I don't think people give this game enough credit for having WAY more franchise variety compared to Capcom's SNK crossovers like Mars People from Metal Slug, classic Athena, a ghost and goblins enemy, Tessa from Red Earth and Mega Man Zero alongside making the bold choice of choosing Dimitri over Morrigan including his Midnight Bliss form
Facts! Thanks to this game I discovered Shiki and Tessa and now I am a fan of them 😊 The roster of SVC Chaos is a great example of quality over quantity 👍 I want a SVC2 instead of a CVS3
@@gipgap4Pretty much this. That and the artstyle for the cutscenes are easily the best about this game overall. Almost everything else ranges from mediocre to bad unfortunately.
Here's a fun factoid worth bringing up regarding this game's development: Falcoon (one of the SNK artists) stated at Twitter back in 2017 that *Dante (from the Devil May Cry series)* was among the planned playable characters during SvC Chaos' early stages of production but he eventually got ditched out. Side note, the pixel artist who was initially assigned to work on Dante eventually did Demitri.
In the 90s it was a company with an incredible artistic sense and level of talent (imo better than Capcom in that aspect) and with an incomparable creative energy, but those elite artists were always badly managed by the businessmen. And it's interesting to note that even the ambitious KOF 13, no matter how wonderful the game is, also shows the SNK's mistake of betting too hard on very expensive 2d assets right in the ps3 gen. Which put the company in real trouble afterwards. SNK always neglected serious investment in 3d tech since the 90s and we can notice in the way their 3d projects always looking poor compared to contemporaries made by competitors with higher 3d skills: FF Wild Ambition vs T3, KOF Maximum Impact vs T5 and SC3... finally leading to the current sitaution where SNK's games look a generation behind the competitors. That bad decision is still affecting the company today, and today there's no other way but 3d. So even if SNK still has some elite og devs, those 2d skills dont count anymore. There's a lot going against the company.
i still don't buy it because in the game they all seem like they're going about their own business (Chun-Li is the one example that sticks out more to me, i mean, look at her pre-fight interactions and ending).
In the first half I thought "this just looks like the typical SNK art style; if people didn't like it, doesn't it mean these were people who just didn't like SNK's art style?" And then the four buttons thing was brought up as the very first point in the gameplay discussion... and now it really sounds like the primary factor was that people who didn't like it mostly just didn't like SNK games.
It is speculated this game was already in development before SNK's bankruptcy, so when they came back they just dusted off what was already done, made some adjustments and released it to make a very needed quick buck.
A lot of features like light flickering off the characters where used in both versions. Showing they wanted to keep up with Capcoms features. The cast is an obvious change from Capcoms. Like Demitri over Morrigan, Geontiz over Rugal Evil Ken over Evil Ryu and Genji of Haroumaru. A special chip was even required for one background. So much of the development was clearly after. Remember they put out a KoF for 10 years straight. They made those games quickly back then.
@@thomasbeall9069 SNK died in 00 and stopped making games, and officially closed in 01, so that part about making KOF for 10 years straight is off. The last games of the original SNK were in 00 and the rights of franchises like KOF and MSlug ended up with a corean company that made KOF 01, 02 and MSlug 4. Then SNK returned in 02-03 and released this SVCC and KOF 03. And we must not forget that the new SNK lost talents after the closing of the original. Like Oda, the main dev behind Garou MOTW, that went to Dimps and stayed there, and eventually became the gameplay designer of SF4, and only after that work he returned to SNK to made these recent games since KOF 14. And the iconic artist Shinkiro, that was doing artwork since FF1 and defined the company's art style, went to Capcom (he was already out of SNK in the time of CvS2). So SNK literally was just restarting and not in a good shape. Maybe that was the reason why SNK stayed with the Neogeo for a little longer, since the ideal way was switching to a modern hardware. Even Capcom switched for MvC2 and CvS1-2.
The Capcom character design in this game looked more KOF 2002-ish than KOF 99-ish which means that's not true, and if you don't know what I'm talking about, compare Kim's animations in 2002 to those of 99.
Oh, THIS is the game that Zero sprite came from! That's existed in the corner of my mind since the Spriter's Resource days. For good reason, this art is a weird kind of gorgeous.
Omg Neo Geo Battle Coliseum mentioned, that game so goat, exactly what I once thought SNK would do with the KoF series if they decided to go crazy with its crossover aspect instead of making it just another fg that includes Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting and little more games (not a complain tho, KoF is still one of my fav fg series ever). I would completely lose it of SNK just makes a sequel to that game, maybe using an assist system just like KoF's striker system from the NESTS saga or idk
Couple things worth noting from the SNK nerd side : While the grim stages are all this game's own, the "more realistic artstyle" is more or less because that's mostly what the KOF sprite artstyle was throughout the NEOGEO era, pretty much anyone who was in any of the NESTS era games in these besides Kyo swapping back to the classic uniform are all using their sprites from those games. Balrog's not the only trace job here. All the shotos looking... strange is because they seem to be using the original sf2 shoto sprites as a base, complete with their weirdly bent legs. Also Hugo for his SF3 sprites, which is why he's noticeably larger than the other SF characters than he was in those games thanks to the scaling carrying over. Funny enough, as far as I can recall hearing, it was actually Capcom as the iniator on this game, as apparently the deal had included both sides making at least X number of games, they got mad SNK apparently hadn't matched them on that end as per the deal, and then immediately marched over as soon as they reformed post bankruptcy, and demanded the final game from their side. Given the already stressful circumstances they were already under, this apparently did a good deal to re-sour the relationship between the 2 companies for at least the next decade or so.
Chun Li was also traced from her 3s sprite lol and here's something for your last statement, I remember reading on an old EN Neo-Geo forum from one of the California loke tests that one of the members attended that when they asked a rep, the game was basically being released as a way to fulfil contractual obligations. That's some additional anecdotal evidence to what you heard.
With that knowledge, it sounds their initial plans were ambitious before being shelved to get the game out faster. Angel Torres joked that SNK "stole" Rage of the Dragon's Tag Battle mechanics for KOF 2003, so that idea (in the vein of MvC's real-time switching) was still new and exciting enough for Playmore that the staff used it elsewhere as an experiment. 2021KDuck, the same guy who found Garou 2's sprites, discovered sprite sheets and concept art by Falcoon from the earliest version of SvC, speculated to be a "doujin game" with findings of a "Gekka" system, as per the listed roster. *K' & Alex* *Quan and Akira* *Athena & Poison* *Ralf & Zangief* *Urien & Kim* *Hinako & Honda* *Iori & Morrigan* *Rugal* It's unclear when this might've been. Garou 2's sprites were dated April 2001 and Playmore was founded August 2001, so either that project was fresh on the minds of those within the company or someone in particular liked Quan and wanted to repurpose her. Rage of the Dragons released in June 2002, so it's possible this could have been anywhere from Late 2001 to Mid 2002 that the team brainstormed and played around with a test build before ditching the concept altogether and shifting focus to a standard 1v1 fighter as the pressure of the contract breathed down their necks. Alas, the piracy that impeded RotD's sales (all profits were used to pay back its debt) appears to have be the same problem that plagued SvC: Chaos. @@CoolGuyZool129 It was on record that MOTW2 and SVCC were being worked on before SNK 1.0's bankruptcy as told by SNK Playmore then-president Koichi Toyama in 2003. The April 2001 build date for MOTW2 is very likely what they had on hand at the time of closing when SNK 1.0 formally closed their doors on April 2, 2000. Evoga (2000-2004) concept for RotD was very likely done earlier in 2001 after the bulk of the work was done for BrezzaSoft's 2001 release Evolution Soccer was finished. Then Noise Factory (1998-2017) took all concepts Evoga created and turned it into a game since they are credited for the programming, music and art & sprite work. This might be relevant too since Capcom at the time typically did 2-on-2 VS fighting games: Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom 1 and the later canceled 2003 Capcom Fighting All-Stars all had real-time switching. I wouldn't be surprised if SNK at the time knew on some level that CFAS was going to be a 2-on-2 tag fighter due to friendships and employees jumping between both companies all the time since CFAS was reportedly in development for 2 years until it was cancelled in 2003.
I have to commend SNK for making a better parody of themselves than Capcom could with Dan. They gave him two new moves, one is the Haoh Shoukou Ken motion, where Dan prepares a huge fireball that lets out a big wave that moves as far as his already pathetic gadokens. The second is a huge charged punch that's unblockable, when it hits, Dan dislocates his arm. He turns away from the camera, fixes his arm and turns back to the camera, giving a thumbs up. Still makes me smile every time I see it.
NGL I really like the proportions on the SVC Chaos sprites - always felt like an attempt to go back to the vanilla SF2, rather than do Alpha's look like most of the other versus games
It's fascinating to think that the whole Capcom-SNK crossover bookends with games made by the latter. The SvC Chaos iterations of Geese, Goenitz & Orochi Iori were backported into the PS2 port of KOF '02, and for some reason that was enough for the former two to be added in the UM ver. as bonus characters as well. Most of the non-KOF characters from the SNK side here (Genjuro, Shiki, goddess Athena & Mars People) were also given another chance to shine in NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, which is a game that's worth covering another time.
There were actually remnants of Orochi Iori left in KOF 2002 UM's data and can be accessed through hacking, however, due to such circumstance -- he's quite barebones to use.
Off-topic, but it's both funny and sad how the two times Demitri was in a fighting game crossover without Morrigan in it (this game and Capcom Fighting Jam) ended up being some of the most despised games in the genre. Dude can't catch a break.
@@austinreed7343This is a weird comparison even if I guess I can see why you're making it. Demitri isn't romantically interested in Morrigan though. He's only "interested" in her in the sense of dethrone her as the demom world's de facto queen after her father, his initial rival, died/disappeared long after banishing Demitri to Earth for an attempted coup.
@@austinreed7343 No, I got that much, and I unfortunately agree. I just thought you were saying Demitri is a romance stalker since you brought up the now "canceled" Pepe Le Pew. Hence my confusion.
Dan's SVC version deserves more appreciation even in gameplay aspect because SNK wanted to explore his comedy attributes and went a long way further than Capcom's versions of Dan at the moment, when he was still too much based on the SFA versions. Actually Capcom's best version of Dan (in the classic era) in the sense of expanding his comedy attributes is MvSF, because of the addition of the autograph move and his own "Raging Demon". Then SNK made many brand new jokes for him making him infinitely superior to the CvS version. That was only surpassed by the SF4 version, that pushed his comedy attributes to a much higher level, that makes almost everything from the past obsolete. Note: Dan from Pocket Fighter technically would be the best, but it doesnt count here because the whole game is meant to be comedic. It's an unfair to compare to normal games.
I also love how they took him being an SNK parody further by giving him nerfed versions of Ryo's signature moves that he didn't have before (the "Ichigeki hissatsu" punch that breaks his hand on hit is gold). And his taunt super also incorporates some new taunts from other characters like Joe Higashi, and the rest of Yuri's taunts besides the thumbs up pose. Though, the Match of the Millennium version of this super is still the best one yet (look it up if you haven't seen it).
I was at the test held in so cal by Playmore back in 2003. I think there are photos of the event on the neo-geo forums. I remember playing it and feeling the mechanics were “off”. Many of the attendees felt lukewarm to it as well, but remained positive. I remember loving how they did Demitri, Shiki and Tessa. I also remember being in awe seeing the Hugo sprite on the neo (besides Earthquake). Thanks for the video, this brought back a lot of memories.❤
Interestingly enough, the Xbox version of SvC Chaos had an entirely different announcer, whose voice is akin to the one from KOF '94 Re-Bout and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
I remember seeing this game online early on and thinking the roster was really cool but had no idea why no one ever talked about it. This video was really interesting!
I like the character art style because it's coherent, consistent and feels unique CvS2 just reuses a bunch of sprites (looking at you Morrigan), so it looks cheap and clashes a lot
Alot of the sprites look better in CvS2. Terry, Vega, M.Bison (he's not bloated anymore), Geese, Mai, Maki, Kyosuke translated nicely, Akuma (all versions). Idk what you've been looking at but it sometimes makes sense to reuse the previous sprites. I doubt you explored the full roster.
@@willdiesel8431 I did "explore the whole roster", and I think some of it looks cheap and clashes with the rest of the game (the Alpha sprites with the SF3 sprites, etc), and that's my personal opinion, you think differently, good for you
@Sorrelhas yeah ok big fella. You don't know what you're talking about since none of the SF3 reps are rendered in that style with CvS2. So your opinion based on a misunderstanding or just ignorance.
Yun has new sprites, not his SF3 sprites. All of the newly sprited characters in CvS2 look amazing, but characters like Dan and Morrigan definitely clash with the new, higher quality assets.
@@willdiesel8431 I see what he's saying though. We can be honest and see that while some of the characters had some work done to them to make them look different/better, some others look like just straight reused assets. It's fine to call them as we see them.
I do have a soft spot for SVC. I was glad to hear you pointing out that a lot of the choices made were done to distinguish it from CVS1/2, from the cast choices to the mood and probably even the unified no-groove-selection system. The game does feel half baked but in a way so did CVS1, and I think a sequel to SVC could have made it as beloved as CVS2. And in a way SVC2 does exist in the form of Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, which builds on a lot of the stuff SVC did (similar movement, whiffable throws, and the same guard-cancel dash mechanic, even most of the SNK cast that can't normally appear in a KOF showed up for it with reused sprites etc.) and NGBC is great.
The comparison of CvS1 and CvS2 to SVC and NGBC in terms of fully realizing a game's mechanics in a sequel is one I wish I had thought of for this video. Great point!
This game is a cursed masterpiece and I love it to death. Serious Mr Karate is a walking AoF reference (one of his winposes and quotes reference his original winquote as well as the 3 Bonus Games) It takes place in purgatory and your actions send you to heaven or hell... The amount if weird details is hilarious
How have I never clocked that Balrog sprite being a Heavy D trace over lmao But yeah, Demitri has never looked as cool as he does in SvC Chaos. The promo art for him is probably my single favorite bit of character art from the game.
That explain the proportions, sure (funny enough, they traced Ryu and Ken sprite from their SFII sprites rather than Alpha or 3 since those were the ones with the less exaggerated proportions). But they also definitely have a darker shade even compared to SNK usual sprites. Even the NEST era KoF (which were the latest KoF at the time this game was developed and possibly the reason why they were darker at the time) were less brown and Grey than that. this one reminds me a little bit of Daraku Tenshi (only a little, to be clear, SvC isn't that dark either).
CVS2 gets a ton of praise for its aesthetics despite the fact that the majority of the Capcom cast are reusing alpha sprites that do not blend very well with the updated "CVS Style" spritework. Game looks great when you got Maki or Kyosuke fighting the rival company, but it looks low budget when Morrigan or Sagat was on the screen. Those sprites date back to early CPS2 titles. At least the SNK style sprites look consistent. You could throw the Capcom cast into an old-school KOF game with a little touch up work.
I like this game mostly because the roster is kind of unique. You Zero from Megaman Zero, not the X version, You also get to play Tesa from Red Earth. You can even play as one of the Aliens from Metal Slug, and even Athena from the original game, not the one from Psycho Warriors King of Fighters.
SNK tried to give some attention to Tessa in 03, a time Capcom already gave up promoting her. I always thought she could have been a nice MvC char if Capcom wanted. Right after Red Earth (96), Capcom tried promoting Tessa to join the group of "Capcom girls" as we see in Pocket Fighter (97), but that interest disappeared fairly quickly later. So Red Earth ended up a failure and even failed to "export" chars to incorporate the company's legacy... In the sense that Darkstalkers failed but some chars became preserved thanks to constant appearances in crossovers. And very tragically, the last opportunity to promote Red Earth was Capcom Fighting Jam, probably the company's most shameful fg project.
@@carlosaugusto9821 They did occasionally get referenced as endings or alternate costumes after CFJ, at least. And heck, there’s recently been the Capcom Fighting Collection.
It always seemed interesting to me how out of all the Fighting Game Crossovers between these two, SvC Chaos is the one where the roster DOES FEEL like SNK vs Capcom proper as opposed to mostly SF vs KoF
Every capcom vs games feels like street fighter games with guest character, just like tekken with guest character, in SVC Chaos....it doesnt feels like KOF or SF, it's just pure CHAOS 🤣
Can't wait to play it for the first time! Ive never even heard of it until the EVO announcement! Hoping for CVS as well! I also cant wait for MVC collection too!

Admittedly the ryu and ken sprites do look a little robotic but I'll be damned if this game doesn't animate some characters spectacularly, like Demitri and Marspeople have some of the greatest animated sprites i've ever seen in a video game
I always like this game since the 2000s. I remember importing the EU version for the PS2 because I didn't own an Xbox at the time. I like it for being different.
The funny thing about the multi hit decay is I saw a Violent Ken combo and after the first few hits the combo did absolutely no damage, but as soon as he did a super in the end, the opponent died immediately with a full health bar (full red). Also this games weird jank animations is the biggest gripe I have. You can definitely tell SNK was on its last legs when they made this game and it’s sad to see because I appreciate their more gritty designs for the Capcom characters
I don't know why but there's something about this game weird aesthetic that I love. The sprites of the characters to me all look incredible and some of the music tracks are stuck in my head forever and even if playing it really feels weird and the busted AI doesn't make it fun in slightest, I can't help but having a weird appreciation for this game.
This game is why I'd rather have SvC3 than CvS3. CvS2 had its time in the spotlight, and I'd rather see SNK get the chance to make another crossover and do it right this time, with the grandiosity that only Saudi blood money can buy.
Dude, I have always thought SVC Chaos looks BADASS. It's probably my favorite looking fighter of that era, and it's still one of my fave looking even today. Seeing Capcom characters get "SNK-ized" was/is sick!!
I literally ran into an SVC Chaos cab a few weeks ago on a trip I went on and I'm kicking myself I didn't have enough time to check it. Really rare you can find actual arcade games like that in the average modern day arcade
the Las Vegas Gameworks used to have an SvC cabinet with this bright red sticker on it that said "MUST BE 16+ TO PLAY." In hindsight, the SvC cab was right next to the iconic Quan Chi's Face MK4, so the hapless attendant probably just put the sticker on the wrong cab by mistake, but this was in the slightly earlier internet stage where there wasn't extensive RUclips and wiki coverage of every game known to man, and I was like 8, so I spent most of my teens thinking SvC had some secret code where Mai shows her tiddies or smth
I had no idea this game wasn't well liked. Never noticed anything ''wrong'' with it, at least in the gameplay department (aside from some jank here and there, like most of the fighting games from the era). Ironically, Capcom vs SNK 2 feels more like a bootleg than SVC does in my opinion. To me, it wasn't that different to playing a MUGEN game, lol.
SVC Chaos came out at a time when both 2D fighters and new arcades were in a serious decline (here in England at least) , so seeing this game in the wild at an arcade in Tottenham court road in London in 2003 was a genuinely exciting surprise (i remember texting friends about it and everything lol ) . I was more hyped by the existence of the game rather than the game it self ( which was okay , but not amazing ). I would have loved to have seen a sequel to the game that expanded on the foundations of the first game and included even more great SNK interpretations of Capcom characters but it wasn't meant to be. Ah well . Great video GWQ
The roster of SVC Chaos is the definition of 'quality over quantity'. That is the main reason why I like this game. I am not a fan of how safe the rosters of the CVS games are. To see the same classic/popular faces all the time is boring In fact, that is something I really like about the fighting games in the SNK Playmore era. KOF 2003, KOF XI, KOF MIA and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum have amazing rosters because the choices were very strange and unique.
This was downplayed over the post-Playmore days, though we still get a few weird deep cuts here and there, nowadays it’s mostly due to fan demand rather than a conscious choice to add weirdness.
The "quality" aspect isn't there. Lol did you hear those sfx on block AND hit? If the only thing you can look to is the roster which isn't that unique then partake in theory fighter. Leave the real fighting games to those who can recognize them.

I really like the soundtrack of SVC Chaos 🎵 I like atmospheric music in fighting games, same reason why I like the soundtracks in Tekken 2, Tekken 4, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Ninja Master's, etc.
I feel like the backgrounds must have been repurposed from another game. They have a very muted & strange feeling to them. Maybe that's what they were going for?
It was done at a time when the Zero serie was still ongoing, and the X serie was entering it's lackluster era (This game released the same month as X7 IIRC). That might be one of the reasons they went with this appearance.

SVC Chaos >>> CVS2
I don't think people give this game enough credit for having WAY more franchise variety compared to Capcom's SNK crossovers like Mars People from Metal Slug, classic Athena, a ghost and goblins enemy, Tessa from Red Earth and Mega Man Zero alongside making the bold choice of choosing Dimitri over Morrigan including his Midnight Bliss form
Not a big fan of SVC however the franchise variety it offers is it's biggest advantage over CVS which is basically Street Fighter vs SNK.
Facts!
Thanks to this game I discovered Shiki and Tessa and now I am a fan of them 😊
The roster of SVC Chaos is a great example of quality over quantity 👍
I want a SVC2 instead of a CVS3
Character variety was great, gameplay not so much.
its kinda sad when capcoms own crossover fighting games don't include red earth, a fucking fighting game
@@gipgap4Pretty much this. That and the artstyle for the cutscenes are easily the best about this game overall. Almost everything else ranges from mediocre to bad unfortunately.

I think the snk be Capcom on the neo geo pocket might or is better than this…and I play that off my steam deck and sometimes connected to a 4K tv….
I was about to say that.
Dante was the new hotness in the 2000's.
2D Sprite Dante?
That's fascinating to consider.
Wow, seriously that would have been awesome honestly
@@isumairu25likewise, lol
the thing is, i can't even decide if he would be SSS-tier or a low-mid tier (like most of this game's bosses, lol)
SNK's natural state is entering bankruptcy or bankrupt.
Schrodinger's Bankruptcy.
SNK is neither bankrupt or going bankrupt until observed.
it's my natural state too honestly tbh.
Yoo it's the guy I walked past at PAX East and was too scared to talk too
And I presume their current state is "figuring out a way to go bankrupt". No luck yet.
It’s so jarring that SVC Chaos’ story is literally just *the world is destroyed, everyone is dead*
then MMZ-era Zero fits right in.
i still don't buy it because in the game they all seem like they're going about their own business (Chun-Li is the one example that sticks out more to me, i mean, look at her pre-fight interactions and ending).
That 's what makes it unique and special, not every fg has to have a tournament and i hope that dark vibe was used more often
It's the last Capcom and SNK universe title, at the moment.
that explains why the levels are so...... eerie and empty
Good news, you may now try it out yourself to find out what folks were on about.
As a distributor of this title. Work did not start until 2002 on it. The Development budget was only $150,000.
Oh, THIS is the game that Zero sprite came from! That's existed in the corner of my mind since the Spriter's Resource days. For good reason, this art is a weird kind of gorgeous.
I agree. I like the sprite design aside from some of the weird traces
Gameplay aside, the fact that you could have Ryu fight Gouki/Akuma on an MVS would explode people's minds if you time-traveled back to 1994.
What's funny is the follow-up "Self vs. Self" titles are the other way around. NG Battle Coliseum is kickass but Capcom Fighting Jam is gross.
Indeed, CFJ has the worst elements of CvS cranked up to become blatant flaws; especially given representation.
To be fair to Capcom, I think their Versus games kinda compensate for Fighting Jam being ass.
It's awesome seeing anothyer Neo Geo Battle Colosseum enjoyer around! Game's a real hidden gem that deserves more credit
Mizuchi supremacy
Couple things worth noting from the SNK nerd side :
While the grim stages are all this game's own, the "more realistic artstyle" is more or less because that's mostly what the KOF sprite artstyle was throughout the NEOGEO era, pretty much anyone who was in any of the NESTS era games in these besides Kyo swapping back to the classic uniform are all using their sprites from those games.
*K' & Alex*
*Quan and Akira*
*Athena & Poison*
*Ralf & Zangief*
*Urien & Kim*
*Hinako & Honda*
*Iori & Morrigan*
*Rugal*
It's unclear when this might've been.

@@CoolGuyZool129 who is Quan & Akira ?
I have to commend SNK for making a better parody of themselves than Capcom could with Dan. They gave him two new moves, one is the Haoh Shoukou Ken motion, where Dan prepares a huge fireball that lets out a big wave that moves as far as his already pathetic gadokens. The second is a huge charged punch that's unblockable, when it hits, Dan dislocates his arm. He turns away from the camera, fixes his arm and turns back to the camera, giving a thumbs up. Still makes me smile every time I see it.
Then later Dan got the Haoh Shoukouken in Super SFIV.
Funniest part is that the unblockable punch is unsafe on hit, but hey it can block Firebrand's otherwise unblockable dive super
And the taunt super was expanded with original references to Joe and Yuri
NGL I really like the proportions on the SVC Chaos sprites - always felt like an attempt to go back to the vanilla SF2, rather than do Alpha's look like most of the other versus games
Fatal Fury style
Heard of Falcoon after playing kof2k1. Really dig his art style in that game.
Exactly
@@UltraZeroX7 Same thing happened with K9999

Praise be the seiyuu Nobuyuki Hiyama for doing double duty (announcer and Demitri voice)
Off-topic, but it's both funny and sad how the two times Demitri was in a fighting game crossover without Morrigan in it (this game and Capcom Fighting Jam) ended up being some of the most despised games in the genre. Dude can't catch a break.
Plus given what happened with Pepe Le Pew, and the inactivity of Darkstalkers, I don’t think he’ll ever be in a crossover again even with Morrigan.

Dan's interactions are worth an entire video all on their own; there's so much comedy and in-jokes that are a joy to see.
Don't forget Hugo(Poison) interractions lol

It's not the shading, it's SNK sprite style that has always been more realistic compared to SF's anime exaggerated style.
This game looks drab compared to any SNK counterpart featuring the same line up of characters.
Realism has nothing to do with it.

I dug SVC Chaos when I first played it in the arcade. I still dig it today.

We did get violent ken.
And yes we do fight him.
SNK JUST TOOK A GOLD COVERED SHIT ON YOUR VIDEO! ! ! !
People like weird crap. Doesn't really count unless you own the game though.

Poor sales, poor reviews, bad sound design....game is trash
I had no idea this game wasn't well liked. Never noticed anything ''wrong'' with it, at least in the gameplay department (aside from some jank here and there, like most of the fighting games from the era).
Ironically, Capcom vs SNK 2 feels more like a bootleg than SVC does in my opinion.
To me, it wasn't that different to playing a MUGEN game, lol.
Sagat just turned into Fakhumram in this
“Cap off the new millennium” bruh you cap off the last millennium, not the next.
To see the same classic/popular faces all the time is boring
In fact, that is something I really like about the fighting games in the SNK Playmore era.
@@willdiesel8431 Bro is just replying to every remotely positive comment about this game
If SVC Chaos has a million haters, you're one of them
If SVC Chaos has just ONE hater, you're that hater
Like bro just stop lmao
@cptwigglefuffle you following me? Why do you care that I hate the game, if other people have to lie about it? Don't worry I'll wait.
@cptwigglefuffle and since you care about what if scenarios, what other games just get by on their roster, Cpt.riddler?
Riddle me that. I await your answer since you have the time to follow me. Hop off my wood and go find the answer to the above question.
I really like the soundtrack of SVC Chaos 🎵
I like atmospheric music in fighting games, same reason why I like the soundtracks in Tekken 2, Tekken 4, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Ninja Master's, etc.
I feel like the backgrounds must have been repurposed from another game. They have a very muted & strange feeling to them. Maybe that's what they were going for?
Waddup Kenny!
I love how they used the Mega Man Zero design for Zero in this game.
It was done at a time when the Zero serie was still ongoing, and the X serie was entering it's lackluster era (This game released the same month as X7 IIRC). That might be one of the reasons they went with this appearance.
More than that it *is* that version. He talks to Ciel, uses the triple rod, and cyber elfs.
Game has better reps then previous titles behind.
Not really. Just more obscure.
@@willdiesel8431 yes really. It wasn’t just full on SF VS Snk. Also people like megaman zero were far from obscure. He’s was fully active. Demitri was a breathe of fresh air, & Tessa was a nice addition well for many.
Good job naming 2 or 3 characters that don't necessarily mean better. Idk what to say about you and those like you who not only think Red Earth characters need to be playable in a crossover affair but somehow think they are better than the likes of proven fan favorites. SvC blows.
@@willdiesel8431 I was only naming the Capcom side. Just because I said what was said about red earth doesn’t mean I needed them in it. Clearly just a guess. Point is these reps were better because they weren’t sf characters. No how much obscure they were. Sf characters maybe popular but doesn’t mean A lot are needed. Only the important ones. No point in calling it Capcom Vs Snk if you only have sf characters and like 3 non sf characters.
@silentman99 the ones added are the usual suspects. The game can be called whatever the developers see fit and clearly the Capcom side uses the characters that are somehow tied into the SF universe. At any rate that doesn't mean the game is worse for not including whatever they could from the SNK side.
Did you care that Fio was in KoF 2006 (Max Impact 2)? Does that change your opinion of the game? Oh i think Hanzo was in their too, must be GoTY.
I always loved the art style of this game, which made me enjoy playing it as someone who knew nothing of fighting games.
The intro of SVC Chaos is incredible to look at. The graphics and presentation is well made. Despite with its flaws. This is the game where Akuma jumped all the way to heaven, and fought God.
Or punched and cracked the Earth to beat someone from hell.
WE ARE SO BACK
SNK with it's marketing decisions makes SEGA look smart.
A certain game came back
Having this show up in the algorithm after the announcement is crazy
SVC Chaos is still being played on Fightcade tournaments, so there is that.
I always, and will always, love this game. The asthetic, the OST, the sprites, the mechanics. Everything. I just like the gritty feel it all has
Am i the only crazy person that loves this game? And i actually love snk take on capcom sprites.
Maybe its a matter of taste but i do think the shotos look great in snk style sprites. Im not trying to be a contrarian. I know this game didnt do well because of the fighting game fatigue at the time.
Anyway i respect your opinion my friend. Thanks for the video.
Nona is very underrated as an artist. They really shine in KoF XI. The cutscene art is pretty cool.
I appreciate you giving proper respect to Violent Ken. Playing with his command dash is what got me into fighting games.
Oh well, trailer for a re-release with rollback netcode hahaha
I'm still playing this game religiously on ps2 even if there's not much to do besides arcade mode and the roster is small. Ultimately I consider this game a big missed opportunity because had it some more time in development, it could have been even better than the first Capcom vs Snk at least
I'll pop it in to my OG Xbox once in a while. It's a fun game, but all of the criticisms in this video are valid.
The CvS that was on anything other than the Dreamcast.
Didn't really play SVC but you have to appreciate the retro optimism of modern FGC compared to the time it was released in. "SNK games were outdated" was so prevalent in US media that it wouldn't have had a chance even if the end result was better.
The result was NGBC. By all accounts SVC was a rush job and it shows. Nevermind all the other SNK titles that received proper care following this flop. Can't believe you're trying to use that excuse.
