I'm a newbie i dont know if you already have a video on how to detangle and lock in moisture in type 4 hair. My hair shrinks alot and dont keep and styles. I can't sleep it down. And my edges keep breaking. Please help
On video on trimming and cutting natural hair on self or someone else. What scissors u use, where u get them, cut on dry or wet hair etc... Love your work&growth
You should do something about the dangers of crochets braids...although I do love em and get them done to my head often, I notice depending on who I let do my hair it feels like when I take these out ama have a "problem"(un-usual breakage). Some people are just ruff and destructive. So I wanted to know is their a right and wrong way to do crochet? They seem so easy to do anybody can do them.
This is hands down, the BEST description of 4A, 4B and 4C, Periodt! I’m tired of following people that leave me confused, your thorough knowledge and understanding of hair textures and maintenance, is a breath of fresh air!
Kristina Marie i agree ... i know i have 4a hair and mine looks nothing like those photos .. also she said 4a hair doesn’t break easily ughhh 4a or 3c hair still breaks off any hair that isn’t moisturized will break up and i use large amounts of oil idk why she thinks 4/a or anything before that use light amounts of oil lol
Nikki Raton according to the naturallycurly website they said 3c is the pencil while 4a is a crochet needle or smaller. I’m also so confused about my type😭
I have 4B hair, however the front is 4A. Growing up, I hated my hair because of the shrinkage, and how it was so hard to do. However, now I am in love with my hair, and I love being natural, and above all, I love being a black woman♥️

Interesting. Thank you for sharing. Just a couple questions though- you say we need to know our texture, formation, density, elasticity and porosity...and I can’t really tell if you’re agreeing or disagreeing with this video. So how do we figure all that out? Or is this video an accurate way of discovering those things? Thank you in advance!
I can’t figure out my formation. My hair is naturally very shiny. It’s not fine and wets pretty easily. I believe it’s medium porosity but my hair will NOT air dry in an hour. One side of my hair is deep waves, the other side is loose curly ringlets, the front inch fluffs with no definable curl and the back is a soft, silky, tighter curl (like what the video shows as 4A). I can’t figure out what each section needs in order to ever let my curls loose. I always have it braided or twisted because of this.
Exactly and that's what causes me to pull and rack through my hair carelessly cause I get tired of combing & brushing knots. That's why I be trying to find good products for my hair to help with detangling...my patience ran tf out! Lmao
I don't have a hair type to tell, I'm white with a pixie cut but I came here to learn and be educated on black women's (and men's) hair types. They are all so beautiful and I have yet to see a black person's hair I didn't like. You have beautiful hair and a beauty that shines from the inside all the way out

I’m half white & half arab and have thick, fine hair. Growing up my hair was way tighter, probably in the 3b-3c range. As i got older it went to a 2c-3a range. I’ve been braiding my hair and others my whole life (the hair of others is in the 4 range) and never knew these scales. So helpful! Especially, the part about moisture retention! Thank you 🙏🏼
I tell you one thing, I'm not big chopping that 3c portion in the front of my hair ever again. I have been pressured into thinking I have heat damage in the front and thats not the case.
@princess_urama who said they weren't? It's just odd that they always add that they are white. It's weird. It's about hair. Why does your race matter, and why feel the need to add that?
FINALLY ALL THE GIRLS IN MY CLASS WILL STOP TALKING ABOUT HOW THEIR HAIR IS 4C WHEN ITS CURLY!!! I did cheer and one of the girls was CONFUSED why my hair wasnt slicking back and she was like its not that hard you just don't takr care of your hair. And that was 1 untrue and she had 3c hair so.... And this one horrible day I walk into class only to see a girl over here saying oh yea ur hairs 4c and all. I was so mad bc I did have 4c and I felt SO insecure bc theirs was SO CURLY and I felt like mine was constantly damaged... But all's good!😊
I'm mixed race... My hair is a mix or 4a and 4b. I need water and A LOT of gel to get a 4a appearance. But if I just wash it and use no product its just afro bush 😂🤣 My hairs about 14 inches stretched, but shrinks to about 6/7 when wet
@@itsjustme1728 well it is. Mixed race equals a (mix) of 2 or more races, e.g.: black and white, Asian and black, or even black, white, and asian (all at once). Do your research before you make a comment. Google "mixed race" and educate yourself. I say this in the kindest way possible.👍🏽
I'm also mixed! I thought I was gonna be the only mixed person in these comments lol My hair is mixed as well and I think mine is 4b and 4c or possibly 4c cause in its natural state i can't get my fingers let alone a comb or brush through my hair. It's a nightmare from hell! My hair also is hard to moisturize because it's low porosity and seems to drink oils like nothing with the only oil able to last for 2 days max is oil sheen spray. It really works best when used daily. I also have dry scalp so that does not help my hair at all >_
I was today years old when I found out I had 4A/4B hair. I thought I was 4C. I've been natural for over a year and I love it! So much healthier and grows much faster. I use Mielle organics and Cantu. After I style it I always put a little coconut oil on it as well to maintain its moisture and sheen.
Girl you PREACHED when it came to 4C hair!!! I almost passed the collection plate and got my shout on. But this video gave me more confidence, thank you!
This was AMAZING!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have 4B hair while one of my sister has 4A and the other has 4C and we've always wondered why we couldnt do the same things with our hair and why our fros looked so different when we did the same things. This was such an eye opener and I honestly wish more people made videos like this!
This is one of the more detailed and engaging video's that I have seen. Thanks for making this! S/O from a South African sista living in the UK, the struggle is REEEAALL!
4c, low density, fine - wasn’t always this way. I’m 60 now - after menopause at age 40 - everything about my hair changed (like a cancer patient going through chemotherapy). I’ve never heard it explained so clearly - thank you so much 😊
@@SanctifiedLady Just because she's never had cancer doesn't mean she doesn't know what happens during chemotherapy. I've never had cancer, but my mother has and I can attest that her hair fell out and grew back much thinner. This is common knowledge. btw estrogen increases risk of cancer
I understood more about my hair in this video than i did in the other 20 videos I've watched. Great work , thank you. Im 4c ,thick density and coarse . I strugled with my hair for the longest time. Im growing my fro and enjoying it. You just gained a follower.🥰🥰
This was the best “hair typing” video I have ever seen!!! I have watched quite a bit, but you explained and had clear photos with each explanation! Loved it. I now see that I have 4B with some 4A textured hair. Thanks!😉
Sis, with my 4c hair I can’t even get it into a poinytail, I’m so glad I watched this. My hair looked like to shrunk well it did and I noticed that my hair was still growing it just didn’t look like that. I was so relieved seeing this video
Breanna, this is a great video, but I would suggest you linger more on the images, reverting to voice over, as opposed to showing yourself so much. It was hard to study all of the hair types you so beautifully are describing because you kept cutting back to yourself too fast. Thank you for this great content, nonetheless. You have done a good job.
Well done vid. As a 40+ year old woman, I've discovered that aging, diet and certain medications have affected my hair over the years. I've had to take supplements to restore hair balance. So, diet, the aging process, and medications/health conditions are all things to keep in mind when taking care of one's hair health. 👍🏽
This was soo educational for me. I have fine, thin, 4a hair. On the other hand, my baby girl has thick, low perosity, 4c hair. I’m in love with her hair! She’ll be able to do everything I was never able to.
My curls look like 4A curls when defined with gel but my hair shrinks about 60% once it dries.....so annoying when wanting to wear it out because it doesn't suit my facial structure. I just look like a chia pet but my puffs be 🔥
Kree Ol6 no she don’t .when 4c hairs dries it looks almost like cotton if you go really near them you can see the coils .I have 4a hair and when my hair is wet is is like a 3c but as soon as it dries the curls are still there but the hair gets really voluminous . People mistake dry hair for 4c hair al the times but that’s not the case
I’m 3c/4a, fine, high density, low porosity, and it’s naturally really soft. For a while after my big chop, I thought I was 4b and I was totally fine with that. I did the porosity test and found out I was low porosity. After that I started making moisturizer my priority. Soon my hair started to loosen and hang. The tangles I struggled with also started to lessen. Deep conditioning weekly with my heated drier saved my Sahara desert dry hair 😂. I love both type 3 and 4 hair types but I never really belonged to one. It was almost like my hair was too tight for 3 and too loose for 4. Not to mention whenever I went on to comments of people with my hair type saying they were 4a, they got all kinds of hate! I get hair type can be important but let’s stop acting like one is better than the other! Spread love guys! It’s okay if your hair is a tad bit tighter than someone. Not all type 4 hair looks the same. All of our hair defies the European beauty standards of straight long hair! We need to stick together! Our curls have created a community that makes us feel like we don’t have to change ourselves for anyone! Please if you feel the urge to put someone down because of the way they look, take a minute to understand the pain that they already have felt at some point. And realize if you are the one that wants to make them feel it again.
I have 4c hair and I used to (still do) want 4b or 4a because of the length and I will admit I’m jealous cause y’all get to wear your natural hair out and about and mine has to stay in braids
You can totally still wear your natural hair out. I do and I have 4C hair. Don’t let more Eurocentric beauty standards sway you this deeply! Your hair is beautiful natural and in braids :)
4A hair here and it goes from silky straight to a cotton ball fluff the very second some humidity/water/wetness gets near it. My braids are costly and they never last more than a month. 1 week my hair tries to fight for freedom. 3 weeks of me saying I paid $200+ and you staying up. Smh. Hair struggles for us all. 😫
My 4a/4b type of hair tangles, my curl intertwine, I get knots at the end of my hair, I retain length, but it only grows to my collar bone. The shrinkage is real, and my hairstyle can last for a week when I leave it alone. Sometimes, I reset it to refresh my curls.
Currently transitioning and addicted to my curly roots! This clip is so helpful and clearly explained, thank you! I think I have either/both 4a and 4b hair..
Wow I need help I thought I was 4c all this time. Lol had no clue I was 4A Thank you so much for the class. Also much love 💘 to ALL THE NATURAL TEXTURES 💕 . WE ROCK
I’m type 4D (Yes it’s off the scale so I have to extended said scale.) Really, really extremely coily. 💜 My hair density is thick, thicker and thickest. 🤷♀️ Hair texture : Yes, it is coarse, coarser and the coarsest! 😏 Density/texture is thick/coarse, all the way up to thickest/coarsest. Porosity is low to high. There is no in between! Thanks for sharing. Very informative especially how to do porosity evaluations. 💙
Hazel H mine is extremely thick especially after I blow dry it,I’ve gotten perms my entire life so my hair is straight most of time and the only time it’s curly is whenever i take out my braids,My cousin told me that I have 4c hair but I doubt it🤣🤦🏾♀️,my hair is always dry and never moisturized
I have 4b hair and man the shrinkage is real! But then I loove it! 🙌🏾 I thank God for blessing me with such patterns 💕 4B Medium density (thick and thin) Thin cours hair Medium porosity I use water, olive oil and jojoba oil, shea butter (makes my hair thick), aloe Vera and hair food pomade.
OMG!!! We have the EXACT hair across the board. I have 4b hair for mostly 85% of my head. My crown top part is 4a/3c mixture. Medium density. Texture (thin/fine). Medium/normal porosity. Products: olive, jojoba, coconut, argan. aloe Vera oils. Wakati, Mane n Tail, Kenra, Mizani, Joico and The Mane Choice Ancient Egyptian. Of course, Olaplex treatment biweekly. Hair is no longer blonde but still use Olaplex for bond replacements, repair, strengthening and moisture.
Thank u, thank u, thank u for explaining the differences in curl patterns, especially between 4b and 4c. For the longest time, I didn’t know if I was one or the other. Now I know I’m mostly 4c in my crown with a touch of 4b on the sides and back. The visual explanation of actual curls vs coils helped, also. Nicely done.
This video was very informative. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable insight! I've been natural since 2014 and I learned more about my hair type in this 20-minute video than I have the past six years.
Very very good explanation. In my childhood, my hair seemed strictly dense 4c . 2 yrs ago I shaved all my hair off and consistently deep conditioned. My hair grew really quickly with a combination of 4a,b and c allover my head.
I am 45 years old and just now trying to transition out of relaxed hair and learning my "type" of hair. this 4C on my head has been soooooo difficult to accept and manage. now I have breakage. This video was very informative and will help me along my natural hair transition journey
i can detangle my hair and 1 hour later it’s dry as hell and back to normal(I have 4c/4b). this is my biggest pet peeve especially bc im going natural for quarantine
I don't have the hair types mentioned but it's still really interesting to learn about and I really like watching these videos, diversity in the world is the spice of life!
Where were you young lady when I had to endure the awful spankings because with my 4c growing up there weren't any products around then to soften this stuff up. I was so tender headed still am today. Same (my hair was straightened in the pic) and I was raised in a white town in a white family and have always been so overwhelmed trying to figure out how to take care of my hair. Even just finding someone who could cut my hair is impossible. I need a mentor 😭
My 4c hair is so badly kept and I be watching these videos like I'm gonna do something about it, good routine btw! (My profile picture makes it look like I'm 12, it's like that for a reason lol)
This is one of the best videos iv seen explaining hair and str8 to the point... with this information, i realize i have 4C course thick, high density low porosity HAIR...😊

But all's good!😊
Omg send it to all of them in a group chat
This video was not only detailed but it kept me interested the whole time. Absolutely love it!
I have 4a with 4b on the top. Any water just makes it immediately curl. I love my hair never again will I perm it.
I'm mixed race... My hair is a mix or 4a and 4b.
I need water and A LOT of gel to get a 4a appearance.
But if I just wash it and use no product its just afro bush 😂🤣
My hairs about 14 inches stretched, but shrinks to about 6/7 when wet
Myself is mix and I think I have 4a and 4b.. So confuse and what to used on my hair.. Love the vid..
I don't think mixed is a race
I also have dry scalp so that does not help my hair at all >_
Príncipe Mahoma THE POLITENESS IN THIS COMMENT😭
My front, sides and back is 4b, the middle is 4c. I have hard time maintaining growth & length for the middle section. Very frustrating.
Same
Same
Same for me except my hair grows in the middle but breaks in the front, back and on the sides.
Preach!!! I have to be super careful moisturizing The crown😥
I'm majority 4c and some 4b however my shrinkage isn't as bad. Thick, corse hair with low porosity.
Same!!
How I found out I had high porosity... Was drinking water and choked on a strand that fell to the bottom of the cup....💀
Damn😂😂😂
LMAO
Yes Boo, the struggle is REAL & I feel u on that. I can relate. And u had me LMAO😉 But much appreciate yo realness!
😭😭😭

I feel like shedding a tear. You explained it so perfectly
Ebony Horn she did. Didn’t she
She really did.
Girl you PREACHED when it came to 4C hair!!! I almost passed the collection plate and got my shout on. But this video gave me more confidence, thank you!
Best natural hair education video I’ve ever seen, you deserve 5 stars and endless likes, Sis 👏🏽.
You’re lightskin whatever
@@aisha-3857 how is that related?
I have 4a and 4b. I loved how you’ve explained their pros and cons. It explains so much. I have fine, thick hair and low porosity.
What do you use on your Curls? I have 4a tuoe of hair this pic is a wig thou lol
Absolutely, 4C hair has GOT the MAGIC WAND!🌺
This is one of the more detailed and engaging video's that I have seen. Thanks for making this! S/O from a South African sista living in the UK, the struggle is REEEAALL!
4c, low density, fine - wasn’t always this way. I’m 60 now - after menopause at age 40 - everything about my hair changed (like a cancer patient going through chemotherapy). I’ve never heard it explained so clearly - thank you so much 😊
If you hadn’t had cancer, how can you say that just because your hair changed? All you needed was estrogen replacement…
@@SanctifiedLady Just because she's never had cancer doesn't mean she doesn't know what happens during chemotherapy. I've never had cancer, but my mother has and I can attest that her hair fell out and grew back much thinner. This is common knowledge. btw estrogen increases risk of cancer
@@SanctifiedLadyNot everybody wants to take the risk of HRT. 😒
I’m 4c 100% nothing else and it’s thick
That's nice. I wish my head was all 1 texture.

@Jasmine Aurora thank you xx
Yeah that "boring ass hair" comes with privilege so bye
Kayla Vernet bruh, idk what you’re talking about but if its about race, im asian -_-
I understood more about my hair in this video than i did in the other 20 videos I've watched.
Thanks!😉
Same here! I think I’m mostly 4b with the rest 4a. I might have a little 4c in some areas
Sis, with my 4c hair I can’t even get it into a poinytail, I’m so glad I watched this. My hair looked like to shrunk well it did and I noticed that my hair was still growing it just didn’t look like that. I was so relieved seeing this video
hey kurapika🔴🔴⛓
U can use thread to braid it after u can get into poinytail
Same
same....my hair keeps growing and it just keeps looking the same way sigh...
I agree, we’re all learning and really studying the images. Great job hearing all your knowledge
People having this issue, you could pause the video and possibly take screenshots as well
Well done vid. As a 40+ year old woman, I've discovered that aging, diet and certain medications have affected my hair over the years.
I've had to take supplements to restore hair balance. So, diet, the aging process, and medications/health conditions are all things to keep in mind when taking care of one's hair health. 👍🏽
This video was extremely informative.
Oh, I think my hair shrinkage is out of this world, I can't leave my hair out for more that 5minutes.
Even air shrinks my hair😂.
I'm 4c by the way.

Maybe you should try the gel plus jerri curl activator test.
This was soo educational for me. I have fine, thin, 4a hair. On the other hand, my baby girl has thick, low perosity, 4c hair. I’m in love with her hair! She’ll be able to do everything I was never able to.
This is the most detailed, informed and easy to understand video of hair information and I so appreciate that!
Thank you for focusing on the 4’s hair type
4c and 4b
My curls look like 4A curls when defined with gel but my hair shrinks about 60% once it dries.....so annoying when wanting to wear it out because it doesn't suit my facial structure. I just look like a chia pet but my puffs be 🔥
iyannika johnson lol me too! I hate it
You have 4c haur
Try drying with the cold setting on the dryer. That's what I do to keep the length when I wear it gel curled and out 👍🏾
Kree Ol6 no she don’t .when 4c hairs dries it looks almost like cotton if you go really near them you can see the coils .I have 4a hair and when my hair is wet is is like a 3c but as soon as it dries the curls are still there but the hair gets really voluminous . People mistake dry hair for 4c hair al the times but that’s not the case
Same my puffs really do be looking cute
I have 4b hair but I love my 4c brothers and sisters!
I now have a true understanding of my hair. I’m a 4c.
My 4a/4b type of hair tangles, my curl intertwine, I get knots at the end of my hair, I retain length, but it only grows to my collar bone. The shrinkage is real, and my hairstyle can last for a week when I leave it alone. Sometimes, I reset it to refresh my curls.
Angel amen girl
Angel same for me
Currently transitioning and addicted to my curly roots! This clip is so helpful and clearly explained, thank you! I think I have either/both 4a and 4b hair..
Starting my natural hair journey and this is the most helpful video I've seen about the type and porosity of natural hair. Thank you!
My hair density is thick, thicker and thickest. 🤷♀️
Hair texture : Yes, it is coarse, coarser and the coarsest! 😏
Density/texture is thick/coarse, all the way up to thickest/coarsest.
Honey 4z ugh the struggle is real...
There is a chart that goes up to 5d
Right I did the porosity check man my hair never left the top lol...
Yes mines too
I love how she explains every point! Makes me feel like I really understood my hair
I have 4c hair thank you for me finally knowing my hair type . you are a beauty.
“Type 4a hairstyles will typically last about 2days” Nahh It’s more like 2 hours 😭😭

That's all i needed to hear, that and the shrinkage 😂 I finally get it
i stg😂 can't hold nothinggg i just put mine in a big puff on the top or ill wear it down
I have 4b hair and man the shrinkage is real! But then I loove it! 🙌🏾 I thank God for blessing me with such patterns 💕
4B
Medium density (thick and thin)
Thin cours hair
Medium porosity
I use water, olive oil and jojoba oil, shea butter (makes my hair thick), aloe Vera and hair food pomade.
This is probably the most well explained video online about type 4 hair. Thank you I finally figured out which category my hair falls
Same as me 🙂 but I’m low porosity with fine strands, medium density.
Finally someone explains it best... all this time I though 4a curls were coils because of their size... knowledge!
This video was very informative. Thank you so much for sharing your valuable insight! I've been natural since 2014 and I learned more about my hair type in this 20-minute video than I have the past six years.
This was the clearest and most informative vid I've seen on this topic. You also have a beautiful spirit
I’m a 4B and everything you said is 100% accurate . Just been looking for the right products to really give my hair the shine and proper curl
Yeah I don’t like my 4c hair it literally makes me depressed :( but I tryy best to embrace it and help it
Very very good explanation. In my childhood, my hair seemed strictly dense 4c . 2 yrs ago I shaved all my hair off and consistently deep conditioned. My hair grew really quickly with a combination of 4a,b and c allover my head.
I’m mostly 4a, but the crown of my head is 3c while my edges and “kitchen” are 4b. Medium/normal porosity

Thank you for explaining how hair type relates to length retention. So many people argue that it’s not genetics that play a role in hair length and that it’s about hair care and what products you use.
