    Thanks to this review, I tried this one for the first time at a bar in Miami last night that had a surprisingly good selection, and I really loved it! It's a really interesting take on the Jura character, with that slight peaty note, and I have to agree with you, it makes the 10 year old seem a little too young (even though I've always liked the 10 Year old). Thanks for reviewing this one! It made for a great night last night, and a new favorite to add to the collection.

    Absolutely loved this for all the reasons you mention. Lightly peated for the win. You can enjoy this with water or go all night with ice. Intoxicating 'well young' malt this one. Often discounted in the supermarkets too. Anorak lanyard .. some guy in China is laughing all the way to the bank. Nerds!

    Of the Jura standard bottlings I prefer Elixir. When I see a bottle of Jura I am reminded of the young ladies coming out the tanning salon and when I see the tango coloured ladies I think of a bottle of Jura... both lovely to look at, but both fake coloured!

    Ralfy has this ever been done?;
    disassembling, for instance a 12yo great cask used only once and turn it inside out steam it up, season, condition then toast it, reassemble accordingly.
    could quite possibly work a treat!!
    funny how I got this idea wasn't whisky related but that's another story.
    btw: it worked!!

    I really like this one. I love bourbon and sherry and the two combined with young make just induce my braingasm. Amazing drink. Well recommend it to all. Its one of those that you can have on ice or neat and its great both ways. Can't say that about most malts! For me this is is indeed as good as it gets for £25.

    • @cgavin1
      @cgavin1 9 лет назад

      cgavin1 The bottle I had was a few years old. 2012 iirc. I got a new one today to taste with a mate and its 'similar' but nowhere near as complex. It looks like they are using more peat than before and the ratio of 2-3 year old to older has shifted more toward the young with the peat trying to hide it. Its just not the same. Mine was a bit dull on the finish too- the sweet/sour was gone. Tastes almost exactly like an iced up Ardmore Traditional. Its all just less 'lightly' peated young make now. Refilled casks refilled too many times. Shame! The bourbon/sherry woodniess and sweetness really worked well with the peat but its just too much peat and not enough finish now. You can really actually taste the difference. They have just scrimped on the bit that matters like typical penny pinching lamers. The older Jura and the reasonably-close-to-first-fill casks made it special. Not anymore. Would not recommend this now at £25. At that price I prefer a decent Bourbon (Trace) or a Pulteney (12). Seems to be like most other good cheap stuff; its only good and cheap for a while. Whyte & McKay just always dissapoint me. They never seem to put quality ahead of quantity. They have become synonymous with cheapness and penny pinching. Most people when they find something they like will pay whatever it costs within reason to keep it tasting that good. Instead all we get is incrementally worse bottlings until nobody buys it except the Chinese. Why must capitalism be so capitalist. Heh.

    A friend got me Jura Superstition once for my birthday. I was pleasantly surprised. It reminded me of an Highland Park 12 yr but with a little less peat and more of a sherry cask/cherry stone note throughout the development. If you haven't tried this whisky you should give it a shot. It doesn't have much if any E150 flavor either so I'd say go for it.

    Good review and fair mark. This is only very middle-of-the-road in terms of quality and value, but it's a great example of skillful use of NAS labeling. Superstition is a combination of 13 and 21 y.o. whisky, with 13% peating and, if I was making it, I might not want people to know that was the best I could do with that sort of aging either (particularly if I was Richard Paterson, who put together bottles supposedly worth hundreds of thousands of dollars). As Ralfy notes, this whisky comes across as much younger. Ironically, I swapped a bottle of this away as well, getting a bottle of Jura 10 in return, which I thought was a better, more honest, expression.

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157 10 лет назад

      If there's any more than a dollop of 21 year old whisky in this, I will eat that bottle cork and all. :)
      While I'd believe 13 years for the rest of the unpeated stuff, I still suspect the peated portion is younger. Much younger. Remember how all of the unvatted, purely peated bottlings we've seen (mostly OB) are vintage marked as distilled in 1999? Remember how Superstition first came out in 2003? Yeah...

    • @Malt454

      Scott Ferguson We're certainly on the same page in terms of likely content by percentage volume, but if there's whisky in there less than 13 y.o., then Jura's lying to Master of Malt but, as a side note, Jura's website says "The finest young and aged (UP TO 21 years) whiskies go into this mysterious bottle, so there's a different flavour to explore with every drop", so you might well have a case.

    Hello Ralfy.
    Jura Superstition scares the heck out of me only because the last time I bought a bottle (3yrs ago this July) it was an overwhelming "leather" experience. So much that it could pass for "English Leather" cologne. I waited and wished and just could not wish away that foul taste.
    It was for me undrinkable but it did however make a TERRIFIC 6month aged Scotch-Irish "Ralfy Fruitcake" (JS w/Jameson's).that is still lauded even today especially around Xmas time!! (lovely bottle though still have it)
    in your tasting notes there were no mention of leather at all so things may have very well changed (or maybe I just had an "off bottle of JS)
    Maybe I'll give it another whack since 85 in today's numbers is nothing to sneeze at. Thanks mate.
    Peace

    I usually avoid Jura. Same with Dalmore, because in my opinion Whyte and Mackay are the worst when it comes to adding E150a caramel colouring. Just look at any whisky shelf and you'll have a range of colours then there are the deep red Juras and Dalmores (though Bowmore are up there too). As Richard Paterson says, they do it because their customers expect that consistency in colour. Good luck to them.

    No question this dram has a youthful bite/harshness, but also a very nice balance of interesting and memorable flavors that you touch on. I'm leaning towards Bunnahabhain 12 for my peat-smokey quality per penny (or Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Talisker), but I suppose that's what Jura gets for trying to leverage on the latest no age statement craze. A heavy cigar works very well with this Jura, try any Bolivar or Partagas vitola and voila, this one seems to do well with a bit of oxidizing. Oh yeah, other nice thing about single malts in the States is 750, not 700 ml. USA USA!

    Free gifts are not needed with a good quality malt. Having said that I've purchased bottles with free nosing glasses (only if not priced higher) so I have two Bunnahabhain glencairns, a Glen Moray, Glenmorangie and a Glengoyne "rocks" glasses but also shaped for nosing, that I accept. Otherwise it's almost insulting.

    Ralfy, I am grateful for your comments regarding whisky having been a powerful local currency and the real reason why London imposed taxes on it - in order to take power away from the Scottish people. What you say sounds very plausible. Is this comment connected to the up and coming referendum?
    In your opinion, how would Scottish Independence affect the Single Malt Whisky industry? Do you think an independent Scotland ought to pursue a policy of taking back the distillery ownership from “foreigner”?
    Thank you for a timely review of Superstition as this whisky is readily available in all the Duty Frees in Europe and very popular at the moment. I thought you were generous giving it 85 but because of your opinion, I want to give this another go despite having a negative experience with my initial tasting. Frankly, I found not only the packaging but the whisky itself tacky and cheap.
    When I tasted the Superstition from a newly opened bottle, my initial reaction was that it was very immature and lacking elegance. I also thought it tasted mildly of roasted toffee and glazed sour orange peel. This was however all masked by the roughness of the spirit. You said brown sugar and marmalade and I wouldn’t disagree.
    As you mentioned, it claims to be lightly peated. Maybe my peat recognition is overloaded from all the Laphroaigs, Clynelishs, Ledaigs, Ardmores and Ardbegs I’ve been drinking lately but I really could not detect much evidence of peat.
    I am again really curious as to how you identified a lot of sherry influence which I did not. In fact, from this is what the Jura website says:
    "...balance of peated and unpeated spirits is matured to perfection in ex-Bourbon casks".
    Now bearing in mind they also write that others in their range are a mixture of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon, it would seem reasonable to assume that Superstition does not contain any ex-sherry so I continue to be puzzled and a little worried by your comments. If you are correct then the distilleries are not being 100% honest.

      The Scottish Referendum will be discussed nearer the date of decision. True, this Jura is young, but I added marks for fullness of arrival and development. The finish is certainly short and slightly rough.

      . . . . also, (in my opinion) Jura is known to regularly mature spirit in several casks over time (double-maturation, 'finishing' casks e.t.c.) and as there is no rules on declaring ALL casks used in maturation, technically any cask statement can be true. Rather opaque, but commercially expedient. In my reviews if I sense sherry (rasins and tannin) I tell it as I find it.

    • @RebMordechaiReviews
      @RebMordechaiReviews 10 лет назад

      ***** Fascinating situation.
      1. I've watched all your vlogs and really do trust your ability to identify ex-sherry casks.
      BUT
      2. It seems totally illogical that any distillery would double mature and avoid mentioning this fact as it's a strong selling point. Especially as they do mention the use of sherry casks in other whiskies it makes no sense not to mention it here and state ex-bourbon only.
      Perhaps they don't mention it as the amount of sherry casks they used in total for the final product is so small that it wasn't worth mentioning. In which case your identification of them is even more remarkable and impressive.
      One explanation might be that certain fruity raisins flavours might be coming from skilled distillation sweet cuts. Tomintoul for instance is very fruity yet they state (and it has been confirmed) that they use 100% ex-bourbon casks on certain ranges.
      So you see that you have left me in a quandry.

    @differentspirits4157 10 лет назад

    Nice review; I almost find this one to be like a slightly more schizoid Highland Park 12. Peated Juras are so hard to nail down, I suspect because they might be vatting very young, more heavily peated spirit (maybe even at 5-6) with older (unpeated) stuff. To me that's the only thing that explains how they behave in the mouth. The Prophecy (which I actually prefer!) is even more extreme in this regard - really peaty spirity arrival, long woody finish. Anyhow, the OB Juras are very "constructed" but as such seem to work much better than most.

    • @differentspirits4157
      @differentspirits4157 10 лет назад

      And I would much recommend the Prophecy if you haven't tried it. If the Superstition (which I'd probably nail as an 83-84) is a Highland Park alternative, the Prophecy (which, last I tried it, was about an 87+) is more like a Talisker with more barley fruitiness and just a little nudge in the oloroso direction (old furniture, stale prunes, Nicaraguan cigars, etc.).

    Ralfy,
    Looked on eBay US site, but did not see the lanyard. That to me is a must have as I have dogs and cats and I do most single malt drinking at home. When a cat crosses my path I have dropped the aqua vitae if you will, on the floor and that is a shame. Anyhow might you be able to recommend anywhere else other than eBay?

    Interesting thing that you didn't find any bandaid, iodine medical smells. I have tried and owned a many scotches, I love my peated Laphroaig and Ardbeg but this is the first time that I've explicitly experienced that medicine bandaid smell that's mentioned so often. But it was there only on the first third of the bottle than later completely disappeared. Bandaid, iodine, like you've just entered in the hospital, very, very explicit smell... And also powder milk, condensated milk! Very strange and intriguing smells but as bottle went to the 2/3 it all went away. Still left me with some great spicy and full bodyed single malt for the rest of it.

    Just tried three Jura miniatures (origin, 16YO and the Superstition). Yeah, I finally wanted to try some Jura for the first time but I have to say: very, very dissapointing. Superstition: bad nose (several people compare it to cheap tequilla, I had some tequilla once a very long time ago so I can't confirm this) but again: the nose is not nice, at all. Tastewise: not as bad as the nose but I never would buy a bottle of Jura.
    To be honest: I'm now familiar with about 60 different single malts but Jura is simply the worst. Sorry guys... (among the better whisky's in my opinion: HP18, Glendronach 15/21/Tawny Port Finish and CS, Glenfarclas (21/25), Springbanks, Hazelburn 12, Old Pulteney 21, Glenlivet Nadurra, Redbreast 12Y CS). Oh, and I just tried a miniature of Bunnahabhain 12YO: elegant and quite distinctive! (and bottled at 46.3%).

    • @albertmiller3082
      @albertmiller3082 10 лет назад

      Great suggestions...here a bottle of Signet is just under $200, that's really on the hi side of "affordable malts", the packaging alone is nes plus ultra indeed. A $200 NAS...who would've guessed this would characterize 2014 malt trending? I could either make my car payment this month...OR i could score a bottle of anything-goes Scotch that i am expected to feel PRIVELEGED to obtain at ANY price... Surreal is what it is... NAS for generic table liquor costing under $10 is one thing....but $200 for NAS? I love Glormangie but jeeez...

    • @albertmiller3082
      @albertmiller3082 10 лет назад

      Fyi: "Glormangie" my contraction/spelling of convenience...i haven't priced the Balvenie & at least they give a tally of maturing years...i don't know whether or not introducing label standards ("must reveal ingredients, must identify x, y & z clearly") would bring new discipline to distillers & provide their clients with reasonable & sensible data. No hiding colorants. No marketing nonsense. No secret chill filtration. Manufacturers are proud of their amber nectar, and rightly so, so how does it hurt them to be forthcoming w/information? Manufacturers don't keep secrets so they can bring the public better value, their secrecy is 100% self-serving. Who's kidding who?

    • @chrish12345
      @chrish12345 10 лет назад

      sorry to jump in but yes its better than this one, genuinely aged whiskys but quite refined rather than rugged. Lots of Fino sherry casks involved so its quite dry as well as sweet. I quite enjoyed a recent bottling, but have been very diasppointed with recent Supersitions. I would put the average age in the Propehcy blend at least at 16 years old. As Ralf has said it isn't that peaty though.

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 10 лет назад

      chrish12345 Thanks for the assist. I've given up NAS, so it's really only for information, but it sounds like I'd be disappointed anyway, as the marketing point seemed to be the peating and it's not quite there.

    • @chrish12345
      @chrish12345 10 лет назад

      No its not that peaty but it was/is ( I had mine about 6 months ago) a good cost/quality ratio malt.

      Hope it really is better, bottled at 46% but I'm sure chill filtration has occurred and colour has been added.
