    22:39 Activision Blizzard Deal
    25:35 Xbox Game Pass & Xbox Series X/S
    On the 18th January 2022, Microsoft announced a deal worth almost $70 billion to purchase triple A game juggernaut Activision Blizzard. The deal sent shockwaves throughout the gaming community as people realized that this meant Xbox would now own Crash Bandicoot which really doesn’t feel right but it also sent shockwaves throughout market regulators most notably the FTC, who within a few months, announced their attempt to entirely block a deal that they felt would lead to a full on market monopoly. Before they knew it, Microsoft was sent down a rabbit hole of appeal after appeal, bringing executives from all across the industry into an all out corporate war between Microsoft and market regulators that despite some false alarms, took almost 2 years to finally slow down.
    It’s easy to see why you’d want to buy Activision Blizzard; They own an amount of IP that rivals that of Nintendo, some of which not only make billions of dollars a year but are some of the most valuable IP in human history, but the amount of effort and legal battles that were put into securing the Activision Blizzard deal takes on an entirely new meaning when you analyze the company that managed to close said deal. Microsoft, or specifically in this case, Xbox.
    Xbox has been throwing large swaths of money at every corner of the industry for the past few years now, and this purchase of Activision Blizzard is just the most recent and by far the biggest manifestation of Xbox’s attempts to fight their way to icon status. But despite popular sentiment online, these attempts are not a practice fueled by corporate greed nor are they a valiant donation to increase the quality and funding of other studio’s games, but rather it's all an attempt to fix an exclusive problem that Xbox started its life off with.
    This video will explore the history of Xbox's relationship with Console Exclusive Games, how that has affected their status in the present day, and their attempts to bring themselves into the future with a Subscription Service.

      The problem with that is that console generations come out in 5+ year intervals. Halfway during that time PC graphics cards basically get better and the previous generations get cheaper and ultimately offer better value for cheaper pricing. I mean if you find the right deal. You can get a laptop with a 3080 for around 1000 dollars. And I know everyone says that's expensive, but when you consider that you double down by having a computer and console in 1, its generally cheaper.
      A google search shows the average person spends around 600 to 700 dollars on laptops. That plus a 500 dollar xbox is 11-12 hundred dollars combined. I got a gaming laptop worth 1900 down to 1200 just through july 4th deals and it has 1tb SSD and 3080. Its honestly hard to argue for an xbox when being smart can get you a device that performs way better, and is upgradable.

      I feel like it more be they attempt to push cloud gaming going forward, and people will merely own things like Roku or other streaming style devices and you just game off that.
      Its downfall however would be that places like the US the internet isn't really at that level where it could support that.
      Or they introduce new technology to make internet faster and more affordable without having to replace hardware.

    The reason games were exclusive to the PS2 wasn't only because the PS2 was popular in the US (mostly because it played DVDs), but also because it was the main console choice to develop and play games in Japan since most studios were also Japanese, like Square Enix, Atlus, Capcom, Konami, etc.

    • @Ardrid_
      @Ardrid_  6 месяцев назад +46

      It was that way in Japan because the original Xbox performed horribly there, as has every single Xbox console that has come into existence. A little correction at 24:48, Steam is not a monopoly it is a market leader which looks similar to a monopoly but is actually very different. People don't go to Steam because it is the only option, they go to Steam because it is the best option. Epic Games Store tried to upset Steam's marketshare but failed because they didn't offer a better platorm than Steam and instead used exclusives to bring more users to them which was unsuccessful as players just waited till those exclusives launched on Steam.

      Lol you don't understand thats what MONOPOLY is. Its control of a market, the circumstances don't matter, it's still a monopoly. Also to add my two cents, every monopoly falls and I sense steam going that way soon possibly, if competition doesn't arise soon we could see a pirating boom similar to the music pirating era, which I think I will happen anyway as all companies in the gaming field are pushing their luck too much. • @Ardrid_
      @Ardrid_  6 месяцев назад +23

      The difference between the two is intent
      PlayStation has bought tons of studios over the years, even more than Microsoft honestly, but the difference is that the vast majority of the studios PlayStation has bought were already established studios on PlayStation platforms that people could swear were already first party; Psygnosis, Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games, Sucker Punch, Insomniac, Media Molecule, Bluepoint, all of these studios before purchase had a significant legacy almost exclusively on PlayStation with games that people tie to those platforms mentally. The intent on purchasing these studios in this case then from PlayStation's perspective, is to reinforce that legacy by making sure these studios that have built up their portfolios primarily on PlayStation platforms, stay on PlayStation platforms, making sure that these games that aren't technically PlayStation owned but most people could confuse them to be, actually are PlayStation owned. Of course there are outliers like Bungie, but the vast majority of PlayStations purchases over the years have been of the type I just mentioned.
      Xbox, on the other hand, have instead looked outward from their own platform to get exclusives; Activision Blizzard, Obsidian, Ninja Theory, Double Fine, Compulsion, Mojang, most of the studios bought by them have had legacies either partly on Xbox or on entirely different platforms to Xbox (Crash Bandicoot used to be associated with PlayStation so hard he was literally the main character in many ads for the PS1). The only major player I can think of that Microsoft has purchased whilst having a significant legacy on Xbox is Bethesda. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind released exclusively on PC and the OG Xbox, never coming out on GameCube or PS2, and that partnership with Xbox has been a tightknit one ever since then, so it makes sense why Xbox would buy Bethesda.
      So yes, its unfair to say Xbox is the only major company buying up major studios left and right, but what I find more valuable is to analyze the intent behind these purchases, as it gives an insight into what their strategy is, and what we might see from them going forward.

      @@parkerburrus289Hardly. It's pretty much incomparable when you look at what Sony does with the studios they acquire, compared to Xbox. Sony supports and lifts those underneath them up, creating success, innovation and quality in spades. Pretty much EVERY game released with the PlayStation Studios logo on it has been an ABSOLUTE BANGER. PlayStation Studios logo is becoming synonymous with the "Nintendo Seal of Quality".
      Then look at Xbox and something like Redfall, which is ALSO a huge stain on their child, Bethesda. That game was so bad the developers at Arkane didn't want to work on it and a lot of them outright left. Even worse the game was outright BAD, and comes at an especially unfortunate time for them, when they needed a W more than ever....
      Hence all the hype and build up for THE XBOX/BETHESDA titles of ALL titles - Starfield... Which I hopefully don't have to break down why it just ISNT on the level of NextGen games and premium titles that Sony AND Nintendo offer. It was deemed a commercial success and most likely was but I would argue not due to it's quality. Instead it is due to the fact that they were able to leverage what loyalty and hype was left for their brand and modern offerings, which in turn, left most ppl feeling burned out or utterly disappointed by the lackluster, half-assed approach that Xbox is CHOOSING and has BEEN choosing to take, for FAR TOO LONG 😮‍💨🤷👎👎.
      I love video games at the end of the day and want Xbox to succeed because I believe that will create better competition for Sony and Nintendo, which will in turn lead to higher standards of quality and innovation.
      I BELIEVED in Starfield so much that I preordered the ultimate edition and LOST that $100 imo. On top of that I didn't even own an Xbox....so I went and bought a PC 😂 but that gave me access to GamePass, which to be fair i could have just got GamePass on my Samsung TV (which is awesome).
      .... SOO, before you try and say I'm just a "Sony Pony", just know that doesn't really work here. And if anything, if you haven't experienced the NextGen offerings that PS5 has to offer, I recommend you do so ASAP!! I never expected video games to have come as far as they have, considering I was born on 90 and had an original Nintendo....but OMFG they are SOO amazing in this modern day, and they look only to be getting better with upcoming titles such as Dragons Dogma 2 and Black Myth Wukong. The issue is that the previous head of PS division left the company in such a termoil most projects have been canned, Bungie is about to be taken over by a hostile takeover by Sony and most life service push has been wasted.
      In this manner Xbox has actually managed their ecosystem better, making money flow cpnstantly and off setting losses by expanding the market.

    This is the issue with Xbox. They have money but don't know what to do. When you have infinite resources you tend do do bad things with them. It feels like they don't want to get involved with what they make. They just throw money at the problem until it gets fixed. This is, to me, why they are messing up again and again. There's an old story where Shinji Mikami was talking with Nintendo and Microsoft to figure out where to release RE4. He had a meeting with the Xbox team and he asked what was Xbox's vision for gaming as Nintendo saw games as toys and Sony saw games as movies. The Xbox team couldn't give him a satisfactory answer so RE4 launched on the GameCube. I think Xbox still wouldn't be able to answer that question definitively because providing games as a subscription service is a business vision and not necessarily a creative vision.

    • @Ardrid_
      @Ardrid_  6 месяцев назад +17

      That's interesting, never heard that story before. Xbox do sound like the kind of company to be more business minded than Sony or Nintendo. They were founded by a trillion dollar tech conglomerate that focused on commercial software and operating systems, which I guess would give them a more "technical" approach to games rather than a creative approach.
      Still, that's not necessarily a bad thing; Xbox Game Pass seems to be doing fine as of now precisely because of that more technical mindset, but it still remains to be seen if that momentum can be carried forward into the future, and it may be for the reasons you mentioned.

    BIG ASS RAMBLING below, I just love the discussion.
    I feel like there is more/worst problems than Exclusives but at the same time I feel like Xbox wouldn't be on this position they are in if they "just" made good games. I think is also because their strategy still needs something more drastic.
    Playstation fumbled with the PS3 and made a comeback with the PS4 using the strategy everyone now thinks is the standard: Making High-Quality AAA exclusives every year, just look at TGA. Their games being on TGA obviously don't mean they are better than the others, but they are there constantly and it's the presence that matters, a presence that is hard to ignore.
    Nintendo fumbled with the Wii U and made a comeback with the Switch. The fact that Nintendo Switch is still the only MAIN portable console still baffles me. But it's not just the console, the exclusives like Mario Odissey, Zelda BOTW, Smash Bros and Pokemon still helped the console a lot of course. I just don't think that the Switch would be a success without exclusives because it's pretty weak and it lacks many mainstream games.
    Xbox fumbled with the Xbox One... and they're still trying to recover. Xbox Game Pass is their main strategy but it lacks... something. I thought exclusives weren't the main problem because, well they are buying all these studios exactly to put their games on Game Pass as you pointed out, but it's not really working... in a way. The thing is: I think Xbox now is more of a Third Party platform than First Party, their strategy is Quantity over Quality, just put more and more games on Game Pass and that's it. It's definitely the strategy that is the most weird for us because the focus it's not the value of the console but the service instead, especially because Game Pass and most Xbox games are also on PC. Because of this Xbox have a much smaller presence than Playstation and Nintendo.
    I think there are two routes Xbox can go:
    Xbox is going to become a company more similar to Valve or Epic and focus specifically on Cloud Gaming. As you pointed out in the video, I also DEFINITELY think Xbox is going to stop making consoles at some point. They are not just investing on Game Pass but also investing heavily on XCloud, Cloud Gaming. I think this is a slightly more possible route because of how things are now and also because of Phill Spencer, he is always talking about gaming being accessible to everyone and I always felt like he underestimates the importance of exclusives, especially after the podcast episode, before the release of Starfield, where he says that even if Starfield was 11/10 it would still not make Xbox sell more than Playstation.
    The second route of course:
    Xbox just starts making some actual good games, Starfield, even if controversial, was a success and I remember that a lot of people bought the console because of it, so that may make Phill see that exclusives matter.
    As someone that have Xbox One since 2017, every year felt like "THE YEAR OF XBOX"... and them they fuck it up again and again. Now, Im REALLY hesitant to say that 2024 is going to be that year but... oh well. The games for now are: Avowed (Obsidian), Clockwork Revolution(InXile), South of Midnight(Compulsion Games) and lastly but not least: Fable (Playground Games), which(COPIUM) gives me Horizon vibes because Guerrila only made Killzone and them they made Horizon which was a Success; Playground only made Forza and now they are giving their shot on Fable so MAYBE it's a sign?(copium again).

      And I hope Fable is good as well but it’s too far off to say…I just hope at the game awards we see some news on maybe the next doom or that rumoured unannounced Xbox title (probably Gears 6). And I definitely wanna see more of that Indiana Jones game by Machine Games, now that would be incredible. Fingers crossed.

    The gaming Industry has lost direction and focus on the aspects of gaming that we all love and like to experience. I hope they rejuvenate gaming to the era around PS2 to Xbox 360 era. Then add our new Unreal engine 5 software capabilities, new hardware tech capabilities. Then TAKE RISK'S AGAIN! Make wacky odd Creative games of All type's of genre's & art style's! I love games with physics, reactive combat gameplay, gross/weird, detailed smaller environments that entice us to explore or solve puzzles (Don't aim for large open world with no interest) I like games that give me the feeling of games from the Xbox 360 era. I love 3rd person video games. I love singleplayer games, local multiplayer games & can play offline game modes against bots. Games that focus on detective/forensic evidence discovery exploration experience. An example of some games I enjoyed (definitely not adding every game I enjoyed here but here's some):
    ~prey 1, Alan Wake, max Payne, LA noire, fear, NFL Blitz, banjo-kazooie, Jedi knight: Jedi outcast 2, dark forces 2, Hexen 2, fusion frenzy, Batman, jazz jackrabbit 2, GUN, Metro, the order 1886, red dead Revolver, NBA street vol. 2, singularity, star wars force unleashed, dead space, BioShock, Heretic 2, condemned, halo1-3, assassin's Creed 1 and 2, Turok, rage 1,sly cooper, Dante's inferno, battlefront 2, quake, half-life, silent hill, SSX tricky, amped, motorstorm, skate 1. It would be cool if they made some new MMA or Boxing games. Just getting gaming to that feel of the games from that 2000's- 2010's era vibe. Where games were Fun, and filled with options for the player to get lost in the game even if they are playing singleplayer off line. Like how star wars battlefront 2 did with the CPU bot enemies.
    90s-00s gaming had such a vast range of creativity. I love the amount of risk they took on odd concepts in This Y2K era- the Dreamcast/PS2/360. It should show us that GRAPHICS are not the most important thing.. If you can create satisfying movement, gameplay mechanics, physics effects, responsive parts of a environment that makes you want to explore it, engage it, etc. That stuff is so much more important. Not: {"Who can make the largest game map? Or have the most reflections?"} I think Art style, design, vibe, aesthetic is much more important. You don't need top notch graphics to greatly appreciate and enjoy playing a game. That's why we are seeing such a resurgence of players who have gone back to playing older games because they realized the aspects of gaming that they care about and are unhappy with most modern games. So hopefully gaming will enter a new era. That mixes in aspects of the older era's. With our modern capabilities that will hopefully help make it easier to create a satisfying game (without it taking 8 years to build a broken game. Hopefully) Currently everything is trying to be like a Triple AAA game or a free to play online battle Royale game.. A lot of us miss when we had game selection similar to how the Dreamcast/GameCube/360/PS2 era had a mix of. As well alot of those games came with options for local multiplayer, split screen, LAN parties, or offline modes against bots or other diverse offline CPU game modes. Yet modern games are not only lacking those dynamic options that give games nearly endless replayability features... Modern games are lacking even meeting the most basic standards for game's... They don't seemed focused on the core of the games to be Fun. They over focus on "realism" Rather than adding in Artistic adaptations for the greater good of gaming as a whole.. We could be doing so much better yet people are just coming out with the most bland game design, braindead AI, less care for physics effects... We could be doing so much better than this..

      Whilst the sentiment that "games have become less willing to take risks and overall feel more uninspired than games of just 10 years ago" is one that is very popular and one I somewhat agree with, I have a pretty optimistic view of the industry going forward.
      Most of the anti-risk taking practices that have been put into place in the industry have largely been done so by AAA developers, who have far too much to lose to spend the 100s of millions on each game that they need to nowadays, whilst just a decade ago development team sizes were much smaller (Skyrim only had roughly 100 people working on it, whilst the next Elder Scrolls game is likely to have close to 1000 across the world) and much less expensive to maintain. The old AAA publishing model has also gone out of fashion due to the existence of online storefronts like Steam, and how easy it is for smaller studios to put their games on them independently. In the 90s and 2000s, if you wanted to release a game, you had to release it in stores, and to save money on making game boxes and burning CD's, you'd go through a publisher like Activision. This made Activision a LOT of money, and they were able to take more risks on their own internal games because of that. But now that has gone away, they have to rely on each individual game to make as much money as possible. Having that amount of pressure on just a few things means you take less risks, that's just the nature of things, and this is why AAA studios are so anti-innovative nowadays; because they lost their publishing business', they weren't getting the backbone of money needed to be able to take said risks.
      Why I have a lot of confidence in the industry going forward, however, is that Indie game development is only getting more powerful and accessible by the year, and those studios don't have the same monetary needs as AAA studios. So they are able to take more risks.
      Its already been a trend in the past decade for independent games to push the bar for games rather than AAA studios, and I think this trend will continue to become even more true if the democratization of game development becomes even more apparent.

    To be fair, Wii wasn’t a “bad” console as it’s still they’re only console in the TOP 5 best selling consoles. The first draft for the PS3 was what ended up being the 360 as they were able to get their hands on their scrapped idea. PlayStation managed their time poor as their exclusives ended up in the middle or end of the gen, if they’re games were in the beginning then they’re console wouldn’t have been in 2nd place but in 1st.

Starfield is their first BIG first party exclusive partly because Bethesda was their first acquisition to make these kind of BIG games. They only bought smaller developers before that, none of which made BIG games. And some are specialized in niche games, Double Fine especially. Obsidian has been their most productive studio in that bunch and they've only put out niche title so far.

    Decent video, but here are a few errors Ipicked up on:
    1) The 360 was actually last place overall during that generation. The PS3 was consistently selling more annually than the 360 during most years and the Wii was significantly ahead of both. It only started to drop off by around 2010.
    2) The PS3 didn't use an APU, it already had its own separate graphics chip called the RSX. The issue with the PS3 was the SPEs, otherwise it was pretty similar to the 360 hardware wise (they actually had the same PPE core).
    3) You ignored the impact of RROD on the 360 and the effects that the price cuts/exclusive titles had on the PS3 during its later years.
    Also, calling the Wii/PS3 bad systems isn't really fair. Each console that gen had its pros/cons, which was why the sales figures were so close.

It'd be better to announce or reveal the game 1 or 2 years before its release. Xbox need to communicate better with their studios and make the suitable decision for announcing and revealing upcoming games. Fans love surprises. Xbox has announced so many unique and exciting games but don't know exactly when they're coming out? Completely radio silence on all announced games. I'm really so excited for Avowed, Everwild, Fable, State of Decay 3, Outer Worlds 2, South of Midnight, Indiana Jones, Contraband, Perfect Dark, Elder Scrolls 6 and much which have announced a long ago. I'd disagree that the Gamecube had more cultural impact than the original Xbox. Outside of Japan the Xbox outsold the Gamecube in other regions. I personally knew no one that had a Gamecube growing up but knew people with an og Xbox. The only game from the Gamecube that could combat Halo's cultural impact is Smash Bros Melee imo.
    Also surprised you didn't mention during the Kinect era of the 360 is when the PS3 actually managed to overtake the 360 in sales due to Sony pumping out quality exclusives like Infamous, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, The Last of Us, etc. So saying they won the 7th generation when they came last place is odd.

    • @X2011racer
      @X2011racer 6 месяцев назад

      Crash was a substantial thing back in the day, and Spyro was... just there. The Spyro series didn't make any landmark impacts on the industry. The first game was only made because Sony noticed that there were very little E Rated games on the Playstation and Universal, under contract with Sony, was forced to make one as Crash wasn't enough.
      While many people saw Crash as a rival to Mario and Sonic, nobody saw Spyro as a rival to anything. He's just there.
      The only time Spyro would actually become a big name to the public would be Skylanders, but by Skylanders Giants, he fell out of the Spotlight, although he would still play a somewhat larger role on other Skylanders media, such as the Mask of Power novels, or Skylanders Academy (where he had an ongoing character arc during Season 2, but ends unresolved by the end of Season 3).
      In short, Spyro was never big, and Spyro fans overexaggerate the series' popularity.

      I blame Activision's highway robbery licensing fees for why, as that screwed over Sony and Superbot in regards to Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. Activision wanted over a billion or trillion dollars just to add Crash into PSASBR, all because they wanted to negotiate with Sony, not Superbot, who Sony sent to negotiate. Plus, the game was under an indie sized budget, so Crash was way above budget, and Sony provided ZERO financial support for cases like these.
      I had a good feeling that Nintendo wasn't willing to spend that amount of money either just to get a license to develop one Challenger Pack. They would have to up the price to about $70 just to cover the insane licensing costs and no one wants that.
