Same here. Enough games have side quests that are limited to where you are in the story that we've been taught that if you want the items from that quest, you'd better do the mission before you continue the story. Also, there's probably an achievement for completing all the quests so we better do it for the achievement as well.

The most obvious "go this way" in a game for me was in The Evil Within. You see a T intersection with your partner Joseph running from Safeman. When you finally finish the evil kitchen you're in and get to where you saw them, you HAVE to see where they came from. Sure enough, there's ammo and Green Gel just sitting there right before the barricade. One other one is I HAVE to check behind every waterfall even though TLC told me not to.

@gameranxTV actually there exists lava where you actually can walk on. I visited the Etna volcano 2 years ago and the tour guide explained to us that there are different kinds of lava and it depends on the amounts of minerals and elements that are in it. He explained that the lava at Etna is kinda special because the surface of the lava cools down way faster than the lava under the surface. The movement of the lava then actually takes place under the surface. He said when the surface gets cool and hard enough, you can walk on it. But he also said that you absolutely need good and solid shoes for that and they probably still take some little damage from it. The tour guide called it "quicksand lava". Basically as long as you keep moving, the surface of the lava wild hold you up, but if you stay still, the surface would give in. Sadly i didn't got to see it because i missed the last vulcano eruption which happened like about 12-14 hours before i went up there. So i guess it kinda makes somehow sense in videogames to be able to walk a short time over lava 😂

Same here. In games that you've played a long time exploring goes from just finding things to trying to discover glitches that let you see how the devs chose to handle particular tasks or seeing if you can do something that the devs didn't expect you to try. Recently in Sea of Thieves, I did the Pirates Life tall tale and when we got on the back of the Ferry I stayed on the balcony to fish while the rest of my crew continued the tale. I learned that yes, you can fish during the battle portion of the tale and when I got knocked off the ship I found out that the ship was actually stationary and the water texture is what is moving giving the illusion of the ship moving.

So the reason many of us end up doing all the side missions first is because some games basically FORCE you to if you want to actually experience everything. A perfect example: mafia 2. Once you complete the main mission, everything from the chapter you are in is gone forever. You cant get any of those collectibles or experience those side missions and events ever again on that specific playthrough, unless you old an old save or go through chapter select to rewind time. And its not the only game that does this, but its the one i remember the most. And when that sort of thing happens, and you have no idea which type of game it is, if any of the missions you complete will lock away old content or not, you just kinda start doing absolutely everything you can before starting any story missions, just in case.

The number of players that are willing to climb mountains, even if it's tedious, should tell developers that there is real demand for more interesting and more challenging traversal systems.
In most games traversal comes down to pushing the stick in the general direction you want to go. If the developers are feeling fancy they'll include a stamina system that occasionally has you let go of the sprint button. Many games even go in the opposite direction and include auto pilot systems.
If you are making something like an open world game where traversal is the primary mode of interaction you better make sure that it's engaging even without the context of collectables, quests, loot and world.

I've recently started playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag (which is, by turn, also my first AC game) and I'm absolutely in _love_ with the parkour traversal system. Sometimes I'll actually forego the quick travel and go the long way to an objective marker just for the fun of it.
Before I rage quit, that was also my favorite part of Batman Arkham City, just grappling from something, catching air and gliding around the city was an amazing experience ... right up until they put in enemy snipers to shoot you out of the sky and ruined it.

Sure, it could take a few hits, but at least you're not sitting there having to actually fight them. Like I just did a side quest that involves a giant spider boss, and I 1-shot them with Ancient Magic. It was awesome, because with the spider enemies you get this move where you magically shrink them down to the size a normal muggle spider would be and then stomp them with your foot. Another time, I came up against a poacher or Ashwinder boss, and again 1-shot them with Ancient Magic. It's hilarious.

As for the hoarding, I think I've perfected this in Skyrim. My Lakeview Manor house is where I keep *everything* I'm not carrying, and I've taken it to the extreme. All the armors except the one I'm wearing are on display, along with every weapon I've collected. In the basement, I have a row of safes, and I have one for just potions, one for dragon bones and scales, one for ingots and other materials for forging, and one for documents that I've found. The potions and jewels are basically there if I need to sell them to get money, which I'm not in short supply of anyway, but I like knowing that I can if I have to. I did the same thing in Fallout 4 at my main settlement.

It started off as a pile of items I didn't want (after the shopkeepers ran out of money) but picked up anyway in a corner near the entrance... Eventually it became a side goal...to pick up EVERYTHING elsewhere in the world and bring it back to Windhelm and dump it in town. Soon everything was knee deep in discarded items and my computer was practically choking while trying to render all of the extra objects. Watching the NPCs try to move around in it was worth it. I love that money burning scene with Joker, one of best ones.... :-D
Also leveling up thing can be bit of a double edged sword in games that will do level scaling and they overtune it, like Final Fantasy 8, I think, where you would just make game harder for yourself, if you grind.
Also button mashing while running for e came out of bunny hopping in old games, where it either made you go faster or was just thing you did to be harder to hit. Hence why I usually play with it whenever traversing in games where you don't get penalized for it with slowdown on landing or whatever.
Reason why minimap is so useful is just because it made things simpler. Though I definitely was guilty as hell for just rushing through with car, looking at minimap, oh, there is the spot, hit hadbrake bit too late and splash, mission failed because I hit and killed whatever NPC was waiting for me there... bonus points for game if it gives you second to be like, "he will get back up, it's fine" and then give you mission failed. Also sucks for games where you have to keep the car functional and the way you get to the end point is more of landing than driving there and direction is more upside down than wheels down so you can drive for the next part. And also it sucks if height representation on minimap is poor... like how was I supposed to know I will drive off the cliff because objective is lower... but I bet guys on the roof didn't expect to be killed by the car landing on them.
Also one I had from time when breakable objects in games were bit rare, was to just shoot everything to se if it will "break" or have broken model to replace it. That was always great. Soldier of Fortune was also great because you could blast off limbs.... so yeah, wasted a lot of ammo on corpses there too... probably not best thing to put on your CV though. :-D

the thing about lights breaking or not in modern games is because in order to get a better environment, you'd have to bake lightmaps and reflection probes. Raytracing helps in that regard, but before that, all light bouncing and stuff was baked into the game, so shooting a light to turn it off would look absolutely weird when there's still some light bouncing off surfaces. Like, being in a completely dark room with a light you just shot, but still seeing reflections in shiny surfaces as if they were still being lit.
Old games didn't do reflections and lightmaps like those, so having a real-time light going off was a simple matter of disabling the component, or starting a coroutine for a flicker effect.
