Greetings Mr Ralfy and thank you for another informative video. It always seems that every Glenfarclas I have tried comes a bit short. It is either its abv or chill filtration or its price. I have 8,10,12,15,17,21 and 25 but can't justify family ownership or old school technics anymore. Last week, I bought a bottle of LAGG Corriecravie, which is the same price range as 15 or 17 yr old Glenfarclas. This LAGG just blew my mind. It's extremely good for a 5 yr old single malt. I tried Glenfarclas 17 and LAGG last night again. Farclas just came short again.I love the simplicity of one bottle shape for all and old school labelling, etc, but lack of info is a big put off for me these days. Have a great weekend.
Glenfarclas has always been my favorite distillery. Never had a disappointing experience with them. Is it the best dram in the world? No, not at all. But it also doesn't need to be. It's always a bit like homecoming when i get back to Glenfarclas. I always know what to expect and it always delivers. Absolute palate pleaser!
Hello Ralfy! Long time no see. Glad to see you're doing well and are still as verbose as always. Unfortunately for many of us Americans either a lot of these whiskies are not available where we live or have become VERY expensive. Meanwhile, American whisky makers are popping up like mushrooms all over the place and many of them are amazingly good (and getting better fast). Well, why not? Americans have been making whisky for a very long time too and recent changes in the laws of various states like Oregon (where we live) are opening the door for distilleries to open and thrive. But I owe a lot of what I know about whisky to watching your podcasts and I love the Scottish whiskies (when I can afford them). Good health to ya and good cheer!
In my experience, the tube has already saved a bottle from breaking more than once during transportation and forwarding. I think this is extremely important for expensive bottles. It would be a shame to receive a broken bottle of Springbank or Kilkerran upon delivery at the post office just because the manufacturer decided to save on production, thinking about the environment.
J&A Mitchell stopped using tubes for their Springbank and Kilkerran whiskies several years ago under the pretence of ‘saving the environment’. It was nothing to do with the fact that they had just redesigned the Longrow labelling and had designed a rather nice looking tube for it, only for the tube supplier to muck up supply. Just saying. PS I was one of the lucky ones to buy a Longrow 18 in said tube before they ran out. Rather nice it is too.
In the early to mid noughts (2000-2008) the 12 and the 15 were both really, really good drams. Haven’t even had a glass let alone a bottle since then. Hope they get back on track…. a shift to integrity bottling would be welcomed!
I agree wanting Glenfarclas to actually be 46%+, I grabbed a 21 year because the price is so reasonable compared to anything else at that age. But the 43% leaves it really lacking in character. But being that it was 1/2 the price of or more of other 21 years, I'm not that terribly upset.
Sunlight ruins whisky on the shelf… boxes protect and archive whisky. For $100 you’d better realize the bottle may sit on a shelf a year or more. NEEDS PACKAGING to guard
Ralphy, you are bang on about direct fire stills and wormtubs. It is a shame modernity has taken hold of something which is, at it's heart, a tradition.
This was my first love when I started on my whisky journey, it’s become too expensive too quick, I still miss her though it’s been >6 yrs since I last tasted this, you made me want to go back Ralfy …. Only if the price is right. Thanks for the review Sir
That was a nice aussie rules footy handball there old mate. I picked the glenfarclas 15 up based on your last review and I'm very much enjoying it. Cheers Ralfy
I’ve emptied a 10 year and halfway thru a 12 year Glenfarclas. 15 I haven’t seen in my travels but if I do I plan to grab, they’re usually well priced compared to others
Many years since I had a Glenfarclas and it was a 105. I received a bottle of the 10 year old a few months ago and I drank it like water! absolutely delightful dram for my tastes.
It’s chill filtered, not barrier filtered, big man. They won’t be listening or engaging in market trends, which is why in part we like Glenfarclas. So don’t be holding your breath Ralfy.
I love Glenfarclas 15, last winter i had half a bottle, and that same bottle have now moved out to greet this years winter starting soon, so it may be empty in February (No heavy drinking for me). However i am not sure i want to see bits in my whiskey....i have been having some beer's with that, where filtering is completely absent....and i think when you go down that far, i prefer my whisky without bits floating in it. Just my opinion. Been following you for one and a half decade here on RUclips Ralfy, and i will follow you to the bitter end wherever it takes you m8. With kind regards from Denmark. (Will be buying a new bottle soon, just in case)
The Glenfarclas 105 needs quite a lot of water to open it up but I do find it drying. Seems to suck all the moisture out of me. I have to drink a pint of water 20 minutes after. However, after adding some water it goes very cloudy indeed, so not too much filtration there. Not tried the 15 yet but will do
Glenfarclas makes a wonderful Whisky, they hae such a wide range of Whiskies. I even Have an Armagnac that was aged in their casks that was PHENOMENAL , wish more of the Distillerys would act like Glenfarclas, think you malt mark was a little low.
I agree with you about the 101. It's not what it used to be. However, the young age statement bottlings are quite good, especially for the price (in China- where whisky's don't seem to be taxed)
I got three bottles of the 25, decided to keep for a long time, the 15 was really good but feel it’s not the same. Which whisky is the same as it used to be??
You’re right, and I wish they would lose a lot of the unnecessary packaging and marketing and use the savings to bump up the abv. In the American market I see an awful lot of Scotch sitting on the shelf gathering dust. Imported spirits just cost more and a good portion of Americans are preferring to drink their own native products because the value on the dollar is just a no brainer. American whiskies are providing much higher bottling abv at a much more reasonable price. It’s really a shame because single malt was my introduction to quality whiskies, but I just find myself priced out of the market for most of the interesting ones available here. If they are even available in the first place.
I don't want to see a simple box or tube lost for reasons I stated on here in my post. But rest assured if Glenfarclas or any other distiller withdrew them, don't be fooled into thinking that the savings would be used to bump up the ABV or lower the price it would just be more profit for them.
One of my very favourites. I wonder aloud how much all of our favourite bottlings just lose their luster over time as they become more familiar? Is there any merit to the idea that the discovery of a new excellent malt cant be matched by any re-visit?
Is there any way you can add the bottling date code in the description box of your videos Ralfy? Would always be interesting to know that info when reviewing a specific bottle. It would drill down into the granular detail of what you are drinking a little bit more. E.g. my current unopened Glenfarclas 15 is 23 11 22
