    Idc if the story mode was well written or not, it was fucking awesome. Especially Angel Jin vs True Devil Kazuya, and the final fight with all the Tekken 3 callbacks and Jin going back into his T3 Mishima style. It was such a love-letter for longtime Tekken fans, and as someone who's first video game ever was Tekken 3, I won't lie I shed some tears, and got hype af, especially hearing Jins theme play.
    (Also, calling the highest rank "God of Destruction" is sick af, and nobody can change my mind. Lol)

      I uh... I think that's how sales in a series works, man...

  • @CErra310
    @CErra310 8 месяцев назад +87

    I think the series' shift to being more overtly "Anime" is, at least in part, owed to the technological progress of videogames. Even if the developers wanted to make a character like Lars or Victor back in Tekken 1, it would have been incredibly difficult to realize it on the PS1 the way they can do it with the tech of today.
    We even see this in Tekken 8 with Raven. Debuting in Tekken 5 he was a somewhat normal "fighter" that just had an unconventional style, and now he is able to summon shadow clones of himself, which mandates that several highly detailed character models doing individual animations from individual positions have to be displayed at once.

    • @wulf8889

    • @Ardrid_
      @Ardrid_  8 месяцев назад +16

      I think by Tekken 5 they were able to do the stuff you see in Tekken 8 just fine judging by other games from the era. I think it has more to do with changing audiences/times and wanting to appeal to different audiences.

    • @SnakeInTheRain
      @SnakeInTheRain 8 месяцев назад +17

      Raven already had shadow clones in Tekken 5, he could also teleport and phase through the opponent when backflipping. We also had the devil characters in Tekken 5 and earlier to some extent. I think another thing people aren't considering is the ratio, out of 3 new characters Victor is the only one that's super crazy and ridiculous. And out of the entire roster around 20 or more out 32 characters are based on actual martial arts. So you're definitely right with the hardware limitations, I think people are just ignoring what was already there. Tekken has always been anime it was just 90s shonen coded, but Tekken always changes with the generations of anime similar to how the music always changes with the generations

You want to customize the music for each piece of the game from menus to stages(love that Jukebox system)? Go right ahead. You want to make your Zafina look like Kunimitsu cosplay? Thats great go for it. Even the gameplay itself, the style of top level Tekken players from each region is so vastly different even when they play the same character you almost couldn't tell they are the same character. Its amazing just how much freedom you have in Tekken and thats the one thing i hope never changes between each game.

  • @RealKatTea
    @RealKatTea 7 месяцев назад +4

    This reads like a movie critic who watched an anime for the first time and reviewed it like it was a blockbuster, using AI to ask what Tekken is about.
    Intro - Tekken 4's intro is def cooler, but it only shows off like 4 characters. Tekken 8 at LEAST shows off like... 8 characters! Or maybe.... all of them? It's hard to fit them all into something coherent, but at least showing the story battle is a decent approach. Also immediately skimming past 5's intro cause it completely disregards your statement is hilarious! The same "issues" persist for both intros
    Fighting Styles - There's not enough UNIQUE marshal arts to go around, g. Even if there are, they would have very few actual techniques that could be transcribed into moves for the games. Who cares if Chinese MA #300 has 4 moves that could work, it's not enough to build a character over. The Tekken team would rather spend the money on something potentially cool than boring anyway.
    Ranked Titles - Tekken's always had these ranks so they decided to stick with them. But sticking to something is bad, right? Oh wait no everybody wants them to stick to only martial arts!! Oh my!! we have quite the dichotomy! God of Destruction is whatever, DBFZ has the exact same title in ranked too, obviously fitting way better there but I digress. The titles past Tekken King are obviously made to one-up one another, and it somehow ended there ig. In the wise words of Eminem "Why be a king, when you can be a god?"
    Rank Cheater - Yeah you're right, but like, name one game that doesn't have cheaters that all give themselves like 99999 points on the leaderboard? Yeah, every company struggles with that, singling out Tekken is just dishonest. For reviews like this, talk about TEKKEN!!! not some issues that persist through literally ALL MP games.
    Also calling the story bad is just... man. Like watch any Tekken RUclipsr play it and they enjoy it immensely. Saying nothing happened is just retarqed, honestly. Were your eyes shut? Do you know what a Tekken is? Is this Tekken in the room with us? You're always comparing SF6 to Tekken so let's go, let's play your game then! Did you like SF6's story? How did you like their character episodes? Did something happen at least?
    overall I give this review about an 8/10. For Tekken 8.
    Disregard what I said, you liked the game and that's all that mattered :)

  • @shaghilathar3588
    @shaghilathar3588 8 месяцев назад +11

    I was gonna say quite a few points but other people have already made those so Ill say this instead: Tekken 8 is aggressive, for a tekken game.
    Not by the standards of other fighting games. Tekkens systems have always been inherently balanced in favour of the defender rather than the attacker, you can duck and sidestep either side, arenas are bigger, movement is hard and most characters dont have many long range moves compared to other fighting games.
    To compare it to 2 other fighting games: Melee and DBFZ. Melee is also about movement but its stages are much smaller, hitboxes are bigger and characters have lots of ways to approach from the air or ground. This makes it so that getting in your opponent and pressuring with aerials and the like is basically unpunishble if you do it right favouring offense. With DBFZ characters can teleport, dragon dash and have many ways to beat blocking so enforcing mix ups is the name of the game.
    Tekken 8 as aggressive as it is can't compare to that level of aggression, nor should it considering the scale and complexity of the game systems. Tekken 8 gives as many offensive options and defensive, its just that the defense was already there from the start and the offense only came here

    Hopefully Soulcalibur VII will get a budget/support from Bamco AND the FGC. It becomes more and more apparent how well designed and *actually* intuitive Soulcalibur's design is the more I learn about Tekken's inconsistent rules. I mean, over half the cast of SCVI had longer movelists than King in T7 (and 11 have more moves than he does in T8) but no one makes videos talking about how impenetrable SC is because the movelists are actually organized and the game actually adheres to universal rules.

    That's a great point you made at around 21:00. I think we can look towards Smash Melee though as an example of aggressive-focused gameplay not becoming stale as long as there are good and creative movement options. Player expression through movement is so entertaining

    • @Ardrid_
      @Ardrid_  8 месяцев назад +3

      I didn't neccesarily mean through just movement, I just meant when aggression and defense are equally strong from a core gameplay standpoint. Movement does play a part in that, but the general safety of moves in Melee, the relatively high shield stun compared to the rest of the series and how strong combos are whilst still giving you strong escape options out of them means theres a good amount of risk reward when deciding whether to be aggressive or defensive in Melee.

    Here's the thing, Tekken 3 was one of the highest selling fighting games of all time and yet TTT 1 had low sales by comparison selling only about 28% of Tekken 3 sales.
    The fact that TTT2 came after Tekken 6 (which wasn't even half as popular as Tekken 5) guaranteed TTT2 would be the worst selling tekken of all time up until that point (yet still managing 43% of Tekken 6 says, thus by percentage comparison performing a lot better than the original TTT).
    TTT2 is still the most fun I've had in a Tekken game and I'm playing Tekken 8 rn (for the last almost 3 weeks) and that's still the case even though I know the internet hates it (especially online only players who often ruin game enjoyment anyway). Tekken 8 really does feel a lot like Tekken 7 part 2.
    And despite all of Tekken 7's content, for someone who has played all of the Tekken games (except for Dark Resurrection on PSP) over the span of 27 years, TTT2 really was the last game that felt like a Tekken game.
    Now it's more of a Street Fighter light show with Tekken Characters.

    as far as tiering system for tekken goes, i think its unique that they dont do the standard metal to alloy rank most games go...the names are gonna sound cringe depending on who you ask though lol. Also mighty ruler is lower than fujin because fujin is a wind god, and god of destruction is currently the best description for an absolute beast of a fighter (its currently the summit of power in dragonball for a reason)

    You are almost completely wrong in your video. TTT2 didn't "almost kill the franchise". Harada himself said it, yes TTT2 failed to be a commercial success, but it never was anything close to put the entire franchise in a risk of disappearing. I mean look at Soul Calibur. SCV did even worse than TTT2 in sales (in hindsight, as a 3D fighter SCV was objectively much worse than TTT2) and that didn't stop them from making SCVI and surely SC7 will occur at some point in the future as well. So it should be easy to understand that "TTT2 almost killed Tekken" is just a rumor spreaded by some very well known Swedish troll RUclips/Twitch streamer (who is currently known to badmouth and demonize TTT2 in his streams, yet he played it enthusiastically back in the day). It's hard to believe that if a second-rate franchise like Soul Calibur, which did far far worse than Tekken did at the same time period, yet was not let down by its developers, then how such a mainstay game series for Bandai Namco as Tekken is, would be getting such fate? No way. It wasn't going to happen.
    TTT2's failure to make it big was due to a bunch of factors almost completely unrelated to that game's quality, namely, poor timing - TTT2 had to compete against SFIV and MK9, both of which were, at the time, heralded as the titles that would bring SF and MK back from their own pitholes they had gotten themselves into. There was great expectation to see both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat's return to glory, and the fighting player community was absolutely hyped for either of them, or both, so TTT2 just went under the radar for most. Also, Bamco failed to market TTT2 as much as they needed to, there was never a "Tekken World Tour" for TTT2 when the game was fresh, nor did they do a massive Twitter campaign to publicize the game as they would do later for T7. And, the most unfortunate and depressing of all, Bamco never made the decision to port TTT2 into Steam as it was done with both SFIV and MK9 (again). Bamco naively believed TTT2 would hit big sales almost on its own so they planned to push other fighting games for PC (Rise of Incarnates) and left TTT2 to look for itself.
    After the weak TTT2 sales and the complete failure of Rise of Incarnates - Bamco's intended fighting game for Steam - all those mistakes were compounded for T7, and it was THAT which made the difference. Because of its smaller budget T7 has positively worse quality than TTT2 in almost every aspect - graphics, visual presentation, character balance, networking, offline content, you name it - yet it sold big because A) it moved onto Steam, something TTT2 never did and B) a flurry of publicity via Twitter, TWT events, constant patches and DLC content etc etc.

Every rank sounds cool and looks cool. Also the naming convention like kyu and dan are based on karate/judo while Genbu and Suzaku are mythical beast. • @Ardrid_
      @Ardrid_  8 месяцев назад +5

      I feel like Street Fighter 6's UI for training mode is easier to understand than Tekken 8's (which is ironic because the only major issue for SF6 imo is that its UI outside of training mode is confusing as hell). It doesn't just teach you what you can do but WHY those things are good. Tekken 8 doesn't have character tutorials or combo trials that are extensive and detailed as SF6's, and I truly think the introduction of the Frame Meter into SF6 is THAT big of an improvement. It made something as obtuse and hard to understand for newcomers like Frame Data and gave it a visual explanation thats easy to read, has a simple explanation for what all the bars mean in-game, and other things. Tekken does have the frame data in-game thankfully for free this time, but you'd probably still need someone to explain to you what the hell that number even means if you didn't know already beforehand, whilst I don't think I could say the same about SF6. It even teaches you specific move properties like invincibility frames through the different bar colours, which Tekken 8 doesn't do to my knowledge.
      Also I think there are minor things like SF6's ability for you to choose the dummy's actions without having to directly record them are more extensive than Tekken 8's, and allow for a greater variety of things it lets you do. I can reliably set up reasonabaly complex situations in SF6 without having to record a single thing specifically, which is a nice thing in streamlining the game.
      However, looking back on it now I would say that Tekken 8's training mode is a lot more on par with SF6's than I made it out to be in the video, although I don't think its quite there yet.

    T8 has 3 major flaws for me, as a longtime fan.
    1. Why has the customization been on a consistent downgrade post-T6? They should be ADDING things like T3 and T5 King, instead they're REMOVING things like full-body Jaguar King. But its still better than MK1 only offering you 1 slot per character, and it isn't $10/skin. Still disappointing, but I'm being fair.
    2. They did not need to canonically undo Ogre's main feat to put Jun in the game if **SPOILERS** her only appearance in the story is in Jin's head. When I fought Azazel the first time, I was positive they were bringing back Ogre for a Jin/Jun story chapter, and it never happened. I'd have left it a mystery until T9 as to whether she's really alive. And even if she is, I'd have made it that Ogre DID kill her, but her Angel powers allowed her to pass back to the reaom of the living.
    3. There is NOTHING for Heihachi legacy fans. I expected Reina to play a lot more like Hei. My solution: Mokujin comes as DLC, with his base style being Heihachi, but you can switch with R3 like Unknown. Maybe he has a small chance to become other characters that we know won't be DLC like Baek or Kazumi.
    And a smaller complaint, but no Team Battle? REALLY?!?!?

      I get what you’re saying about Ogre, but:
      1) his rep was already heavily tarnished when Bruce, Baek, Wang and Ganryu all returned in Tekken 5 after heavy implication Ogre killed them all with their absence in Tekken 3 and 4 and him having at least 1 of their moves. I know many (gen Z in particular) have a soft spot for Tekken 5 but it was the point where Namco began giving up on the lore.
      2) I can’t peg exactly where he started saying it, but Harada has referred to Jun as ‘missing’ rather than outright dead for quite some time now to leave the door open for her return.
      As for Heihachi, well, there’s not supposed to be anything identical for his legacy players, as was the case with characters like Josie and Leroy being spiritual successors to similar absent characters rather than mere model swaps, plus he had been redundant competitively for a while (in a vacuum, he was probably better than Kazuya at least), and Reina so far has been a well-received revamp to the ‘aggressive Mishima’ sub archetype.

    13:35 ...quite sounds to me like Namco saw how _Gran Turismo Sport_ and 7 players can rank up their sportsmanship rating from E to B within a day then blow it back down by smacking onto drivers who expect you (by your SR precisely) to at least try and be somewhat decent... and pushed so hard in the opposite direction that it feels unbearable.
