When short, my hair is an acceptable mix of frizz and curl. But it MUST be cut frequently or the old problems return. And now add the more wirey texture of grey hair into the mix. Now I want to try the Wash and Go technique. Based on your EXCELLENT video, I’m thinking I’m 3c, 4a, maybe some 4b, porous and thin in some spots from damage over the years. It’s definitely worth the effort and who knows; my new growth may make me proud! I wish we had historically understood our unique beauty. Thank you so much 😊! After all, better late than never!

This was really helpful, especially for a girl who's not black/mixed but has naturally curly hair!! My hair definitely ranges from 3c-4a depending on the day! Thank you so much!!
I think the only people I've ever seen with no curly hair and naturally straight were Asians and Native Americans. I've seen every other race white, black, or mixed race (latinos) with curly hair. Except I think I've never seen a Indian with curly hair either.
I don't get why people react so strongly about someone not accurately describing their hair. If they say 2a curly hair, you know what they mean... Personally I didn't even know the difference and thought that "slightly curly hair" was a good catch all while figuring my hair out (might be because second language and all). I've seen so much backlash at people, like "your hair is not curly!", "don't say you have curls, it's just wavy!"... where is that outrage coming from?
@@tf7602 well when people with waves say they have curls it's simply incorrect. i have 3a curls and i also don't go around talking about how hard to manage my kinky hair is because i simply don't have kinky hair. it's just so annoying because they are trying to claim something they don't have.
T F well, curly hair, especially in the United States was frowned upon. Today it is glorified. Curly hair is a unique traits of the blacks; the majority thereof. There are some blacks who don’t have curly hair and some who’s hair rages from 1-4. I’ll give you this example, I had my hair in a protective style cornrows the other day, someone complimented and said nice dreadlocks. I had to tell them it was cornrows. We can go on.
Oh! All hair is good hair unless you burned it up, die it to death, flat ironed it dead, and permed it suicide.. All want healthy hair, and if it is not healthy and falling out then it does not matter what type is in your head. Remember all hair has the potential to be damaged and fall out..
Evangeline! Thanks for saying that. That is what I always say. All hair is good if it is healthy. It felt weird for me to hear people tell me that I have good hair as if their hair is bad. If my hair is so good, why do they complain about how dirty my hair was? Hahaha! My hair did get dirty faster than I can make it in every 2 weeks in the beauty salon! They did not know how to handle my hair in those days.
munelight mine is like 2a on top, the underneath hair is 2b, and my new hair on the sides, are like 2c, and sometimes even 3a. So I’ll probably get more curls when I get older.
Im asian so my hair is 1a...Sometimes I wished I had 4a to 4c hair (but I also like my straight asian hair). My hair is so straight people think I straighten my hair. I have a friend who's 50% white, 25% black, and 25% asian and his hair goes from 2c in the back to 3c/4a in the front and he somehow makes it work. PS: thank you sooo much for this video, for it has allowed me to further understand myself and others!
In the 70s, my mom used to perm my straight hair into tight curls because it was "easier" to take care of. I remember the smelly, horrible chemical process and hated it (I was like 4-5 years old). In the 80s I had curly haired friends who would literally press their hair with a clothes iron to get straight hair. Today, I say embrace what you've got! All hair types are gorgeous.
Weird because I think straight hair is easier. My sister has silky smooth straight hair. She gets up and goes and doesn’t need to comb it. It just stays right in place. Even after a shower. She doesn’t need to blow dry it. She only trims it.
I have multi personality hair which means one moment it can be curly and second after wavy and right after to have straight hair I have 1 2a 2b 2c 3a 3b 3c all of them it's depends on the day when I washed it when it's oily or dry etc I have a complicated hair
Omg nooooo i use oil when i straighten my hair!!!!! That’s why I noticed a difference that my hair has gotten straighter and thinner when it’s not even straightened!!! OMG I WISH I SAW THIS VIDEO EARLIER!!!! I JUST RUINED MY HAIRRRR!!! ILYSM AND IM GONNA STOP DOING THAT❤️
Where’s all my people with hella different hair textures that are noticeably different. I personally have 2b in the back of my head. On the front it’s naturally straight. 3c and 4a in the top and I thing 4b in a small spot on my crown.
Queen Of The Blue My hair is a 4a around my hair line and gradually gets looser (2c) as you get closer to my crown. I have medium, shoulder length hair.
Thank you for explaining that you can have more than 1 texture because I never use heat on my hair and I get annoyed that some of it is type 1 and some are 2b. I thought I had damage somehow. Explains a lot, thank you!
Your hair looks amazing. I love it. Great explanation of the chart. It was good to let ppl know that they can have multiple hair types. Its also good you mentioned that density plays a role as well. Did I say your hair was amaze-balls???
I have very thick, high density, wavy hair, it takes well to curling, straightening, and color and doesn't give me much problems other than being hot in the summer. According to your chart thing I have a mix of all the 2 hair and a bit of 1 and 3a tossed in.
Hey Angela Christine. I hate the hair typing chart. Especially these new charts. I saw one chart that added synthetic hair curl patterns which is not realistic to real hair growing from a human head. This was a great video Angela.
I hate it too considering it was originally made for black women, but since other races' hair type just happen to be there the whole world is in included! 22.4.2020
I don't have anything above 2, but man, my hair changes all the time. Sometimes I'll have one strand of hair that is perfectly curled and the rest is straight? 😂🤷
I feel you, mine also changes within one strand, because it is so long, that it goes 2a to b to c from top to bottom and the very bottom usually does a little curl if I put styling product in it... problem is, gel is too much for the top and middle parts, but great for the bottom, foamy styling products are too light to define the bottom properly :/ haven't found the right thing yet
@@mslita09 Lol that's actually a compliment for us black women with natural hair because usually other people would prefer to see us with straight hair depending on the person and I don't think Anonymous 1 was trying to tell us what we should like but that's actually nice to hear that people love seeing natural hair for what it is ☺
@@DeJa2001 Most people I've talked to think that straightened hair on Black people looks flat and weird. The only “straight” hair they've thought looked okay was tracks/wigs, but they know it's not real.
I used to straighten my hair daily and bleach it loads when I was 13-19 - it was so damaged. I then started getting depression real bad and I stopped caring for my hair, and in the past year or so it's started getting really curly, it was always thick, and frizzy, but I didn't realise it was actually curly because of all the damage I did to it. I'm coming up 24 and just starting to look into hair care for my hair type - I think I'm in the 3s (Not sure where), but I'm sure I'll know more when I get a silicone and sulphate free shampoo and conditioner (I found some, my next hair wash will be with it), and when I do the other things people recommend for curly hair :) Can't wait to have natural, healthy, curly hair :D
I have the straightest hair on the planet. Perms do nothing...even professional perms. I blame it on my northeastern Native American genes cause I don’t have much body hair either...lol...makes shaving easier to! While I really wish I could get some body or curl, I’m kinda glad I don’t because honestly... I’m so lazy when it comes to haircare. I think keeping it natural is best. Nature loves variety & we are all perfect the way we are. Doesn’t mean jazzing it up sometimes isn’t good...yeah it’s fun! I just love when women keep it natural. Power to the natural beauty we all have and thank you nature for the wide variety!! Hugs my luvs!! Oh and lady, you are absolutely stunning!!
Rebecca Mead I have very wavy hair but it's style resistant, too because it is coarse and I think that is from my Native genes, too. So I get to have all different issues from different races lol.
Bun Bun WTF is wrong with you? If you don’t care, don’t reply...simple as that! Nobody asked anyone to reply to begin with yet people replied. You can’t stop me from sharing my comments because you’re being a hater. Stop trolling & find something important to add to the conversation instead of being rude for no reason. Or maybe get some therapy cause you might need it. (That isn’t a dig, it’s just a recommendation to help you)
WTF U TALKIN BOUT FROM YA NATIVE GENES??? WHERE DA HELL DO U THINK U CAME FROM???? ALL OF UR GENES R NATIVE!!!!! WHEN U SPEAK BOUT NATIVE U TALKIN BOUT PALE PPL WIT STRAIGHT DOG HAIR ETC.....BUT UMMM BLACK PPL ARE NATIVES AS WELL MY CHILD. U REALLY SHOULD LEARN WHO U REALLY R...SMGDH
wildstyle203 wildstyle203 are you talking to both of us or specifically me? Cause I’m no idiot when it comes to that! My best friend happens to be Choctaw & I fully understand. This is unnecessarily becoming racist & there was never any intention or desire to go down that road. It was a simple comment about hair texture with no additional intentions. Some natives have straight thin hair & some have kinky curly hair like my niece of a Cherokee tribe. I personally find mother nature’s variety beautiful. So please take your anger elsewhere. There are plenty of racist haters out there to focus on!
Team Type 4 (a-c mixed texture types) AKA The Living Bush/Chia Pet unite! I adore my poof. I named it Fluffy. It’s better now that it’s long (shoulder length) so ladies with this hair type please hold on! Honestly I feel like our hair is uncharted territory and surprisingly easy once you gain length believe me I have a lot of it. The trick is holding on to transitioning styles (box braids are your best friends! No rubber at the roots though!). A Deva Cut helps massively. Look for a stylist that has type 4 hair. In my experience most are in NJ and Maryland. It took a while to accept my textures because they range from 4c in the outer edges to 4b and 4a at random in the middle and at the top it is all 3c- 4a. Since the textures are highly resistant meaning they don’t blend in with each other at all flat twists and any other style is better than wash and go. Wash and go’s look better now that the hair is long but I looked a hot mess before because the shrinkage was extremely uneven everywhere. Still WnG’s are not the best look for this hair I think. If anything it’s the biggest disservice to it, especially if you have a lot of it. My mom said big hair is always coveted and a sign of youth and health. So she always pushed me to embrace it and tell my fellow hairy friends that there’s a reason why the extension and balding industries are in high demand. Spread the love and the positivity. So yeah our hair might not be flowing and smooth, but it has more than enough personality to make anyone unforgettable.
I do not care for the hair typing charts but they do give you a guideline. But I Love Love the way you do your tutorials in your other videos. Thank you :)
My hair is all of these. All of these. All of them. 😂 it's annoying. I can legit review hair products for you based on how it treats the various ancestors on my head.
Nyanna Ross girl, YES! Thought I was the only one. I have never seen straight stands of hair on other 4 type hair people. And the back of my hair is in the high 3's. What is wrong with my head 😂😂
This videowas actually really helpful. I have been looking for many videos like this and all the other RUclipsrs do is go off topic or not explain in the right manner. I learned a lot from this video and I am looking forward to seeing more of them.
This was so helpful. My hair is thick and naturally curly. It’s weird. I don’t quite fall into any definitive spectrum because my dad is Native American. Like 100% Choctaw and my mom is black. It still makes it insane to control my hair so i usually keep it short and wrap it and get it flat ironed. Recently i began just wetting it and letting the natural curls go but without the right products, it wasn’t living its best life. I’ve been watching videos more and idk whyyyyy i hadn’t began this journey sooner. People always say “you have good hair” but like you said, it’s the hair care that makes hair good. I’m on my way to good hair! Thank you!!!❤️
You've explained this so thoroughly. And having watched the video, I know now that I have a mix of the 2a-3b section type of hair. I'm on the hair road to recovery tho. Trying to get those gorgeous curls back I've ruined lol XD.
@Angela C Styles...Glad to see u doin ur own thing! K K lost a great stylist! Your natural hair texture is BEAUTIFUL! Didn't know that u were on RUclips. Did I just subscribe? Why yes I did! Go on girl!
You said to look at the roots and that's my natural hair, for some yes, but definitely not me. My roots are like 2b but after like 3 inches they turn into 2c for like 2 inches and then the rest 3a. so I normally never have volume which I struggle with everyday. Anyone else struggle with this and have advice!?
Same. My roots are almost straight but the rest of my hair is 3b. All advice I can give is to root clip while drying and use a hair pick to fluff roots when dry.
Mine’s exactly the same. Roots are 2b and then my ends are between 2c and 3a (depends on different things. I also just cut it so it’s not weighed down as much so I have more 3a showing) You just have to take all the tips and tricks and just focus them on the different sections.
Angela...I love your wrap-up at the end. It was honest, real and encouraging. It was cute how you handled it. I really enjoyed your video, and found it helpful. I am saving it in my hair videos.
Destini Jackson, my middle son is a 1 and a 4b! Talk about different ends of the spectrum! He has blonde/dirty blonde hair that looks straight but when you get in it, it’s thick and has the 4b hair underneath! I never knew how to describe it to people but now I do. I’m thankful I found this video.
BEST VIDEO ON RUclips IN REGARDS TO THE HAIR CHART!!! TO THE POINT, EDUCATIONAL, NOT OVERLY DRAMATIC 13.48 MINUTES FELT LIKE 5. PLEASE TAKE HEED PEOPLE...TOO MUCH TALKING ABOUT YOURSELF OR COMEDY RELIEF CAN BE A TURN OFF FOR THOSE WHO JUST WANT THE FACTS!!! EXCELLENT VIDEO! KEEP UP THE GREAT PRESENTATIONS.
I’m not even Black. I’m actually Indian but i live in the US, and I’m watching this video cus my sister’s hair is SO GOD DAMN CURLY. I literally can’t find any products for her so I gotta find what hair type she is. Ended up reaching here. Her shrinkage is terrible, and I found out she’s a mix between 3C and 4A.
After hearing many people refer to their hair type using this chart and not having a clue what it meant, I now know I have mostly 2c hair. Thanks for the informative video!

Your hair is just nappy. 4c is trash.

You're so dang lucky...
Yesss
Weird because I think straight hair is easier. My sister has silky smooth straight hair. She gets up and goes and doesn’t need to comb it. It just stays right in place. Even after a shower. She doesn’t need to blow dry it. She only trims it.

Your hair looks lovely, Angela. Yassss hunty. So does your skin. ❤️❤️✨✨

Anonymous 1 That's a matter of opinion. People are allowed to like whatever hair they like.
I wear my hair to please myself, not to increase my sexiness to others.
Anonymous 1 oh thank you 😊
@@mslita09 Lol that's actually a compliment for us black women with natural hair because usually other people would prefer to see us with straight hair depending on the person and I don't think Anonymous 1 was trying to tell us what we should like but that's actually nice to hear that people love seeing natural hair for what it is ☺
@@DeJa2001 Most people I've talked to think that straightened hair on Black people looks flat and weird.
Rebecca Mead okay? No one asked
Bun Bun WTF is wrong with you? If you don’t care, don’t reply...simple as that! Nobody asked anyone to reply to begin with yet people replied. wildstyle203 wildstyle203 are you talking to both of us or specifically me?

This may sound a bite weird but I just realized that black people hair curls just like human DNA

Thank you!!!❤️
I have a mixture on the same strand. My hair will be 4b but curl like the 4a example at the ends.
Guava Pastries same. Mine is a 2A at the start but easily a 2C at the ends
Guava Pastries and any short hairs are a 3A minimum

You said to look at the roots and that's my natural hair, for some yes, but definitely not me. My roots are like 2b but after like 3 inches they turn into 2c for like 2 inches and then the rest 3a. so I normally never have volume which I struggle with everyday. Anyone else struggle with this and have advice!?
Same. My roots are almost straight but the rest of my hair is 3b. All advice I can give is to root clip while drying and use a hair pick to fluff roots when dry.
@@deirdrec4295 ty, I'll try this
My hair is 2A on the top 2 inches, then 2B and ends are 2C I wish it was all 2C
it's because length makes your hair looser or tighten due to weight.
Mine’s exactly the same. Roots are 2b and then my ends are between 2c and 3a (depends on different things. I also just cut it so it’s not weighed down as much so I have more 3a showing)
You just have to take all the tips and tricks and just focus them on the different sections.
