Is The Rebel 1100 REALLY As Slow As They Say?

  • Rumor has it, the Rebel 1100 has a top speed of ONLY 100mph...I'm here to put that to the test! It's been "confirmed" for the DCT Honda Rebel 1100, but does the manual Rebel 1100 have the same top speed?
I also put the manual Rebel 1100's 0-60 times to the test! I do 0 to 60 runs for all 3 modes- Rain, Standard, and Sport. I didn't quite have the ideal space to do proper 0-60 runs, so they were done more to compare the power in the 3 modes than to test a true 0 to 60 time for the Rebel 1100. I of course could've shaved considerable time off if I were doing them from a dead stop in a straight line.
I hope you enjoyed and learned something! If/when a tuner is released for the new Honda Rebel 1100, will you be getting it for your bike?

The problem with using your phone to measure things like 0-60 times is that pretty much all manufacturers use the same type of GPS module for their phones. These modules only update their position once per second leading to an inaccuracy of up to 1 second for any measurement you try to make.

You are very incorrect my friend. Wide open throttle in any mode gives you all of the engines power. The only difference in the modes is throttle response but wide open in rain is the same amount of power as wide open in sport.... sport could be faster by hundreds of a second because it is more responsive. But there is no difference I power it has already been tested and proven on a dyno.

I owned a 2000 Suzuki GS800L a few years back which exhibited similar wobble at speeds exceeding 80mph+. It became much more stable at those same speeds after I installed a windshield. In fact, I had to start paying attention to my speedometer because the wind against my chest was no longer an indication of my speed, and I was exceeding 90mph too easily.

That was a really interesting video. For the few throttle controls that I have experimented with, it was always in partial throttles that were doing something. The mindset is to ensure that you don't unintentionally open the throttle 20-30% too much in a sketchy situation. However, it is noted that a full-throttle is always intentional as you have a lot of twisting to go full throttle (to get you out of trouble, and sometimes into one ;-) ). So, the mode shouldn't be stopping you from opening the throttle completely. You can compare it to cruise control when you hit the break or when you try to accelerate where something demands to override the control.
Regarding the governed top speed, in my opinion, a cruiser is not really for going over 100mph but to enjoy the cruising, scenery, and the bike at the same time. Also, it's great that honda did acknowledge the limitation of the bike and kept the bike in the safe range. I wonder what would happen if people started to go 120 mph with those scary wobbles.
Thanks for sharing and keep up the good content!

If the front end feels scarily loose at high speed, that sounds like something is wrong. You should have that checked at the dealership. For a bike costing over 9 grand, I would be really upset if it was a fundamental design flaw. An 1100 should be able to go that fast without feeling like the front wheel is coming off.
Also, I wonder what Honda's motivation was for limiting the bike to 100.

I can count the times on one hand that I've hit 100+mph, but I like a bike that's able to do it. I definitely think the Rebel would be able to significantly increase the top speed but it'll need modification, of course. And that wobble at high speeds does worry me some, as even my Harley doesn't shake like that (I'm a Honda/Kawi guy but I decided to try out a Harley). Overall this video was very educational for me and I hope it helps potential owners as well as modders when coming up with solutions to the low top speed and the shaking. I know this comment is old, but an important message to OP:
keep that Sporty tight and the bushings in good shape. That's assuming you have the post 2003 rubber mounted Evo. Check torque specs on your mount mounts and ensure that no rubber bushings are worn. That's what causes the dreaded death wobble. Harleys don't have fork stabilizers like sport bikes because the front end geometry has enough rake to not worry about wobble, but loose mounts and worn bushings can allow things to not vibrate and flex at at the same frequency and in the same direction. That disagreement in movement makes it wobble.
Like any bike that has more rake than a sport bike, check front end drop off when you change primary fluid (like 10k miles) to ensure that your neck bearings are torqued correctly. Failure to do so could lead to wobble.
Harleys are rock solid. Anyone who experienced wobble on a rubber mount Harley wasn't doing their maintenance. Dealership service centers are dandy, but don't trust them with your life. Learn to wrench.

I think the modes are how sensitive the traction control is, not how much power is on the wheel. I think it is going to give however much throttle you dump, as long as the wheel is maintaining traction.
The front end wobble looks like its from drag on your body, it starts lifting the front. If you had a windshield it would help push the front down.

the controller in these is smart enough to know what you need when you give it wide open throttle, the modes are just throttle response, full throttle is still full throttle though. if your asking for full throttle the bike assumes you need to move fast, so it gives you full power.

  • @MattBKn
    @MattBKn 3 года назад

With bikes that have throttle by wire and different power modes, the different power modes will change how the throttle responds.
I don't know how the Rebel 1100 does it exactly, but for the 2020 BMW S1000RR if you rotate the throttle to the 50% position, you will get the following throttle inputs in each of the power modes:
    Rain: approximately 30-35%
    Road (and Dynamic): 50%
    Race: approximately 65-70%
If you rotate the throttle to the 100% position, you will get 100% throttle regardless of the power mode you are in.

You said you had the bike set to full load? Did you set the rear pre-load higher? You shouldn’t increase pre-load on the rear to stiffen the suspension. That’s not what pre load does. You’re actually pushing more weight down on the rear and making the bike lighter upfront. Preload is to set sag, it’s not dampening. If you want to be more stable at higher speeds, you need to upgrade the front suspension with fork cartridges.

    1. The app isn't professional. It's a free app using GPS data to determine speed of travel, and the data is not transmitted instantly.
    2. You take 10 min to turn from stopped to before the bike is upright after the turn, which then you crank down on the throttle.

I used to have a 2018 CB1100RS, and told my dealer all the issues I had with it:
Front wheel feels too light over 90mph. I took it up to 135mph and frightened myself stupid. I had to lie over the tank to get weight over the front wheel.
Excessive vibration on the bars at most speeds.
Front suspension was soft as it dipped, but then slammed hard, so if you braked and hit a pothole you flew out of the seat. Nearly lost the bike once that way.
Rear suspension was awful, it was so harsh. Every bump on the road was magnified up my spine.
The seat looked like it ought to be comfortable, but it was not. 50-60 miles and I had to get off and stretch my legs for 10 minutes.
The 4 cylinder engine was so underpowered for its size.
The bike was too heavy for its size, by about 50-60lbs.
So, he sent that off to Honda, and I switched to a gen 5 Kawasaki ZX10R. Night and day. Everything perfectly engineered. With such a tiny seat, it is way more comfortable than the Honda CB1100RS.
So, they gave me a test ride day a couple of weeks ago on the 2021 Rebel 1100.
My feedback was that the engine was better, but nowhere near enough power for an 1100 still. I know I am spoilt with my mapped ZX10R having 200hp, but the Africa Twin engine is as dull as dishwater. Better than the 4 cylinder on the CB1100RS, but that isn't saying much.
Addressing the top speed front wheel lightness by limiting the top speed is stupid (but it does still feel too light after about 70mph).
Suspension front and rear just as bad as the CB1100RS, same with the seat and handlebar vibrations.
The front brakes with a single rotor was not good enough (but maybe another reason why the top speed is limited).
Bike felt every so slightly lighter, but that might have been the smaller fuel tank? Why make a full frame bike these days? There is no need, it looks ugly and adds weight.
Seems to me Honda really missed an opportunity to produce something better than the Indian Scout, and missed by a country mile. See this website for other ideas Honda had to use this engine:

Hey I was wondering if the manual version has the bulge on the right side that digs into your ankle. I was fortunate to have the new 1100 at my local dealer. It felt great but the crankcase cover (I guess) was sticking out into my ankle. It was a DCT version. Can I get some feedback on the manual version? Thanks!!! Love the videos.

    • @LifeOfBurch

It does not do that on the manual! I was able to ride my buddy’s DCT model and that was the first thing I noticed. I believe (but don’t quote me on this) it’s something to do with the DCT transmission, because the manual model doesn’t have that bulge at all. Your ankle is a solid couple inches away from the engine. Deeefinite perk to getting the manual in my opinion! I’m hoping to do a full DCT review in the next couple weeks 🤘🏻

That is NOT how you do 0-60s, you can't be in a turn, you need to be stopped on the straight or you will be slower and the bike can't put the power down.
Go onto a straight, stop when it's safe, keep the wheels straight (no turning), then try again you will be faster.
You will need to rev the engine at stop a bit with the clutch pulled in to give the bike a better launch and a faster 0-60 time. You'll be under 5 seconds 0-60 with a proper motogp start but that takes practice.
Also you can't use "an app" to measure the timing it will be slower than an actual proper speedometer/timer.
Better technique is to make sure your gopro is on the speedometer, and count the frames or seconds on video when it hits 60. That will be more accurate.
But yes it is ECU limited which you can remove in the future to gain back quite a bit of power and unlock the stupid 100mph restriction.
Also I think the speed wobbles you are feeling has more to do with engine/electronics cutting power causing vibrations through the chassis, removing it may allow to engine to rev freely and not introduce secondary or tertiary vibrations but more testing is needed.
The 1100 is actually longer than the 500 and that bike is still stable above 160kph (100mph), so with 2" larger front tires the 1100 should be more stable at high speeds than it's little brother rebel 500. Unless something is fundamentally wrong with the suspension geometry/damper settings.
Nice test, some room to improve. Looking forward to next video!

Short story, long: around 1995 some kids knocked my '78 Suzuki GS1000L over in the parking lot at work and broke my Slipstream. Next day was 1st ride w/out a screen and I never felt my jacket fill up with wind and pull me off the back like that before. I got up to speed and had to let go of the handlebars to keep my fingers from opening the throttle wider as I was hanging on for dear life. I got control before the first curve and pulled over in a church parking lot to thank God for letting me survive that moment of stupidity. I'm pretty sure there was a pucker mark on the seat for a few weeks. I've ridden slow w/out a windscreen ever since, LOL.

very interesting. thanks for the attempt. i have a feeling, being how light the bike is, in combination with the weight distribution, is causing that 'squirrelly' effect at the higher speeds. unlike with a lightweight sport bike that has most of the weight on the front end, along with the rider being mostly on the front end, keeps the front more stable. the Rebel is light and with it's geometry makes the rear end squat under load/full throttle, lifting the front.
but, like you said this bike isn't made for top speed runs, just quick blasts here and there. ; )

I'm trying to like these (rebels, and cruisers in general), but I apparently fail to see the point. My Kawasaki Ninja 300 will bounce off the rev limiter all day at 120mph, and it feels stable. Or I can get over 70MPG when NOT doing that. It hits 60mph in 4.7seconds with only 300cc's. It's very fun and nimble in the twisties and commuting around town, and costs half of the Rebel 1100. Not trying to be negative or insult anyone, but what is it about cruisers that people are going for? The styling? Comfort?

  • @BmxDieseldude

Assuming there isn't a mechanical issue (bad tire, something out of balance ect) its most likely that you're too tight on the bars. Its especially critical to stay loose on them under acceleration because as the weight comes off the front the tire will very very slightly skip and dance. If your tight you will be fighting the physics that otherwise would be correcting the wiggle for you. A lot of riders say the same of more upright naked bikes too but 9 times out of 10 its just gripping the bars too tight.
    Ride safe man!

Hey Burch, I just bought the Rebel 1100 and I'm so ashamed to say it (seriously though) it's the ninth motorcycle I've bought since August of last year meaning August of 2022 (we're in Aug. 2023). I don't think the 1100 is slow, it takes off like a rocket almost, but the ECU limits the throttle for safety reasons and in this case you can't remap the ECU, you need a whole new ECU and the correct mapping to get the full power the 1100 delivers which is about 130 Mph. Me, I'm middle age so I'm cool with the 107 Mph I get out of her, I've had my share of scary stuff on bikes but some guys may not buy the 1100 bc maybe Honda went a bit too far. Honda could've limited the bike to 115 or 118 Mph in perfect safety, Cheers, Mike.

As other Rebel owners in the US confirmed, the 1100 has a speed limit of 100 mph. This is something I cannot understand, as its little sister, the 500 is only limited by the power of its engine ! I was able to reach over 110 mph with the Rebel 500. No front wheel vibration whatsoever! Of course this bike is not intended for high speeds, but it was able to develop more than 100 mph with an engine half the cc and half the power. The guys at Honda Spain told me that the 1100 will have no speed limit in Europe. Let's wait and see when they launch it in Europe.
