OMG I was really trying to figure why everyone’s 4C hair did not look mines. The 4C vs 4B explained a lot. My hair is different, it straight in some parts and then it’s a curl that doesn’t curl 🤷🏾♂️
Hair typing is essential for finding content. I went from 4C to 3C after chemo in 2020. Some go from type 1 to 2or3. They're called chemo curls. Turns out you can go from type 4 to 3. I was natural for 10 YEARS and maxed at 12 inches!! Now I'm only 8 months since hair started growing back and it's already 4 inches. It's still fine in texture, low density and high porosity as before. I can comb it with my fingers, it doesn't get tangles and knots at the end like my 4c hair did so I predict it will be easier for me to retain length this time.
@@babygirl_likestochewgum I do not think so. She just said her hair reached 12 inches and it was still 4c before chemo. Afterwards, it is now 4 inches which is shorter than before chemo.
This is true, before my mom passes im 2012 it happened to her during chemo treatment. All her 4B/C hair fell out, but when it started growing again it was bone straight. I thought she was exaggerating until I seen it with my own eyes. Chemo made her go from type 4 hair to 1.
Amazing story, I hope you are okay too. I encourage you to make videos to document your new hair journey! Inspirational & Educational at the same time!
Girl that hairstyle is 💣 ! You're so gorgeous !😍😍 I wish I could wear my hair like that too, but my scalp is so sensitive that I can't use hairpins for my hairstyles. I must confess that I still can't tell what is my hair type; for I have at least 3 different types of coils or curls. But I just embrace my crown the way she is. And Yes, my hair shrinks like crazy!!!🤗😂 Though somewhere around BSL, she shrinks up to my scalp when I let her dry (and she needs about 2 days to be fully dry, but the shrinkage is immediate😭) without any other form of stretching, and to my chin when I style in twists, and I'm not even kidding !😥 My shrinkage is real, especially in the middle of my head where I think I'm 4C or maybe 4B; I still can't tell the difference between these two, really😅😅😅.
I think it’s okay not to label it. These are just back pocket resources for those curious. If you’re happy with the way you’ve taken care of your hair, that’s all that matters. ☺️
I have looser curls like 3c/4a around my nape and edges, I have no definition or cotton-y/spongy type at the back of my head, I have wiry strands that don't bend or sleep or do anything, they have a mind of their own mixed all over my head especially, the front!😄
As time has gone on I realize that product recommendations from folks who have Type 4 hair with similar hair density and porosity as mine, helps me the most.
Don't forget hair texture. It took me the longest time to realise that watching people with coarse hair when I have mostly fine hair strands was doing me no favours!
Interesting video. I just recently figured out my hair was high porosity. I’m 4c, but my hair is very different than a lot of youtubers, & has it’s own unique problems. My hair immediate shrinks 70% with any kind of moisture & the only way to keep it stretched is with heat.
Same with me too. When I moisturize my hair it shrinks so bad. But to stretch it, I never use heat on my hair because I'm scared to damage it. I rather do the African stretching style by cutting my hair into medium sections and roll the hair yarn around up to the tip of my hair. When I remove the hair yarn the following day, my hair is beautifully stretch and I can do any hair style I want.
It's a great way to find hair that looks similar to yours so you understand what your hair will do. I watch a lot of content with other hair types and knowing my hair type keeps my expectations real.
I’m a white dude who has no interest in hairstyling but I’m fascinated with learning about other cultures (especially black culture). The “Type” categories of hair is a super niche topic but I’m loving your video and loving to learn about this stuff. This is some good quality content. Keep it up!
It makes absolutely no sense to me that 4b is represented as a zig zag and not a coil. I liked your explanation of why that may have happened. It should be a tighter coil than 4a and less tight than 4c. The zig zag pattern should be 4d or something. My hair is coily but doesn’t match 4a or 4c, I consider myself mostly 4b (curly, coily)
4A the back has coils. We may all have a little of everything in our hair but just the majority thank you I've gone natural and see that I have 4a. Thanks for a very informative video❤❤❤❤
I’ve always thought my hair was 4c, everything that everyone said applied to me, then when I found LaToya and is video, I got a little scared bc I didn’t know if my hair was actually 4c. But this video confirmed me and let me know that I indeed have typos 4c natural hair. Thanks LaToya 😊
I see different blogs and vlogs showing examples that look so wildly different for the same types that I think the range from 3c to type 4a or even 4b seems somewhat meaningless in general. This video just confirms that in so many ways. I'm not knocking anyone's channel or page, but frankly I feel like a lot of experts and professionals or influences are going to look at my hair and say different types and with so much confidence!
Wow, this was really informative and made me more comprehensive of my son’s hair! He’s 15 and I’m just starting to let him experiment with his hair which means we are starting to figure out how to style it. I was thinking of taking him to get it texturized so we could manage it better but I just realized we never really knew his hair texture
I just cut relaxer out of my hair after having a relaxer for 1 years. Previously, I had natural hair and a texturizer. Years ago , I grew out my pixie and got locs then , I cut my hair. I was wearing extensions. Now I’m back to natural. My hair is 2 inches. I really can’t tell what texture my hair is. It may be 4C/B. I will have to wait a few months to find out. When I cut my locs, I never paid attention to what category in my hair was in; I always said my hair is coil. It doesn’t matter, I love my hair.🥰
I really appreciate your channel, it's nice to see more people with my hair texture 😊 I just finding it hard to grow my edges. It took a while for the hair in the center of my head to grow also. I've being laughed at because my hair looked weird and not the usual kinky.
I have a hard time subscribing to this typing system because my hair isn’t really represented. I have tight s and z shaped waves. These wave are very apparent. My hair defines into this pattern, and it’s apparent when wet and dry. 🤷🏽♀️ I also find that this typing system doesn’t really provide much information or help for caring for caring for one’s hair.
Well the man who initially created the chart said people with 3c+ (I think he called it nappy or wooly or something, he didn’t say 3C-4C) should relax their hair. He didn’t include those types because in his mind hair is only acceptable when it is of a looser texture. So the chart doesn’t make sense because 3C onward were added by other people who weren’t really working from the initial creator’s framework. Also this chart does not encapsulate every hairtype imaginable, and as Latoya stated it does not consider things that affect the appearance of hair like texture, shine, density, strand thickness, etc. The chart doesn’t even mention that the shape of hair follicles is what determines the amount of curl a strand will have. Ultimately this hair typing system isn’t exact science and you should essentially treat it with great skepticism, especially if what you’re hair looks like doesn’t match what is presented in the chart.
@@glencora6340 no there was no 3C-4C and he recommended anyone with “nappy” hair relax. He didn’t call anything 3C-4C because those weren’t even hair types to him. There was 1A-3B and then just nappy hair. 🤷♂️
My hair is 4c,it shrinkes big time such that people even think I've cut it😂it always tricks people and I love it!and I will be like "this hair is Magic honey"

So helpful..I love wearing my hair natural but always want to make sure I'm using thr right products too for my hair and how often to use these products to help growth occur
75-80% shrinkage! I'd say the struggle is real but I'm no longer struggling. As soon as I embraced the shrinkage, the coils finally felt free to show up and shine.
I truly appreciate this video as an OG natural cause we were trying to figure this out and I thought I got my hair type right but I could never feel 100% sure. I so appreciate your video and I plan to pass it along to my subscribers so they too can get that great info. Thanks for this!

A new old subscriber, I'm about to binge all this quality content
Another misconception people have is that the type of products you use heavily depend on your curl pattern which is not true. This is helpful for what your hair can do :) For example: 4A and 4C hair can hold beautiful twist outs while if your like me and have 4B hair (which I just figured out today thanks to this videos and others) you will realize you cannot hold a twist out well and your hair looks so frizzy and a hot mess! Another example is if you have straight hair you cannot finger coil while finger coils work especially well with other textures. The only reason why knowing your texture is vital is to know how much moisture you need, white people and asians tend to need a spray on leave-in conditioner while black people tend to need a creamy leave-in conditioner but this can be affected by porosity and coarseness. Hope this is helpful because it was sure helpful to me :)
Oo mad shrinkage too. As I were my hair once its saturaterd cause, low porosity, it shrinks to half its length and once it dries like that, it shrinks more
Really I think of the hair typing system as severity of shrinkage. 4c hair shrink so much it’s literally insane. I never know how long someone’s hair is lol.
I see the reason why people would use a product to define curls on 4c hair and am not able to get curls with that same product My hair has no curls or coil wet or dried and it doesnt shrink much just a little ....gat me thinking why my 4c hair is so different from other 4c hair Now i know am really not 4c but 4b Thank you so much❤
Thank you for your video Queen I'm a black man that has very kinky hair and I always wanted to find out the difference between people who have more bigger curly hair and mine's being more kinkier
LaToya! This video is so GOOD! You're hair is like mine. You use the word "sponge" but I think of it more as "cotton" texture when it dries. I love the ringlets when its soaking wet. I just wish I was better at "capturing" them in a uniform way with styling products. The Goal. I am SO excited you are doing a wash n go soon. I NEED that now. I am ready to try. I did try 2 weeks ago but that doesn't count because it turned into a twist out! There were so many reasons, but mainly lack of skill! I couldn't believe how differently each section of my hair looked, like they didn't know each other! Lol! THANK YOU for this video!
Love this !!! Girl I’m still terrified of my shrinkage! My hair looks just like yours and I legit got nervous watching you let it dry out like that 😂😂😂
Tbh as a licensed cosmetologist. We didn’t study the curl patterns. I don’t know if they do it know (I graduated 2011) we just learned straight, curly and kinky back then.
@@atmodlee your hair isn’t 4A. The more you style especially if it’s a wash and go, the more you see your actual hair. For example, my hair has more coils than when I started wash and gos and softer .
This was the most detailed hair video i have ever seen. Gal your hair looks amazing💯🔥. My issue with my hair is that it doesn’t shrink, its the same before and after washing it. It’s natural even when I strengthen it the length never change 😭. Btw you look like Tia M of quick fix lol or sister sisters
Hi, this video is informative. I have shrinkage to when wash. But as soon as I twisted it's not as shrunken if that makes sense. I have different patterns in my hair too I think my back is more like a 4C it's more tighter and maybe my sides like a 4a or 3b not really sure it's lose on the sides in my front is loose also. That's just what I can see it's tough to know. I have to treat each section different when styling. OMG
You are a dazzling, super cool nerd 🤣🤣🤣😎😎😎🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗 Yes, I experience shrinkage. I have had to revamp my hair routine so often, it gets discouraging. I do try to keep it simple as possible, though. Seems every time I get CLOSE to serious length, splint ends keep me from maintaining it. Loved this video. Look forward to part 2🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I soooooo appreciate you for making this video! I was wondering what natural products I can make to maintain the stretch and keep it moisturized. I consistently get little balls at the end of my twisted hair even though I hydrate and massage it every day and drink a gallon of water. Thank you for making time to answer my inquiry. Immeasurable blessings!
My hair is mostly 4a with some 3c in the crown but I have a cousin who has the same hair type as you. I subscribed to you to get some Ideas for her hair she is 11 years old. Your hair is Beautiful and cannot wait to try some of your techniques! I am excited 🤗
🇬🇧🙋🏾♀️This was enlightening and reinforced the irrelevance of curl patterns! "4c" (or any other curl pattern) can look differently on different ppl, as you pointed out. We need to focus more on porosity and healthy regular hair routines. My hair is high porosity, low density, 4c. 80% shrinkage! Looser pattern in the nape. 🤷🏾♀️ Of all that info the porosity is what drives my hair care ☺️
I agree with this. Like most other things in life, hair is highly variable and has many factors, even if we correct for styling or technique that can make your hair look widely different from its natural appearance. The hair typing system was most useful for me as a new natural, when the goal was to see what my hair could do. When it comes to seeing what my hair SHOULD do, I pay attention to porosity and other texture related factors (like propensity for single strand knots, etc.) but not curl pattern.
Since the chart has a progression from loose to tight on the curl/wave continuum (in range 1-3), the natural progression of 4a, 4b, 4c is looser to tighter curl/coil as well. I consider this a pretty simple thing that we have complicated. We added the 4c category on the hair message forums (nicknamed C-napps) in the early to mid 2000’s to represent a curl pattern that is TIGHTER than 4b. I distinctly remember discussions of the 4b drawing representing the side view of our tight curl pattern stretched out (like a spring, resembling a “z pattern”).
Thank you for this video! It's very helpful. I big chopped not too long ago and am still trying to figure my hair out. I am pretty sure I'm type 4 but as my hair is growing I think the texture/strands are changing or maybe it's my curls getting longer so they are looking different - unclear. But I am loving this natural hair journey and love watching your content ❤︎
The longer it get the more stretched out the pattern becomes. When my hair was growing I thought I would have the same looking pattern but longer. But I didn't. It just became a tight wave. I just recently cut off a few inches and it's back being tightly coil.
I think a lot of people have several types of hair/curl patterns on one head and that’s another reason why there’s confusion. I literally have everything from 3b to 4c on my head, a yes whether it’s moisturized or not makes a huge difference in how it looks or whether there’s curl definition.
Am just here trying to keep my edges and hair moisturized.

OMG I was really trying to figure why everyone’s 4C hair did not look mines. The 4C vs 4B explained a lot. My hair is different, it straight in some parts and then it’s a curl that doesn’t curl 🤷🏾♂️
Type 4 (b, c) and shrinkage checking in. We mainly have several types on our heads. Great video!
I think that's just because when your hair gets longer the texture loosens, so you can go from 4a to 3c... but what do I know
@@babygirl_likestochewgum I do not think so.
I know someone who went from 1b to 3A after chemotherapy
I still like the Hair Typing system for Styling Looks purposes so you can see what a hairstyle could look like.
As time has gone on I realize that product recommendations from folks who have Type 4 hair with similar hair density and porosity as mine, helps me the most.
Don't forget hair texture. It took me the longest time to realise that watching people with coarse hair when I have mostly fine hair strands was doing me no favours!
@@fattysl26 So true!
Mine is a blend of 3c and 4A and some 4c I believe. Thank you ancestors!
It's a great way to find hair that looks similar to yours so you understand what your hair will do. I watch a lot of content with other hair types and knowing my hair type keeps my expectations real.
That’s my 4b hair type, a z design pattern, great interpretation of hair types.
Hair looks before and after old vs new. 💯🥰
I’m a white dude who has no interest in hairstyling but I’m fascinated with learning about other cultures (especially black culture). The “Type” categories of hair is a super niche topic but I’m loving your video and loving to learn about this stuff. This is some good quality content. Keep it up!
So i got 4c as well. This so cool to find out
It makes absolutely no sense to me that 4b is represented as a zig zag and not a coil. I liked your explanation of why that may have happened. It should be a tighter coil than 4a and less tight than 4c. The zig zag pattern should be 4d or something. My hair is coily but doesn’t match 4a or 4c, I consider myself mostly 4b (curly, coily)
Same
This is fascinating! I never knew there was a classification system for curly hair.
Girrrrl, at 15 you managing his hair? My boys cut me off at about 12 :) They are doing a great job. My one son even learned how to cut.
I think I have all 4bc textures in my hair with a little 4a. The front, back and sides are all different.
I definitely have all of type four rolling in my head ➰
And so many of us do boo! You are definitely not alone Cali!
I really appreciate your channel, it's nice to see more people with my hair texture 😊
I just finding it hard to grow my edges.
I also find that this typing system doesn’t really provide much information or help for caring for caring for one’s hair.
@@atmodlee
You are partially correct. He recommended Type 4 relax their hair. There was only 4A and 4B initially.
@@glencora6340 no there was no 3C-4C and he recommended anyone with “nappy” hair relax. He didn’t call anything 3C-4C because those weren’t even hair types to him. There was 1A-3B and then just nappy hair. 🤷♂️
@@atmodlee
He had 3A and 3B and 4A and 4B. The site Naturally Curly created 3C and 4C.
Btw you’re really pretty. You kinda look a bit like Nicki Minaj ☺️☺️
My hair is 4c,it shrinkes big time such that people even think I've cut it😂it always tricks people and I love it!and I will be like "this hair is Magic honey"
Girlllllllll THANK YOU!!! cuz the way I'm tryna learn, help and protect my daughter hair at the same time is at a all time HIGH😅!!!
Your hair is beautiful. Thanks for the video. I came here to determine what hair type I have and I just realized I probably have them all.😃
In most definitely thin small coils and zig zags. My curls don’t define easily my much like zig zag. Sometimes my crown appears kinda straight buts curly I don’t know so confusing. All I know it’s 4type. This was absolutely excellent!
Best explanation of hair porosity ever! You go girl! I'm awaiting part 2.
Did I say porosity I meant texture and curl types
So helpful..I love wearing my hair natural but always want to make sure I'm using thr right products too for my hair and how often to use these products to help growth occur
I have 1 A hair, pretty fine. it's interesting to see the curl patterns visualized and systematized.
That’s so beautiful to hear. Thank you so much! ❤️
My hair doesn't seem to fit any place on this system but I really enjoyed the video and your voice!
I remember watching your videos yearssss ago in my early undergrad days but I didnt have a youtube account to subscribe and lost touch with your content. Fast forward till now I was googling some things for my hair and your wonderful video showed up! I was and currently am superrrr ecstatic! A new old subscriber, I'm about to binge all this quality content
Yay!! Welcome back! Happy to have you❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video. Your voice was very soothing.
As I were my hair once its saturaterd cause, low porosity, it shrinks to half its length and once it dries like that, it shrinks more
I’m a transitioning natural, I’ve always been confused by this hair chart lol. Great video!
Really I think of the hair typing system as severity of shrinkage. 4c hair shrink so much it’s literally insane. I never know how long someone’s hair is lol.
I see the reason why people would use a product to define curls on 4c hair and am not able to get curls with that same product
My hair has no curls or coil wet or dried and it doesnt shrink much just a little ....gat me thinking why my 4c hair is so different from other 4c hair
Now i know am really not 4c but 4b
Thank you so much❤
This was very informative and basically tells me I pretty much have 2 or 3 patterns on my big ol head 🤣
Haha! Most of us do!!
um you broke it down like nobody else 😮💨
I absolutely appreciate your video! I have finally found the hair type in your video that I can identify and feel less confused about! ❤
Thank you for your video Queen I'm a black man that has very kinky hair and I always wanted to find out the difference between people who have more bigger curly hair and mine's being more kinkier
I’m a 4c girl I hated my hair when I was younger now I Love love it.
it’s so thick and full.
I’m excited you are going to try again! I used the world “spongy” because that the texture I have based on the LOIS hair typing system. ☺️
You are such a vibe, love your energy plus, you are gorgeous. You sort of favor Essence Atkins. Great video!
Thank you! 🥰
Such an interesting video!! You explained everything very clearly :)
Thank you for the effort! ♡
Love this !!! Girl I’m still terrified of my shrinkage! My hair looks just like yours and I legit got nervous watching you let it dry out like that 😂😂😂
Ah and I really enjoyed your need way to explain the hair types... ❤
Tbh as a licensed cosmetologist. We didn’t study the curl patterns. I don’t know if they do it know (I graduated 2011) we just learned straight, curly and kinky back then.
Excellent and informative. I agree with what you said about the curl progression and how that confuses people. Great video!
The gentleman had the most highly defined hair I’ve seen for his curl type. Can anyone drop his @ so I can get this routine
Tik Tok: @leemfrm38
But his hair looks like that due to genetics, you can't get his hair through a routine.
Is it possible for my hair to be 4A but with styling/stretching come to resemble 3C loose curls? Or is my hair not 4A?
Very possible
@@atmodlee your hair isn’t 4A. The more you style especially if it’s a wash and go, the more you see your actual hair. For example, my hair has more coils than when I started wash and gos and softer .
you have such a soothing voice 🥰
I loved your video! Your voice is pretty pleasant to hear!!! Kisses from Brazil!!! 💚💛
Seeing you for the first time. Love your energy!
Welcome to my channel!! ❤️
At this point I'm 4z, cuz I can barely see a curl pattern on my head
I can relate on sooo many levels 🥰😅
I agree with this. Like most other things in life, hair is highly variable and has many factors, even if we correct for styling or technique that can make your hair look widely different from its natural appearance.
The hair typing system was most useful for me as a new natural, when the goal was to see what my hair could do. When it comes to seeing what my hair SHOULD do, I pay attention to porosity and other texture related factors (like propensity for single strand knots, etc.) but not curl pattern.
This video was awesome. Well detailed and thoroughly researched. Kudos 👏🏼
So educative I now know what my hair type is. Thank you so much ❤️
this is an amazing video thank u so much for making it! your energy is incredible btw it feels like standing in the sunlight 😭
Awwww ❤️❤️❤️
Whoa me and my sister did the same puffy hair style and her hair texture was so different from mines, so this helped alot
Love this video clearing up all the confusion out there!!
Thank you for this video
Because I know my hair doesn't behave like 4c hair.
I love the LOIS video. I think that was the one that made me sub…I think. Excellent examples. Love this video
YES!! That’s what I was saying
Love this 🤍 I still don’t know what my hair is thou 🤣 it just looks like a cotton ball
Your hair type is more than a letter and number. It contains behavior, and more
I’m relaxed this video was high informative.
I needed this sooooo much. Thank you!!
This was so informative, thank you.
im definitely 4b but cannot find any tutorials on it, its always 4c r someone who’s lighter w 3c hair
Yesss this video is truly amazing!!!!
This was informative and fun to watch.
Thank you. I’m glad! 🥰
@@apara2005 This is good insight, thank you.
My hair was more cottony until I started using clay washes and moisturizing shampoos. Flaxseed gel also gives me super tiny coils in a zig zag and s
I think a lot of people have several types of hair/curl patterns on one head and that’s another reason why there’s confusion. I literally have everything from 3b to 4c on my head, a yes whether it’s moisturized or not makes a huge difference in how it looks or whether there’s curl definition.
