You Don't Have REAL 4C HAIR Sis! 🧐 | What 4c Hair Really Looks Like

  • What hair type 4c looks like dry, wet, stretched, with shrinkage, moisturized, and manipulated into hairstyles. This video shows 4c strands up close and compared against type 4b and 4a strands according to the Andre Walker Hair Typing System.
There are so many misconceptions about 4c hair in the natural hair community. It seems 4c hair is only identified as being real if it is in its dry state with no true curl or coil definition. The truth is, 4c hair does have a curl/coil pattern! It’s just a smaller diameter to 4a. I believe because 4c is last on the Hair Typing chart that people mistake it for 4b characteristics. 4b hair is described as having no curl/coil.
Also, hair porosity, density, environment, genetics and so many other factors play into what a person sees and experiments. Just some food for thought. I hope this videos sheds light on how diverse hair can be - even with the same hair type.

I’ve come to the conclusion that for most folks “4c” hair means dehydrated hair. Lol once people hydrate their hair and learn to capture the coils, curls, or waves they begin to question if the hair is really “4c”.

This just happened to me!! I've always called my hair 4xyz because it really always used to break combs when it was dry and just difficult. I never grew it and always relaxed right away. Well, I did twists and overloaded my hair with oils, butters, and moisture. When I had to wash, my hair was so soft and I saw definition. Shocked and confused me. Had me questioning my 4c status. Phew!!

@@myescape607 I mean if you check through her comments and listen to what she says you'll notice that she's infact against people saying 4c hair looks unhealthy unless it's defined and has proper shape. (she doesn't heart people that say stuff about 4c hair looking filthy/not properly washed/that they need to use moisturizer if it doesn't look like hers)
She's just providing tips on how to handle their 4c hair while also mentioning to keep in mind that every person is different and not everything applies to everyone which is a fair statement.
I am not an expert on hair and I personally don't have experience with 4c hair so I can't say "I know for a fact that everything she says are facts" but from a viewer perspective I got positive vibes from her, she seemed really friendly and caring and I do believe she had the best intentions with this video.

Your hair is obviously 4c. 4c hair has a coil pattern, it's just difficult to see from a distance because of how small the coils are. The coil pattern also gets more obvious when it's clumped with gel, finger detangling or even styling cream. I've also noticed that 4c hair can be trained; the more you wear wash and go styles (or basically styles that let your hair be in its natural coil pattern), the more obvious your coils become. I think we are so used to seeing 4c hair stretched that we have no idea what it really looks like when it is happy and shrunken.

I’m starting to Despise this hair typing system all together! A man created this chart that didn’t even acknowledge the coarsest hair type and he also recommended that Kinky hair should be relaxed. This Should Not be the basis for which we categorize our hair! I FINALLY understand why most professional stylist do not acknowledge or use this hair typing system! They simply assess their clients hair and proceed accordingly. My hair NEVER fit in any of the categories because it was never meant to..

My real issue with the "You're not 4C brigade" is that 1. They are claiming any one who has visible curls when their hair is soaking wet some how has a "desirable" hair texture. I don't know about ya'll but I don't walk around with soaking wet hair all day everyday. When I first went natural, most people looked at me sideways for daring to wear my natural hair un-manipulated, even other naturals who would pile products on their hair and manipulate it to no end. The same people who are now claiming that people with my hair texture/ curl pattern have a desirable hair texture are the same people who, a less than decade ago, would have told me I NEEDED a relaxer, or braids or a hot comb. i'm just wondering when any type of kinky hair suddenly became desirable. And let's keep it real; whose really desiring a slightly less kinky hair texture...doth protest too much. The obsession with hair length is what first turned me off about the natural hair community. I still cringe whenever someone thinks they are giving a compliment for a biological process that I have little control over. Then it was the so called "wash n go" that required no less than 10 products and an hour of your time before you could actually GO. The hair love is so fake.

Well many people (like myself) that have low porosity hair and aren’t able to retain much if any moisture at all in their hair and require the use of multiple products. And I don’t think moisturizing your hair is necessarily “manipulating” it either. I will admit that there are some people that pile products on top of their hair to achieve the “desirable” hair texture, but some also just need the extra products to keep their hair moisturized and hydrated.

    • @tybooskie
      @tybooskie 3 года назад +46

@@kelab4599 I have low porosity hair too. I didn't even use the word moisturize in my comment at all as that's just a given need for all hair; nor was I trying to imply that using product or manipulation your hair is bad or wrong. My point was that manipulation is not the only way to be natural and that not using tons of product is an option; even for SOME of us low porosity folks. I'm really just still bitter about all that time and money I wasted on greasy and crunchy "wash n go's" Now; I don't use daily or topical moisturizers because they don't work for me; all they did is fake the appearance and feel of truly moisturized hair. I grew up always having blue magic or pink lotion in my hair and only knowing what straight hair felt like without products. When I went natural I tried ALL of the products and my scalp hated me for it, so I had to choose my skin or a slick do. I choose my skin. It took about a month and a good trim for my hair to get with it but I haven't had dry or brittle hair since going styling product free. I do a deep conditioner every few months as the weather changes but I pretty much only use shampoo and trim as needed(like now). Anytime I've tried to use a gel or something I breakout so I stick with styles that don't require slick edges or that are easy to take down.(Cause I do love an updo; that isn't a wet bun). Low porosity works both ways; yes it's hard to get moisture in; but once it's in it pretty much stays in unless your are doing something to strip it. ( Pst.... I don't even wrap my hair or use a satin pillow case. Blasphemy..!!!! ) I know different people have different needs for their hair even if it looks and feels exactly the same. The early days of the natural hair community really did try to address that fact but could never fully separate aesthetics from hair care in a meaningful way. If you have found that layering products keeps your hair healthy; that's truly awesome. It took me years to figure out that I actually needed almost nothing; and it's mosyly because I was defeated from my skin being tore up all the time.
This was long; I am so sorry. I just didn't want you or anyone else to think I was trying to shame anyone's journey. There is enough of that. I've felt enough of that on my own. We all know that loving our natural hair isn't about being cute or trendy.

That's one reason I'm not to keep on this hair typing system. The truth is, I believe black people have more than one hair type. I have at least 3, the back of my head is a wavy kind of 3a, the middle of my head is 4c and the front and sides are 4a. I didn't mention 4b because it's seems 4b is just a mix of 4a and 4c.

I've come to the conclusion that porosity, density, hydration & length can alter the appearance of curl patterns. Along with products, manipulation, etc. I have thick strands but low density & low porosity hair. When my hair was short, my curls were compacted but now that my hair has hang time, my curls have "loosened"/ stretched out but I also drink more water, take better care of my body internally, & steam my hair as needed which I think also helped. Plus, some people have more than one type of curl pattern in their hair. All this to say, you shouldn't get so caught up on hair typing. Instead, focus on learning YOUR hair. Your hair is as unique as you & it will not be the same as someone else's hair; embrace that. It may look like your hair resembles somebody else's but it is still not the same. Great video queen😍

I know thank u ... the veterans of natural hair know that ! That was supposed to be the next level of the natural hair community but it got halted by mistyping of hair ( not that it is important but it misleads many) ... i saw a lady talk about silky 4c and non silky ... it opened my eyes that not even all 4c is same... there are so many factors...but the point is stop acting like its not a curl pattern ...4c is a curl pattern ... n then dont sit there and say its not 4c when i do a wash n go or its hanging down my back ... our hair is long n grows ! Just cuz we not sitting around trying to prove it to everyone by straightening it all the time dont mean its not long... 🤷🏾‍♀️ im 4c n i live this reality n it gets on my nerves lol

    PLEASE READ.
This video is growing and I’m getting a lot of comments that, in hindsight, I don’t think are kind. This video is about education backed with love and pride for our unique characteristics. I meant what I said at 2:02. This hair chart isn’t everything. If a person truly has a 4c pattern but it reacts differently there are a plethora of reasons why (stated in the video). Now.
The hair typing system isn’t the end all be all. I love the fact that Mr. Walker took the time to “start” a hair typing system, but I don’t think we should be so hung up on it. 🤷🏾‍♀️ I made this video a “tool” to help people find the right information for their hair.
Also, I’m choosing to refrain from using the term “4c Nazi” to describe people who strongly have opposing opinions
. I get the sentiment, but I think it can do more harm than good.
Honestly, I feel 4b women don’t get enough love. If a person’s hair doesn’t coil up or clump and they take good care of it, it’s very possible they have 4b. (Please hear me out)
4b has been classified (even by myself in the past) as being a pattern type that clumps coils/curls and has less shrinkage. I don’t believe that anymore.
I believe most get caught up in the natural progression of the chart (understandably) and forget that 4c wasn’t apart of the original chart and was tacked on at the end. When in reality it should have been placed before 4b and the strand types relabeled so that it matched the natural progression of the chart.
I no longer believe that clumping of the coils determines the difference between 4b and 4c, other factors do. A zig zagged pattern probably won’t clump in coils.
The LOIS Hair Typing System is more inclusive in my opinion. It leaves room for the fact that diameter of a curl or coil could (and probably does) vary past hair type 4a.
    LOIS HAIR TYPING: ruclips.net/video/xwMFG4lT4jY/видео.html
I also recognize that I did not personally ask Andre what he meant when he labeled 4b, this is my honest interpretation of what I see.
So all in all, I’m saying, I have compassion for those who have been miseducated or may not understand. I don’t want to call them Nazis because of the history of that word. I also don’t want to automatically state that if your hair doesn’t coil or clump it’s not well taken care of. We are unique and beautiful. Please watch the whole video before commenting.

I agree “4b” doesn’t get a lot of love. Ppl seem to forget that tight wavy is a hair type/curl pattern. This type needs a product that will clump the waves an example is @whatthekinky or @chocolatebeautycurls

    • @thedarknessofnana
      @thedarknessofnana 4 года назад +19

I totally agree! I was confused until about a year ago when I said ‘eff it’ because I have never had curls that clump. I have predominantly 4b zigzag micro waves. My hair is similar to a combination of Joy-el and VivHairTherapy’s. My hair only ‘clumps’ (and that is with ample effort) after it is longer than jaw-length unstretched, and it only ‘clumps’ at the ends, with about a tub of hair jelly in it. 😂
The roots of my hair grow zigzag and refuse to ever clump. I’m low porosity, so my hair literally never dries if I try a wash n go with a tub of product, so now I just rock my afro.
I used to always be confused as to why 4c hair had a curl pattern, yet 4b hair was a ziggle. That’s why I like The Green Beuty’s complete hair typing chart. Check her out if you haven’t heard of her. She takes hair texture, hair thickness, hair density, hair porosity, AND sebum production level into account for her hair typing chart.
That REALLY was a life saver for me, and helped me discover a good regimen for my hair. 😊

This shows how subjective the whole hair typing thing is which is why people seem so confused. Also I feel like based on the description, it would make more sense for 4b and 4c to be switched (since 4c is a super tight 4a while 4b is a whole different thing), but that’s just my opinion

I barely have 2b curls but Im here to learn. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your informative and positive video! I come from a culture that labels black peoples hair as "bad hair" all together, they just call it bad hair straight up. Its crazy to me nobody ever questions why that is and how racist it is. I started a hairdresser course and they never even mention any 4 hair type! They never teached me how to do any hair that wasnt straight or mildly wavy!! So many people just excluded or treated as less!
When I realized how unprepared and uneducated I was, with all this and so little representation or positive info on black hair, I decided that wether I end up as a hairdresser or not I want to be educated. I want to unlearn that bad racist stigma and learn about and appreciate the beauty of black hair! We may look very different and have very different struggles but I dont want to be indefferent just because they are not mine.

@@myescape607 Okay so your response gives me a bit of confusion. I'm assuming you are black given the context so PLEASE keep in mind that I'm trying to approach this respectfully and as someone who doesn't know that much about this. What I'm looking for as I respond to your comment is not a debate or to white-splain, I simply want to understand your point bc I don't completely get your comment and I want you to expand on your thinking
So first when I said afro I meant the hairstyle. When I think of afro as a hair type I thought that just applied to black hair (black as in the race of course). I was thinking afro comes from the word Africa. Essentially I was thinking "afro hairstyle" and "afro hair type" are separate, and that afro hair applies to black hair besides 4c hair. Do we have a different understanding of the word?
Also I'm assuming that you're basically saying that she does not have afro hair because she has curl definition in this video. Whether you are referring to hair capable of making an afro or 4c hair from what I can tell is irrelevant to your claim that she's wrong (again as far as I can tell from my interpretation of your comment)
What I got from the video is that she realizes she has a mix of textures which probably gives easily-recognizable curl definition in parts of her hair. This doesn't mean that all of her hair has that same amount of curl definition. Also from what I have seen, because black hair is so malleable, she can create curl definition where there wasn't any originally, and take it away when she doesn't want any. I think she said herself that 4c hair can be manipulated to give less definition. She also pointed out that her camera makes it look like she has more curl definition than she really does
So again I'm just looking to comprehend your comment because for me you didn't explain why those points she made were wrong in your opinion. To me it felt like she addressed what you mentioned

I love that you reiterate that hair typing is a guideline. I don't know why people obsess so much over the a,b or c, especially when most of us have multiple textures (curl patterns) on our head. Knowing that I have majority type 4 hair has helped me immensely in finding tips for my natural hair. I don't have any 4c curls in my head but I've been following you since your big chop and I've learned a lot. I just know my hair enough to know what is or is not relevant for me. 4c hair is so diverse. There are 4c naturals when they wet their hair their little coils pop. For me it doesn’t work like that. I have coily hair but it’s more Afro like (meaning barely any form of definition) so no matter if I finger detangle and use those brushes to get the coils to pop it doesn’t work. And I moisturize my hair and again it doesn’t work but hair just doesn’t do it and it’s fine. So yes 4c hair is very different for everyone!

I'm also a 4c hair owner, and I love it. My hair needs constant hydration followed by a sealant due to its low porosity on regular days. On wash day (once every 2 weeks) it needs the max hydration method, complete with deep conditioner under a heat cap. Winter is the hardest time to keep it hydrated because of the dry air. It loves the humidity in the summer. It took me a while to know what it needed to thrive. Not everyone knows what to do from day one. I still make mistakes, and when those happen I need to rely on a modified Cherry Lola method because I don't need as much protein.
