What do you guys think about the Tekken battle pass? Also quick update now that the battle pass is out, apparently the vast majority of the items are reused from tekken 7, so they are literally reselling tekken 7 content in the battle pass.

A game that is supposed to be sustained and supported with content for like a decade afterwards needs money for that... On top of that consider tournaments... Prize money, venues, and people trying to make a living from it
Out of all the micro transaction forms the battle pass has been the most sustainable one... Just look at how it skyrocketed mobas into the most lucrative esport in the world
And u know the best part about the battle pass is... If u don't want to buy it u don't have to... All it's offering is cosmetics, fluffy unnecessary to the core game... If they can earn their money from people willing to spend it then imagine we can get the shit that actually matters for free like free DLC characters and stages

Leaving out a staple legacy character that has been in Tekken since 1998 to sell a battle-pass effects gameplay, it effects the community and makes people feel a way about it. One of their youtube shorts is literally a bunch of light drones in the shape of Kazuya and Jin about to punch each other and then it turns into "Tekken 8 out now" not only that but there's the gold edition that needs you to pay 100 dollars so 10 people paying that edition is 1000 dollars so, Tekken is gonna b fine and the battle pass and the microtransactions needs to fuck off. People will tolerate stuff they don't like if the game is good. Tekken 8 for the most part is a well designed fighting game. So the average person won't care about the microtransactions. In addition to all the points you made.
"You don't have to buy it just ignore it"
The existence of the BP alone evidently hinders the quality of the full price game itself to those who do not want to buy the battle pass:
#1 They clearly held back on the customisation to save things for the BP. A lot of the stuff we see was freely given in t7. Steve doesn't have an option for boxing gloves...You can't mix the upper and lower parts of default costumes. Etc.
    2. They prioritise leeching money which harms the game. People have been asking why there's no real repercussions for pluggers and cheaters (who even stream publicly). Why the disconnect ratio doesn't work. Why Polaris engine crashes mainly on AMD cards. Why reporting is VIA TWITTER (??) and so on. Radio silence/lies saying they're working on it or have done something. But when it comes to their battle pass, they immediately go out for people who display mods with ease...So you can see they prioritise leeching money over the health of the game.
These are just SOME examples of issues that would likely have been avoided / resolved had there been no inclusion or existence of the battle pass which actively affects the entire player base even if they "just don't buy it".
Also btw modders have had 0 warnings or a concrete statement on the company's standing on mods. They were fine with it in t7. Then they suddenly ban ppl in t8 with NO WARNING.
Mind you that's also just a passionate community for your game with client side cosmetics that you're able to crackdown on and not the cheating / plugging streamers and whatever.
Edit: ALSO all those deluxe additions, season passes and $100 bundles just for it to include ZERO mtx currency is insane. You're telling me someone who spent $100 is expected to spend even more on mtx and not have a bunch included in the bundle at least?

Honestly I liked the idea of being able to get loot boxes for free in games, and not the battle pass motto.
    Hear me out on this.
With loot boxes, you at least know the stuff inside it is going to be in the game forever and there's no time limit to get them except for a few exceptions(Destiny 2), but with games like Overwatch, Black Ops 3 and stuff like that, you at least know the shit will stay in the game and even if you don't get it there's no stress in playing constantly if you get burnt out.
With battle passes, it EXPECTS you to drop everything and play constantly to work through every rank to get every single piece of loot. Run out of time, you lose it and you'll never ever get the chance again. Even if you feel burnt out, you still have to drag yourself to play the game to earn everything to not miss out. Turning the game from a game to a job.
And if you slack off, all that stuff would be taken away. It makes me not want to get Tekken 8 now because of this bullshit. I hate battle passes in games. I understand the practice in free games. Not 70 dollar titles.

  • @genuwine21

I think the argument about the pricing and other monetization are two different issues that stem from the same place. Games are too expensive to make now, production costs have ballooned and the expectation of what you get for $70 is rather high. Oddly videogames haven't gone up much given that the cost to make them has, I got into buying games on the playstation and I can remember distinctly games being $50 on the PS2. That is only a $20 increase and there were games priced much steeper than $50 supposedly on the N64 from what I have read elsewhere. I have come to accept that DLC like character passes are largely just the modern version of expansion packs which was a business model that allowed for continuing to tap into the same player base that purchased the original product. Personally I wish things could just be purchasable if they are going to include microtransactions rather than having battle passes or loot boxes. I also wouldn't mind a reduction in production values to save on cost which could allow for games to be made quicker but I don't think the industry can head in that direction. Instead solutions like AI generated assets are the solution a lot of industries are looking at to reduce cost. The other alternative would be a subscription model, maybe where you buy the game at a reduced price and pay monthly for online or some access to specific features and bonuses but I don't know if that would go over well. While I understand the logic of saying Bandai doesn't need to make any additional profit, unfortunately publicly traded companies need to show increased profits every year. So rather than greenlight a different game they make a fighting game and choose to add these additional sources of on going revenue otherwise they would be better off jumping to a different product where they can continue to make money. I think all big budget fighting games have become the live service model because it is a way to justify the production of such a niche product over making some other AAA game that is a more "safe" choice.

I was gonna buy this game on sale but then they started started adding the microtransactions and it really demotivated me. There are f2p games without battlepasses that give you more value and content. On top of Bamco being super greedy there is still the problem with pluggers. The rankeds are broken and people literally abuse that fact to NOT lose points after losing. A so called AAA game having such a gamebreaking bug in the game for over THREE MONTHS (it was also a thing in T7 according to many players) is ridiculous. They want to sell characters, Vbucks and Fortnite battle passes inside a quite expensive already game while they can't even deliver a polished product. All the game needs is having a risk of being permabanned for no reason and no customer support and we have another Overwatch 2 but at least Overwatch 2 is now free to play so that's actually even worse. And as you said there's too many people who are EVEN OKAY with this because "it's just skins and you don't have to buy it" - that's how games are becoming worse. Blizzard is the best example of this. The developers can simply NOT try if they realise the players are okay with getting fucked with microtransactions.

Another issue I have with the battlepass is how bare it is. There's like maybe 3 or 4 things I would kinda want but it doesn't justify getting it at all. If you pay for the premium you get a bunch of stuff that you'll just pretty much never use. Like for example I will most likely never touch Azucena, Leroy, and Shaheen, so I don't care for those character art panels like at least give us a custom illustration for every character or maybe some of our own choosing. Not to mention the nearly worthless tekken ball skins, the titles/title plates, and avatar customizations. If bandai namco is gonna be scummy with their practices at least make it kind of worth it? I honestly don't understand it. At least the tekken shop has stuff people would maybe want like legacy skins but even charging for those is super scummy.

Ignoring the obvious 10+ years of dlc characters being a.) horribly balanced b.) horribly implemented designs/visuals or usually c.) both!, it just immediately takes me out of being invested. Like smash gets away with it cause it's their entire design, but it sucks to have a game take itself semi-seriously, have a neat atmosphere that gets me more hyped than most other games, and then I see a waxy ass gollum and The Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz looking crossbreed of Sheldon From The Big Bang Theory! or some shit that they released season 2 or some shit so the die hard and/or competitive players are already rooted in deep.
God, I'm tired of shareholders sticking their shit covered fingers into the puppeteered husks of whatever Creative Director or what have you. Even indie games are falling to this stuff at this point. I don't want to sail the digital seas but it looks like that might be my future out of protest lmfao.

Dude don't be stupid. The inclusion of a battle pass is fine as long as the base game offers enough content, and it does. For 60/70 $ it is totally worth it, it's a complete game.
The battle pass can actually be an incentive to play. in tekken 7 there was nothing to incentivize me to play after a couple of months. I would win games and I'd get shit for it.
The battle pass gives me a reward for playing, winning and pushing forward.
THE PROBLEM IS THE CONTENT IN THE BATTLE PASS SI GARBAGE, but even so it's better than nothing ...

no is not, it costs 10 dollars, and only gives you 6 back for a next battle pass, also expires and unless you dont have a life you will miss rewards, unless you pay more, is a shit system designed to get more money out of the player using FOMO, is fine in free to play games but not in 70 buck games

I'm 45yo and an old school player. I used to play Street Fighter 1 on my childhood. Because of this game as a service trend that I don't support for full priced games. Fighting games are dead for me right now.
At least until they finish their productive cycle and then sell the complete game with DLCs/Seasons for a fraction of the price.
I'm sick of greedy companies, but not as much as current players that support modern monetary system.
It's ok if you don't agree with me. But If you feel like commenting against it, please include your age.

We need regulation that mandates game companies have to reveal if they plan to add monetization post launch of a paid game. They've proven NONE of them can be trusted without any policing.

"Capitalist move" - bro we live in a capitalist society. Every move a business does is a capitalist move.
"Artificial scarcity in its purest form" - Artificial scarcity means that the producer is intentionally not making enough goods to meet the demand to keep prices high. I don't know if this applies to timed battle passes. There is a great supply of the goods (cosmetics) that you can just pay for. I think he's trying to make the time the limited resource???
"Microtransactions isn't okay because tekken 8 is not free." - He then admits that the base game is a great product in and of itself but is now mad because there's new shit that isn't free???
"$70 game shouldn't have virtual currency with real money because it isn't fortnite or LoL" ????
"Fear of missing out", "Think of the children" - This has always existed with regular stuff like clothes. Nike has been doing limited editions for basketball shoes. The latest signatures; Lebrons, jordans, kobes; have instilled FOM in kids and they have been pressured to wear the latest style and have been bullied for it. But like most of us, we survived high school without getting the latest and greatest stuff. It's not the end of the world.
"We played $70 for a game that has limited customization compared to tekken 7." - Do you have a source or numbers on that compared to when tekken 7 launched? Also, again, you paid $70 because you deemed it a good value and subsequently gave it rave reviews BEFORE the extra cosmetics were revealed. Why does having extra COSMETICS change this???
"If it was a free game, it would be a different story." - what happened to think of the children argument earlier lmao. It's fine for kids to get bullied as long as the base game is free???
You would need a source if they actually don't need the funding. Otherwise it's just pure speculation.

They are always moving the goal post, with how greedy the Publisher gets. In this case Bandai Namco.
We were told before, that selling character passes is whats keeps the game alive. Which for me was fair enough. They would release a season pass with 4-5 characters for 29.99$, that also included new stages and costumes.
Plus you could always buy it later at a decent discount.
They made so much money on Tekken 7 and it's DLC. But now that the new game is selling better and faster than the previous one. They are suddenly out of cash to support it.
And thanks to the Online Shop and Battle Pass, you will never be able to buy a complete edition of the game. I usually buy a fighting game a year or two down the line, when it's at least 50% off on sale, and comes with a lot of costumes and DLC fighters. But with the current model, they can never release a complete complete edition, and always force you to buy skins from their store. With no discount.
Also if i remember correctly, if they sell something from "Inside the game", they don't have to share that profit with Steam. Tho i might be wrong on that.
It's really too bad, as i really enjoy Tekken, and actually wanted to pay full price for it this time around. At worst waiting for a 20% discount. But yea, as it is now, i will just skip it, and buy it dirt cheap, when no one is interested in it anymore. Guess that's the only way to get a complete product these days!.
In the end, you can't win with the greedy nature of humanity. Tekken 8 could go belly up, as players would reject the MTX. Then we would get a long period of the brand being off the gaming market. After say 5 years they would reboot the series. Start slow with rebuilding the trust of the customers/community. Just so we can eventually arrive at the same end point of ultra monetized content in gaming. Or any business venture for that matter.
Capcom is a superb example of this. A studio that almost went under in 2013. Do to poor financial decisions, like chasing the Call Of Duty money, and making bad games because of that.
To a renesans era of good games, that are now being milked dry by MTX.

Characters should of honestly been free, The fact we have all these microtransactions and having to also pay for DLC characters really does just leave a sour taste
I really enjoy Tekken 8 but it hurts to see

Its a slippery slope. Look at mmos now, people are now expecting pay to win and think it's a good thing. Don't be surprised if tekken gets daily reward logins, login streak rewards, time logged in rewards, etc. This is all to minmax the chances of you buying stuff. People often equate time spent = value, even if that time was literally wasted by the company on purpose.

Sure i got the skin. It feels nice. But like all live services, it will one day be gone. Whos to say your "purchase" is "yours" in this online service climate where they can easily shut down or invalidate your purchase?

I agree with you on this, the way they moved forward with the monetization of the tekken shop and the battle pass is really shitty. I could understand if the skins they were offering were original NEW looks for the characters or individual items you can mix and match to create unique outfits for each fighter but the outfits they’re offering at least so far are just legacy skins that have been in past games, that look much lower quality then the default outfits. Don’t get me started on the cyber outfit. The battle pass is a joke too, no one cares for titles or for the tekken lounge avatars. The only cosmetics you get for your fighters are repackaged or retextured clothing items that are already available. Like why is a karate Gi for females the end goal for the battle pass. At the very least call of duty gives cool and over the top skins for their battle pass. I can see why companies move to a battle pass model for their profits because it makes a lot of money sure but atleast reward the player base with something that’s actual worth the 20$ to spend on the pass. I’m not spending 20$ for essentially a bunch of useless profile customizations and 4-5 actual fighter cosmetics. Especially if the cosmetics are plain and unimaginative. I want to keep playing and supporting the product but if it means supporting lazy and cheap development for the sake of just making money, then no. It’s sad to see companies that I used to have faith in keep letting their fans down…

This is my first Tekken game. I instantly fell in love. I wished Eddie was base game after seeing him in a video of an older Tekken. Seeing him added was super cool, and I bought him. I play smash so I was used to dlc characters. But the battle pass is such a pain to see, I love this game and am thinking about it near constantly but I haven’t and likely won’t buy the pass. Not only bc it’s scummy but because I don’t like most of the paid items and the ones I do like are free. It is such a shame to see bamco working on a battle pass instead of fixing issues like plugging

This community is baffling. You expect AAA studios to employ hundreds of people to make fighting games, despite the fact that they have lost their appeal to casual gamers. You all villify Bandai for a 70 dollar price tag, but willingly purchase 100+ dollar loot boxes for live service br games.
If you want AAA fighting games to continue being a thing, support the developers and buy what you like. Some of the men and women employed to make this game for you made far less than what they deserve and would do it again for the love of the genre.

Im gonna tell you like this bro. Stop loving games. Youll only continue disappointing yourself. Instead, choose to love gaming. Tekken is dead. Swallowed up by the mainstream hivemind. Its no different than any other AAA gaming slop. Ive abandoned T8 for Helldivers 2 and havent looked back.

Tbh yea the game's customization is way more lacking then 6 I don't see it all as bad a ton of other games don't do it it's just a skin with same style different color kinda thing. Tho I did also think the battle pass was lacking way to much. Another thing is that why are one character skins costing the same amount as the ninja or cyber pack

  • @DaPhenomAce

Greediness with no effort is the biggest issue. If the fight pass had brand new items that were cool and unique customization for characters that would be ok. But just giving tekken 7 items and a few new items and a blank ball. It is just so lazy and unforgivable
