As always, your reviews are interesting, instructive and well made. Thank you very much.
As always I really enjoy your honesty with all your reviews. Thank you so much for sharing
Good morning BNH I just watched your video as a commercial it was nice to see the faces that I’ve been talking to for the last several years keep up the good work and have a good day and be safe
Sure would like some freewell gear! Looks great. You are the best when it comes to explaining without too much verbosity. Thanks!
I fell in love with all your awesome reviews but especially for DJI . Now you are just blowing me away with the freewell gear. They have so many cool accessories that work well with DJI. I want one of everything. And the crystal Sky, which I thought was just a glorified monitor? Well, you just showed me that despite the cost it has so many great features aside from the brightness. You are just a mega source of awesomeness-Super Velcro!
Hi Cap! I learn something new every time I watch your videos, Thank you for your informative and detailed demonstrations!
The ball in the basket was hilarious.
The info on the IMU was priceless!
Thank you Captain.
For me,as a beginning drone flyer,this was
very informative
Wow if only I lived closer I would be set freewell to win some great gear from a great guy who has a great channel. Keep em coming my friend. Cheers
I’ve heard lots of folks talk about this, but you are the first person I’ve seen actually review one! Nice!
What are you using Brendan?
I use an iPAD Mini. It works great!
Great review. Love the content. Keep up the good work.
Some more useful freewell gear. A very useful video, thanks
Steve great review. Love your ingenuity with the Velcro. I've got a Note 8 as well but use my iPad Mini 4 for my monitor as I prefer the bigger screen. I may check the 7 inch one out. Thanks again !
Great way to connect large tablet to controller also. Thanks for the info!
Excellent gear from Freewell! Nice view from that park!
Very informative video. Thanks. And the magic words are freewell and gear
The velcro attachment is a great idea!
Nice 'trick'! Thanks! I have Crystal Sky...Really nice monitor. And I've installed Litchi in it too!
Hey Capt. thanks for those tips. I just plugged in my P4P charging cable to the Crystal Sky. And the snap lock Velcro, Genius. Thanks again :"-)
I'm already using Freewell gear and I love it!
Very fine and good ideas VELCRO!😉✌🇵🇹
Hi Captain Drone great video. I would love to have some great freewell gear! Keep up the great work and great channel!
Thanks very good video I've been wanting to get a Crystal Sky is has help a lot and the freewell gear looks great. Thanks Again
What are you currently using?
The freewell gear case quality looks great.
Keep up the good work captain
I have a crystalsky 5.5 and love it. But I bought the companion metal cs holder and just hate it. Your Velcro idea is outstanding and so easy and sensible. It's so much nicer to have the controller and the cs on the same plain. Just a great fix to my otheise mounting agrivation. Great idea!!!
When you bought the autel and it has a screen built in. It feels pretty good I must say
Love freewell gear. Love the crystalsky.
I have the 7.85” ultra bright CS and I love it for flying my Inspire 2 when it’s very sunny out. The 2000 nits is great for seeing where I am during my flights.
I would love the Freewell case for my gear!!
Nice screen brightness and good quality, might be my next purchase, Regards.
Farewell gear great video keep up the great work
Very nice review Steve! Thanks for delving further into the features of the CS, never knew they had them so NOW you have me thinking if it's worth the purchase?? The Freewell case for the CrystalSky is very nice and looks to protect the unit very well. I own other #Freewellgear for my Mavic Pro, they produce very good quality products at a fair price. Some of the gear I own is their hard case and 4K filter sets. Again, very nice review and thanks for showing the other functions within the #CrystalSky!
Does Freewell Gear make accessories for the DJI Crystal Sky? Good review.
capitan Drone, I would like to ask you a question: in your opinion and if you have experience, can you use crystal sky as a monitor for autel evo? if yes, could you explain to me how to load the app and use it?
Thank you for your attention and possible answering
Love my Freewell ND set! Great video man.
Thank you!
How long have you had it?
Very good. You opened my eyes to things I had not seen before. They are expensive but maybe worth is considering what you just showed us. I'm still going to wait for the roamers Mavic remote with the built in screen.
built in remote just mean that screen is lock to a single drone....a crystalsky would work on your mavic pro, mavic pro 2 , mavic air, phantom 5....ect
Great video. Freewell gears are nice!
Good review! Definitely helpful, thinking about upgrading my cell. Didn't know the S8 has 1200 nits.
Very well done review...thanks
How do you screen record ?! Or do you have to download a screen recorder ?!
Is it possible to move the pics or videos to an iPad very easily? Sometimes I like to show my buddies on Zoom via screen sharing stuff.. etc.
Just a note for anyone about the Velcro he used. It can be found in large rolls or small strips at home Depot. It is 3m dual lock. It is great stuff and very strong. I use it for many things.
I have the 7 in model of the Crystal Sky and I love it I also don't have to worry about my phone's battery draining while I fly three or four Phantom batteries
Very cool piece of kit methinks.
I enjoy your videos very much, & thanks for educating us with your keen drone knowledge. Having never flown a drone before, I am now considering my very 1st drone purchase; (possibly a DJI Mavic 2 Zoom, with a DJI Crystal Sky).
I have few questions:
1.) Are you able to connect a Mophie (or a a portable USB battery pack) to either the Crystal Sky & or the Controller? * Monitoring the battery life of (3) different devices without an electrical power backup in the field is concerning. (Drone + Controller + Crystal Sky)
2.) If I need to purchase a new drone battery in the distant future, can I rely on DJI to having them in stock, especially if my drone is an older model? (Often times, tech companies will discontinue supporting older products). I plan on keeping this drone for a very long time in order to justify the high purchase price.
3.) Can I rely on DJI & other drone manufacturers to support the software of older drone models? * Same technological obsolescence concern as in question # 2. I want to maintain my drone investment for a very long time.
4.) Can I disable my cell phone to NOT receive phone calls while I am using it to navigate my drone with the controller?
* A scary situation to receive a call or a text on your cell phone when you using it to navigate your drone.
Thanks in advance for your helpful insight.
I just got a spark and I use just a cell phone but I have absolutely no storage do you think having the crystal sky would be a better option or just getting like some tablet for it I like the crystal sky but just wanted some second opinions on it before I would go get it lol second does it have a mic in it like you know when you have cache videos from the phone and it can use your phone to record what your saying I was wondering if it has a microphone to do that too lol
Btw that Freewell gear you have fits great.
I need me some freewell gear. Wooohooo Capt. Drone owns the drone Universe!
Bossing it Louie
I want to get one is it worth the money FOR 5.5 OR THE 7.8
What is the best app to fly my shoX recon drone
I love my DJI Crystalsky monitor. I use mine for business, I have my FAA part 107. I plug a HDMI cable into it and run the cable to another monitor for clients to see what I'm filming. Also gives the client input on what shots they my want me to get.
Interesting video cause being a left arm amputee I’ve made special attachments for my controller, phone and tablet to a camera tripod. I’ve looked at the Crystal Sky but figured it was money well spent somewhere else. But FREEWELL GEAR does make some great accessories for it and definitely ordering the Mavic 2 controller to tablet hold from Freewell. But the idea of being able to copy between SD cards might be the reason I needed to go ahead with the purchase. In all honesty it does have a great picture so as always Steve thank you for your time on a amazing video.
I might blame it on you when my wife ask why I needed it. LOL
Just kidding I’m the only one to blame.
I have really liked the Crystal Skys look
But for me the Mavic Air was a big splash to make for me. So I couldn't do the Crystal Sky
But all the Freewell Gear you're showing is really nice!
I bought the 2000 NIT 7.85” Ultra. Brightness is amazing.
Nice freewell gear and video
Velcro very cool. Crystal sky doesn't get in way of controls??
Looks great. I think this is what new Mavic 2 controller will look like. Thanks 🙏
That would be an expensive controller.... but a nice one.
Great video as always. I have a question on the HDMI port. I’m assuming that’s an output and if so can I connect a set of fatshark dom v3’s?
I have never tried that, but I am 99.9% certain it would work.
Thx Cpt. was looking in to this. Of course .. why didn't I look here first lol
Thanks. Look great, I want one now lol :)
Hi Captain ,great vid , did the video files and pictures on the sd cards go to them directly from the drone as you were filming or do you have to transfer them from the drone cache . Regards John .
The video goes direct to the micro SD in the Drone itself. If you like you can use the Crystal Sky to cache video that you see (just like you do on a phone or tablet).
For those on the fence...I have the CS Ultra. Well worth it. Like others I've tried many other options. Nothing else that I've tried compares to the CS. It also makes an excellent monitor for viewing your recorded footage.
It's heavy. After a few batteries with your arms in a stationary curl position, you will feel the burn.
So, I have the Mavmount CS tripod adapter $29.
On a tripod, the CSU is at eye level. I never have to look Down at the monitor. I have to support ONLY the Mavic Pro controller, which is light weight.
This combination is a set up I recommend.
We spend a good amount of money on this hobby. Go the distance. Get a CS monitor. I recommend the Ultra model
frewell
"freewell"
Loved the Velcro!
We all need a bit of Velcro. Timeless.
Youre funny when you review love the vidz.
Good video. Got me to looking what my phone has as I can't see it in sunlight at all. One site rated it as poor (287 nits). So, time to upgrade. Besides, it's 4 years old.
Hi really great video - Subscribed and watch all your vids thanks. Just bought a ChrystalSky really great product excellent display....
Thanks David and welcome to the channel!
Great video! Do the current Crystalskys have a glossy screen as you showed? Or do they now have matte screens?
Mine screen might look glossy on the video, but it is actually more matt.
Hey, great video, how has been so far with the Cristal sky for you after almost a year? Is it compatible with other apps? 5.5 inches screen is enough large to compose video an photos? Was the cost vs benefits ok so far? Thanks a lot!
If you only own one DJI drone, then the Crystal Sky is not for you. If you own many DJI drones then it is the best thing ever!
Excellent review...
Thank you!
Great video. Pls consider making a video for bigger screen Crystal sky with 2000 nit screen. Thanks
Great video
Thanks
I want the DJi condence to worl with the mavic pro so you as a consumer can have the option to swtich from phantom 4 pr0 and dji inspire 1 or 2
The Mavic mount DJI sells works really well with the Crystalsky, however you must modify the handles on the controller using a Dremel for it to fit (not a big deal). It was originally made for the first Mavic Pro. With that there are no cables at all because it has it's own USB connector and it feels comfortable in the hands. Also the batteries last 7 hours so if you want to use the monitor to play movies or music from your SD card you can do that. I used it on an airplane to watch movies I downloaded using headphones. Once you buy this monitor you will never have to purchase another for your DJI products. I use it for my Osmo too!
I have been looking for an alternative to a cellphone as a drone monitor. This is the ideal item... however very expensive... I wonder if there is any alternative?
Gorilla Man Unfortunately a display for a DJI product needs to run the DJI GO 4 App, so there is not much out on the market other than cell phones with advanced displays.
So the CS has or doesn’t have GPS to get maps? At 2:22 you say the CS has GPS. Confused on the review on your vid about buy or not by the new smart remote where I think you state they do not have GPS? Thanks!
Hi Don. The Crystal Sky has GPS, WiFi, Speaker, Mic like a phone does. If you take your home tablet (whatever brand it may be) and go stand out in the forest or field you will get no maps unless the maps have been cached. Both the Crystal Sky and Smart Controller are identical in this regard.
Nice review. The only aspect I might consider is the multiple SD cards. I do a lot of sports shooting and guys are wanting to buy my shots or video clips. This makes it so simple but is it worth the price tag?? Currently, I copy to my iPhone then send it via wi-fi to the person. The new cell phones in 2020 anti-quate the crystal sky, I think.n Inconvenience seems to always drive home the $$ price point.
Hey, were you able to find out why the LUT viewer isn’t working on the clear scan while flying Mavic 2 Pro?
Juan, I never really used it so I never noticed it was not there within the Crystalsky. I'll check again next time I'm out with the Mavic 2 Pro.
How well does it fit in your hands with it connected via Velcro? Seems like you could mount it to a blade of aluminum that fits into the controller and it might sit better in your hands. I am still trying to decide if I want this or an iPad Mini 4
With Velcro, It sits in a way that is very normal and fits in the hands (at least mine) they way I'd expect it to. In several videos after this one you can see it in my hands when flying DJI drones and it looks/feels very natural.
I've seen how the open triangle areas of the MavMount fit your fingers perfectly and it locks the base into place. Plus, how can they sell the Crystal Sky with no cable? You would think they would make the batteries the same as the Mavic Air or something. That way I can charge it on the 4 slot docking station. Unbelievable...
If I have a Samsung S8 phone that displays at 1020 nitts would I even need a 5.5 crystal sky?
That's what I thought, but now that I have the Crystal Sky, I no longer use my phone.
Hi, great review thank you. 1 question that I'd appreciate your help with. Can I record the telemetry from the dji?
When I make my video from the actual camera, sometimes I'd like to embed in the bottom left, the video that's on my phone. Ie have the great 4k footage and embedded the screen from the crystalsky.
Thank you,
The same info that is normally recorded to your phone is also recorded to the Crystalsky. The telemetry would be there as well, although I've never looked at it, but all flight details would be there in case you lose your drone.
There is no video screen recorder built into the Crystalsky. You'd have to side load an Android screen recorder app for that.
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Brilliant. Thank you
Thanks for your review. I’m now seriously considering making the investment. I especially like your hack with the velcro. My only question is , do the arms on the remote fold flush???
The velcro, in my demo, is on top of the arms which does not hamper their movement.
Thanks. So do you consider it brighter than your note 8? Also, does your note 8 fit inside the mp2 controller? My IPhone 7 Plus is obviously not very bright because I have trouble in the sunshine.
Outdoors, it is consistently bright (the Crystalsky). The Note 8 is great outdoors, but it takes a very sunny day before it becomes bright. The Note 8, with a case (as per mine), fits in the MP2 controller with no problem.
Thanks; the note 8 is larger and I am considering one just for flying the mavic. I noticed that the note 9 is not as bright as the 8.
Erm, freewell gear?
Doesn’t the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 you use heat up if in full bright mode? I read somewhere that it “cannot be run in full bright continuously,” so I am curious about the performance that you have experienced, or if this is a limitation at all. As always, thanks for the great reviews.
MrPlaneTalk I've never noticed the heat. The Note 8 has been used since September 2017 for hundreds of flights with no issues.
CAPTAIN DRONE Thanks so much for your prompt reply. (I have to say, you are THE BEST on RUclips in replying to inquiries. Thank you!)
Hey, no problem!
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 you also live in canada...
It is possible you dont get heat issues because you are in Canada. We fly in the southern USA and started with a samsung note phone and in hot temps the brightness shuts down on the phone. The glare was so bad had to cancel several shoots. So made the investment for CS. Expensive yes, but works flawless in any condition for us. Also the ability to copy files is huge when in the field filming. Thanks man. Godspeed. JBOTV
Hello, only if you don't mind sharing, can you please tell me your 4k render/export settings you use when uploading to youtube... for some reason my 4k videos run like crap and never want to load fast enough before it stops, yours seems to be loading just fine and never stops...
My settings in any editing software are set for RUclips (when you select RUclips, the settings all become fixed).
Thanks for the video, it's great... a lot of people says I don't like DJI because in my channel I almost only flight Parrot, Anafi, Bebop 2 and Disco, but isn't true, DJI have great drones, expensive but very good... I just start with Parrot Disco and I buy the others devices from Parrot to learn... let's go forward, best regards...
i just bought the Mavic 2 Zoom. Now i need the Freewell gear🤞
Nice review mate; greetings from Seychelles.
Thank you Bernard.
how do i find out the nit value of my phone? i have an oukitel k6 awesome for flying but also use my nvidia shield for the use of my vufine plus.have you tried a vufine plus at all?
You'd have to go online and find the specs.
can i remove the icons/screenbotttons from the crystal when i want to put it in external monitor so i can live stream it using obs?
I have never tried so can't help.
Can you use this monitor for Analog FPV racing?
How about with the new DJI Digital FPV System?
It is not good for FPV
I bought a mavic air and also crystalsky 5.5 monitor at the same time. Why the crystalsky won't work if I connect it from usb RC to crystalsky type-c ? but I tried to RC usb to micro usb of crystalsky and it work? Please I need help. Thank you
If you have a Mavic Air, then you must disconnect the cable that is on the left hand side (the one that you would connect to your phone). The controller only sends a video signal out of one location, so if that cable is plugged in, it sends it there.
My iPad mini 4 seems to lag when I'm in a warm environment, not to mention the dim screen on sunny days. This would be better for these issues mentioned. I think if you Fly a lot, esp in very warm environment and use it for biz, the Crystal sky is the answer, until someone else comes out with one similar but at less cost.
Q: So do you still us the remote sticks to control the drone or you use the monitor screen?
Sticks
Did you say I could win "freewell" "gear"? Thanks for the review!
Just found this review after seeing you use it with your hiking Spark video. It would solve the hassle I have with trying to scrounge devices for our club drones. Will it work with any drone in the Go and Go4 apps?
Exactly. The Crystal Sky is designed to work with the drones that use either app (DJI GO and DJI GO 4).
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 oh good, we have a Phantom 3 and a Spark, and 6 Tellos (but we use those to code). I don't want to have to keep using my phone, or older donated ones that can't run all the apps. Well, time to write another grant!
Great and very informative review - thank you. I do however want to ask a question re the Crystal Sky. This review is now 3 years old and I am wondering what improvements or new features have been added to the CS? It is a very expensive "toy" here in South Africa (I am a hobbyist, not professional) so I have to think long and hard about buying one. Your comments would be most appreciated. Thank you.
No new features. It is very much due for a replacement. However if you only fly the older DJI drones, then it is still good.
I really need to consider getting some freewell gear
Hello Captain Drone, which is better in terms of screen quality? The Note 8 or the 5.5" Crystalsky?
One is a Phone and the other is a Tablet. The Crystalsky is obviously better because it has a sustain brightness. Cell phones can not sustain brightness for a long time due to the cell phone batteries.
@@CAPTAINDRONE798 Thank you :)
We love ours, we have the larger one which with the right mount works great with the M2. You know there are actual mounts for the M2 that would keep you from having to juryrig your controller so much?
Thanks Scott. My controller fits nicely in my case and if I add a DJI mount, it wont. Also if I add a Mav Mount or something like that, then it is one more item to pack that is a touch bulky, so I go the simple route. If I had the 7" monitor, I'd have to go the mount route for sure.
Understood, it is exactly why I don't have one, (my partner loves his though). I just got the Note 9 so I can use that and keep the package relatively small. We have a i2 with a pelican type case that weighs in at 55lbs along with several P4P, mavic Air etc and the M2 is my favorite kit right now for overall performance, size and quality.
