I think it is important to review the less than stellar whiskies. The journey is incomplete without such.

In my opinion, colouring and chill-filtration should not be allowed on whiskies aged 15 and above!

Great review, Ralfy! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
I was looking at indpt bottlings of Jura a while ago due to seeing the potential in the boringly presented 16yo, but found them a bit few and far between, at least here in Germany.

Hello Ralfy. Great review and I would have to agree with many of the points you have made here. I have tried this bottle and like yourself was a little underwhelmed with what I sampled. I have also noticed that after being able to sample some drams before I buy that in the place of purchase ( which has made my decision to buy), when I have gotten around to opening the bottle my memories of the experience do not match. Whisky prices are becoming excessive in my opinion for what they are, but I appreciate that the producers, who have made and nurtured the whisky deserve a higher cut, especially when you see what they can go for in the secondary market. I have my go to whiskies as I feel that the quality produced for the price meets expectation. I am a little apprehensive though of buying older products due to the quality to price differences. I remember only a few years ago buying a premium 30 year old single malt for less than £200 but nowadays the same malt ( although a newer version) is over £600 from that provider. I don't feel the quality has matched the price although it is still as good as the one I bought a few years ago.

Thanks ralfy for being so honest and fair but also thorough. Cutting corners is ok and important, but if quality starts to suffer to such a degree, it has gone way too far.

I don't think I've ever seen Ralphy upset at a Scotch in the way that he was upset with this entire Jura presentation. From the product to the packaging, it's clear that Ralphy has a disdain for this effort. It's refreshing to come across an honest opinion not chained by a conflict of interest. It's what keeps me coming back to his reviews, and buying his recommendations. His most recent whiskey of the years have been spot on. Long live Ralphy.

It would be interesting to have a historical look at the rise/drop in distilleries using coloring and/or chill filtering in the last decade as a result of reviewers like yourself and distilleries who market their craft presentation prominently like Ardbeg, Springbank, and Bruichladdich. Certainly the customer notices NCA and NCF, though maybe not the consumer.
Looking forward to some Armagnac reviews Ralfy!

Greetings Mr Ralfy, had to search your channel and glad that I found this. I've got a discounted offer for this single malt in Aus down from $349 to $229, it is sitting in my basket and I wasn't sure if I should buy it or not, this one is 46.7% and I think I will pass and not get excited by this offer. I only had 12 year old and must admit , I didn't like it, I kept it for almost 3 years and just recently finished the bottle but even after this long I still didn't like it. Thank you again for enlightening us as always. I believe they listedn to you and now nee box is different and bumped up the ABV 😅

I have two words for the wise for you. First, if you change the "eye line" of your camera meaning you want to leave the camera with your eye line. Right now it has you looking down at your viewers, and it gives you a different feeling for the viewer then if you are looking straight at them.
Also if you go to your "Creator Studio" button in your upper right-hand corner. Then go down to the "Channel" button and finally the "Branding" button you will be able to add your own branding logo. The logo will let your views to subscribe to your page easier.

Great review Ralfy. What an appallingly designed bottle container. I agree that it should never have been approved! It reminds me of the Lagavulin 8 Year Old which has a very thin card base, too thin to hold the weight of the bottle. It is as you say "unfit for purpose". I ended up sticking sellotape at the bottom of mine to prevent the bottle following through and landing up on the floor.
I have actually never had a Jura I liked. I am looking forward to you suggesting an independant bottling which you would recommend.
Well, the Jewish festival of Pesach is over (at least in Israel), and it is back to whisky after a week's break. I must say that the Louis Royer VSOP cognac I bought for the festive meals was most delicious and certainly made the whisky intermission extremely tolerable.

I agree with the review and many of the comments: Jura is overhyped, overpriced, and underwhelming. I have a bottle of Superstition that I purchased in a more naive time. I can't bring myself to open it, but at least the bottle looks nice in my display case. All that said, though, I do have a 26 yr old Jura from SMWS that I'm quite looking forward to trying one day.

First malt I ever bought was the Jura 10, coz it was cheap. It put me off single malts till I tried an Islay. Now have a little collection of about 20 bottles. The Jura is at the back of the cupboard and is my go to dram - for hot toddies!

I bought a bottle of Monkey Shoulder when I was first getting into scotch. It was pleasant enough for a while, but I soon grew tired of it. I used what was left in the bottle to make premixed Old Fashioneds. May just do the same with Superstition.

ralfy, i absolutley love your reviews, the honesty and clarity from your chats and rants are what i settle down to of an evening, and even better with a dram (fyi i also have an idea because i would love to send you a sample of my solera bottle and get you to review it, but anyway), but please can you tell me more about barrells, specifically oloroso barrels because my unserstanding is that this is never a 'sweet' sherry by definition, so how does the barrel impart sweetness?
also, are we saying paterson is a twat?

actually, i should say, the most interesting whisky i have tasted in recent times was the shackleton replica whisky, so maybe he is purely good at blending different malts rather than making a single malts, so maybe you could also do a vid showing the different trchniques used in making your normal blends and mixing malts to make a character single malt?

Sad thing is I remember the Jura I was getting 15 years ago was excellent. The old Jura 10 was complex and strong and more like something between lagavullin and Talisker. I have been eyeballing this 21 for a while, but after having purchased several jura's recently, they seem FLAT for lack of a better term. Not bad, but not great compared to what is out there. Ralphy hits the mark on this one.

  • @johnsaia9739
    @johnsaia9739 7 лет назад

Ralfy, I would be very disappointed if I put down that kind of money for a caramel colored whiskey that was aged in overused and tired out barrels. I wonder if they also need to review how they are making their mash and how well they are quality checking the high wines before aging. They would also do themselves a YUUUGE favor and order 100 or so new once used Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey barrels along with some new once used Sherry casks. Take those old, musty, spent barrels and have a nice bonfire with them. LOL!

Agree entirely. Without mentioning any individual (although I'm sure you can guess) I do not wish to purchase a whisky from any of the following distilleries: Jura, Dalmore or Fettercairn. Why? Because they are overpriced and underwhelming to put it politely. To be honest, I'm thinking of stating my point less politely if I come across one of the above malts again in the near future.

Also not normally a fan of many European whiskies as they are using small Holstein stills which don't deliver the quality and complexity of traditional large Scottish pot stills. this langatun however is genuinely Interesting and that's coming from a Euro whisky sceptic

Personally, I don't have an issue with chill filtration, or caramel coloring. But that packaging was a terrible idea.

The problem with Jura is the coloring and the low proof. The style of this could be a really good dram, but the way they are presenting it makes it nearly impossible to get much value for the money.

Ralphy, don't deprive yourself (and us) of a creepy wave when it is mandated! Onto sherry... you described this as being sherried with "generic Oloroso." I'm going to say that all Oloroso, for the moment, is generic! I can't get away from it! Scotch is always sweet enough for me from the bourbon casks alone. Time to use more Fino or dry Amontillado I think. Know of any good examples?

  • @alexharrington44

The two saddest things I’ve learnt on my whisky journey is that Jura was the best selling single malt in the UK in 2021 and the way W&M reps at festivals dismiss any sort of feedback about their whisky if you pass on comments about integrity, to the point of being rude and abrasive when all you’re trying to do is relay your honest opinions as a drinker who’s made paid their money to go to these events and done their whisky apprenticeship to reach that conclusion. They’ve also taken to Facebook to belittle and shut down people with an opinion that’s not sparkling about their brands and to push Dalmore as an ‘investment’. The distain W&M have for engaged and enlightened malt mates is very unpleasant and a real stain on the industry, in my opinion.

Bought a bottle of Superstition end of last year. Smelt of wet carpet and tasted like fishy cardboard, a la corked wine. Considered sending them the bottle with a note but of course couldn't be bothered in the end and tipped it down the sink. Will be avoiding for the foreseeable because of that.

Superstition going back 5 years maybe was a really great value whisky, they clearly used a lot of old whisky and was a real bargain - now it is thin and a pale shadow

chrish12345 .. Agreed, spot on. the Superstition of several years back wasn't bad at all but recent renditions have suffered terribly. Kind of sad...Jura is a distillery/malt that I WANT to like. Lets hope they see/read/learn from reviews like this and make the appropriate corrections. I had been eyeballing the 21 year old, wondering if I needed to go up a step to get back to the quality... thanks Ralfy, you saved me well over a £100 (closer to $200 where I live)... I DO have a couple of independent bottlings Jura. I'll look forward to cracking them in the future...

Bought a Carn Mor independent bottling of Jura 14 yr old. It is the worst Scotch I've tasted. I think it's off or something. It has a bit of a puke note to it. Cost me $120 Canadian. Should have bought some Ardbeg 10 instead....

I tried this one recently during a tasting, and I was quite disappointed as well; not worth the price in my opinion. However, for a cheaper price, I enjoy the Tastival versions (bottled at higher strenght, non chill filtered and no caramel). I bought the 2015 bottling when I visited Jura, and I like it.

  • @MrMolinari

You do realise that taste and smell is subjective? Someone would give this whisky a 80, some would give it 90 and some would say it's a 100. Nobody is wrong or right. Ralphy might not like it but someone else might absolutely love it.

    • @Sheriff_GrimLaw
      @Sheriff_GrimLaw 5 лет назад

I would suggest that they would love it more if it didn't have brown dye, chill-filtering and a higher abv. - especially for a whisky of this age/price. x

Good honest review of an over priced ,substandard ( again bearing the price and age in mind) product . Perhaps Jura should concentrate on what's in the bottle rather than how it appears and is presented.
    Thanks Ralfy
