just like you did and I use them like crazy. You didn't see where I said that I would not buy the 5.5 and I don't think it has much use? Like I said, there were a number of people getting warnings that were caused by firmware issues. If you are having issues, and don't need a firmware update, then return it, or contact support or whatever. I know a number of people with CrystalSky's and I have heard (and mine does) get warm / very warm to the touch, never had it had an issue though.
if you can browse the internet on it then you can install apps on it... anyone that has had a stripped down android device that is specific to a product knows this...
BillNicholsTV it is exactly what you are talking about. You are the one that mentioned you can't install apps on it. And that if that is what you are hoping this might not be for you. Not most but many would love to run alternative apps. And telling people they can't when they can would benefit the product more.
I specifically talked about google play or other app stores not being available. Sure, you can root the device, and then that root will be fixed in the next release, I am not talking about anything to circumvent the normal process of installing apps.
DJI only allows signed apps, you have to change some core system files, it's isn't just copying an APK file over. And for me, it's not worth it, you have a high chance of getting bricked if DJI wants it to be. As of now you have to replace the stock installD file with a modified one. With security issues that already exist throughout android (and I use several android devices) I would recommend that most people start installing modified system files, or downloaded, unsigned software to their devices. If you want to, knock yourself out, but on the CrystalSky it isn't just straightforward for most
Paul Craddock I love people assuming we get stuff from DJI for free to review. Not at all, I bought both of them to see which or if either of them were a good option and I kept the 7.85” because it was a huge improvement over the iPhone and the tablet I was using.
Paul since you mention pounds I assume you're in Uk where you don't have much sun lol, but I'm in Florida and using a phone SUCKS. Just got the 7.85 ultra and it's fantastic!
I have to say Bill I love your videos, but this is a classic overpriced DJI add on. I have a 7 inch monitor that I use with my video kit, which has 4k resolution and it cost half the money. Come on DJI £450 for the 5.5 inch screen is robbery, yes you have an operating system, however its Android OS and we all know the stability of that OS with the DJI flight software. I have never had any problems using my iPad, so why would you buy this over an iPad? Beats me.
Thanks for the review. Very usefull but you forgot two things to mention: 1. the 7.85 comes with two batteries and the 5.5 with just one (worth about € 70,-) 2. IMPORTANT : for charging the batteries Mavic Pro users will have to buy a Phantom or Inspire charger because the Mavic charger is not capable of charging the batteries My advice for Mavic Pro users who want to use a Crystalsky monitor: go to Thor's Drone World for the perfect mount ! * the internal battery is charged by the external battery

I take it that Crystal Sky works on both Inspire 1 and 2? Does that mean that both the original DJI Go App and the DJI Go 4 Apps are loaded onboard out of the box?
Hey Paul - That;s correct - thanks for watching, cheers
Did you mention how good it work in extreme temperature
Anyone heard when the ultra will be available?
Great video & thanks for not unboxing. I subbed. BTW love the glasses :)
I would have to agree with you Dave. 👍🏻
Great video 👍
Thanks 907!
I assume you will be getting and reviewing the ultra as well correct, I have had one on order at B&H for 5 mo
Yep - I spoke to DJI directly , they do not know when it will be shipping with any real quantity
Hello! The large difference in brightness between tab s2 and 7.85" CrystalSky?
Can I use this with a Mavic 2pro? Is it compatible?
Bill, I have Phantom 4 with HDMI module installed. Will I still have HDMI video output from my controller If I connect CrystalSky to it or would it be disabled? Using my P4 controller clean HDMI video output for live streaming.
Hello , I have read many comments about the screen. The majority are talking about the screen being broken after a short period of use, since you own one. Can you recommend buying it? Or it is not practical ..
I have had zero problems with mine - highly recommend, and I have two of them
What is the resolution coming out of the hdmi I know the hdmi module for the phantom 4 is 720.
Thanks for the note on the P4P!
does it accept HDMI input from another source? like dvd player or any hdmi
Are there any recent updates that allow you to use the Crystal with Mavic Pro 2
Can this monitor be used as a substitute for DJI's new FPV Goggles?
Is it HD with super low latency?
Any issues with the DJI Go4 app crashing on the CrystalSky?
Is there anyway to MOD this monitor for Digital FPV ?
Tus Nalgas Son Mias mid in what way? It has hdmi in and out
Has the screen ever crashed at all? Thanks
I use Litchi all the time,so a Crystalsky is no good to me at the moment.
+richard rae not yet at least, remains to be seen how they will open up to third parties - ever have any issues with litchi? What are you flying with it?
BillNicholsTV Never had any problems with Litch.I use it with a Phantom 4 and my Mavic.
Thanks for the review Bill! The screen looks great. Did they increase the price? It now shows as $699!
Thanks Ali - I think when I bought it was on sale for a bit, at $699 it's still a great buy
This is a 7.85 High or Ultra Monitor?
both, there are 2 versions
No network connection other than wifi?? I'll stick to my phone.
Correct, if needed, I tether to my phone
Supposedly the USB port on the side of the monitor will accept Cell network dongle. Not tested this personally, but I did read that will work... no link to where I read that. Take it for what you will.
Big app issues with these monitors. Huge crashing issues and unable to power off. Just look at what everyone is saying in the forums. Big issues. Not sure if this will ever be fixed by DJI. The Android app has had issues for years now.
John Wood haven’t experienced that at all, the 7.85 has been completely solid
I haven't had much issues, pretty much same stability as iOS version
Are you going to get the x7?
+Dawson Boyle yes I am, should have it as soon as it’s released
How many people on here use third party apps? Does that keep you from considering a Crystalsky?
no third party app i got one of these and i use it for my phantom 4 it works beautifully no crashes nothing at all brightness is amazing i am working on getting a inspire 2 now thanks bill
It did until I found out today that with the new update you can now add some third party apps !
It’s use for mavic?
iNFinite Pictures he said yes but i dont think so coz its preaty big
I have a Mav Mount for the Mavic with the Crystal Sky adapter and just received the 7.85 CS. The adapter is overpriced ($30?) but the balance in your hands is nice and the the CS is really amazing. Puts the controller behind the monitor so you have to be familiar with all the buttons but what an improvement.
I’m going to use my iPad mini 4... I’m getting that new blk p4 pro .... it’s really blk to me lol
nice!
ThatGuyScott // Question!
When using the iPad, is the ipad has to have internet connection?
Xellos Metallium use the otg cable, that wires it directly to the controller.
who has one for sale..? hard to find.
I should say the 7.85
u can install 3rd party apps on it, it is possible now
Unbox therapy except he buys the product instead of company’s giving it to him.
i have the 7.85"
$699 now, i'll stick with the ipad mini 4
My new 7.85" overheated after 12 minutes of flight time in 72 degree weather. Buyer beware
Hey Zeb, I haven’t had any issues like that. I know there was an overheating false alarm that was fixed in firmware but I use mine all the time, in hot situations, never had an issue.
Mine = brand new with current firmware
From my experience and others I know with it, not the norm. I would contact DJI right away or exchange it.
Sure - but that's not we are talking about here, most people aren't going that route. Thanks for watching!
You don't have to root a device to install apps. This isn't apple. it's android..
If you want to, knock yourself out, but on the CrystalSky it isn't just straightforward for most
Way to expensive my iPhone is good enough. Ok for you who get them for free to review.
Paul Craddock I love people assuming we get stuff from DJI for free to review. Not at all, I bought both of them to see which or if either of them were a good option and I kept the 7.85” because it was a huge improvement over the iPhone and the tablet I was using.
No worries still wouldn't pay £600 for a monitor but thanks for review.
Beats me.
Not worth the switch
Thanks for the review. Very usefull but you forgot two things to mention:
1. the 7.85 comes with two batteries and the 5.5 with just one (worth about € 70,-)
2. IMPORTANT : for charging the batteries Mavic Pro users will have to buy a Phantom or Inspire charger because the Mavic charger is not capable of charging the batteries
My advice for Mavic Pro users who want to use a Crystalsky monitor: go to Thor's Drone World for the perfect mount !
* the internal battery is charged by the external battery
ImmoPhoto, did you watch the video? at 8.24 he states 5.5 1 battery and 7.85 2 batteries. Skimming videos to promote TDW?
Seems I missed that part ... anyway it kept you busy watching the video to make your point. did it make you feel good ?
ImmoPhoto troll on man
Whahaha... who's the troll ... ? Probably had a bad childhood... Skimming reactions to make pointless arguments...
Nope Flying using Android is asking for a disaster. It's like DJI gave Android the back seat.
You go get some tools!!! Wtf
