Tbh these prices is how they justify all this content in base game, I think. This game def wasn’t cheap to make, and the idea that Eddy/Lidia weren’t part of the base game sort of ignores the reality of development or corporate in general. DLC is budgeted for separately with separate timeline and resources than the base game, being worked on concurrently doesn’t mean much.

    • @Timethyclicketh
      @Timethyclicketh 3 месяца назад +11

Locking replay on a paywall is scummy, plus not really interesting characters to begin with (Eddy should have been in base roster, no one plays him much and not worth the money. His trailer views speak volumes, he should have been base, Lidia is alright but we all thought Reina was the new Lidia let's be honest). I'm just not excited for DLC characters. Anna and Miguel are the only tekken original characters from 7 worth DLC I can think of. (And Ak). They could make it interesting by adding obscure characters like they did negan and noctis, like Baki or Rugal, or even adding forgotten characters like Ogre and Jinpachi (Sick!) to generate some hype.

People keep buying their DLC, battle pass, and shop stuff that’s why. They would change if people didn’t buy in on this stuff. In this video even Boogard said he is used to buying the legacy characters. Which is the end goal for all game devs and companies at this point. Once it’s normalized the hole just gets deeper and all people will do is whine and accept it. Like always. 😂

@@Edmitsu that’s disgusting. Besides a few outliers like Tekken and Elden Ring I don’t purchase or play many games anymore since these things are so normalized. Free to play games are also lame and uncreative, obviously made to siphon as much money out their player base instead of offering a genuinely great gaming experience. Hence why most games are incomplete and complete garbage. People still participate and perpetuate this problem, making it the norm, and then complaining about it. Rinse and repeat. Ridiculous.

Devil's advocate here, but when you hold back popular characters like Armor King to release later, it can single-handedly cause a new influx of players to buy or return to the game. It's way more difficult (and expensive) to do that with brand new characters. Not impossible though since they did it with Leeroy in T7.
Akuma brought back a bunch of people to SF6. It nearly beat it's all time high on steam. There was a major balance patch too, but Akuma was the face of the marketing.

I can kind of understand this, even though I've played older fighting games and have recently jumped into newer games now, i can kind of understand why they don't include just most legacy characters, whether it be to make more room for new characters in the series or to give veteran players a reason to look forward to trying the game later. it has its ups and downs. however the replay part is pretty scummy and same with the battle pass (which i bought but only cause you only need to pay for it once and i do see my self playing T8 long term)

Tekken 5 would be locking characters like Kuma, Lee, Lars, ect and having to unlock them. What Tekken had a free update that let you unlock brand new DLC characters? You had to pay full price for Tekken 5 DR just to get 2 (kinda 3) new characters. Imagine having to buy a new version of Tekken 8 at new price just to play Lydia and Eddie. Even then, Tekken 5 DRs only two new characters were unlocked by default iirc. This is not the same thing, dude. If anything it used to be worse. You had to buy a whole different console and game just to play as Lili. You are just asking for the main roster to have characters locked. That's what the old games did, they did not add new characters.

A HUGE part of what made me love video games when i was younger was beating the stories, side quests, mini games, etc. & seeing what i could unlock.
I understand a lot can change in 15 years, but to find out things i considered to be essential video game elements are all money based now & beating games hardly grants you anything truly blew my mind. Imagine my disgust when I found out (because I didn't read the fine print properly) that the only benefit was getting them days "early", even though you really get them on time and everybody else gets them late. I bought the pass because I play a lot and I want to be able to practice against all characters. Season 1 has been the most disappointing in any fighting game. 75 % are non-characters. They didn't have any story in Tekken 7 because they didn't do story for DLC. Nobody knows them and their motives. You had to go online to read to get their story which is pathetic. It's on the same level as Palpatine's speech only being in Fortnite instead of the actual film. Safe to say: I will not be buying the season pass again unless they reveal what I'm buying ahead of time.

DLC characters are a fact of life for fighting games now and it's been that way for nearing a decade. I hate it, but I've begrudgingly accepted it. At least with character releases broken up into "seasons", it means the game will be supported for longer and (assumably) get more content as time goes on. At least as far as Tekken 8 is concerned, I'm pretty happy with the things they're adding for season one. New stages, new modes, and an expansion on the story mode is all things I'm looking forward to. That said, DLC characters should not be 8 bucks, and the whole business with the replays is downright stupid.
What pisses me off most is the unveil of the dailies system and game currency 2-3 months after the game sold, because they KNEW if they bundled that shit into the game at the start, people would've had a problem with it. I'm not going to say I wouldn't have bought the game, but I'd have been much more hesitant.

  • @PositiveBlackSoul
    @PositiveBlackSoul 3 месяца назад +1

I think the pricing sticks out too because on top of being a full price game and DLC characters for eight bucks that you not only need if you want to play them, but also to effectively learn how to beat them the game also has a battlepass with a premium track and microtransactions.
Independent of that I think if DLC characters could be played in Practice Mode and Replay it might actually boost sales as people get to actually demo the character before they have to buy it and it would feel less scummy.

We're all speculating with Eddy was the first DLC, but personally I think Eddy didn't make it into base roster because they didn't have time or resources to finish him in time for launch. Also the fact that the 2nd battlepass hasn't dropped and the 1st one was as terrible as it was for rewards I'm even more convinced the upper management at Bandai Namco forced the T8 devs to include the pass. Also there is absolutely no excuse for them to lock DLCs from practice mode or replay mode, almost all fighting games are guilty of the former but the replay mode is just extra spit in our face.

I’ll add one other point of contention, you can download ghost data from players playing DLC characters and practice that way as well. I don’t have Eddy but one of my buddies does and I’ve been able to play against his ghost. I know it’s not perfect but that’s another way to get playing time against DLC characters.

They both look different enough. Honestly, change the hair and outfit on any female character, it gets hard to tell who it is instantly. This is more a problem with the female faces that you're noticing. They don't look bad, far from it, but they don't have distinct facial features that make them unique from one another. I can't think of one female Tekken character that has sharp facial expressions or even something simple like a slightly bigger nose. There are very subtle differences, but when compared to the differences in male faces it becomes way more apparent how similar all the women can look.

In street fighter characters like M. Bison and Akuma came packaged free in the games for over 30 years until now.
Tekken 8 makes even less sense with very specific characters being kept as dlc when they were free in past games. Makes no sense why Leroy gets to be free when he was dlc in the past but Lydia has to be dlc again even though she was in the exact same position.
Fighting games are going in a very greedy direction. Stop letting your hype overlook very obvious greed guys.

    A few of points
How many hours do you get out of a char?
When you buy qty, costs go down. Same with digital content. When you spend 70-80us they can then give you more as they’ve gotten a bigger commitment and there’s more to work with.
If you’re only gonna spend $4 then a percentage on that is smaller, and some costs to the company will be flat rate no matter what you produce. It’s about economy of scale.
Comparitively yeh, looks bad, but costs go up the more incremental you do updates, which is needed for customer retention these days.
Also, this point may be boring by now but we live in a capitalist society, so they’ll do what makes money, and it’s not a human right to have cheap games.
Also, I run a company that sells stuff and I have customers abuse me over high prices when I’m making 10-20%. But I cut them slack because I know they don’t know the amount of costs that go into running that business. The costs to Bandai Namco may be way more than you think.
Rant over, love your content though and I love Tekken, more Jin tips/tricks videos please hehe
    Peace!

  • @ikaruga24
    @ikaruga24 3 месяца назад +1

I am not quite in agreement of everything you say here. Fighting games are just a different breed of video game and after it was agreed upon that it would be a live update service the costs, just like everything else, went up.
A 32 character actual fighting game (leave Smash out of this, it's not the same) that releases at standard price with all the other additions in all honesty it was just undersold. If you want to learn the match up but don't want to fork in the money to get that character then you will have to learn the old fashioned way by fighting lots against him.
Also, there is a limit of characters that can be added at any one time, it's delusional thinking that the developer will just add all 50+ legacy characters, then add new faces to the roster AND keep a live service with patches, balance changes etc. for the same original £60. I heard people say 'but Tag 2 did it and also did the character customisation of that game'. Yeah well that game was a one and done and didn't need to be supported ever again after and don't have to maintain rollback either nor did it have to be built from the ground up with a completely new engine.
I don't think you understand what kind of complexity a game like Tekken requires and what kind of support is needed in order to maintain this level of polish. It's not going to be a 1:1 ratio. New characters added also means all other characters get to be tampered in some way to accommodate the inclusion of this new character in the existing system. Changes to other characters also must be changed across the board for every other character too in what way they can now behave and strategize. You can't compare directly with the original release and say that each character comes at £4 by comparison.
Yes, there is no denying that the DLCs are expensive for what they seem to be on the surface. Each new addition truly makes a wave that turns into a tsunami of changes that have to be done to the game so considering what is being expected for a high profile fighting game nowdays i don't consider it illogical or greedy that they would ask for £8. Could they ask for £5? Probably. For you as the player £3 is not really anything special but £3 from each player to the company is a significant amount.

The prices are definitely a bit high and the locking replays behind a pay wall is definitely scummy/P2W-ish, but personally i think the roster would have been too bloated if too many legacy characters were added on release, and the game already struggles with some wonky balance due to the new system mechanics, especially on the new characters (looking at you Victor). I think it was smarter to hold back characters like Eddy and Lidia at least, who were considered pretty weak at the end of T7, to hopefully give them the TLC needed to keep up with the current roster and system changes while also making sure they aren't wildly overtuned like Lidia was on release in T7

Bandai-Namco seriously at least needs a trick like that now with all the backlash and if they give at least 1 character for free every year it's still very little. Like Heihachi, Ogre, True Ogre, Kazumi that's like 4 characters for 4 years.
Use the story and incorporate that oh Tekken 8 Ogre is just a flashback or you fight with Young Heihachi vs Ogre. etc..

For work, I found myself having to collaborate with companies involved in video game distribution, and what I discovered, looking at the numbers, is that the classic $70 is no longer remotely sufficient to cover the cost of production and distribution of a video game, especially if it's a game that requires paying for servers, employees, marketing, etc., for years. Most of these companies are therefore forced to sell the base game at a loss or near it, then start making a profit with the sale of DLCs (the argument 70:32=2.18$ doesn't hold up because initially the game is sold at a loss).
Companies are thus faced with a choice: sell the base game at a significantly higher price, lower the initial quality (both of these choices would be disastrous because they would drastically reduce the number of sales), or try to maximize revenues from DLCs.
In essence, if we want a well-made game that lasts for years, given today's costs in creating video games, we have no choice but to accept that the game can only exist because the company planned for certain revenues from DLCs during the initial calculations, even before starting the project.
I still agree with you that not allowing the use of replays for DLC characters is a colossal scam.

I think part of the reason DLC characters are so expensive is that their target audience is inherently small. The only people in the market are those who already own Tekken 8. Only a fraction of those are still playing the game and only a fraction of those will actually buy the DLC. There is just no way of achieving big sales volume so you compensate by driving the price up instead. I'll still contend that Namco have gone too far in that regard, and not being able to lab and take over replays is seriously an insult to the fans of their franchise. The clueless suits in management probably don't understand what that means, though. Besides, they'll be at a different better paid job in different industry in a year, so why would they care...

Also looking at the fact how the story content that they advertise was in the 1.0 version makes me think that season 1 was probably supposed to be in the base roster at one point.
In the case of Lidia it also pisses me off how all over 2021 Murray and the Tekken team hyped her up and was like "oh she will be a big part of the story! Oh we had to do karate again because we're running out of Fighting Styles!"
My last point is that they refuse to show the content that they're selling so you essentially pay for a 40€ gift box whose contents you don't know. I personally want Lei back but most people tell me he will either skip 8 and or be added super late so this just ruins all the hype for potential new characters.

That’s just whatever and not a big deal in my opinion. Example: I love shaheen and raven but most ppl wouldn’t be interested in buying them as dlc b/c they only appeal to certain kind of ppl/enthusiast. Hence why they’re in the baste roster & not dlc

Great video! It does feel like a vicious cycle with the DLC - my favourite character is Anna who I bought in Tekken 7, and will probably have to buy her again in Tekken 8! Its especially iffy when we don't know (aside from leaks) who we might get in the season pass so we might end up buy the pass and not even get a character we like!

Anna was a base roster character in past Tekken games and she was better in Tekken 6 than 7 due to her additional winposes 7 version doesn't have

They should give option to buy dlc character with Tekken coins... Ofc we buy coins with real money 💰 .... It's not fair... Also they should add extra tk coins like fortnite give with battlepass

To be honest, what really bothers me is the characters.
They all existed before, so it’s nothing new.
To me it really feels like they simply cut these characters from the original roster simply to sell them again for an extra buck.
Taking away content for extra money is ridiculous.
Give us Yujiro Hamna, Baki or an actually original character.

I believe not being able to lab against a character in replays is criminal and HOPEFULLY they’ll fix that because I believe the devs genuinely want their player base to grow stronger as fighting game players and to minimize frustration in the learning process. Voice your complaint enough and I know they’ll listen. I honestly kinda understand and expected the increase in price for characters due to graphics increase, new mechanics to each character, new animations, etc. (this is not to say I support the price being what it is). I think we should’ve expected the price to increase but hopefully in the future they’ll lower these prices. On top of that I’m hoping that they do sales somewhat frequently for the dlc.
