After watching this review, I just HAD to try it! A good friend brought a bottle all the way from Speyside to Las Vegas as a gift. It is impossible to buy commercially in the US. Wow! Such flavor and complexity. Thank you!
Mixing the 10, 15 and the 105 together makes for an incredible blend 🥃
I love these old reviews. And GF 15 is still wonderful in 2022!
Agree. Every now and then when I get a nice work month done, or a nice job opportunity, I celebrate with just crossing the street to enter the other side pub, and have a glass of Glenfarclas 15. Never disapoint.
I just bought a Glenfarclas 15 after an absence of a couple of years. I have to say it's absolutely delicious and excellent value. The nose is very enjoyable. I prefer it without water and it only needs a couple of drops if you want to experiment.
I am finishing a bottle of this now! I am loving it, and am sad that I don't have another in my collection.
Just picked up a Glenfarclas 25 yo got it for a great deal I couldn't believe the price. I'm too scared to open it now so I bought a 12yo Glenfarclas. I have never tried one before and I notice that it's a bit like the Mcallen 10yo but much richer and complex with a bit more dries fruit. Love it! Can't wait for the day I pop opened that 25.. Great reviews Ralfy!!!
Many thanks! I ordered a 16 year bourbon cask Bluichladdich. My next purchase will definitely a Springbank offering. A little on the fence though on going with either the 12 year cask strength Spring...or the 12 year Hazelburn. Maybe the Hazel cos I already have a true Islay on the way...and I want something representing Cambeltown, not peated.
Are you adding all that water because this particular whisky has a nasty alcohol bite? Apart from a few blends, my whisky experience thus far includes Macallan 12 ("Fine" oak), which had too much bite for my taste, and Lagavulin 16, which I thoroughly enjoy neat. Based on this, do you think I'd find Glenfarclas 15 offensive? (Malt mentions: Malt Megarectics (because one's whisky collection can never get large enough!), Malt Munchers, Malt Metronomes). Many thanks for your time and hard work!
Bought a bottle of this recently a tiny amount of sulfur has killed the latest bottling of this venerable single malt. I could weep.
Maybe even add one or more pin holes in the bottom of a cup, to more precisely control the "settling and development" that happens in the glass. Just a random thought, not something I've tried yet... Anyway, covering the glass and letting the dram develop over time, whether that be a few minutes, half hour or over night, is a practice I picked up from you watching your vids. Definitely a good thing!
@halstof67
Thanks for the feedback (and Ralfy, too). I am thinking that maybe it is just me, that sherry-matured whisky leaves a certain taste that I am beginning to find unappealing. I notice just a bit of it after drinking Aberlour 16 (one of my favourites), and a hell of a lot of it with Glenfarclas 15.
Not sure you have ever reviewed the 'farclas 21 YO ralfy, but I'm just finishing a bottle and it is a winner. Very well balanced spectacular value whisky. Seems a lot of folks have overlooked this gem.
I spent a small fortune on a bottle of Glenfarclas 1974. Tasted a bit like cough syrup.
Just opened a bottle of the 15, and i must say most enjoyable indeed sir, thanks for the review ralfy.
The glenfarclas 15 is like the big brother you never had. Always takes care of you.
Hello Ralfy and fellow malt mates! I come searching for some advice, and a wee rant, if you would indulge me?
I sat down tonight after a very long and hard day and thought I'd crack open the Glenfarclas 12 I've had in the cupboard for a few months now. However, when attempting to remove the cork the top came off very easily, leaving what looks to be a very dry and cracked cork still wedged in the bottle. I daren't use a corkscrew as I feel it will break up the cork (no one wants to be sieving their dram, do they?) and I don't have a suitable replacement if I did!
Any thoughts/suggestions? I have contacted MoM where I purchase the bottle, but will probably have to wait a few days for a reply . . . and I'm thirsty!! :(
Feel a bit sad replying to my own comment but thought the outcome may be of interest to some: Basically after me sending pictures of the bottle/cork to MoM they sent a replacement at no extra cost.
Have to say I was pleasantly surprised and happy with the outcome. No fuss whatsoever :) I'm the first to whinge about poor service so feel it's only fair to highlight good customer service when one receives it!
When buying older stock(such as a bottle of Hazelburn 8 which has been on a shelf for a decade) it's very common for corks to fall apart. You do in fact have to use a corkscrew and often strain the whisky into something else. Then clean the bottle thoroughly, allow to dry, and put the whisky back in. Funnels and fine mesh strainers are your friend. Most recent one I had to strain was a 13 year old Arran Single Cask which was bottled in 2011. Well worth the effort for those old stock finds in smaller shops.
Rian Creamer. I had a similar experience with an older bottling of old pulteney 12. Was worth the effort though
Another great review, Ralfy. How would you say this compares with the GlenDronach 15yo Revival (a real gem)? I've not overly enjoyed the 'farclas 10yo or 17yo, but do you think the extra ABV here will help change my mind about Glenfarclas?
Amazing how divided people are on this whisky, all the whisky reviewers I have trust says it is a good quality whisky, but more ordinary people disagree.. However, I tried this with buying a small bottle of it and I must say I think its lovely :)
Glenfarclas is without a doubt something I will keep an eye out for, ty for the review!
@kathan67
I believe the Glenfarclas 17 year old is what gets sent to the US. However that one is bottle at 43% so while we get two more years of aging, we lose some of the ABV (and it's probably chill-filtered now).
Still at the top of my sherry malts list. Thanks
Hi Ralfy, great vlog. Robbie's Drams in Ayr have had a bottling of 12 yo glenfarclas done for them. It's only a few pounds cheaper than the 15 yo. Which one do you feel is the best value for money?
Because Speyside is technically a sub-region of the Highlands, as are the Island whiskys such as Highland Park and Talisker. The four "official" regions are Highland, Lowland, Campbeltown, and Islay. Most people however recognize Speyside as its own region because of the dense concentration of distilleries located there.
Hi Ralfy, is this made with European Oak? I've really fallen for this malt, and I'm wondering how much to attribute the flavor to the barrel type and how much to attribute to the location (Speyside). I'm in search of other whiskies with this character -- Christmas cake, fig, etc. -- but, should I be chasing region type or wood type?
I can’t decide between the 15 and 17 I know the 17 is chill filtered but does that even matter can you elaborate and give a recommendation thanks
@ralfy hope the 30 will be soon as I am about to out my yearly rose with twe and and thinking of adding the 30.
I may have a tip for you Ralfy, after the plethora of great advice I've gotten from your vids - I'd like to bring something for ya... ;-) Upside down plastic Dixie cups. I notice you're still using the Pringles lids. Several advantages, fits nicely over a Glencairn glass/no overhanging ledge/amenable to being picked up and moved around...
Single best advice I've gotten from Ralfy: breath through your mouth and nose when you take in aromas.
Lovely dram, a must try if you like sherried whisky. The best.
I had a gift box that contains the strenght cask, the 15 year old and the 10 yearl old 200ml bottle from my girlfriend and I was waiting your reviews to know wich one I should open first =)... I'll start with the 15 years old!! =) Greetings from Argentina!
Just ordered a 25 year old for £110 after enjoying a dram at a local bar, was very nice spent a good hour+ enjoying it. The 30 year old is a ridiculous price now at £400!!! 300 pound for 5 years!!! 15 year old is £45 with the cask strength at £80. Like your idea of a whiskey club to keep the price down, but unfortunatly I would need to upgrade my friends as they drink lager because they have no taste buds what so ever. Currently enjoying a dram of Great king street artists blend to keep me happy after work today.
did you just say slight "tea bag" arrival?
@Megawatt
Keep at it, I say... I remember a bottle of Glenmorangie Lasanta that drove me a little nuts trying to decide what I thought of it. The first few sips left me thinking it may be a bad bottle? But as I kept pouring drams and the bottle aged, my opinion would change from sip to sip. I'd alternate between "this. is. genius." and "is something not right here... ?" All I can say for certain is the bottle didn't kill me, and never being able to get a firm read was part of the fun.
Ralfy, I recently attended a Glenfarlas tasting - 9 drams up to and including the 40yo. By far the stand-out of the range for price/taste for me was the 21 year old. Really worth a try - any thoughts on reviewing it?
Hi - Thank you very much for your very helpful Review - even after over 4 years :). You are one of my more reputable references when I am looking into new whiskys to try.
A question though - you mention a certain tea to try for reference. I did not quite understand the name. Can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks and the kindest regards.
It's lapsang souchong.
Thabks a lot.
A very reliable source for good lapsang souchong is wuyiorigin.com
Any experience with the 17 year? Just got a bottle as a gift, and quite enjoying it.
what score would you give the 105, just bought it today. Will taste it tonight. Any chance we see a review on the 105 cask strenght
Ralfy im torn.. between Craganmore 12, Glenfarclas 12, or Glendronach 12 ????
Ralfy what are your thoughts on the Glenfarclas 17? I got a bottle for Father's Day (yay family who knows me) and am still trying to get my head around it. I've been following you and drinking malts for several years now, but feel that I'm missing something in it. Thanks for any thoughts.
Excellent start to the next 100 reviews, Ralfy. Looking forward to #300!
Thanks Ralfy. I'll keep my eyes out for this malt.
Hello Ralfy, Will you review any Family Casks in the future? Are they worth buying?
I have been after a farclas 15 for some time and finally got myself a bottle.
Absolutly love the stuff, and the nose is so good after my first few sips i spent 20 odd mins just sniffing the stuff!
Great review, and as a malty minor minion (cough cough malt mention!) im starting to peek out the flavours, in particular the wood bitters :)
well still no sign i can find his 12 year old review. Im any case, i tried to find the 15. one place said they were out and another had a 17? What is the purpose of the 17 vs the 15? Also, why the reduction to 43% in it vs 46% in the 15? The price was $100
I had 100 dollar gift card, i was torn between that even though i wanted 15, a 15 sherry cask Balvanie and a 14 Arran. I chose Arran and not disappointed. and saved $30 compared to the other two.
Managed to score a bottle of this for $70 Canadian Taxes Included! Had the 12yo before, but the 15yo was outta my range over $100 reg price. Great stuff!
i just got lucky on the east coast , NB , got a bottle of the 17 year for 100 $ and i can say its now my favorite !!
How does the "105" compare with the rest of the range? I'm usually a fan of cask strength. Thanks, Ralfy!
intense and 'young' tasting.
I often get a 105 at Christmas, buy it - you'll not regret it.
@genghisquan Everyone has their own preferences. I prefer to add only a couple of drops to most whiskies from 43-46% and not much more to cask strength stuff. If I need further dilution, I just hold the whisky in my mouth a bit longer.
Do you happen to know of which single malt distilleries in Scotland which are independent? Reason being...I tend to get headaches with caramel color and I've heard that independents tend to not add artificial color.
Halo dear malt mate. Any suggestions about contemporary (2014 or 2013 versions) Glenfarclas 15? (Not much useful info on MM or wbase on that one)..Maybe time for re-review? Bye.
15yo still a decent option - 87/100
*****
Many thanks! m.
The 15 yo seems to be among the most-praised of the Glenfarclas line but, alas, it's the one we can't get here in the U.S. (Why?) Ralfy's analysis, as well as other online reviews I've read, make me think it's almost worth a 12-hour drive to Canada to pick up a bottle!
Ralfy, is it a good idea to add some water to the Glenfarclas 12yo? How much? I don't want to drown it.....
yes, just add a little bit at a time till it works best for you.
***** thanks! Now I know that the 3rd teaspoon was too much....;)
2 is enough!
***** have you tried the cask strength version of this yet?
In lieu of just waiting around for tonights review Ralfy Im
luvin these older vlogs that are still quite viable especially when u got that golden spark going on. your a wee bit more adamant and strait-forward being in the mode!
Peace
Can you review the 12?
What is better Glenfarclas 15 or Glendronach 15? both 90 scores
I'm buy Glendronach 15
Totally personal (of course) but the Glenfarclas to me brings what a good blended whisky is to me and that means it is rich and does not stand on one or two major flavors like a lot of single malts do. The Glendronach (I assume you aim at the 15 yrs Revival with the green label) is a great whisky but sherry and chocolate are dominating there. If you prefer that, then go for the Glendronach. If you prefer a more complex taste, try the glenfarclasses... They still taste like the 'old' speysides used to do; complex/rich with a lot of tones.
John Kranendonk thx. Im buy Glendronach 15 and for first time Glenfarclas 10 (~22 eur).
does he have the 12 year old review?
glad I can get this stuff here in Canada. At 80 dollars a bottle here its affordable and well worth it.
+TheJusnic82 $127 a bottle here in Australia. You Canadians have it easy lol
+FoxHound depends on what province. that would easily push over $100 in Ontario ...if it was available
Wait a second... you'd recommend an 82/100 over a 90/100? We'd love a video review of the 105 :)
I notice you always refer to Glenfarclas as a Speyside whiskey but the label says its a Highland whiskey. Which is it? I know part of the Highland region is within Speyside so there exists some overlap but do you feel that Glenfarclas has more of a Speysider character than it does a Highland character? Just curious.
. . . some Speyside malts call themselves Highland !
Hi Ralfy, is the farclas15 chill-filtered?
If you were to pick one, glendronach or this 15?
Gf15 got me into single malts....2 years ago...🏴🏴🏴
Whats the best Repellent for midges on the Isle of Man?
so what is a good introductory scotch?
Ab fab review! Love the 90/100 rating. Good ole 'farclas, aye?!
@ralfystuff hi ralfy , i hesitate to glenfarclas 15 years and 17 years , have you ever taste the 17 years ?
how is the 12yo?
Thanks ralfy - really enjoy your thoughts. I found this SMSW mostly like a sweet cough medicine and abit of tannin. Almost like a bourbon. I think Master blenders need to be mindful of their consumers rather than trying to show off how acute their noses are.
ya mate hounding you again...why is there no review of the 12 and please explain what is the purpose of the 17? I tried to look for the 15 and one shop found the 17 and listed at 43%.
+Brian Skala . . I've just not got round to it yet !
+ralfystuff I'm tasting the 12 right now...After having Talisker 10 and Arran 10 for a bit, this one takes some getting used to....
+Brian Skala The 12 and the 18 were both made for foreign markets. That is why we don't see them much.
17 in the US, I had to order the 15 from MOM, I like the 17 better, more rich cherry and complex sherry, the 15 has a bigger nose than palate. Working on the top of the bottle though, expect time to help. I think the 10/12 are for UK/US markets. Go with Aberlour 12 NCF for the better 12... Never buy Glenfiddich 12, tastes like wet grass, bad.
Ralfy, have you ever considered doing a live show on Ustream, or something similar? I think you have a large enough following that lots of people would attend. It would be cool to be able to ask questions live and drink a virtual dram with you. Let us know the day and time, and we'll be there.
just after opening a bottle of this had the 10 before lovely stuff 15 strong sherry influnce so poured a bit out of the bottle into another let it breath for a while but frist impressions good.
and now that I think of it - the 8yo was really quite interesting too.
The inconsistency caught me by surprise also....
How does the 15yo compare to the 18yo, Ralfy?
. . . both good, 15 better !
Cheers! Ihad almost thought so myself, given the relatively low price they charge for the 18yo Glenfarclas.
As so often, all a matter of cask quality I suspect.
It is astounding though that an 18yo should be less good than a 15yo, at least it is the reverse with Laphroaig 18 vs 15yo - the winner clearly is the older one.
Cheers, I will soon try them side by side.
Has anyone tried the 21YO?
Ralfy, which Glenfarclas expression would you say is the best value? The shop by my house has a 17 yo.
+Paul Marko . . . skip the 17yo, the 15yo is better value. The 12yo is good too.
+ralfystuff... Ralfy, thanks for the recommendation. By the way, I had guessed 156 corks... SO CLOSE!
+ralfystuff I am struggling to choose between the 21 and 25yo, any advise here?
Where is the review of Glenfarclas 30?!
Could you do 21 Ralfy? I tried it yesterday and it was lovely.
I plan to review it soon.
Sean, really no need to try and brag here...we know what you're trying to do and it's not working my friend.
TheAmbSteve far from bragging. i enjoyed it but i'm curious as to what a more experienced whisky drinker would say. I've never had whisky over 16 years before and don't know what to expect. i don't know if it's decent value for money to buy a bottle (€70) or how it compares to the 15 (which is €20 cheaper)... get my point?
TheAmbSteve can't believe I'm actually explaining myself to you, but oh well.. now you know...
im new to the whiskey game. i have been reccomended this whisky by a friend and in he's opinion this is the best whiskey bang for buck. has anyone ever tried this?
would anyone reccomend this?
yes, dense sherry malt glorious.
alan wilson I tried some last night and it was probably the best sherry oak whiskey I have ever tried. I've tried a lot over the last 2 months ;)
Keep up the good work ralfy, cheers!
Kof sweets coaf... koff.. what does this word mean?
Wayfarer8 cough
Indiana Jones intro, love it!!!
Thx so, so much
I thought Glenfarclas 15 left a nasty aftertaste. I was quite let down by that.
You actually forgot the most important reason why Whisky that is older is more expensive.
You need to pay the taxes for the alkohol the day you distill it, so a 30 year old Whisky will need to make not only the money spent on producing it, but it needs to also make what you would have gotten with savings account at a bank. These 30 years of interest need to go in the calculation.
I'd love a review of the 30 year-old, if you can afford it!
@ralfystuff Thanks ralfy. They left me alone at the TT, but they had a good crack at me in Fort William a couple of nights ago.
if it's a spaysider why it says HIGHLAND on the bottle?
"Whole different kettle of fish."
90/100
👍❤️🥃
I just bought a bottle today. The 21 YO is an odd duck. The finish tastes of a wood plank that has had fish cooked upon it and been left outside for a day or two. It has a wonderful nose, good arrival and mid palate, and a very disappointing finish. For me anyhow...
trololololo...
