Thank you so much! This is the kind of small thing people tend to accidently omit in their beginner friendly tutorials. I understand it's so easy when you're familiar with software to forget that actual beginners don't just know these things so I reallyyy appreciate creators like yourself that do these tutorials on one subject that's causing issue. I've abandoned a lot of learning over the years due to being stuck on something simple like this and not being able to find a solution. Thanks again! 🥰
I'm just two weeks into learning Blender -- this was, by far, the best explanation of how the mirror modifier works (and doesn't work). Thank you for teaching us at a speed that can easily be followed and comprehended. Excellent tutorial
I've never subbed and liked someone so quickly before. Thank you! I was having so much trouble with using the mirror modifier that I just did it the long and hard way.
Your tutorials are clearer and more objective than many paid courses out there! And better, it's free! Your channel is definitely the best blender channel today, i only have to thank you:)
Wow I had a issue mirror modifiers and I couldn't find anywhere then I've watched your video and BOOM! you just talked about my promlem that i never find. You got a new subscriber.
A little addition to the third method: Alternatively in layout mode you can select object, go to object menu -> apply -> Apply all transformations. Result moves the object origin to the world center without moving any meshes.
Yes, this is a very common problem and maybe a reason it persists is that everyone seems to miss one part of the problem which is less obvious. Please try this. Add a cylinder so that you have a shape that looks different when rotated. In OBJECT mode, rotate the cylinder 90 degrees around the Y. Then switch to EDIT mode, select all and move everything along the X. Now add the Mirror modifier to the object and mirror along the Y. The origin of the object is still at the World Origin and outside the cylinder, but the Mirror modifier does not work. You have to use the Z axis for it to work. Just making sure the object origin is in the correct place is only one part of the problem that makes this modifier a bit annoying. When rotating the object the local axis of the object also rotates and that makes it confusing because the mirror modifier seems to work off of the object's local axis, which seems to be why people still get into situations where it doesn't seem to work. You might want to update this video to include applying any object transformations before adding the modifier.
how i wish i saw your vids earlier while using this mirror modifier. figuring this out on my own gave me headache but a learning experience. thanks for your tutorials! :D
Thank you!! I'm using maya controls in blender so I got the origin to cursor by using the Ctrl+Alt+X hotkey! Bless your vid for showing me what the solution was!
Nice tutorial! As someone who's brand new to the world of 3D modeling having concise and easy-to-follow instructional vids is literally life-saving lol Question about a reoccurring issue that I'm having with the Mirror Modifier: whenever I apply the Mirror Modifier to an object and then try to merge it with another object (using Ctrl+J), and then bring that combined object into the Sculpting space and turn on X-Mirror, the symmetry is *way* off always. I'm unable to sculpt my object any further cause one half of the the cursor is like going off into space... I've heard lots of different people say you need to check "Apply" to objects with the Mirror Modifier but I've done this and the problem remains; any advice or insight would be much appreciated!
Thanks for watching! Hmm, before you go into sculpt mode, press control A, in object mode, and click on, all transforms. That should fix it, by applying the objects transforms.
For some reason I never thought about that, even though I have used the mirror modifier 100s of times. Seems like by default I was doing it right until one day I did it wrong and I panic ahaha. thanks!
