This review could not be more spot on. The layers, the unique scent & flavor elements, the change between first sip and evdntual acclimation. A real experience - a malt moment of magnificent mien.
I wanted something different, and Springbank delivered spectacularly.
Thanks, Ralfy.
this review was spot on! drank along and tasted every flavor he described. 5 stars Ralfy
I could listen to this man review whiskey for hours. I'll admit, I'm a whiskey tribe member and I love having a laugh with the Texas boys, but if I want to have an honestly emotional experience with a whiskey, I turn to Ralfy. Well done sir. You ought to record meditation coaching sessions! 😁
I don't need a malt mark (this comment going out to my fellow commenters)...
I bought a bottle and I find that it is very special... it is great.
When I first tried the Springbank 10 (with a just opened bottle and with my not so experienced taste) first smell and taste neat was less perfect than I expected... then I added water (at least a teaspoon, for a Dram) and I told friends it seemed to magically transform and it became so wonderful, so many great flavors.
That great experience I have (after adding some water) for me is a 92/100 type experience.
Thanks.
. . . words of wisdom !
Never thought I I'd hear my malt mention being mentioned! Kinda feels like I've won something. Cheers Ralfy!
During the pandemic I started my malt journey. Today I had my first glass of Springbank 10. I added now and then a tiny drop of water. And wow! This whisky has more than one bliss point. One of my - many - notes is old cheese in the after taste. One of the best whiskies I had so far.
By the way: the smokey note on the nose reminded me a tiny bit of the smokey note in the nose of... the JW Red Label (!).
Having finished my first Springbank 10, it is truly a wonderful dram. You are very correct, I have been a novices to Single malt for 3, going 4 years now, and this is the expression to branch out and explore more complex, and tasty whiskies. Truly love this one. Looking forward to purchasing more from this distillery. Thanks Ralfy!
Great vlog Ralfy. Springbank is really something special. They focus on the quality of their product and nothing else. Cheers mate!
In my state we have a Liquor Control Commission. They determine what can be sold in our state and how much it will cost. For years I’ve been told that Springbank was not on the approved list. I was surprised to find a single bottle of Springbank 10 year old had just arrived at my favorite shop today. They were just as surprised and a little confused. I generously took it off their hands. Thought I’d open it up and enjoy it along with Ralfy’s review tonight.
This story does get even better. They also had one other surprise in a recent shipment. They received a single bottle of Glenlivet Nadurra that they did not order. Generally I wouldn’t buy such a thing as they tend to be NAS. This one however is a 16 year old cask strength example. It’s non chill-filtered and 60.2% ABV. Life can be awesome sometimes.
Glad to see you mention that, "...some of the younger available bottles can represent the best that a distillery has to offer." I've recently come across one such bottling- Glencadam 10 year old. Bottled at 46%, un-chill filtered, with its natural coloring. One of my newer favorite Highland single malts. Best of all is the Price- $32.00 at CostCo in Santa Barbara! Super value on an excellent scotch.
Big thanks for this video review, Ralfy - it informed my decision to try Springbank 10. What a revelation! For me, its price tag was a barrier, but I can see what the shouting is about. The word "divine" comes to mind. I'm saving up to buy a bottle-sized safe fitted with a time-lock.
I saw a bottle of Springbank 10 on the shelf at a hotel bar I stayed at regularly in St. Louis.
Never heard of it but so glad I tried it. Continued to order it each time I stayed there. A great whisky.
Oh my my my THIS IS A SPARKLER...... Finally popped and got a bottle of this tonight for the first time. Just a LOAD of sensations and flavor notes. EVERYTHING you said I pick up and register SPECIFICALLY and YOU DO NOT BORE IN YOUR STREAM OF DESCRIPTORS!!!!!!!! I took your advice and oh what a wonderful MALT MOMENT it is. I indeed pushed past my comfort zone and found this GEMSTONE OF CAMPBELTOWN!!!!
Thanks so much Ralfy!
. . . happy to share !
Just bought a bottle of this tonight. $65 USD. I’d argue it may be worth almost twice as much in terms of over all quality and flavor. And you Ralfy are why I bought this. I know you love Springbank and thought I should follow those who know better than I. I saw this review AFTER I bought this whisky. You have a very refined palate. I’m not getting everything you are but I do know it’s absolutely delicious!
These are the best reviews, when he's good and pissed. Love it!
Thanks for the rereview Ralfy. Nothing else to say that you haven't said a truly fabulous distillery producing t
A truly fabulous range of whiskies.
Rally,
I would love for you to do a video on travelling to different regions. I'm going to Speyside in a few months and would love to hear your advice on which distillery tours are best, where to stay, etc. Cheers. Love your reviews.
I really enjoyed your Springbank tour. It was what attracted my eye way back when. Any chance of taking the time to doing that sort of thing again?
I have just bought and will review the Hazelburn 8 (discontinued). This Springbank is definitely on the list. I am writing to the local alcohol monopoly to ask that they stock Springbank and not more chill filtered, coloured mass produced pish
God bless ya Ralfy, thumbs up for 'explore life' sentiments.
Looking forward to seeing videos of your Bonneville trip.
You teach us as much about life as you do about whisky!
A smashing whiskey. I bought my first bottle at the weekend after having sampled a few drams in various pubs. Upon opening though the cork broke (well crumbled) and, despite my best efforts to remove the remaining quarter of the cork it fell in. I almost cried! Couldn't be bothered driving an hour back to the off licence so my Springbank 10 now resides in a Laphroaig bottle. All offending bits of cork removed :)
I'm loving you're videos Ralphy thank you for all of you're reviews. I like you're insight and the way that you explaine the spirits in depth. Usually I look to you're reviews before I buy anything. Thank you for u for the good work and I was wondering if you can do a short series of aperitifs I'm interested to hear a review of yen raki, uzo, vermouth, grappa i.e.
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments.
Springbank and the Arran..my two favorites !
Agreed. One of the best standard bottlings of any distillary
Ralfy, you forgot the malt mark? 91/100
Ralfy, thank you so much for recommending this whisky mate 👌👌🙏
I've never had a chance to try anything from Springbank, mainly because it's rarely available where I live, but I found a bottle of 10 y.o. a few days ago and opened it this evening. Before it even had a chance to decently air out, I ordered another bottle while it's still in stock. One to drink and one to keep.
Hi Ralfy. Do you have a recomendation for some whisky. I realy love the Lagavulin 16y. Love the smoky taste
Ralfy, I got to try a bottle of Springbank 10 tonight. I also picked up Glendronach Alardice 18, and special Jim Beam un-chilled filtered bottled at 50 abv, a vatting of 5-6years old. Oh boy I'm spioled for choice as you say. Springbank is more fresh fruit to me. Apple, white grape juice, some pear and peach, and a good deal of all the berries that I was made to pick as a kid for jams, pies, and somtimes for wine. There's some of the smell of a blown out candle on the taate, on the finish rather. And a little bit of bourbon barrel abd vanilla all the way through. Ralfy, your right, Springbank is something else.
A favourite of mine, this and the 15 are two of my always in my collection drams. Honest whisky too.
Have you ever tried the Mitchell's Blend? Brutal stuff but I love that too.
ralfy tell me the malt mark before i go and buy a crate of red label! i am warning you!
I wish I could like this comment twice.
I believe Ralfy gave this one a 91... Check out Ralfy's Review Spreadsheet here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10W4NsnxrsspKHaejwVRKSoac6WFhreEyWwdPE3F3NDE/edit?type=view&gid=0&f=true&sortcolid=-1&sortasc=true&rowsperpage=500#gid=0
Cheers!
HaHaa! That is some bad blended scotch
He gives it 89 or 90,which he reveals in another Springbank review cant quite remember which one!
91!!
Hi Ralfy, thanks for a great re-review. I have become quite familiar with the 10 yo Springbank, and I was thinking whether to try the 12 yo Green or the 15 yo next. I believe they are quite different, which one would you recommend if you'd have to choose one?
This is my favorite in their range that I've tried. Better than springbanks double the cost on my opinion. Love it, one of my all time favorites.
Rally, how does this compare to the Springbank 12yo CS you recently reviewed both in general and the "umami" aspect that was present in the 12yo CS?
I'm having a "drink for the Enlightenment" right now and by heck I'm pleased that I'm improving the world. Springbank 10 is a great whisky. It's the benchmark dram even for Springbank. (Shhhhh, quiet, I think it every bit as good as their older standard bottlings.) Just my opinion Malt Mates.
Hi Ralfy! have you tried batch 50 of the aberlour a'bunadh? and if so, what do you think about it? :D
Thanks again for another great review Ralfy! 👍. Side question... When you add your water do you typically use an alkaline water (that you explained in a previous video) or tap?
Thanks in advance...and good luck at Bonneville!!
. . . I dont add alkaline water very often unless the malt is really acidic.
I saw that you made a review of some supermarket branded malts.
I tried the co-operative 12 yo Highland single malt and I have to say I quite enjoyed it.
I would like to see a review from you of that cheap interesting malt, in order to see if my taste is quite right or completely out of the range. Thanks.
Hi Ralfy - I suggest reviewing the Benromach Sassicaia Finish if you can find it!
I am going to have to re-visit and re-think my bottle of 10 YO Springbank because, for me, the 10 YO is tougher than the 15 (which I notice hasn't been reviewed) and the 18 - both of which are sublime.
Are we looking forward to the Kilkerran 12 YO?
Ralfy, do you have any plans on reviewing any Texas bourbons? I would like to hear your thoughts on Garrison Brothers.
Sprang for the 15 today meself for my first Springbank. Lot of barbecue(hickory wood smoke) on this one! Fantastic! Worth the extra cost here in the US, but probably not too often! The light peat smoke was there when I popped the cork, but I covered the glass for about 45 minutes as I was busy. It transformed into classic wood smoke! Excellent whisky. I plain old do not like peated whisky(after about 12 years of serious whisky drinking and many attempts to acquire that particular taste) and was happy to find this really isn't one. Great stuff. I will be going for 10 as well in the coming months. Only one shop with 40 miles carries Springbank and I got the second to last bottle of 15 on the shelf. It has been on the shelf forever though. To be honest I had looked at the Springbank before but was unwilling to take the risk given the US prices($59.99 for the 10 here and $93.00 for the 15). So glad I came across your plethora of Springbank videos.
. . . happy to help with the malt-moments !
I always have a bottle of Springbank 10 on the shelf. It is brilliant. Any plans to review the Longrow 18 year old? It's currently my favourite.
Ralfy is killing us with the maltmark 😂
You look much younger Ralfy. Good job!
Malt of the year? I really like this whisky and for sure a good point off reverence. I bought a bottle on your recommendation for springbank whisky's and i like it very much. Can you tell what the batchnr is, so you have a better reverence?
Isn't it time for re-re-review of Springbank 10? I just bought my forat Springbank 10 today, it took me 67£ to do so, but I simply couldn't resist. And funny enough, my bottle is dated on March 2020. just before great COVID 19 madness in Europe. It will be very nice to try it, but I'd like to do so with your fresh notes Ralfy. Cheers to that!
.Just brought my second bottle yesterday. .hard to find. They went with a redesign and more simple. Love it but wish they went for a canister! This bottle is more diverse then when I bought in 2014.
random question ralf but in review 48 is that a bottle of buckfast on your table?
Hi Ralfy. Would love to see you do a video on "Building a Basic Whisk(e)y Collection", or some other such title. Perhaps not so much a list of specific distilleries or brands, as availability can vary so very much from country to country. Maybe more of a list of types or categories, a la "a top-notch Speyside, a good Islay, a wheated Bourbon, a special edition or two, a solid rye, a good Blended, etc."....Just a thought.
"notes...593!" lol :D we love you ralfy! epic!
Hello there Ralfy from Greece! I have been watching your videos the past year and started to learn about whiskey from you!I really thank you very much. I have tasted about 20 drums and i have read about many more. I really enjoy Highland Park 12 as an introduction to next level, when i go out i drink Glenfiddich 12 cause is affordable and easy to drink but i want you, to suggest me the best REPRESENTATIVE in your opinion whiskeys by region. I think my kind of whiskey is a little peated but i want to taste the represenative types from all scotish regions. In my list there are Springbank 10, Glenlivet 15, Balvenie Double wood 12, Bunnahabhain 12. I really dont like the Macallan whiskey and the lagavulin. I hope you make a video with suggestions by region so a new taster can have an idea of the whole picture. Thank you for journey Ralf!
Does anybody know what The springbank bottling codes stand for? Xx/xxx, The first IS The batch/year but last IS not The date.
No worries about the calories Ralfy. after all, it's not chill filtered....you get a bit of protein in that as well! Looking good mate. keep up the awesome work.
by your description sounds similar to old pulteney? do they have similar qualities?
my first springbank thx to ralfy but for sure not the last one top malt for your money
Just got a bottle of this here on the West Coast of Florida. Haven't seen this for about a year.
Now it's back. Early last year this was selling for $ 65.00. Tis now $100 !
Still a superlative malt but ...?
Hope Clynelish 14 doesn't follow...
How ya ralfy quick question sprinkbank 15 cud u review plz
Picked up a bottle today and just poured a wee dram for myself.
Hello again malt friend. I just picked this up yesterday. Your reaction to the sip at 10:23 was basically all I needed. I choice from Campbeltown for my collection. I find it very similar to Clynelish 14. Am I on the mark?
Yes, the flinty, lemony, mineral notes are a nod towards Clynelish, and it is even similar to Brora in many respects!
No malt mark means that this is ralfys No. 1 of all whiskys out there, both price and quality.
Be safe on the race, Ralfy !
Ralfy! I need your help! What is you opinion about Ballantine's Finest? I'm thinking of buying but I heard its about the same quality as Famous Grouse and I really didn't like that one.
Words say enough, no Malt Mark necessary, I think ;)
Next to the Bruichladdich Ten for me this is the best 10yo malt available!
Hi Ralphy, I've decided to review you. I hope your sense of humour is as strong as the cask strength scotch you like so much.
The Box
Modest, simple, but how many of us enjoy drinking our scotch in a rural outhouse?
The Nose
Problematic, chips, grease, congealed fats, B.O. Would you sit beside him on a bus? Not on you Nellie. His manky coat looks as if it escaped from a charity shop in the 70s.
First taste
Surprising, not at all like Rab C. Nesbit. Educated, articulate, perfect grammar, this is an academic in schemie's clothing. Probably a teacher or a lawyer in an earlier
incarnation. Strangely addictive. Downright engaging.
People who are existing but no really living. Such a good way of describing people who haven’t had Springbank yet.
Ralfy: Will there be any videos on location at Bonneville?
I purchased my 1st bottle with the new packaging. It doesn't taste the way I remember. It's good but I definitely remember it differently
no malt mark?or is it the same with the original review?
Ralfy, do you ever enjoy a whiskey soda? I have developed a lovely relationship with the drink and it is a good way to keep off the weight!
Time for a 2020 re-review, ralfy?
Wow you have lost a lot of weight looking good Ralfy
Awesome whiskey you get so much for the price out performing its age .
Will you be filming out on location in Bonneville.
I just tried a bottle of the 10 y/o, for the first time, to celebrate my wife's promotion at work. It's definitely a fine whisky, one of the best.
Ralfy looking like he could compete in the Olympics just now he's looking ripped! ;)
Ralf, some of the more recent batches are absolute belters - you should revise this supposed "entry level" - its as good as kilkerran 12
Ralfy, why no malt mark?
I just tried this stuff. It's awesome!
Ralfy, hope all's going well over in Bonneville :) This or Clynelish 14? I am one of the two year, 'newbies', you refer to in the vlog; and as they seem to both be quite distinct and 'characterful' malts, which would you recommend I gave a try? Thanks
I have tried Glenfarclas 12 and definitely thought it tasted more 'musty', rich and had more Earthy tones than other whiskies I have tried. - possibly the dunnage storing and fired stills?
. . . this one ! and look out for Benromach's too !
@@ralfydotcom Do you mean "BenRiach 10?
Springbank 10 makes a great boilermaker. I like it with Coopers Sparkling Ale.
Was so glad to finally find Springbank….but i paid over $100 for it 🥺….but Wow, it’s fabulous. Underrated but for the money i think Jura 10 is better--very similar flavor profile and peat PPM
Springbank rules!
What's the malt mark?
I think he means like something for comparasion. Because Springbank 10 has been so consistent over the years, and it's very unique for a standard 10 year. So you can use it as benchmark to compare other standard malts. I have yet to find a better standard 10 year that isn't independently bottled. Love to hear if there is a better one
Ralfy, how come you taste this entire list of things? Is it experience, or do you taste many things on the side so that you could recognize them more?
. . . patience, practice and perseverance !
I see. Well that won't be a problem with so many great whiskies to discover. Cheers!
I had big expectations for this one. It was a little pricy here for a 10 yo, but not terribly so. Most whiskies cheaper to it are not non-chill filtered, ~46 ABV and natural colour.
I was dissapointed though. It didn't have an unpleasant taste, but it was a little bit flavourless in my mouth. Tastes vary. Every time I sipped it I expected something to happen, but nothing. Obviously it got a little bit better when the bottle had been allowed to breath, but the change wasn't very big.
Great review. And you look great! Keep up the healthy (balanced) life style!
. . . aw thanks malt-mate !
I finally got to taste Springbank and it is like you said - "a lot is going on in the bottle" especially when you don't rush it. It's not my person taste but it is a great whisky. Btw, what's your opinion on Wolfburn? For me it got one of the most interesting "nose"
. . . Wolfburn has an experienced whisky maker, and I anticipate good things in the future !
I believe Ralfy delays the malt Mark because it is exceptionally high.. I would say over 95 I think he's making sure ..between 95-96
what's the malt mark???? 😉
I went to the ScotchwhiskyAuctions.Com ,got myself registered, paid the registration fee. Started bidding on the Springbank whiskey and found out that Canada is not on the list of countries eligible for whiskey shipping. Very sad. I had my hopes up for nothing.
That's a sad realization that all Canadians will eventually shed a tear about. I know I have.
Just asking. Why would Glencaddam not be the marker for unchill filtered and natural colour?
. . . Springbank have committed to this for decades, they were and are the gold-standard.
Hi, Ralfy! Just opened a bottle of Springbank 10 with my husband and enjoyed our experience! In you review, you mention you have a Facebook page, but I can't seem to find it. Could you please give me the link or more information? We are fans & have been since we started our whisky journey last year. Thank you!! Jen
. . . Facebook page is 'ralfy' . and happy to help with the malt-moments !
ralfydotcom Found you on Facebook & Twitter and my husband and I are following! Thank you! Jen & Jason in Georgia, USA
I'm guessing 91 out of a 100 on this one Ralfy, maybe 92? Fantastic stuff! It's a bit expensive for my budget but my cardiologist has me down to one or two whiskies a week so it's all about quality not quantity, and I like to support Springbank as well. Take care!
That makes at least three of us, Ossie. I smelled a 91/100 a couple minutes in :-)
I've been watching Ralf's reviews for a long time now so usually I'm within a point or two. Fun stuff!
Ha yeah I'm pretty good at predicting his scores as well - I just wish I had the nose and taste buds he does to get all that out of each whisky. Oh well I hope it comes with experience as its only my first year really trying out all sorts of whiskies. I have this Springbank 10 sitting there unopened as yet, but I can't wait to get round to it as I love the 12 CS and the Longrow peated.
I'm relatively new to Scotch whisky and enjoy it more than bourbon, and thank's to Ralfy I know why. Bourbon is put into new oak barrels and the taste is a bit too much for me, whereas Scotch is put into used barrels. I've recently tried Pikesville 110 proof rye and found it a delight. For being bottle at 55% it needs very little water. Great to be on this malt journey with terrific malt mates! Enjoy that Springbank!
Finally got round to opening this tonight. There is nothing like a Springbank, its unbelievably complex and I'll take a while to get to know it; but its absolutely superb! :D
i dont know if the race is over but please, no accident! Did not buy a picture to see you being hurt!
All the best from germany!
Ralfy, AM I crazy or is the standard bottling of Longrow a non age statement whiskey? Any insight as to why?
The standard Longrow is a NAS. It's the Longrow Peated but buy with confidence. It's really very good indeed.
Seconded. It's obviously young when smelling but tastes older.
(Not that I bother, but) First time without malt mark? Would you like to explain why?
. . . answer in the next review !
They say alcohol has "empty" calories because it has no nutrients. But a good whisky can be a nutrient to the spirit.
Will you be posting video of your Bonneville adventure?
. . . yes !
fun fact, Ralfy: although there are less calories/gram of carbohydrates than fat, a high fat/low carb diet will actually lead to greater weight loss than the inverse!
