    Never quite understand people who play games for hundreds of hours then complain about them being crap. When I encounter a crap game, it generally doesn't hold my attention for very long at all.

    • @Axterix13

      That's because Starfield isn't a crap game. It just also isn't a good game. What it is a pretty mediocre game, with a wide variety of mediocre things inside of it to do, that is just good enough that you can see how this or that aspect could have been great... if the design team had put the effort in or gone in a bit different direction. And sadly, much of it isn't something that a simple mod can fix easily.
      Like exploration needs meaningful rewards. This could happen if this is where you found/unlocked meaningful ship parts, mods for weapons/space suits, found really cool cosmetics, and so on. But instead, you don't store ship parts. They're acquired at set locations, and unlocked at set levels. You don't find special cool mods like the Hornet's Nest through exploration. You craft it or find it on any ol' random gun from anywhere. And the cosmetics can be found anywhere as well, are kinda meh for the most part (whoever thought limiting gear to body & head for the most part was a good idea deserves a verbal berating), as should the person in overall charge of how they look. And so on.

      He didn't really say it was crap. Not everything is awesome or crap. Most things in the world are somewhere in between and so is this game. Also, he plays games as a job, so in order to give a review he has to force himself at times to play something he might not particularly like. And since a lot of his content is dedicated to Bethesda games... it makes sense he'd play Starfield, regardless whether he liked it or not, because a large part of his audience expects it.

    I give you credit for doing 500 hours with this thing. I think you nailed it with this review. The game is not entirely awful. I spent more than 100 hours in it. I finally realized that I was not having fun.
    Even the faction quest lines, which are one of the better part of the game, are not really all that good. The player has very little agency. In one of them you can choose a side but it really is a matter of follow this guys orders or follow that guys orders. I know that agency is usually an illusion in a game (BG3 is one of the few games where agency is real and what you do matters), but Bethesda doesn't even try to provide that illusion.
    I chose to side with the UC and destroy the Crimson fleet. Afterwards, NPCs were still talking about the Crimson fleet taking over. Is it really that hard to code in a flag?

    I think your take on the enemy groups is brilliant - a small AI tweak as you said to make one group more agressive, one using stealth etc is something that could be rolled out in a patch.
    I have noticed though, when boarding ships to take over in space - that Varuun do have some distinct dialogue that is different to other groups,
    Starfield is a roller coaster of a game - brilliant moments, average moments, tedious grind, funny moments and some plain bad things that did not land.
    I am glad that they tried though and I hope that they take the learnings and go forward from there.

    • @brandondanforth8342

      This though. At the end of the day, its an ok game, not offensively bad by and means and not the greatest game ever, and contrary to popular belief, every game that comes out doesn't have to be a revolutionary, genre-redefining, once-in-a-lifetime event, they just need to be fun, which this is (usually)
      I just hope that the influx of negativity doesn't dissuade Bethesda from continuing to try to innovate and doesn't discourage them from taking chances because its that same energy Bethesda had when they made Morrowind, which is what we, the fans, need from them, the willingness to try something beyond the tried and true "cookie-cutter" "Bethesda" game (not saying Starfield doesn't still fall into that, just that you can see they tried to shake things up and took more risks this time than with, say, Skyrim"). We don't need a Morrowind Remastered or a Morrowind II, we need them to go back to their RPG roots that were peak around Daggerfall/Morrowind and combine that with the new technology and blending it with the things that really work from the newer games (Like Fallout 4's exploration or Skyrim's cinematic storytelling, so long as the latter doesn't compromise the integrity of the writing and dialogue).

      @@brandondanforth8342 100% true & i think that's the sense that will stay with the game going forward after the (understandable in many cases) disappointment drops off, & the (completely sad) hate train guys get bored & move on.
      End of the day video games are an industry, a business, & if the real players (silent majority like myself for example, play offline so i'm not even on steam or xbox player counts) keep playing, Bethesda will keep updating & expanding.
      Starfield badly needs "filling out" a bit & of course the power of tweaking one's experience to personal taste through mods cannot be overstated. But really i think it's here to stay & will live on for a long time.

      @JohnDoe-dr9ff 5 месяцев назад +5

      Starfield is at best a 7/10 if you’re being VERY generous. I’d give it about 5/10.
      Skill trees are trash. Building is awful. Fighting in space is just who has the bigger ship. Can’t grow crops. Can only grow plants in hydroponics on the planet you scanned them. Storage is GOD AWFUL. Weapon variety is less than Fallout 4. Very hard difficulty is completely unbalanced and broken - enemies go from being gimp level 1 to Uber gods that can 1 shot you or kill you in less than a second forcing you to abuse phase time.
      No factions. Every companion is a carbon copy of the other. They’re all goody two shoes leaving no room for evil players.
      Skyrim - 500 unique locations on release
      Fallout 4 - 350 unique locations on release
      Starfield - less than 100 unique locations on release
      Load screens…and cutscenes…
      Melee is garbage.
      Unarmed is so bad it shouldn’t even be in the game.
      Ship variety - minimal. Once you hit lvl 57 and can pilot class C, there is little to no variety on ship load outs.
      NPCs are utter trash. They don’t have homes. They don’t sleep. They don’t close their shops (they awake and open 24/7). They’re NOT human…they’re all robots, quite literally NPCs.
      Memory leak - after 2-3 hours of playing Starfield WILL crash on Xbox X. Sometimes it’s at 1 hour, sometimes it might reach 4 hours.
      Skill trees are absolute trash. You have to unlock level in sneak to know how to sneak. 😂 Skill bonuses are pathetically uninteresting, and leveling the skills up is a degree of tediousness to be on par with pulling your own teeth while kicking yourself in the nuts.
      POIs - once you’ve seen one planetary POI, you’ve seen them all as they’re the exact same from planet to planet.
      All in all there’s probably about 50 unique locations in Starfield, and that might actually be on the high side.
      Bethesda made a game. It’s kind of stable…for a couple hours. Every aspect of the game is just…meh. Bethesda made this game to be crap with the intention of modders fixing it for them.
      This game isn’t a AAA title. Its not even AA. Starfield is basically a beta A title game, something I’d expect from a new indie company.

    • @JohnDoe-dr9ff
      @JohnDoe-dr9ff 5 месяцев назад +4

      Skyrim - walk up to shout wall, unlock new power
      Starfield - fly through THIRTY-FIVE space farts to unlock ONE power
      The fact people are defending this game is evidence they are victims of Münchausen syndrome.
      It is a bad game by Bethesda’s standards. It is overly abusive with load screens and cutscenes.
      Its NPCs are garbage.
      Building is worse than Fallout 4.
      AI is just as bad (if not worse) than previous Bethesda titles.
      Less weapon variety than FO4.
      Less armor variety than FO4 (and that game’s armor looked atrocious).
      Less than 50 unique POIs compared to 500 for Skyrim (on released) and 350 for FO4 (on release.
      There is not a single thing that Starfield improved upon from previous Bethesda RPG titles. Nearly everything is worse and indefensible.
      Even the graphics and appearances of NPCs looks like FO4 was just reskinned for space.

You can’t get enough credits to build a decent ship unless you use the command console cheats or spend hundreds of hours farming credits. The amount I spent on ammo was also unreal. Also, whenever I would go to buy ammo for my main gun, most of the shops didn’t sell it! I finally gave in and used the command console cheats and added a bunch of credits and leveled up my player a bit. Now the game is actually fun.

      The writing could have been so much better. I beat all Main quest types in Starfield and afterwards it gets boring fast. The Side missions are very lame and PG like, mostly just running back and forth with no good NPC interactions. Afterwards I just started FO NV and the NPC writing is so much better. Starfield was fun for awhile but it could have been a Masterpiece. Guessing it will get better hopefully.

    For what it's worth. I have a little over 200 hours in the game and am pretty much at the end of the story. I did all 4 factions and most of the side quests. I had fun, did a lot of ship building and weapons modding but not much settlement building. I am getting ready to do my first ng+ and it's gonna suck a little bit to start over, but at the same time I find myself using the same 3 guns, the same one companion, the same armor, and 1 ship so it will be nice to be forced to start over. I plan on doing my faction quests in a different order to use different functions early game than before. Also considering making opposite choices like just being an asshole the whole time and siding with the crimson fleet. Ng+ seems like a way to play the game differently while not starting over super weak. I did this with fallout 4 but I had to mod it to get the same thing. I'm just hoping the vast emptiness of some of the planets will be filled up with each DLC, kind of like maybe people settled and developed other planets through LIST.

      I didn't play FO4 until 2020. Can't imagine how sparse it would have felt at launch. Adding random robot attacks at settlements to the game really makes it more challenging to maintain happy settlements because they cannot fight off robots on their own but they could deal with the occasional group of Raiders on their own.
      Currently, there is no motivation to build and maintain settled outposts in Starfield and they should probably do something about it. Also, building and crafting need to be simplified (the whole periodic table is too much) and you need to be able to break down the junk for crafting materials like in FO4 otherwise it is completely pointless and they shouldn't even let you collect it. I was pretty steamed about 20 hours in when I realized my character had hardly any carrying capacity because they were carrying a hundred pounds of junk that is completely pointless in the game.

    You might have forgotten that Mass Effect tried to hide fast travel by a cool travel “cut scene” - ppl hated it and demand the ability to skip the scene and just wait for the load screen to finish. I bet BGS remembered the lesson.

    • @jackcooper1448
      @jackcooper1448 3 месяца назад +1

      Modern AAA games also hide them by having your player squeeze through a tight hallway, FO4 did it by elevators, No Man's Sky had a little cutscene but it was clearly loading, and it was still more immersive. It can definitely be done. Never ever mistake Bethesda for a company that can learn.

    • @tonyw6451
      @tonyw6451 23 дня назад

      No, their whole concept was fucked. 1 thousand identical tiny maps, that you need to Load screen in between each of them.

  • @The27thS
    @The27thS 4 месяца назад +3

    The loading screens are not for literal loading. They are a masking strategy to cover up the fact that the engine has no way to move character models. They exist purely to prevent an immersion breaking teleportation event for the main character. This is apparent in Neon where you can jetpack to the landing pad without a loading screen but still see one when using the elevator. The landing pad is already loaded. It's just relying on gamers prior expectations to excuse the interruption rather than have a jarring teleportation.

    • @rioplats
      @rioplats 4 месяца назад

      The engine does have ways to move character models - there are moving platforms like cargo elevators around the game, as well as ladders in ship interiors. But yes, a lot of it is entirely arbitrary and a result of poorly considered level design. For example, the elevator shafts don't connect up in the Mast building, so if you went physically up or down you'd just clip out of the building. Same story for the New Atlantis Transit system, which gets around 75% of the way around the city and then just gives up and goes "underground".

  • @bhiei
    @bhiei 5 месяцев назад

    agree with most, for me the fun factor was the ranger quest line, and a few missions early on with some tough enemies, worst aspect was anything with flying, space combat, or puzzles, crafting could have been made more useful in the game, stealth and melee got short shrifted, also for the effort you have to put into the companion quests there's not much reward for it, romance scenes should also have been included mass effect style, why not at this point in game design? and finally at this point in gaming evolution why not be able to tactically manage your companion or put it on automatic depending on playstyle, overall score about 83%

    I think one of the biggest issues exploraton has is actaully the distinct lack of random enocunters on planets or random encounter locations. A lot of problems exploration has would be remedied by having some places be a pre set up set piece with unique characters and maybe traders and such too. Those random locations would keep a fast travel point on them, and would be accessible from there on.
    Random encounters help a ton too as thats one of the reasons i think orbiting works so well. Getting hailed by random ships all the time or having attacks occur is what keeps space fresh despite it being so basic 😊

      It is one of the few games I have actually looked forward to continuing in a long time. Gaming, in general, feels like a chore of late. Doesn't help it has been made political. I thought Cyberpunk was fine and I enjoyed the crap out of it when everyone was bashing it. Now that PL is out, and everyone is raving about the game, I have zero interest in playing Cyberpunk. They changed it so many times it became something else. I have also started a couple dozen playthroughs, have 500 hours in the game and have only finished it once because every time CDPR released a major patch, they completely screwed up my current playthrough. At least I know Todd Howard won't bend over for the mindless groupthink and completely change the game down the line and that is comforting. It makes me willing to invest time in the game, to try multiple playthroughs and try different styles. I want to be a loner space pirate the second time around because I have been the perfect citizen this playthrough. I have had dozens of opportunities for piracy and theft I have ignored and playing it that way would make it an entirely different game. It is unfortunate there isn't a companion, like Cait, who will be ok with you letting out your inner demons. Just massacring all of Goodneighbor was one of the most fun things I did in FO4. But it ruins the place as a trading spot because the two traders will not respawn.

    I can't speak for anyone else, but for me the one thing that sours the experience is that I'm supposed to feel inspired to play NG+, when I find the whole thing pointless. At 178 hrs of playtime, I'm at the last mission of the main storyline with everything else done [side quests, faction quests, companion quests, etc]. I'll have all the achievements minus hitting level 100, but I'll have that too once I do a bit of XP farming. And while I collected the powers, never once did I use them or have any interest in them. So going through multiple cycles of repeat gameplay just to upgrade powers that I'd prefer not even be in the game leaves little to be desired. And I couldn't care less about variations across the multiverse when I already created the universe I most desire in my 1st playthrough. I couldn't give 2 f##ks about seeing Constellation run by children or Sarah being a plant...that's just utter nonsense. Per my take on all videogames, once the credits roll and you've got all the cheevos, the game is DONE,,,I've been gaming since the industry started in the 70s,,,every platform, every genre, every gaming generation,,and rarely have I seen an exception to this rule. I've played all the Bethesada titles, and overridingly enjoy their work, but I'm not getting suckered into squandering 100s of more hours into aimless NG+ pursuits..I almost feel insulted that They think I would want that,,,NOPE! when it's done, It's done...let go and move on to the next title...as I always say, the ONLY reason to ever start a game is to finish it and move on to the next...afterall, there is ALWAYS so many more waiting to be played!!

    The review is pretty good. My only objection is related to the outpost analysis, which I consider it shallow. Probably that's why you haven't got much to complain about. 🙂 Anyway, I have more than 600h spent in this game, with 1/3 of that amount spent in the ship builder mode, gameplay and outposts. During those 200h spent in outpost management, I've encountered A LOT of issues on XSS. IDK, maybe on PC it could work better but, man, the game becomes very laggy with 16/24 outposts! If you build an outpost in the forest, and fill it with greenhouses, due to the high density of trees & greenhouses, instead of 30fps, the game will run at 10 fps! After deleting the big majority of them, and kept only 4 outposts, the game started to move better. As a conclusion, even though you could think that games should be better optimized on consoles, since you only have 2 to worry about, welll ... it's not Starfield's case! The main impression is that it's not optimized on PC either! 🙄

And if I increase linkages to give parallel transports, I use up another slot of which I have VERY little. And each slot goes to another landing pad, which..... takes up a lot of space. Then I have to wait X minutes, and each transport has a measly 200 carry weight.

    One of the more fair reviews of the game I've heard. I was considering the game because I like fallout 4 and was amazed by the graphics, but after seeing this and hearing other reviews I might be giving it a skip. But I like a review that gives me the good and the bad from somebody who has actually given it a fair chance, and is not just complaining about all the negatives without also showing the potential positives. It is disappointing though that the developers didn't make different design decisions and put more effort into the things that actually matter to someone like me, like an interesting and engaging storyline that goes with an immersive realistic world.

We're doing any kind of homework on it or anything like I feel like this video was made just to take the negative side of starfield like you honestly sound like you've taken no time to do any research

    This entire review highlights the problem with gaming - more more more. I am not an 80 hour a week gamer. Most weeks I'm doing good to log a few hours of run and gun with friends online. I subscribed to GamePass earlier this year and started playing No Man's Sky, but I didn't put a ton of serious time into it, per usual, and very much dislike the need to gather and build. When Starfield came out I thought it was going to be more of the same and yeah, those loading screens had me thinking I wouldn't put more than an hour or two in.
    But I was captured by the stories and after almost 1000 hours I'm still only 85% through. The beauty of the game isn't just in the mechanics, but also in the way it moves you from being overwhelmed in the beginning to be emotionally distraught after losing a companion. I've spend time exploring cities and planets, figuring out outposts, building ships, pirating, fixing all of Neon's problems. I've had companions and shunned their company and had them ripped from me in an alternate universe. Each playthrough has been different, has hit me different. Each time I've found a new way to accomplish a mission - faster, stealthier - or found a new bobble or way to use the powers I've collected.
    I suppose if you are a hardcore gamer or this is your only hobby, I can see how this game might feel like a let down. I have friends that never bothered with NG+ because there are other games to play. But some of us love the game, despite the places it could improve. I'd love to see the marriage of flight and planetarty mechanics of No Man's Sky or the seamless space navigation of Eve Online incorporated instead of a loading screen. Less diaglog would definitely me more in Barrett's case! But I love the environments and the stories and the impact I have on them in this game.

      Is not a bad game, all the contrary, is a great game, i have played 40 hs and i have a personal rule, in most big RPG i play as max 100 hs. Starfield feels sparse and disconnected.
      No Man's Sky feels seemless but focuses too much on the building and grinding of resources, i would love a seemless universe but with interesting sidequests, even if it needs to be a somewhat smaller universe, like let's say 100 planets or 10, as long as all quests are organically placed.
      Both are great games but they're what they're.
      For great ambience and supreme level design we have Darksouls. For fun exploration and fun quests we have Starfield, and for discovery and seemless universes we have No Man's Sky, but no game does everything.

    I agree on certain points like underperforming ship-combat, bad companion design and some unnessecary skills (i think the skills are good in general tho), but i disagree with other things.
    Here are my thoughts to some things you've said:
    I think there could be improvement on the dialogs as well, altough i think they are overall fine. I can understand when people say they don't want to listen to everyone in the game which is fine. But i wouldn't say the dialogs are bad just because of that.
    The Gunplay feels pretty nice, but i think there should be a LOT more weapons. Also there is no optical customization yet which honestly sucks. The customization functionality-wise feels kinda good, but also i think there should be more options. Overall this one is fine tho.
    For me it feels way more real, that the planets are somewhat "empty". That's how they should look like to me at least.
    The few structures here and there feels just about right and i think the rewards are pretty balanced in there as well.
    Of course there can't be 100+ different structures, the game would crack the 200 Gb mark reaaal quick (and the loading screens would get really slow).
    The spaceship customization is one of the best aspects in the game in my oppinion. The fact that you can customize every single ship (both design AND efficiency in terms of placement and weight reduction) makes it so unique to me. It's not only about appearance.
    To give an example: I was in midgame, low on credits and had 3 or 4 ships already. Then i had to fly to a star but none of my ships could reach in terms of "grav-power".
    I had to strategize with my credits, removing unneeded parts but still keeping the structure to insert a better grav-engine. (Sadly weight doesn't affect the jump range which honestly sucks hard, that would be a really nice feature)
    For me, the story was the charm. Yes, there are boring parts (subjectively!!!) but especially the U.C. questline really got me. Every single dialog was interesting and the choices felt heavy, sometimes made me pause and think for a few minutes to choose wisely. The questlines really gave me oblivion vibes there, got sucked into the world here and there, living the moment for a few minutes or even hours. It took over a day for me to complete the U.C. vs. Crimson Fleet quest and it was the single best quest in any game i've played so far.
    The main quest was overall decent until the point of no return where you get to decide if you want to get reborn. I accepted and immediately was blown away by the fact that you can fly these monstreous, gorgeous, majestic silver alienships. I literally forgot my losses of several weapons and armor in less than a second and i accepted this really fair trade to become a higher form of life. Crazy!
    Overall, i would give this game a solid 6.95/10, agreeing that there is still a lot to improve.
    It's a decend game guys!

    I loved it. There’s nobody offering what Bethesda offers-a true open-world sandbox with fairly deep RPG elements. Nobody else has built anything close to SF or Skyrim, much less FO4. Given that, they get slack, as they’re giving us a risky product, with no substitute.
    Not perfect, but ambitious and I’d rather play it in this B+-grade of content, wait for software updates and mods than wait for another 2-3 years before it’s released in a perfect state. And really, public companies don’t operate that way anyway. So keep up the support if you want more.
    As a dev myself, in R&D, let me tell you-it won’t get better than this in 2023. They’ve filled our offices with free riders and technically incompetent quota-filler/PR-marketability managers, so we’re lucky to produce anything at all anymore. The fact, that they can produce a fun, complex, working game when 50% of their developers do 90% of the work…bravo.

    I think my biggest problem with the game is just a straight up lack of imagination. It's like they forgot how to write the plot of a compelling or interesting side quest. Or they couldn't come up with a decent likeable companion. And then after the 4th custom made location they just said "fuck it", let the computer do the rest.
    They straight up broke Chekhovs Gun rule by talking about mech warfare (something they had to know everyone would fuckin love to see) and then didn't bother giving us at least one mission with em. Either so much was cut that we were left with just bare bones or whoever directed this travesty should be demoted. Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle really is the perfect description.

    Overall, imo, Starfield is pretty hollow. I really tend to take my time playing rpgs'particularly in the beginning. The first 40 or so hours of the game were very fun. Then, the fun fell off a cliff. I realized I had seen every type of cave, planet, hideout, loot rate, top gear, etc.
    So, I then basically sped-run the main story and faction questlines,
    -(i found the characters' dialogue in this game extremely annoying for some reason which only made it harder to be interested in characters)
    -flew to every Star system and then dropped the game.
    I blame myself expecting a Fallout4/Oblivion hybrid in space. I don't have many nice things to say about it. Great achievement in scale,, i suppose, sort of? But that's not a selling point for me.
    In hindsight, I wish I had just bought Game Pass ult for 1 month@ $17 instead of pre-ordering it because I was completely done and uninterested after two-three weeks.
    For me, the replayability, which is important to me as I don't play many different games these days, is very low.
    The ship building WAS stimulating for me. That's rEaLLy about it.. Though, you can't really even do much with your ship. -sort of just admire it and move on to another build idea. Aaand its real expensive to build ships..
    Hopefully mod support will be AWESOME. If not; oh well.

    My issue with outpost building is….why do it? In FO4 I played without fast traveling and created a resource hub outpost that all my other settlements connected to and as I walked the wasteland I stopped at my settlements to drop off supplies and I’d see new faces and upgraded the settlement accordingly. As I traveled I’d encounter my caravans fighting enemies and help them out.
    In Starfield I can create outposts to get resources to…..make more outposts. Money was never an issue and neither was resources.
    The aesthetic, atmosphere, music, and environments are S tier for me, but it feels like a bunch of good things that just don’t compliment each other. Largely in part because of the travel system, but because of the currency/resource system as well.i truly hope make drastic enough changes to bring back the feel of wandering and dealing with what you encounter along the way like their previous games. I need reasons to stay on planets for extended periods of times.
