  • Xbox's Exclusive Problem has been a conversation I keep seeing come up, time and time again. It seems like The Xbox exclusive games list was stronger when they started out than it is today and a lot of discussions have sprung up through the years about that topic. This video today is from Ardrid who dives a bit deeper into the topic.

You think that Ardid did a great and thoughtful job? All I heard was more misleading information and more Xbox hate simply regurgitated and rewrapped in a new shiny package from yet another bias content creator. It's absolutely frustrating the tactics and lengths these fanboys will go to when it comes to Xbox. Gamepass is making hundreds of millions a month to offer its customer more games at better value but that's considered unsustainable? I actually wanna play more then just FIFA, CoD, 2K and Fortnite. In other words I don't consider myself a casual gamer. I actually like having a backlog of games to play, especially during a gaming draught.
Playstation burns through hundreds of millions for one niche game with low replayability then scrambles to break even and that's a better strategy then what Xbox is doing? I don't care about graphics as much as I care about having fun on any game and Playstation isn't the place that focuses on fun first outside of third-party games.
No, I won't be checking his channel out. It's obvious who he made that video for. The Xbox Tax is real Destin.

I think Microsoft just realized sooner than Sony that the industry was moving to 5-7-year development cycles for AAA games which means you need 20-28 studios making first party games to have a first party release every fiscal quarter. And that's assuming that every game in development actually releases. In reality, you probably need over 30 studios to be able to actually pull off a game every quarter in this new AAA environment. Sony is starting to run into this reality and really slowing down on releases right as Microsoft's major investment in studios in the late 2010s is finally starting to result in releases. I imagine the rest of this decade is going to have far more Xbox releases than PlayStation. Now, the quality of those games definitely needs to come up a bit, but the reality of development time is on Xbox's side moving forward.

The insomniac leak costs and profits really shows this a lot. This is a content problem in general. We see it in Netflix and streaming and even in movies now. All the top producing companies are only able to pump money into big budget content but that's really hurting margins. Everything is given a shorter production amount of episodes, wait times between movies and shows are getting longer, most of what we see are franchise and ideas people are tired of, and so on. There aren't many new quality ideas anymore. It's the same issue in gaming. Insomniac has gone from Ratchet and Clank (my favorite PS game) and sunset overdrive to being a Marvel dev studio. AAA publishers are only able to make licensed games and established franchises. And deadlines keep getting tighter forcing rushed games. Sony still produces great high quality games but not nearly as many anymore in terms of first party. I'd really love someone to list all the first party Xbox games vs Playstation games this year.
Xbox has a MUCH better mix already of AA and AAA games and live service and traditional games. As well as all the studios and publishers to really advance this strategy. Sony's going to have to really revisit their strategy soon. They were supposed to get out a lot of live service games to take the pressure off their high quality AAA games which take longer and have razor thin margins. Now with Jim Ryan leaving they look to be doing a LOT of downsizing which mort of the industry is right now, but doesn't bode well if they don't change strategies because game development costs and time is still rising.

This is something the original video fails to mention. Yes every game was ported to ps2 simply because it has a large user base.
However these ports were often butchered and gimped due to the PlayStation being under powered. And the games would run better on Xbox and PC.
Even GTA sanandreas looks like trash on ps2. Textures aren’t good and the game if covered in orange smoke due to the low draw distance. In 2013 there was this narrative in the industry that console gaming was dying with the rise of Mobile/Tablet gaming and had a lot of publishers and CEOs weary about the future of the console market. Microsoft has this really bad habit of seeing the future 10 years in advance when no one wants it... and then giving up 5 years later when they've moved no units. It happened with the Zune (they had a music subscription before Spotify). It happened with the Windows Phone. And it happened with the Xbox One (consoles now launch as $500 without the connect and have a BIG entertainment push with streaming). Microsoft has always had and still has a marketing problem. Even then people don't really appreciate how much of an uphill battle Xbox has always had within Microsoft. For the longest they didn't even get full support from all the gaming studios and IP at Microsoft (windows gaming was treated as separate). It's only this generation we're seeing Microsoft PC games on Xbox (Flight Simulator, Age of Empires). Xbox was fighting Sony and Nintendo with significantly less experience and funding and studios. It's ridiculous to see people complaining about Microsoft buying studios when Xbox started with a fraction of the studios and IPs Sony and Nintendo had. Plus Phil had to fight to prove gaming and Xbox were WORTH the support from Microsoft when Microsoft wanted to cut the division entirely. Nowadays, I wish Xbox got more credit for it's variety. Especially now with the studios and publishers purchased. 2023 shows a great mix of AA and AAA games across so many genres and game strategies.

You could say that early Nintendo and Sony had a market monopoly. The only reason why Japanese game companies get away with so much is that they're not tied to the same rules and regs as American companies. Com'on fanboys -- wake up! I wish armchair idiots would realize that Sony bought and relied on what were initially third-party companies to make their games (Insomniac, Guerrilla Games, Naughty Dog, Bungie...). They haven't bought more Japanese game studios because there is a gentleman's agreement that they'll support Japanese hardware giants first. Anyone with skin in the game knew that Japanese studios were notorious for producing top-shelf products (color manuals, CD art, and content) and giving U.S. and PAL budget-tier stock.
There's no gaming without the U.S. market. FULL STOP. However, Sony fanboys are so threatened by Microsoft. Sony's silent monopoly is exactly why companies like EA, Activision, and Ubisoft were able to get away with so much garbage for as long as they did.

Let's be real: at this point, MS has purchased most of the major IPs in the last few years... so, no, it DOES NOT have an exclusive problem.
What they have is a slow rollout problem. We won't see new games with those IPs for a while, because games take forever to make. MS is playing the very long-game, which won't likely start for another 3-5 years.
In the near-term, they'll continue to make multi-platform games easily accessible on the Series S, X, and cloud.

Actually, Ardid is wrong about the first Xbox being in last place in its console generation; it actually beat out the GameCube by some millions of units (you can especially see this evidently shown in the transition sequence at 15:44). While the GameCube definitely put up a fight with the other 2 competitors, it ended up being the first Nintendo system to be outsold by a Microsoft console in a respective generation.
Item: I'm actually shocked he didn't mention the IBM Cell broadband processor. Lots of 3rd party game companies, namely Valve, were NOT fans of that processor. Cell was so disliked that it's likely the biggest reason Apple switched to Intel processors around that time for its computers.

I just have to make this one comment. It’s the one thing we all overlook when it comes to Xbox but pick any generation for the Xbox and they were spot on when it came to one thing and it’s the one thing everybody embraced. Technology. Microsoft has accurately predicted what we wanted from technology, every single generation, even the one generation where we think they failed miserably. Look at the system they dropped. They gave us MP like we never dreamed. They brought us back to the old golden eye 007 days. Remember you could drag for TVs for Xbox is all into a room and play together. It was cumbersome. It was a pain in the butt. We did it in college but they showed you you could game with your friends. What happened the next generation, the Xbox 360 generation that gave you Internet so you can play with your friends even more. Not that Sony didn’t eventually come with the Internet, but they were late to the party. Now let someone try and sell you a system without Internet you laugh at them. Look, we laughed at Nintendo when they said all we don’t really have great Internet for the system. Go back to the Xbox One press conference yeah, you know the one. The one where they talking about television and gaming combining everything together when it’s more of about TV than actually playing on your platform of choice. We hated it. How much time do you spend watching movies and TV on your game system again? For most gamers out there it’s where we go when we turn on Netflix or Hulu or any other streaming platform that’s where we go first. People don’t give Microsoft credit every generation. They have literally shown the people what they wanted sometimes before they even realized what they wanted, but they were spot on. This generation what has Microsoft shown us to be the potential future two things they said hey look at this cloud in the sky and they said would you like to subscribe? People don’t think this is the future but guess what gaming consoles have saturated the market. There aren’t many more people out there to sell a system too no matter how big your company is they’re only so many people who are going to give you $500 for you need to sell games to more people games are more expensive than ever. How do you sell them to more people you have to go to them where they are. Who’s built the infrastructure to go to them where they are, it’s not Nintendo it’s not Sony. You can argue Sony tried streaming video games which they did but they had horrible infrastructure. Microsoft actually has the knowledge and the know how to build that infrastructure and they have one thing that both their competitors don’t have they have money and it takes money to build a subscription based infrastructure. Don’t ask me don’t take my word for it go ask how much money it took to build a subscription based in structure. The competitors Netflix has they have money, and they had to use every dime of it to build a decent subscription based infrastructure. All of Netflix competitors that are crashing and burning right now, they didn’t put enough money into building that infrastructure.

#1) *You have to learn how to type in paragraphs.* On RUclips, you can put a space in between thoughts by pressing the "enter" key. This works on PC as well as mobile.
Please take a moment to notice how much easier it is to read my response with paragraphs where I separate ideas instead of throwing up a gigantic wall of text like you did.
#2) Microsoft has only had four versions of consoles in the history of the brand - the O.G. Xbox, the Xbox 360, the Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Out of the big three, Microsoft has been in the gaming business for the shortest amount of time. As far as "technology", Microsoft did itself a huge favor with it's use of the PowerPC architecture which helped it be more developer friendly compared to the PS3's cell processor.
#3) Microsoft has not always gotten in right and they don't give customers what they want before they realize they want it. To imply that they do is simply foolish. Microsoft's hard pivot away from the X360 (a gaming centric platform) to the XONE (a tv/entertainment centric platform) showed exactly how out-of-touch their management was at the time - and this included Phil Spencer - and it led to the demise of the brand and destruction of all of the positive goodwill Microsoft established during the height of the X360 era.
#4) Netflix has already gotten the attention of outlets within the gaming community for launching the remade/remastered GTA trilogy in a finished form that didn't have some of the issues the game had when it originally launched on PC and consoles. Netflix is rapidly growing the number of games available through their service and will undoubtedly prove to be competition for any company trying to promote gaming on a mobile platform.

    • @SilverJoystix

Throwing money at a problem doesn't mean you are addressing the root cause of the problem. Microsoft attempting to buy the industry doesn't automatically mean they will solve the problem of not having meaningful exclusive content at the table.
Good games are the result of successful collaborations between creative and technical people and resources executing good ideas at the right time.
In the case of Microsoft, throwing more money at the problem simply means they have more potential opportunities to show the gaming industry how incapable they are at achieving this level of collaboration and achieving these results.

One thing I'm curious about - despite owning Bethesda and ABK, do we think that there's a "brand association" problem with xbox and these acquired publishers?
Part of me imagines that it'll just take time for Xbox to become synonymous with e.g. Fallout, Call of Duty, Spyro/Crash(?) etc - in the same way that Mario is synonymous with Nintendo, or Kratos with Playstation.
But then look at Minecraft - kept fairly independent, that franchise seems to lack an association with Xbox. Does Phil plan to maintain the independence of Bethesda/ABK, and if so, will this impact xbox's brand association with these publishers?
It's something I've mused whenever people mention that Xbox "has no exclusives" - which isn't true. Is this more a perception problem than anything else?

That's some revision is history that you have there Destin...
The PSone had tons of popular exclusive titles you couldn't get anywhere else:
    Crash Bandicoot (trilogy)
    Jet Moto
    Gran Turismo
    Tekken
    Metal Gear Solid
Final Fantasy VII/ FF VIII/ FF IX
    Battle Arena Toshinden
    Spyro
Tomb Raider 2/ Tomb Raider 3
The list really went on and on. It's why it sold so well and was the 1st console to cross 100 million sales. Many of the games were defacto exclusives because the Sega Saturn failed so early and the N64 was still cartridge based.
Then you had games were timed exclusive like Resident Evil 2 and RE3. They literally solidified themselves as the place for more mature exclusive titles compared to NINTENDO.

Keep caring about hardware sales when in the future the mass majority will play games on whatever device they want. Yes there will always be gamers just like there are still videophiles who insist on 4k movies on discs.
But i love how much louder the chorus of voices is getting. It's as if they have to speak it into existence or they are all MSFT shareholders. Otherwise, why care about it at all?

A good reason why PlayStation 5 is currently outselling the Xbox, that is because the PlayStation 4 is so successful that the owners PlayStation 4 are automatically switching to the 5 because they are firstly tied in two the Sony infrastructure because of all the digital purchases. Also because a lot of them still have not dared to move away from the PlayStation.

    35:29 - Nope.
It WAS required, and they did change it later, via a patch to NOT need it.
Most games suffered heavily, as the kinect needed SYSTEM RAM to function, and hence games had to account for LESS system ram if a user had a kinect. Which was almost always.
Later, they raised that limit, as the kinect was no longer needed, and some games would CRASH if you had the kinect -- but later the xbox OS would allocate resource properly despite that and just shut down the kinect.

i think that the "problem" with Xbox exclusives is, that they acquire franchises when they are way passed their peak/prime moment.
    The same with studios.
Nobody cares about Spyro and Crash anymore. Sea of Thieves is ok, but RARE in its prime was during the N64 days. More people hate Activision/Blizzard now than ten years ago. More people lost faith in Bathesda now than 10 years ago etc etc.
While people love studios like Insomniac, guerilla and Santa Monica more today than 10 years ago

I was honestly really excited about the initial e3 messaging for the xbox one. Family sharing, being able to trade digital games, the tv pass-through worked awesome, we spent more time playing Kinect stuff than we did other games it was a great way to bring the family together, and the kinect voice commands that I sorely miss now.
Sony was luck they got the 8 GB of ram on the ps4. Imagine how different things would have been had it had half the memory of the Xbox One.

40:57 - Halo, Forza, Gears of War and Fable have always been what I'd consider the "core four" of Xbox's first-party lineup, at least through the first two generations of the brand. Fable fell victim to the Kinect pivot and sadly was left by the wayside up until recently
