    This, the Honda Rebel 1100, or Honda CMX1100, is Honda’s answer to the Indian Scout, Triumph Bobber and Harley Davidson Sportster. I couldn’t wait to find out how it compared!

    I love how Honda doesn't try to imitate HD, Triumph, or Indian too closely. Honda knows that they can't replicate other brands, so they just focus on making it as fun, cheap and reliable as possible.

    I hadn't ridden in nearly 50 years. I got a Honda Shadow. Living in Southern California with access to anywhere freeway/ interstate highway dependent I had no confidence in the Shadow at 55 mph. No grunt to pull away and a general head bobbing, jittery ride.
    6 Months later in March 2021 I traded for a manual Rebel 1100. What a difference! At 80 to 85 mph on the freeways with the fast lane traffic it feels like a slot car. In sport mode I never have to touch the brakes and use engine braking ... except to cancel the cruise control. Setting the cruise control 5 mph or so slower than traffic is amazing. You have some instant 'slow down' when you then throttle up to traffic speed ... and a quick twist and you are shooting past any potential danger ahead.
    I now have 7500 miles and a 2500 mile tour through the Eastern Sierras and up the coast from Northern California to central Oregon and back. I should also mention I live on 40 mile mountain highway in a town over a mile high where all manner of recreational motorcyclists come on the weekends to test the twisties and views. I stay off the road till they all go home. Lucky me with it almost all to myself weekdays. As much as you can love an inanimate object, I love my Rebel.

    Upgrades to my 2021 Rebel1100 Dct
    I stand 5'7" 140lbs with 30" inseam
    - replaced the stock seat with a Mustang seat
    - added set back risers from Voigt Moto Technik - (30mm with 21mm offset plus a 3cm brakehose extender)
    - adjusted the prelude on each of the rear shocks 8 clicks in
    Doing this improved the fit and comfort beyond my expectations. Great Ride!

    • @mikemac1022
      @mikemac1022 Месяц назад +2

      @@DogMania The Rebel 1100 does not feel like a 500+ lb bike - at least to me. I'm not a new rider, so it may feel different to you.
      I will say the weight sits low on the bike, so handling turns and overall control or lack there of, is not an issue. It rides and handles great. The engine is from the Africa Twin, time-tested with plenty of power and torque. I've owned it over 3 years without issue apart from normal wear and maintenance and would, without hesitation, buy it again.
      I do not know your skillset or how many miles of experience you have riding? You know your comfort level. If you feel comfortable and proficient riding, the 1100 is a logical and worthwhile move up in ride. You can always ride the 1100 in rain mode for a few thousand miles until you feel comfortable and confident with its handling and power. Remember, be honest with yourself, if you don't feel ready now then wait and enjoy your 500. The 1100 will still be available for purchase down the road, it's not going anywhere. Good luck in whatever you decide - ride safe!

First full year as an older person learning to ride (50-ish) I have a few thousand miles on super small displacement (200cc fuel injected 330 pound regular bike)…. I’ve tried a few times on practice rides on a Nc700 which is 500 pounds and sorta got used it (500 pounds but the weight is low), but definitely could feel the heft and energy requires on the bars at low speed figure 8’s but fine riding on the road… I realized I like the flickabilty and tossable nature of lighter bikes so I may veer towards the 500…. Hi I have done 5,000 miles on my red manual 1100 rebel. So you can say I've got to know the bike. Its a very capable bike as a tourer, back lane scacher. Comuter. It's a street bike that looks like a cruiser. I was very surprised how brilliant it is.

  • @NickWhitfieldnw
    @NickWhitfieldnw 2 года назад +165

    Something had always looked "not quite right" about the Rebel to me that I hadn't been able to put my finger on - but you solved it instantly. It's the look of the engine. Interestingly, now I've accepted that it's the engine that doesn't quite 100% fit the cruiser / bobber aesthetic I can look past it without that lingering feeling. It's a really interesting bike. People who really want an Indian or a Harley will always go in that direction, but this is a fantastic modern take for a good price and with that Honda build quality and reliability.

    1st off.... The dog poo part was hilarious. I hadn't ridden in 40 years, and I moved from flat area to the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. I decided to buy a bike to ride on the mountains. I took the national motorcycle class at a Harley Davidson dealership. I tried a lot of bikes of all makes, but it had been so long since I rode a bike, so I chose the Rebel 1100 because of the modes and how light and easy it is to control. The weight is in the bottom because of the engine. I rode it home in rain mode. I eventually moved to Standard mode, and rode it for awhile. Later, when I felt comfortable, I moved to Sport mode. I made a good decision, and I'm happy that I didn't start with the Rebel 500 first, then move up to the 1100 because no money was wasted. Also, it's the smoothest riding bike I know of. Thanks, and watch your step😂😂

Another details: Little storage under the seat have a USB C, not many acessories currently on the market.. most of 500 and 300cc dont fit the 1100, have a DCT (auto clutch) 1100 version, when you ride feels like a naked and not a cruiser, speed limit 160 or 170 slower than the 500cc.
    If you re short probably need a handlebar risers and if you are are tall probably a foward foot kit.

    I've got the 2022 Indian Scout Bobber since January and what can I say?
    The Rebel is a really good looking and reliable bike. Look at the engine, the fuel tank, the lights or the price. This motorcycle is perfect for what it is intended for. No hate for other things people have or like, it's that easy.
    If you want to buy a Honda? Get one. Harley Davidson? Get one. They all produce nice bikes and in the end, we ride together on the same streets. I really enjoyed your review! Keep on!

    Id bet the security and confidence of it being a Honda engine and engineering goes a long way to making people say Yes to buying it. Id also bet its as smooth as soft butter going down the road. With potentially bullet proof reliability for a few thousand less. Many will probably not care the engine isn’t retro looking. I prefer my Triumph , am I in the minority with that opinion ? Curious on the sales figures in a year. That would be an interesting video. To Compare Honda, Harley, Triumph, Indian sales figures. Thanks Freddie and Monica ! Glad you made it back safely 😎👍

    Is that a Barbour jacket you're wearing Freddie? It looks great on you and fits the blustery, damp, British riding vibe of the video.
    I remember when the first Honda Rebel came out in 1985, a 250cc.
    It literally looked like a lawnmower engine bolted on to a Raleigh Chopper bicycle. About the same size, too.
    We V-max riders would point and laugh out loud whenever we saw one in the street, parking lot, stoplight, etc. Good times...
    But look at it now, 1100cc! Its all grown up and looks amazingly cool.
    Great video review and good summary of the different bikes in this category.
    One more pros I can add to buying a Honda, legendary reliabilty and cheap spare parts.

    I really wanted to love the new Rebel but I'm one of those that just can't get past the styling. Modern, ok but I can't find the soul. Each to their own, for me looks-wise I'd feel so much cooler riding the older model and I'm still a thirtysomething.

      @@bullseye911 I think I'd agree. The silhouette says cruiser but all those angular lines and shapes give it a scrunched skewed look that makes as much sense to me as modern art haha. But like with art, you can never tell if there's something you're missing..

    That engine might be a bit mild for it size for raw horsepower, but as someone who owned an Africa Twin, the engine alone would put this near the top of my list if i were looking for a cruiser. It just pulls and goes any time, any rpm. The big rotax in a spyder is the only other engine I have ridden that cared so little what gear it was in. In the Africa Twin that engine supposedly had sub 3 second 0-60 but never really felt fast because the power came on so smooth. It could be a bit unnerving how quickly you could be going really fast without feeling like you had accelerated hard.

    I love these reviews from you and Monica! You're positive, instead of nitpicking about every single detail. Not every bike is simply the best bike ever built, but I'll be an absolute joy for the owner. I don't need to trailbrake into corners from 150mph, or pretend I'm Marquez. I'm going to have to try one of these Rebels. I'm on an old stripped Versys 650 that looks like it belongs in an episode of The Walking Dead - but I've never really wanted a cruiser, because it's.. I'm not that type of guy (not that there is one, but we know the stereotype) - this seems like a perfect fit for me, because it's not a "fashion statement" or an "attitude" - I can ride a cruiser without looking like a "biker" (..we all know the stereotype). I know, why should I care what people think, but.. I'm a broad shouldered metalhead with a shaved head and a beard... Oh well - I'm rambling. This feels like a cruiser for someone like me, who can't wrench to save my life, but need to carry my sticked-up old laptop anywhere I go :)
