I appreciate Jake giving his overall thoughts on the game right in the beginning of the video, for those of us who don't want to get too in depth and would rather go in relatively blind.
Seems a bit biased tho
@@pempelomoyo8055 Biased in what capacity?
I agree. Enough to temper my expectations without ruining the experience of doing it myself.
As someone who is hyped for the gsme but was realistic im kinda shocked its at 91 on metacritic rn lol
In paticular I like the Polygon review because it's so honest about how their own views left them both sold on and sometimes left them disapo8nted.
@@fedbia2003from the get go he just seems disinterested...
I appreciate the fact that Jake is always giving us not only straight up gameplay, but also gives us his first impressions of the latest games releasing
Or so we've been told 😂
Lol
And he also gives some prooos, some cooons and some personal opinions
buffoon
I appreciate a well-made grilled cheese sandwich.
always love the before you buys because you guys are so real about each game, ive never seen a “7/10 too much water review” (or space in this case)
Imagine if IGN puts a “7/10 Too much space” or starts on a planet with too much water and just not leave the planet complaining about too much water
@@jenoyt1337nah it's 7/10 too many empty planets
I always check the reviews from those who make that sacrifice of buying the game and taking the time to explore it and go through many aspects of the game and show visuals and explaining the games mechanics and NPC's etc.... This takes time I know and gameranx your team is very important and needed and we thank you guys for going above and beyond to make this video and content for "Before You Buy". That's why I never get into the hype of any game that is being hyped up before its release date and or buying the vault edition or the day 1 or preserving game. Another thing I just don't seem to understand and that is why would anyone need to reserve a game when these games are almost 100% digital?
It’s because they get your money early and for some reason people feel like preordering is some ego / culture thing. I really don’t get it. Most people agree preordering is useless in todays time yet stats show more and more do it every year despite the benefits becoming more and more lackluster. No one’s really sure. Most of the defense for pre orders are just “because I wanted to”.
I know this isn’t an answer but I’ve seen a lot of discussions about preordering and it’s usually always the same people saying they’ll never do it and then boom, half of them end up preordering. That and most people who preorder games also aren’t terminally online or discussing with other gamers. They see a game online, or in an ad, and then they preorder and wait the countdown.
@@Pipes7472 yea thats the mental institution that is going on! They forgot you barely get a game that is tangible anymore everything is full digital and they have forgotten that due to the fact that technology has caused soooo many to be blind not use better judgment.
Because there are no standards left in gaming communities anymore. The majority are just a bunch of spoiled low standards jimmies who preorder everything just because like the guy above said boost their fragile "ego"and make them feel somehow relevant at something. People have lost their minds bro.
I only buy physical copies of games, so if someone is like me, and also wants to guarantee to play the game day 1, pre orders are needed for more popular games.
@@ItsMaddenBarss only if its possible to obtain that tangible copy and now days everything is going digital so good luck with that and that kills off pre-ordering
Cool to see them expand on what they made with FO4 with crafting and stuff

Did anyone else notice that you can FINALLY climb over ledges now? Honestly, given it's a Bethesda game, that kind of shocked me.
That's what creation engine 2 does probably😂
Enables ladder climbing
Probably took inspiration from a popular mod that adds animated traversal to Skyrim
But you will still get stuck in them during combat....that's what I've experienced so far
The took a page out of Far Cry's ledge gameplay book
yeah, they added new features.. 10 or 15 fps each...
The ship building as mentioned was one of the better features for me too. I went from pretty much using generic starter ships and one I stole that I upgraded slightly, I jumped from that to investing 4 points into piloting and 4 more points into ship building and transitioned from a beginner ship to one that has over 20,000kg cargo space and still great speed, defense and weapons lol. I made an absolute behemoth.
It did however cost me 690,000 and that's basically why I went from basic to best immediately, as I figured if I just keep upgrading incrementally it would cost a lot more overall and probably closer to a million if I did it step by step, and well... I haven't earned a million credits yet, I spent every credit I had on the ship lol.
shame that apart from storage ship means nothing unless you want to try find dog fights. space itself means nothing just use your map to travel
Big thanks as always for the informative video. Planet exploration aside, it seems to be exactly what i wanted from the game. Can't wait to play it on game pass tomorrow. ❤
Most people who were super stoked for Starfield to be released were mostly just excited that it meant Bethesda would finally start working on the next Elder Scrolls
😂 Bingo! Maybe theyll finally get back to it
Ok Todd you have your silly space game, now go make the one your customers actually want and have been asking for for a decade plus
No, people were just excited for something new
Big facts, hopefully we start seeing trailers next year or the next
@@ktge5050 "Okay, okay. We hear you. We're in the works of re-releasing skyrim for the 18th fucking time."
For everyone who was getting overhyped, this is a good video to level out expectations.
It baffles me that the same people that have played every single game from Bethesda still manage to overhype their games. I don't see how they haven't learned how to manage their expectations.
@@boldone66drones basically. Get hyped for next product, defend shit product, repeat. They believe everything these studios tell them
@@boldone66 Right? Don't get me wrong, I've been a fan of Bethesda games since The Elder Scrolls III, but I know what I am getting into.
I pre installed with gamepass so it won’t cost me a penny
Bethesda pioneered it back in the day so it was easy to overlook things but its sad that they couldnt perfect their formula by now. With that said I definitely didnt expect this to come out as a masterpiece 😂
I knew the exploration was going to be a hang up the minute they said you couldn't just land on a planet or launch directly into space without a loading screen. That was one of the BIGGEST selling points of No Man's Sky. Missing that is a big deal. Also, that bug you showed where one character basically rushed the screen mid conversation and then the camera panned to see the other character all up in your face... was terrifying LOL. It became a horror game for a quick sec.
Why should the selling point of No Man's Sky matter to this game?
@@LuxLoser well this game was purported by many gamers as a “No Man’s Sky killer”, even many NMS players thought the same. It’s mechanics draw more than obvious comparisons, all the way back from the first gameplay footage they released. It clearly draws inspiration from it. I’d call it a blend of NMS and Mass Effect with a Bethesda twist.
@@iLLiCiT_XLplay it for yourself and you’ll quickly see it’s nothing like no man’s sky
@@iLLiCiT_XL And the marketing should have dispelled that. But again, remove that NMS expectation and the game stabds strong on its own merits.
That’s what I love about Elite Dangerous. There are essentially no loading screens and the entire Milky Way galaxy to explore. You jump from system to system, pull up the full spectrum scanner and track the signals each celestial body puts out, then you fly around the star and fly all the way to that glorious 2 biological rocky/icy planet, shoot out your surface scanning probes, locate the fungoida, fly down through the atmosphere and pick your landing spot while hovering over the surface, gently set down your ship and hop into the rover, drive to the mushroom, and get out to scan it.
But once you get there, it’s so boring, you scan the mushrooms and leave, only flora, no fauna. No fights, hardly any space pirates outside the bubble. Which makes sense; no one’s hauling cargo out there.
But that’s buy and large the best way to make money.
I was hoping starfield was going to be a story version of Elite in a sense. Because Elite is a space-sim not a story. It’s just fallout but in space. God damn Bethesda.
I watched this 2 weeks ago and it just occurred to me to comment that, as a long time subscriber, im glad this OG channel is still doing what It started out to do. I gotta say I always really love these videos. If I'm ever on the fence about a game I'll check these out. Really appreciate the honesty and how informative these videos are. I also really like how they never typically outright hate or loathe a game, and even when Jake doesn't like a game he's really nice about it. I think personally I might wait a bit for a sale to get Starfield or maybe sub to gamepass to try it for cheap. I've been underwhelmed with Bethesda since Skyrim and this sounds like more of the same. As always, great video!
Agreed. This video convinced me that I don't need this game.

Thanks for the review Jake! I'll definitely pick it up at some point. Hopefully it gets patched, and they keep improving it! It's a bummer that so many games are having huge worlds that are all too often empty outside the main hubs. Smaller, more full worlds are much better.

Witcher 3, botw, metro exodus are all good examples of great smaller maps with huge detail

I’m not too far in yet but my biggest problem with it has definitely been the space traversal. In No Man’s Sky you could fly right up to a planet and pick literally anywhere you wanted to land. Here you select it with a menu and pick from maybe 3 or 4 spots you can fast travel to :/
You can click on the planet and land on random spots. You click anywhere on land and it makes a spot for you to fast travel to.

The randomly generated planets would be great for mods in the future. It gives space for modders to whatever they like
Thats a good point. I wonder if there is a way for mods to just focus on one planet, so you can download a whole mission set with aesetic mods that only affect one planet.
@@radagast7200It actually would be possible, what would suck is if modders choose the same planet to make their creation so we’d have to choose which one to pick lol
you have heard about the out of bounds on the planets already, right?
My guess is that their entire existence came from Bethesda desire to give more space to modders.
@@Ambilitionthat was my guess as well
Honestly, just a simple first person grav jump animation where it looks like you're traveling through a worm hole to mask the loading when you're travelling through planet instead of whatever they did would make the game much much more immersive.
Fortunately, give or take 2 weeks a mod will probably do that lol
@@skeithG3C shit, knowing the BGS modding community, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually made seamless space travel possible in the near future.

Assassins Creed went that route too. Valhalla was a good game, but the open aspect of it just was "meh". Traveling the world was dull and not interesting. I'd prefer less open world and more linear and do a really good job with that more directional focus.

Thats not an endorsment.
At least he’s honest. It took so long to make. This game is a great example that helps improve how fast games are made. It’d be cool to see more investments in games that actually take 10 years to make. My lord can the budget be hefty but if the gaming industry wants more realistic, yet inherent interactions within a game it would certainly be worth it.
I wish they allowed more opportunities to make things from scratch. Especially with structures. It would be neat to be able to have the ability to customize really small details such as how something is wrapped, where you actually work with the elements of crafting items. Along with having actual opportunities to barter more precisely rather than just collecting mere elements with basic opportunities to sell. Yet in respects to the culture this game comes from its quite magnificent- its really neat how they further integrated previous objective and interface styles within this game- as it allows people who are familiar with Skyrim and Fallout the ability to easily adapt. It’s such a large and prestigious game- which further gives less rights to assume such menial tasks should be incorporated as it could easily cause issues for economic development if not studied through the prospects of sociological development.

I actually like how Bethesda tackled overencumbered here. Instead of locking your move speed to walking only they still gave you the option to sprint in exchange for a faster O2 decrease rate. Which, makes sense imho. since carrying a lot of stuff tire you out faster when exerting more effort
There’s a perk in fallout for that basically did the Same thing made it so you used ap to walk when you were overencombered I always liked it thought it was smart
But it comes fast and the inventory system sucks so hard, looting isn't that fun in this imo.
I mean carry 40 guns (for example) would over-encumber you. At a certain weight you ain't moving. Makes more sense to me. Game play wise it feels the new system is a better system.

If you're planning to start playing Starfield after the June update, you're in for a treat. Most of the bugs I encountered during my initial 40 hours of gameplay at launch have been fixed, and there have been many improvements, including new modes and a vehicle system. The main story is great, but the side quests are where the game truly shines. The various faction missions and the side quests you encounter while exploring different planets are fantastic-it's classic Bethesda at its best. I’ve completed over 100 hours in Starfield and still can't wait to get home and unfold the next side quest, which usually take a decent 2-3 hours. Enjoy!
the story is not great, the story missions themselves are even worse. The NPC's are horrible too. They have no personality. the missions are repeated fetch quests that are never any different from each other. Check map for location of the shard, loading screen to the planet, traverse barren planet, enter the same building, do the same mechannic to activate the building and see the same 5 second cutscene.
it doesn't even give you any information abotut why the powers work the way they do, any lore about them and nothing else other than "use the power" and that's it. The NPC's are not even different from eachother in personality and behavoiur. No emotion on their face at all.
Planet exploration is pointless. the land is barren. No aliens other than some bugs and small dinosour looking herbivours. A couple of pointless recources. 3-4 locations that have no connection to eachother and are the exact same on each planet every single time with the only possible difference being if the enemy faction is one or the other. The caves are the eaxct same with nothing to discover in them.
The same for outposts too.
The towns that you come across are so barebones that there's no point in even going to them unless you want to get a boring "go here fetch that" quest that's the exact same as the main stories quests. There's no effort put anywhere into this game. The ship building is so boring and clunky too. WHy is it so complicated and tediuos to place no parts onto the ship? Why can I not customize the isnide of the ship? Oh wait maybe it's because you dont even need to be in the ship or spend time there because space travel is legit just loading screen after laoding screen and ship battles are the most horribly designed thing in the game with controls and UI so clunky that it could give RedFall a runf or its money.
The only time I enjoyed myself was the one faction side mission where I had to infilitrate that 1 priate group. It was just twice bro stop acting like I pasted it 20 times. You have criticism here fym "haters"
played a few hours and disappointed so far in the immersion/storytelling aspect.
spoilers for the first couple missions:
i picked the dream house and kid stuff traits and imagined my character as picking up this dangerous mining gig to be able to support their family and finance their house. then 20 minutes in my boss is telling me i dont have a job anymore and my only option is to be like yeah okay! bro i got a mortgage to pay i dont care about getting to the bottom of some weird acid trip i had cause i touched a rock. i wish the stakes were higher so i could at least feel like continuing with the main story is something that my character would do. just thought it was weird that they offered these cool traits to shape your character and then immediately put your character in a situation where you have to roleplay against that shaping.
eventually got to the museum and got a run-down of the worldbuilding and i realize it probably feels shallow because i got it told to me through a series of images and voiceovers instead of experiencing it myself, but the game does kind of encourage you to interact with the museum and learn the story through that first as opposed to learning naturally.
also - i haven't met all the companions yet or interacted enough to form a full opinion but so far they feel pretty bland. especially in forms of physical design. i mean, sarah's arguably the main companion and she looks like any other npc in the city. edit: played some more and some of the dialogue is really unnatural. one of the first sarah dialogue options is asking her if she believes in any of the religions. it would make sense if it was tied to you having one of the religion traits or a location or even if you were just asking her about constellations creed - but youre literally just like hi i met you 5 minutes ago do you believe in divine atheism or snake god? :D
probably seems like a silly thing to ruin my experience but a good story and being able to immerse myself in the world and the roleplay of my character is my main priority in single-player games.
that being said, the combat has been fun so far and the world environments are beautiful so im not giving up yet in finding the enjoyment in the game, but it's definitely gotten bumped to the backlog.
Just watching the gameplay gives me nostalgia. Just walking through a city, the NPCs staring at you, the loading screen and random door noise as you're entering a dungeon, It just feels like home. Can't believe it's been so long since we had a Bethesda single player game.

The really first objective impressions on StarField. Thank you.
Glad i kept my expectations in check with this one. I didn't expect Starfield to be the next game changing space sim, but a classic Bethesda RPG with all the pro's and con's that come along with that, except this time it's a space setting, wich seems to be exactly what we're getting.
Edit: been playing for 2 hours now, it’s literally Space Fallout. To me that’s a good thing but know what you’re signing up for
What?^
This is what I thought it would be. I'll still buy it.
I knew it was gonna be hot garbage 😂
To me it fallout but in space so I not thinking this will be to different just u have the power to fly around where ever u like to go
Yup! Just be optimistic
I never have huge expectations anymore. That was definitely shattered with Cyberpunk. I was excited for this one with a healthy bit on skepticism and knowing Bethesda, this seems all par for the course with flaws and all. Appreciate the critical eye. I'll be playing Sea of Stars until early access later today. Great video.
This game seems to be in worst state than Cyberpunk was on release... I wonder if people will react as strongly. I'm not buying this full price for sure, looks like ps3 game in many places.
I have absolute sub-zero expectations when it comes to anything triple A
And I still doubt Starfield is good at all, I don't trust pre-release reviews
wait for it on gamepass..then its 20 bucks...watching this video changed my mind form getting the prenium version to just getting it on gamepass and calling it a day.... already knew they were overhyping this game waaaay too much for what we got

If you like sci-fi and Fallout/Skyrim you’ll love this game. The intro is pretty bland, but just do a few story missions, then go explore. Iv been enjoying it since early release. Unless you’re expectations were unrealistic, I think most Bethesda fans will enjoy this a lot.
A few points:
- shooting is like improved Fallout 4. Felt good to me
- Surprisingly the 3rd person looks/moves great.
- The main quest is MY favorite from Bethesda this far
- You can land on planets even if there isn’t a marker there. You can also dock onto other ships and space stations (thought that was cool)
- plenty clothes and suit options. You can looks like a bounty hunter to looking like a alien stripper.
- you have to unlock mechanics like stealth bar, pickpocketing, combat slide, etc
- planets tend to look mostly barren but you never know with Bethesda
thanks
no. I loved most bethesda games since morrowind. even ones like fallout 4 and fallout 76 i still could have fun with. this one was a chore. i did the quests up to mars including all side quests along the way. took my time explored 10 planets between. the storyline is boring. the exploration is horrible everything is the same or similiar copy pasted elements. buildings only have a few types and you run into ones that are exact copies of some previous ones. alot of threads on steam detailed how other players felt and many seemed to feel the same during the early access period. many of us refunded mine was at 20 hours. before the game completely released and we no longer could. so no if you like fallout skyrim sci fi that does not mean you will love this game.
I am going into this expecting full Bethesda. Most shortcomings should be dealt with through mods. I am holding off on buying it for now. I am planning on upgrading my GPU to the RX7800 XT when it comes out and I suspect AMD will be throwing in a copy of Stafield with the GPU. Once I get it though I'll be looking out for the Unofficial Starfield Patch and a Starfield Script Extender as priorities. I am very excited.

I think one thing I love is that with skyrim for example, it is a buggy mess with or without mods but most of the time it is fun still because the bugs are usually hilarious and entertaining. A lot of modern open world games fail that though and the bugs are frustrating instead. I just hope that the bugs here stay on skyrim level and not cyberpunk 2077 day one level.

This was pretty helpful. I usually go out and explore ignoring a lot of the main story and quests, but I think I will focus more on letting the game guide my exploration through the narrative because that is where the best curated content will be. So, I think you just helped me have a better experience than I may have otherwise.
Same, when F04 came out, I had it at launch and didn’t complete the main story for like 2 months. I ran around exploring and building lol

They could of made it better with actually getting in and out of the ship, Star citizen for example, you press a button and then a door opens. Seems like the type of game you’ll love if you’re a fan of giant, expansive adventuring, but it might not click fully if you prefer more depth or focus. Makes sense.
Uhh, no. It's not giant expansive exploration. No man's sky does that. This game is too gated off in that aspect to reach that kind of height.

One thing that I thought was strange was they give you the watch to function as your menu UI, but you don't look at your watch (like a pipboy) at all. In fact, I bet many people forgot about it.
I also got the inkling that the game is sorta being low-key designed for VR like the other Bethesda games.
Can confirm. Started the game on Monday. Thought the watch seemed kind of simple and cool. Totally forgot it existed lmao
Watching this was super informative, the only parts of Starfield I’ve heard of until now came from TikTok, and it was mostly these accounts praising Xbox and trashing PlayStation, I had no idea what the game was actually like so hearing an actual review of the game was very helpful. i kinda have the idea that many adult gamers have already experienced so much that it takes more and more everytime to from the developers to amaze us, and surprise with something new. At some point that becomes an impossible task. But there is always a young generation that is going to pick up an open world game like this for the first time. If i was myself 15 years ago and played this game i would probably experience it as the best thing ever.
All that us adult gamers want is an immersive interesting world with cool stories to interact with. The second I heard there were going to be lots of randomly generated planets I knew this game would be a let down and yeah it looks boring. I'm not intrested in doing 100 hours of randomly generated dungeons. I'd rather play vampire survivors if were just doing randomly generated combat.
Speak for yourself I guess, being 26 I feel like this is still going to be right up my alley!
Pretty true because where one developers exceeds the rest need to catch up .. a lot of these games fall short , they miss things that other games got right
It's not that. Games have just not processed as they could have. I mean we had Dead Space in 2012 for example and nothing has come close to it in that genre, except for the remake ironically. Yhese developers just aren't trying anymore because they know they don't have to try hard to get people to buy crappy games. It's just sad really. PS2 days were rhe best in gaming history. Oh and Rockstar can we get GTA6 already?!?! GTA5 been out for a DECADE already!!
It’s fascinating seeing the variety of cope on here. Modders will finish the game, DLC and patches are going to sort the game out, if you were a kid you’d like it.
When you were a kid, you were entertained by a plastic toy truck or a funny shaped stick. I mean come on dude, you can’t be this much of a drone
