- In early 2013 Microsoft revealed its successor to the immensely popular Xbox 360, the Xbox One, and what happened soon after damaged the brand significantly. On the first episode of IGN Rewind, we're looking back on gaming history at the troubled launch and reveal of the Xbox One.
Xbox is still suffering to this day because of this single event. The industry needs to never forget this moment.

Still waiting for that "Xbox 720"
Honestly. Everyone expected it to be named 720. There was even a reference in the movie Real Steal. Xbox One still one of the dumbest names for a console next to WiiU
@@masterofIich Agreed. Maybe they should have called it the Xbox Series One. It would have at least made sense moving forward considering how the following generation's nomenclature turned out.
@@masterofIich the Xbox one was arguably a bigger failure than the wiiu too considering how bad Microsoft got embarrassed by PlayStation that generation
Maybe when XBOX gets to work on their next console.
Codename: Project Flipside
No 720 is the dumbest name ever and sounds like it was made up by a 10 year old from mw2.
It's crazy how Microsoft did a complete 180 when it comes to backwards compatibility. It's great for game preservation.
Fake backward compatibility
Backwards compatibility has been a thing long before Xbox did it. PC has had total backwards compatibility. PS2, Launch PS3, GBA, Wii, DS, Wii U and 3ds all had backwards compatibility before Xbox One.
@@redring4083 OP wasn't saying they did it first though.
Backwards compatibility was the ONLY card M$ could play, after all the damage they caused
@@redring4083 Yeah but you have to take in to consideration the 8th gen consoles had completely different architectures than the previous gen which made backwards compatibility difficult so it was a big deal to be able to put in your discs from the og Xbox and 360 in to your Xbox one and now series x. Which is something you can’t say about the ps5 which you can only play ps4 discs, not ps1, 2 or 3
Remember when IGN cut the "boo" from the XBOX One Reveal and edited in the audience applause instead.
It's rich to hear them now describe it as a "Troubled Reveal".

it’s insane how this one event and moment in time caused so much damage to the perception of Xbox that it has NEVER recovered since. Ofc other factors have held Xbox down since but this handed Playstation an open goal and they weren’t missing.
Well the wild thing that they were right. Not about everything, but about most of the stuff they were talking about in 2013. They got clowned for talking about tv so much, but in 2025 I can guarantee that you're watching most of your entertainment through a video game console. TV shows, live events and movies all on your PS or Xbox, but they got clowned. Also going digital. They got clowned for that, but PS put out a digital only PS5 years later and nobody clowned them. I can't remember the last time I bought a physical disk. It's just so much easier heading to my library and simply playing the game I want. Xbox knew this would be the case more than a decade ago. And let's not get started on internet. They got clowned for wanting ppl with internet access to buy the Xbox One, but there's nobody gaming today who doesn't have at least a solid connection.
Don Matrick sold a lot of PS4's that day.
I still think he was getting commission
And here we are Xbox supporting more backwards compatibility than PS by a long shot. You can play OG Xbox games on Series S/X
You can play ps1 games on ps5.
what about some support for new games
Big thanks to no backward compatibility by Sony. So xbox player can play resident evil 2, in remake terms.
I'd rather play new games
You can play PS1 games on Xbox Series S|X
Microsoft basically helped sell PS4s
It was just Microsoft returning the favor from their previous generation 😂
@@kymmzej9173 Difference is that PS3 outsold the 360 in the end. Xbox One came nowhere near the sales of PS4.
Till this day I’m curious why would they make a “game console” into focusing on TV and movies
At the time, the industry thought mobile gaming (due to microtransactions) was going to surpass PC and console gaming. So, XB1 was designed to capitalize on cloud gaming... That still hasn't fully materialized... That would provide a more mobile-like gaming experience and doesn't require a lot of processing power. That's one reason why the XB1 had such weak hardware even back then. Thus, the focus was more on a giant phone-like device where consumers could game, watch movies & TV and listen to music. This idea is something MS had since the '90s, but it's always been too ahead of its time, ironically, or badly executed like the XB1.
feel sad for those xbots that buyed it up for truly nothing.
Some gamers do those things too and have home theaters and such to consider.
Because Xbox has no games and never will.
@@andrewmoore7927 it's true.

Thank goodness that Phil Spencer was able to turn things around afterwards. Special attention goes to the console redesigns. The Xbox One X remains my absolute favorite console from the 8th generation.
But at least it got launch exclusive titles and on my Series X after two years there is no first party exclusive AAA titles to play.

This video doesn't do the cataclysmic catastrophe of Xbox One's 2013 reveal. It was much, much more far reaching than just internet and E3 reactions, Microsoft stock took a nosedive that day. Xbox One's demise was further compounded by their continuous exclusive failures.
When Horizon Zero Dawn came out on the PS4 in 2017 and Breath of the Wild releasing alongside the Switch - both receiving massive acclaim - it was officially *f***ing over for Xbox One*

This was insane to watch unfold as it happened
X bots could not even defend Xbox
11 years later and the Xbox brand is still pretty much dead because of this one event.
The name was dumb, no used game, always on internet connection, HAVE to use Kinect and it cost 100 dollars more than competition…this presentation still haunts them and I’m a guy that loves Xbox
"Look at our multimedia machine. It also plays games." - XBOX
There are still people (xbots) to this day that think the Xbox one was a 1080p workhorse and that the ps4 was the 720p machine.
@Ultra Brian wow did u just fail harder than xbox, bahahahahahah. clown
Greg miller ! Miss you man . Ign died when you left
I'm seeing a track record with Phil Harrison. First the PS3's horrible launch, the Xbox one's horrible launch and the Stadia in general...he had his hands deep in all of these projects.
Here’s my hot take - Sony was prepared to include the camera as part of the PS4 package and likely planned to price PS4 at or close to the One’s price (maybe a little less, considering that the PS4 camera ended up selling for $59.99).
IIRC, their E3 presentation was 21 hours after Xbox’s. Being 5 months out, it gave them time to exclude the camera and announce the $399.99 price tag, not to mention produce the “Sharing Games” video… Don’t think that they didn’t have a similar strategy! What they DID have was time to backpedal privately after seeing the reaction.
Xbox’s biggest mistake was not reacting more vigorously to the negative feedback.
TO THIS YEAR, they never fully recovered.
And still to this day, they're dealing with the repercussions.
The ONE naming was supposed to represent the one and only entertainment system needed in your living room. But it was confusing. It would be better if it were named Xbox Unity.
The always online device is a bad idea especially at the time
And the fact u can't share games was a crime 😅
Dude, 11 years ago feels like yesterday… people look exactly the same as they do now…
They backtracked so fast about the DRM thing, there's no way noone at testing raised a concern
Corporate execs got cocky from the 360 gen and thought they could do whatever the hell they wanted and consumers would eat it up
an equivalent of Sony PS3 disastrous launch
The PS3 at least made a comeback and got revitalized later on in the generation to the point that it actually beat the Xbox 360 in sales. The Xbox One was a complete failure for the entire 8th generation.
Ps3 was still a huge success inspite of being twice the price of base xbox 360 model.
Even worse than PS3 launch as PS3 came back to outsell 360. Xbox One never even looked like it was capable of a fightback against PS4 last gen.
The Xbox brand never recovered ever since
Sony requires people to make a PS4 and PS5 their primary console just so you can share games with friends, even if it's not your console, which means your own console won't be your primary console just so your friends can enjoy a game of yours.
Just saying.
This is not for disc based games like the Xbox One intended. You can give your PS4/5 disc to a friend and he can play the game. Xbox One discs would be worthless after the first install and that was the entire problem. Game sharing =/= game lending.

This launch set Sony up to crush Xbox for 2 console generations.
Last month Xbox literally said PS makes better games. That’s nit even hyperbole. They actually said that. And that they only have 59 exclusives to PS’s 286… they admit they are long overdo for a major first party game, with their 23 studios. How incompetent can you be? If not for MS huge pockets for this deal they’d be in the same spot they were in in 2013. When you need to spend 69 (nice) BILLION dollars JUST to compete… you know you’re in a bad spot.
Last month Sony said that none of their exclusives can compete with COD. Think about it this way, you don't spend $69 billion to fail, Sony is very worried.
To this very day xbox is still recovering even though series x is far superior to the one.
How the tables have turned?

It’s pretty hard to look back and see the launch Xbox One as anything other than disastrous. They (Phil spencer) definitely turned it around with the One S/One X/ dropping Kinect/dropping the internet requirement, but that first couple weeks/months were rough - especially considering the OG Xbox One was less capable than the ps4 and sold at a time 100$ higher price.
Face the truth man
Don't let the facts bother you so much broski.
This video really does make the chain of events look less worse than it was.
- Xbox had every opportunity between their initial reveal and E3 presser, to fully walk back their “always online” requirement in definitive clear terms. They never did.
- Even after the Xbox E3 press event and being gutted by Sony’s E3 press event later that day. Interviewers tried to get direct answers about always online from both Mattrick and even Major Nelson. Neither clearly disputed the claims and Mattrick then had his disastrous “Well we have a product for offline players, it’s Xbox 360.” in front of Geoff Keighley. It was the quote that went around the world.
- Truth is, Xbox had a nightmare of an E3 week with damaging quotes and incomplete answers.
Also, I’m shocked this video also does not even mention the cloud processed games feature that current Stadia head Phil Harrison was in charge of. The Xbox One was another failure assisted by Harrison and he couldn’t definitely answer how cloud processing would work at the time.
