    Ralfy is a person that I would love to sit down and have a conversation with over a nice dram. It's very unusual for me to feel that way about people I have only interacted with over the internet.

    Wonderful to hear that Talisker is improving! I always thought that dram had much more potential than the distillers were allowing. Now, Talisker, are you listening? Knock it off with the chill filtering and e150!!

    Ralfy, thanks for reviewing this Talisker. I am one of those (as you mentioned) who have been avoiding Talisker for a few years after a number of disappointing bottles. I used to enjoy Talisker about 20 years ago but stopped buying it because of that increasingly harsh up front fiery black pepper which overpowered all other flavours. I was pleased to hear that this 18 YO has vastly toned down black pepper notes. I think it’s time I gave Talisker another go.
    I also would go further than you Ralfy regarding E150 and Chilled Filtering. In this day and age all distilleries should have concluded by now that because of the substantial demand for Non Colouring/NCF whiskies that any big distillery that still does not have at least one whisky in their product range which is NC/NCF is making a serious marketing error and is frankly taking the micky! It is inevitably going to cause damage to their reputation. That’s my opinion anyway.

I'm a Talisker lover but never tried the 18 yo ... it's much more expensive than all the " standard " Taliskers such as the Skye, the 10 yo, the Storm and the Port Riughe( which is my favorite ) available for around 40€.... I can get a bottle of the 18 for 90€ and I'll let you know ! You have a nes subscriber now 😎😎😎

    Talisker for me is a classic example of batch variations: T10 2007 very good, 2008 mediocre and 2013 good again. The T18 I got in 2012 unfortunately did not cut it. Rather lackluster compared to what it supposedly could be (and had been according to people whose opinions I value). It's great news that they presumably got their act together again! :-)

    I've been enjoying spirits for only about three years and have not been impressed with my Talisker tastings in that time. I'll give the 18yo a try. On the other end of the age scale, were you among the few who got a bottle of the recent Kilchoman Port Cask Matured 3yo? The youngest whisky I've ever had (and more expensive than the Talisker 18), but a good young whisky. I generally keep away from a NAS whisky, unless I've tried it, myself, or heard outstanding comments about it. And I'm not a big fan of the Kilchoman distillery (I find their whisky well-made, but over-priced), but I'm enjoying this incredibly young release.

  • @boyblue998
    @boyblue998 9 лет назад

    Hi Ralfy. You are getting into rather rare and expensive whiskies these days that must be beyond many pockets. Most 18 years+ command high premiums over the standard 10-12 years siblings. Admittedly, some can be better but the law of diminishing returns applies to most older whiskies i.e. the more you pay the less additional quality you get. There are many excellent younger whiskies out there still to review. Keep up the good work and keep to a budget price.

    I've paused the video to express my hope that I am about to see Ralfy give a score higher than 89. I have watched quite a few of your videos Ralfy but I think the lowest score I've seen was 81 for a whisky that you pretty much panned. This might be the most glowing review of yours I've seen so I'm curious to see what the malt mark will be.

    Thanks for the review Ralfy. Been wondering about this one.
    Looks like some people are fired up this weekend!
    I'd suggest that we all keep buying what we know to be great stuff. I assume any food I buy that does not tell me it is free of filler, hormones, and nitrates is going to slowly kill me. I buy stuff clearly labeled natural, no hormone.... NCF and No color on a label works for me.
    Don't put it on the label and we will assume it isn't true.

So the L4224... code below is the 224th day of 2014. I bought a bottle of this today and got L3238, so 2013. Ralfy, what was your bottle code? This is the first Talisker 18 I've tried so nothing to compare but it's profile matches your description pretty well.

    Hey Ralfy, if you want to know for sure if a whisky has e150 or any coloring agent in it, try to find the whisky in a danish or german webshop.
    in those contries, the packaging is required by law to disclose this.
    i checked the talisker 18 www.whisky.de/shop/Schottland/Single-Malt/Inseln/Talisker-18-Jahre--.html , and it seems like it does indeed have artificial coloring in it ( mit farbstoff ), but there is always the possibility that the whisky sold in the UK does not contain it.

    Hey ralfy, I have big plans for making a whisky matured in coffee casks. Yes, you heard me, a cask previously filled with coffee!! While this may sound strange and may have been done already, I got amazing results using a non-aged canadian whisky in the cask!
    This becomes too expensive and I would like an alternative! (Fussy, fussy consumers, aren't we)
    Would it be safe to use a trombone as the condenser of a still? It looks and performs as a miniature pot still, but I don't know if the brass or other metals would poison the distillate at these high temperatures! D:
    If you happen to know, I would really appreciate the feedback :) thanks! Been a big ralfy fan for years now!!

    • @degmar
      @degmar 9 лет назад

      You'd have to run the t-bone slide through a worm tub to get the condensation, but I don't think the slide would give you enough metal to water contact to properly condense the vapor. Or, you could add a sleeve condenser, but thats a lot more work.
      In any case, you want copper contacting the vapor, not brass. The copper interacts with the vapor and helps remove some undesirable molecules.

      Yea I looked further into it and brass has a lot of toxins you don't want at high temperatures. Will have to go with copper sheet metal and welding.. More old school that way, anyways.
      Thanks!

      Fyi: I spotted a coffee whiskey (not liqueur) today on the state store shelves. I think it was called Nikka or something like that.

    A comment about labels. (I may have mentioned a few points in earlier videos).
    I understand what you are saying that the only statement that really counts is what is stated on the label. If the distillery is willing to write in an email that this product is 100% ex-bourbon casks or is does not contain colouring then they should state that on the label.
    In my opinion, the Whisky Industry should insist that all Single Malts have to state if they contain colouring or any other additives and whether it has gone through chilled filtering.
    Something which you may not be aware of Ralfy is the whiskies sold outside the UK. Very often the importers glue their own lables on top of the original ones and it is impossible to remove them without destroying the original label so you have no way of knowing what the original label says.
    Very often the importers use standard labels and you cannot rely on the information. A classic example is when I bought the Glencadam 15 YO which states on the front of the box "Non Chilled Filtering and Non Added Colouring, bottled at 46%" but at the back of the bottle there is an importer's stuck on label which says that it contains E150a colouring and is bottled at 40%. When I looked at a bottle of 10 YO Tomintoul I saw that exact same sticky label!

      It's an interesting point: "unofficially official" information available on a website, but not on a label. I do find the question of "provenance" regarding caramel, chill filtration, and even types of casks used, to be a bit of a parlour game distraction, however, given that an increasing number of consumers (and some of them old enough to know better) aren't taking a stand over knowing the age of what they're drinking. I find this strange, considering that "craft presentation", although generally beneficial, doesn't amount to the same amount of influence (good or bad) as age on any given whisky and that many who are worried about "this vs. that" type of cask draw the line AT type, without much thought to time IN cask.
      As someone once said, “the scotch industry gets a lot of credit for all the things which it DOESN’T do to whisky, but which saves it money”, and, these days, that list includes adding caramel, chill filtration and stating product ages.

      Malt454 and there there is Glengyle and their Kilkerran Work in Progress which Ralfy reviewed not so long ago. They are now up to WIP 6 which according to a simple calculation must be at least 10 years old now. I can understand them not mentioning an age statement when it was 4,5,6 years but now it's a respectable age they still don't state it on the bottle even though it might cost them a few sales? It's almost as if it's a kind of an anti-marketing snobbery turned into a marketing policy?

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 9 лет назад

      Reb Mordechai It MIGHT 10 years old but, then again, why state age (or, indeed, actually use older stock) when consumers don't demand it (and I’ll bet a lot of the 10 year was used on the new “limited six packs”)? On labeling/product information, I tend to work backwards from what a distiller ISN'T willing to say as these omissions are important - it's only the label which is legally binding in most instances; people can always THINK what they like and inferences are always in the eye of the beholder (look at the legends which have grown up around JW Blue Label). I think that an average of 10 years, much less a minimum of 10, isn't something that a lot of distillers are going to market as an entry-level, now and going forward, without considerably more consumer pressure than many people are willing to exert now, but we do have the power and NAS in general should be boycotted.

      Malt454 Parlor games. Is that when you ask the Bruichladdich brand ambassador about the Laddie 10, and she responds with "let's be honest, there was a lot of 16 yo in the Laddie 10 yo", but they have no problem labeling the bottle as 10 yo?

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 9 лет назад

      degmar Indeed, let's BE honest; "there was a lot of 16 yo in the Laddie 10 yo" - what exactly constitutes a lot, and to who? Is there as much ancient whisky in the 10 as supposedly resides (always as "unofficial and privileged" information) in Blue Label and A'bunadh? The number mentioned is impressive but, without proportion information, tells you very little even though, as a repeated story, it makes Bruichladdich look pretty generous - again, more games. Maybe it's Bruichladdich's running out of the 16 which "fills out" the 10 which led to the 10 being withdrawn for lack of stock? Bruichladdich has "no problem" labeling its 10 (compared to its Classic, for example) - and good for them because I'm paying enough for it anyway - it just has a problem making it? Maybe they need a short refresher on what an age statement means; I’m sure it would be illuminating on the Classic.

    Easiest way to know if a whisky is colored or not. it will usually say it on the back of the box or bottle.... look out for the fine print that says Mit Farbstoff....

    The peaks and lows you speak of.....are the mistakes and corrections a distiller makes something that happened in years past and we only now see the improvements (like 18 yrs later) because of the time it takes to create and then market...sort of like light from the stars reaching earth? I hope that makes sense.

    What a coincidence. last week i put this one on my december list. and the price is very fair in Germany.
    btw it has caramel in it, thats what the German online shops say. Diageo products (if coloured) have it written in German on the back label :"mit Farbstoff".

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 9 лет назад

      That's strange, because although Whisky Expert24 mentions caramel in Talisker 10, 57 North and Talisker Storm, there's no mention of it in connection with Talisker 18. Maybe a typo?

      2 shops say that it is coloured. Getraenkewelt- weiser (great shop with knowledgeable staff) and fine-whisky. I will order a bottle this week. I can confirm it when it arrives.

      Malt454 i hope im wrong. because if it is indeed natural, that colour promises a noticeable sherry influence.

    • @Malt454
      @Malt454 9 лет назад

      Antoine M It would be interesting either way, because it's my understanding that most of Diageo's sherry casks for the Classic Malts now go into the Distiller's Editions and that, previously, as much as 1/3 of Lagavulin stock for the regular 16 was sherry matured - a practice which I think has now been discontinued.

    • @antoinem9411
      @antoinem9411 9 лет назад

      Malt454 how is that even possible? they would have to change almost the entire Classic malts range. Oban, Cragganmore, Knockando, Cardhu, Royal Lochnagar and more are all bourbon-sherry vattings.
      as far as this Talisker is concerned, all online shops state that it is a Bourbon-Sherry vatting. but, the one i just ordered is supposed to be a 2012 version. i dont find a more recent Talisker 18 around here.
      however i do believe that Diageo special releases dont have caramel. there is no "Farbstoff" statement on the labels. just checked my Knockando 25, Auchroisk 20 and Laga 12 CS.

    Hello Ralfy, must be straight with you, I've been avoiding the reviews and chats since all that ghastly independence/political stuff a while back which had a rather distracting and unsettling effect on me. Even stopped drinking whisky for a while, heaven forbid. Water under the bridge now I hope, so let's raise a glass and allow whisky to have the final and lasting word, I'm sure you'd agree with that. Anyway. Good to have you back, so to speak.
    Talisker 18yr old. This is interesting for me to watch, listen and discuss. I visited the Isle of Skye Talisker distillery 4 or 5 years back with my Jack Russell terrier Pip who enjoys drinking beer. Nice place, well worth the experience. Lots of lovely malty smells drifting 'round the village from the distillery, the smell inside was quite different, utterly concentrated and overpowering, akin to chewing fat with a tramp the morning after a serious, serious bender.
    Having made the long trip across land and o'er the sea to Skye via Mallaig, and being able to play the tune well on my pipes, I wanted to buy and make friends with some Talisker, almost everyone spoke of it in hushed tones of approval. But no, as much as wanted, I just did not like the beastly stuff, it's distinctive repellent taste even bringing back that unsteady woozy smell I encountered from within the distillery, unpleasantly reminiscent of overdoing things. So I left empty handed feeling wretched and entirely despondent. And not without a certain sense of betrayal that I wanted one day to put right.The marked exception to their whiskies was tasting the much older 'distillers editions' which were quite different and a class apart, but unfortunately way beyond my budget.
    So we agree on some of the dodgy younger stuff from previous years being a bit 'iffy', your opinion has eased my conscience. I'm delighted you think this 18yr old hits the mark and is suitably fit. Will treat myself to a bottle for Christmas if I see one.
    Thank you for the review, toast of the season to you Ralfy. Cheers!

    Hell freezes over sooner than I will say that 80£/100€ 18yo whisky is best buy or bang for your buck etc. Talisker 10 which is one of the few core range products of any producer that have maintained their quality recently costs 1/4 of this dram. I have no objections of investing 100€ into an independent bottling of sherried Clynelish or Longmorn but run of the mill Diageo product - shiiiiiiit.

It's very strange that it's sold in Canada in a plastic bottle and is considered sub-par. Would love to hear your thoughts here's the interview: www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/ID/ID/2588338030/
