Great video! I have fond memories of playing Dr. B back in the day. These two characters getting banned makes me think of the ban on wobbling. At the time, I thought it was a stupid decision. Nerfing a character that was almost a non-presence at major tournaments struck me as just whiny players being whiny. But at the end of the day, a game needs to be fun. I remember there was a lot of talk about Eddy & Christie's b14 in Tekken Tag 2. People defended it by saying that it was possible, with tons and tons of practice against that specific move, it could be overcome. Kind of. But did that make the characters fun to fight against? Or negate the fact that it took almost no effort to cheese b14 combos but tons of effort and concentration to counter them? Maybe not. It's a difficult one. There have been numerous online Keyforge tournaments that banned Heart of The Forest despite many other cards being more powerful, but people just straight up despise that card and the restrictions it forces on both gameplay and deck selection. It doesn't matter how much you can point fingers at people being whiny. If all those people stop playing and the game dies, is that the better outcome?
I think with wobbling, the problem was there was no room for outplay once you got caught in it. But at the higher level most people knew how to work around it. But even then, there’s the famous clip of mew2king getting caught in it at a small tourney, and he looks so absolutely sad lol
The way you tell these stories is absolutely phenomenal. Honestly, i go back and re-watch so many of your videos just to see the funny animations and listen to these great stories told in such an interesting way. You have no idea how many Tekken characters who fit the bill of 'They're not winning, you're just losing' applies to. Hwoarang is one of the the worst characters in T8...if you lab him for 30 hours...
This is true, perhaps I should have elaborated. If you look at characters like Hwoarang, or Ling, they do have VERY high knowledge walls to overcome, but after that point there's still a mind game within their kit. I also don't necessarily find the match ups fun, but there is a more elaborate game that the player imparts onto the character as much as the character imparts onto the player. Once the knowledge check of these characters fades away there's very little going on, which is the problem.
18:47 Generally I agree with the shirt's mindset, but having a pushback on it so it doesn't get out of hand is good, too. The amount of times I've see someone say "git gud" as a catch-all shutdown of even valid criticism is obnoxious. Good vid.

In a sense, I guess they were banned from T3 for the same reason chess tournaments have dress codes. I was a teenager when Tekken 3 was a thing, and it is what got me into the series and one of the games that made me actually devote effort to learning how fighting games worked. Thank you so much for this, I love this video, and how it makes me feel.
Yeah, that part completely baffled me; I couldn't even *begin* to decipher what group or ailment it could even be referring to. Then again, I guess you could argue that's the case for a lot of that kind of terminology.
My favorite quote: "And bending down beside the glowing bars Murmur, a little sadly How Gon fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face Amid a crowd of stars."
"you didn't even know [Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.] existed until just now" me, a SBFP Fan: "Don't cite the deep magic to me, Witch. I was there when it was written."
And yet another example of why you make my favorite FG videos. The research, the editing, and the jokes are just so fucking good, dude. It's also funny as a Soulcalibur fan seeing that Yoda was so clearly better implemented than Gon based on Soulcalibur's actual game design alone.
Eh, his comedy has moved on from going "lol virgin" self deprecation spliced into every 2 minute of a video, but it's not much to write home about ether tbh
@@shaghilathar3588 Literally irrelevant. 15:21 In Tekken you need to "duck" a "high" attack directed at your *shins*. In Soulcalibur when Yoda does a high attack, he very clearly does an attack that hits high. He jumps.
Hey, Leon. Just wanted to say I’ve been watching your stuff ever since the Twelve video, and I’m super impressed by how much your craft has evolved. Keep it up.

In short, Gon is that one MF from Goldeneye 007 that you just hate having to deal with in Multiplayer PvP due to his small size. He's why Smash has a weight class system in the first place as even Sakurai got fed up dealing with characters like Gon in tournaments.
Feeling extremely validated after almost a decade of arguing for the competitive viability of Smash Bros. with people who have likely never known Street Fighter without the Capcom Pro Tour, and appear to assume the CPT emerged fully formed in 1991.
1:39 BALATRO MENTIONED :D awesome video as always... ive been in the "dont really give a fuck about tekken" crowd my entire life but this still kept me engaged all throughout. keep up the good work!!
Whether it comes from a place of salt or not, the fact is that most people just dont think its fun to deal with shit thats designed to annoy you on purpose when trying to play a video game for fun. If I wanted to be upset on purpose, I'd go outside and kick some bricks barefoot. Characters like these are arbitrarily imposed barriers that aren't fun to get over and once you do, the character simply doesn't exist anymore. It's a waste of everyone's (player AND developer) time and energy and was left behind for a reason. It's not like it even does anything for you beyond the game either, there is no "personal development" bs either that comes with the principle of just dealing with it. Its literally just doing homework so that you can get back to playing the game you wanted to play from the start.
This was a funny and good watch, thanks. Funny to see listen about a low tier character being banned simply because they play differently and have a subset of rules/knowledge within the game especially these days considering some of the seemingly broken things fighting game characters can do these days
I know I say this every video, but I REALLY like your animations Leon. You've got like, a good idea of comic timing and composition, and the choice of framerate is *just* janky enough to make them stand out but not unwatchable.
Fantastic. There's already only a few pretty smart reviewers online essentially being the cream of the crop such as Joseph Anderson or Matthew Matosis that, in spite their gaming history, will never in a million years cover fighting games, and especially without even a smidge of the visual effort you now put into your own work. No disrespect to most other game analysts out there, but you're a rarity amongst an already small pool of well spoken, well researched, and well informed people who make some truly finely crafted content. Word salad to hopefully get your attention aside, I love your stuff! I hope to reach a similarly great presentation for my own videos someday. Cheers!
It will forever be odd to me that people believe something being unfun, annoying, or boring to watch are invalid criticisms because they're emotional. You're playing a video game. The logical thing to do is file your taxes for the year but you're a human person so of course how you feel matters.
Great video man! I hope the people from the Classic Tekken Discord server ended up usefull to you in the research and in footage (maybe im wrong but from the gameplay footage maybe its from the matches you had in there with us?). Im the one that just luckly guess that you were working on a Tekken 3 video because of a joke LOL. ps: love the Gon 3D model
After 30 years playing fighting games, and after 3 years taking them more seriously, I can finally accept it: I just can't help myself but love the annoying, absurd characters the most, and I strongly wish to share the experience. If I could do it now, in Tekken 8, I would absolutely try to compete in a tournament with Doctor Boskonovich.
The idea of banning a character for being annoying to fight is really funny considering nowadays we have characters who are built to be annoying to fight. Arakune first and foremost. To answer the question of "Do people come to tournaments for this," the answer really is, "Yeah, somebody does, even if it's not a lot of them."
Tbh, bad moves or characters that just knowledge check the hell out of you and require an unreasonable amount of research and lab time to beat. Is what *all* of tekken feels like to me. Gon is just a exaggerated microcosm of the whole game/series lol
@@shaghilathar3588 no, but technically kinda sorta yes. it depends on how you define knowledge check. most moves, in say street fighter 6 for example, *if you know the core system mechanics of the game* are very intuitive and readable. So you don't have to have any specific knowledge or lab work to deal with them. just know that blocking exists and grabs lose to jump etc. tekken though..... i mean i think you know. shit is so hard to read what does what, on too of having unholy movelist lengths. it's knowledge check city
A 3D inversion of a "Puppet" fighter mixed with Pokemon's "God-Tier Stats, Incredibly Limiting Ability" (Archeops, Slaking, Regigigas) where the main Fighter-Proxy is incredibly busted but is balanced by having to manage the position of Dr. B, who is always on the field and if hit takes WAY more damage than the proxy-fighter
I agree with your final sentiment that if Gon was ever banned on a large scale, it's likely the simple reason that a character that by design invalidates half of a character's toolkit because they low-profile everything without trying is just not very fun to fight against or watch. He just slows the game down and forces much less engaging interactions, because Gon sucks balls and characters can't play to their strengths.

"you didn't even know [Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.] existed until just now"
me, a SBFP Fan: "Don't cite the deep magic to me, Witch.
Hitboxes in soul calibur are much bigger and a characters range doesn't depend on their limbs
He jumps.
@@spiffythealien Yeah can you name a high that hits your shins?
This hit my algorithm and just want to comment to boost it and say this was an excellent video. Love the editing style!!!
7:49 "You didn't know this game existed until now"
*laughs and cries in Super Best Friends Play*
Hey, Leon. Just wanted to say I’ve been watching your stuff ever since the Twelve video, and I’m super impressed by how much your craft has evolved. Keep it up.
You're right, I'm not putting Chun li Figures into jars. Im putting Marissa figures into jars.
Having your videos in the background makes studying so much more relaxing
Man, I would've watched this video even if it was just game clips and site screenshots but the editing here made this such a nice experience, easily worth recommending and coming back too 😁
I was not expecting an Akatsuki Blitzkampf reference 0:52 seconds in but I do appreciate it. I've only played Akatsuki Blitzkampf Ausf Achse and am a Marylin Sue main but that game goes crazy. It's insanely good.
Spam Gon's fart on my sibling was my whole childhood
Edit: Yep! i hate myself. Yep! it's not about Gon's winning, it's about other losing.
In short, Gon is that one MF from Goldeneye 007 that you just hate having to deal with in Multiplayer PvP due to his small size. He's why Smash has a weight class system in the first place as even Sakurai got fed up dealing with characters like Gon in tournaments.
gon was unironically my favorite character in t3 and i wish he'd get brought back for t8
The animations and 3D spaces are great. Awesome video!
Every single video of yours I see I keep being further impressed by your amazing editing! Fantastic work!
I miss joke characters. Everything has to be an esport now
Wow; the editing on the KBD section! And I didn't know about the nitty gritties of the gameplay of these two. Thanks for sharing! Great video!
Cant believe you balatro wheel of fortune noped me within the first 2 minutes, I HAVE PTSD MAN YOU CANT JUST FLASH THAT
Feeling extremely validated after almost a decade of arguing for the competitive viability of Smash Bros. with people who have likely never known Street Fighter without the Capcom Pro Tour, and appear to assume the CPT emerged fully formed in 1991.
1:39 BALATRO MENTIONED :D
awesome video as always... ive been in the "dont really give a fuck about tekken" crowd my entire life but this still kept me engaged all throughout. keep up the good work!!
7:30 Legend Of Mana music? Good taste as always Leon
Peak Leon Massey talking about Peak Tekken? Truly a great evening
What a great 20 minute video that I definitely sat through all of. That one part, where you said the thing? Egad!
I really love editing and production value on this video. Great job!
welcome back to your channel Leon massive
THE GLORIOUS EGG MAN IS BACK
Banning something that is annoying? Yep, that sounds like fighting game communities.
leon massey videos are always worth the wait
i'm such a layton fan, I instantly recognised the song used. HUge W Leon. I love it when you add layton music to your vids
I think you snuck in a really good summary right at the end. The duality of the word "uncompetitive".
You put WAY too much effort into this video and it's animations and I love every second of it.
I think another reason is cuz someone using a joke character just turns the set into a one-sided stomp that just wastes everyone's time
I remember using Gon to beat the beat-em-up mode for Tekken 3
This was a funny and good watch, thanks. Funny to see listen about a low tier character being banned simply because they play differently and have a subset of rules/knowledge within the game especially these days considering some of the seemingly broken things fighting game characters can do these days
I know I say this every video, but I REALLY like your animations Leon. You've got like, a good idea of comic timing and composition, and the choice of framerate is *just* janky enough to make them stand out but not unwatchable.
Great video! Well written and cool editing. I have never actually seen that basement stage in Tekken 3 before! :o
I need to play Doctor B so bad now. He looks like everything ive ever wanted
In short, Xiaoyu should be banned from ranked and tournament play.
Gods, your editing style? Closest to divinity our world will likely see. Your voiceover is well accompanying it as well.
Every time I think I can't love you more, you do something like throw a balatro reference in
I'm surprised to not see Smash discourse over Minecraft Steve in the comments. Sure, comp Smash is unpopular, but the audience sure is loud...
Honestly I think most people are tired of crying about him at this point
16:22 "thinking he's always crushing highs, but he's not", showing Gon eating a mid wind god fist for illustration 😂
Isn't every move a knowledge check in any game until you know how to deal with it?
@@shaghilathar3588 no, but technically kinda sorta yes. it depends on how you define knowledge check.
most moves, in say street fighter 6 for example, *if you know the core system mechanics of the game* are very intuitive and readable. So you don't have to have any specific knowledge or lab work to deal with them. just know that blocking exists and grabs lose to jump etc.
tekken though..... i mean i think you know. shit is so hard to read what does what, on too of having unholy movelist lengths. it's knowledge check city
@@SuperLemonfish Yep that's fair
omfg hiw was that N64 fighting game at 0:48 called again?
childhood memory unlocked oO
Amazing video dude, hope you're doing well. The production quality is awesome.
I just wanted to say that I see the incredible editing haha, I see you. Great work as usual!
I would do unspeakable things to Harada if they gave us DLC Dr B in tekken 8 where he's got like bionic legs and arms or something
If the other fighter hits a position-swapping move on the proxy, Dr. B is in for a world of hurt lol. I'd love to see that new doctor
Me and the rest of DSP-gang won't take this slander lying down.
Unlike Dr.B
Only tekken players will ban a character who is a hard meta counter and then call it bottom tier.
Hell yeah, I've been loving Tekken 8 and it's been a long day at work. A Tekken video from you is like a miracle lol
Your editing has become absolutely godlike!
7:51 I fuckin love this game just for the maximillian dood boss rush, one of my favorite videos on the platform
