- Here are 5 ways to test hair porosity and help you determine whether you have High porosity, Normal porosity or Low porosity hair. Each porosity test is easy to do and you can apply all 5 of the tests or simply select 2 or 3 to help you average out your results.
If you’re new to hair porosity and would like to find out more in depth information, then be sure to check out my video;

THIS VIDEO IS BASED ON TESTING YOUR POROSITY LEVELS ONLY!!!
HAIR POROSITY SUMMARY
Hair Porosity is all about your Hairs Ability or Inability to Absorb and Retain Moisture.
EXPLANATION ON POROSITY LEVELS
LOW POROSITY
With Low porosity hair, you'll find that rather than moisture absorbing into your hair, it feels like it's just sits on top, without penetrating into the hair shaft.
NORMAL POROSITY
With normal porosity hair, you'll find that your hair will absorb and retain moisture well and tends to last for long periods of time.
HIGH POROSITY
With high porosity hair, you'll find that your hair will easily absorb moisture, but it only lasts for a short while, before it feels dry again.

I’ve put together 5 Easy Ways to Test your hairs Porosity levels. The last time I tested mine, I had High Porosity relaxed hair. So having gone natural, I was curious to find out if anything had changed and used these 5 tests for the first time to find out. Of course, I was happy to discover that I now have Normal Porosity Hair 🙌🏾 (which I also suspected) Anyway, let me know if you guys have used any of these tests to check yours and if not, give a few of them a try. Hope you find it useful 😊
How fast if fast two seconds minute ?
the problem i find is what is a long time to dry. when saying long or short i have nothing to reference as a normal time.
This gave me a very good idea but do you know the specific correlation between how long it takes to dry with the relation to porosity? (i.e how many minutes?)
Also with running your finger towards your hair. I’m not sure if the smoothness or texture is rough or broken. Hard to tell, any tips?

I’m so glad I’m not the only one completely lost on these porosity tests.
Did it help at all?
Healthy Afro Hair yes it was very clear!
@@gabriellaagyarko4154 omg same
Omg girl you’re not
@@wul09 If it dries faster, if it sucks water fast, if your hair float = High porosity.. What's so hard to understand..? lol
LOVE IT!!! straight to the point! Some of these videos they are talking entirely to much before they ever get to the point... THANK YOU for getting to the point!
You’re very welcome! 😁
Tracy C please checkout my channel, I’m very new and have posted about two videos so far
I’m your 333rd like, also so true
You just said a word🙌🏾. 30 mins to tell you two useful sentences.
Exactly
No matter how much videos I watch on hair porosity I can never figure mine out and I’ve done the tests
Maybe you have normal porosity hair.
@edline *** me toooooo..I have characteristics of both low and high so I'm lost
Same for me...my hair floats but all the other characteristics are of a high porosity hair...so who knows
@@almeidareis I just gave up and said I'm high porosity lol smh..I bought a wholeeeeee bunch of different products and I will just see what works best. I have noticed that my hair lovessss camille rose line
Manes by Mell has a video that explains hair porosity a bit better. She actually says some of these tests don’t work or are inaccurate in determining hair porosity. She also explains how hair stylists don’t actually look at levels but rather “grade” hair porosity on a scale from 1-5. I’m not sure if her video will help you understand your hair any better but I actually found it very useful. Manes by Mell...the girl knows hair. Haha
The day I learned my hair porosity I will be genius
For the third test to actually work, you have to break the surface tension of the water by pushing it down. If it floats back up, it’s low. If it sinks, it’s high. The temp of the water may also affect the porosity, try it with room temp, hot and cold water.
My hair strands half sink and half float 🥴
I did with hot water it floated I pushed the hair strand down it didn't float back up I also did it with the cold water and it did the same thing
And you have to get rid of the oils as oils are water repellent
I did this just when I took my braids off and one sank the other was in the middle and the 3rd was on top🤷🏽♀️not sure if cos it was a little oiled
@@Blank1767 that means it’s norm
Omg this video helped SO much! Clear, concrete and straight to the point! Thank you so much 😊
You’re very welcome! Glad it was useful 🤗
You have the thoroughness and patience of a scientist ^_^
Haha...I like that, thanks! 😁
Not at all! I am a scientist and I cringe at how these “tests” are done and how the results are interpreted.
I am late to the game of taking care of my hair and I wanna say I am loving it so far. Watching all these different videos and different perspectives I am learning a lot. P.S. I think I have low porosity hair lol
Thank You!! I did all 5 tests and all came out as Low Porosity !! Now i can buy products depending on my hair !!!
Thanks for this. Love that it's quick, easy to understand and practical. Will definitely try these.
You’re welcome! Glad to hear it.
My hair get different results for each on :(
Then it’s possible you have a variety of porosity levels throughout your head.
Healthy Afro Hair yes thanks I just tried it and my hair grew an inch already! 😭❤️🙌🏽🙌🏽
@@canelaxgames9831 if you dont mind me asking, which one did you try ? im having the same issue
Watch a video by Manes by Mell. She explains hair porosity by grades 1-5. I found it to be easier to understand & more accurate.

Your accent is beautiful 😍 and I’m definitely going to try this so I can know how to properly use rice water to grow my hair
Thank you 😊 Yes, give it a try.
This video is good explanation and ways to determine your hair porosity levels outside of the float test.
Thank you!
I appreciate the half dozen different ways to test hair porosity since I always feel like doing only one type of test is super unreliable. I'll do all these next time I wash my hair ... thanks!
Love this...best hair porosity video I have seen.
Wow...thanks so much ☺️
Thank you for getting straight to the point.
No worries 😁
Wow thanks, very helpful!
Great...you’re welcome!
Thank you so much for this video and all of the valid points that explains the differences in hair porosity. I have a mixture of high and low. My roots are low and my ends are high. I'm guessing it's time for a trim 😁 and again, thank you! 💕

@@HealthyAfroHair 💕💎
After going through all hair channels on how to check for hair porosity yours is extremely helpful and informative. I did all the 5 tests and it seems I have a combination of normal to high fine porosity 2a, 2b and 2c hair. This video helped me to understand my hair which has a mind of its own. I actually did the tests twice; after using a clarifying shampoo and deep conditioning. I've been natural 2 going 3 years and so far it has been a challenge getting to learn and understand my hair. #HealthyAfro Thank you again.
Thanks, it’s great to know my video was beneficial to you and you’re very welcome 😊
How do you find out what kinda curls you have?
Thanks to your video I've learned I have low/normal porosity hair. Thank you. Now it'll be easier for me to find which products work best on my hair to give me amazing results for my 4C hair.
Ahhh...that’s great 🙌🏾 thanks for letting me know.

Sometimes I feel as though I have high porosity hair, sometimes I think I have low 😂 my hair does not dry fast, but in terms of adding moisture it doesn’t stay hydrated, even with oils. I think it’s best that I try out products to see how they serve my hair.
Sounds like you have low porosity
That’s me tooo
1:45 for this test you’ll need to submerge the hair underwater first because it’ll stay up due to surface tension if you just drop it in
Thank you. I was wondering, since my hair stayed on top for about an hour, but as soon as i dunked it a little, it just went down to the bottom immediately
Thank you! I did it right away because I'm smart 😆
@@lyleea does that mean I have high porosity hair?
Also: Thank you for this! I've always been curious. My hair is extremely high porosity lol. 🥺
You’re very welcome! 😊
Very helpful
Thank you so much! God bless :)
You’re very welcome ☺️
May I recommend you to try and do one of your test differently please..
The water test:
What you will find if you look at your hair with a flashlight is... When you first placed your hair into the water your hair is resting on air.. Which means the test is inconclusive.. Because I know my hair gets very dry like the rest of my body..
I tried it that way first.. Then I did it this way.. I pushed my hair underneath the surface of the water.. And my hair sank drop dead at the bottom and never up to the surface not once...
I know you understand me by know..
The choice is up to you to try this test again if you want..
Thanks to the tips, actually I don't know my hair porosity so I'm going to use this technique to know my porosity💕
You’re welcome! I hope it helps 😊💕
Water and moisterizer absorbs in my hair fairly quickly, but my strands feel smooth with no ridges
Welp that settles it, I have low porosity hair. Thank you for all of these, very helpful!
I am going to try this test
Excellent video

I finally know my hair porosity! 🎉
😄🙌🏾🙌🏾😄
Hi. I have multi mixed race hair & it gradually goes from wavy in front to poodle-like consistency in back. So my question is, do these tests apply to to all hair types or black hair exclusively & where does my hair fit in? TY Nancy
When I put one hair on water, it stays on top but when I push it, it go on the bottom. Also moisturizer don’t stay long I’m my hair (like 1 hour) but my hair don’t feel grumpy. And my hair Don’t Dry before my body.😭😭
Omg same 😭
Same about the water test, but out the shower the top dries a bit but the body of it is still soaking. Also my hair takes ages to dry, but I do use a good amount of product and it holds the moisture, so idk 🤦♀️
Me too😭😭😭 I'm lost🥲
I don't know anymore tbh. I followed a high porosity regimen for everything for a long time because my cuticles are bumpy (I think lol I really don't know anymore) and I struggled to keep moisture in my hair because it would soak up whatever touched. But now my hair shafts are still bumpy but hair products just sit there and water doesn't soak as easily anymore.
Thank you! Clarity.
You’re welcome 🙌🏾
Quarantined and forced to grow my afro got me learning so much about my hair..this is dope!!
That’s great 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Thanks for saving the “like & subscribe” til the end lol.
Great! I have low porosity hair.
🤗🤗🤗
Thank you for this, going to try all of these today.. For the longest I did not know my hair was curly, I had straight THICK frizz free hair as a child, but as I aged it became frizzy and hard to handle. No matter how much I moisturized it was still a frizzy mess. I did some research and noticed when wet it had a slight curl forming at the bottoms, so I started treating it as curly hair and it's doing much better the for a few hours after I wash and condition/dry.. However by the end of the night I have a Top/side section that starts to lose it's curl and starts frizzing out again.. My hair takes a good while to get completely drenched in the shower, and it takes hours to completely dry. I'm thinking I have low Porosity hair on the top of my head and normal underneath. The hair underneath gets a lot less frizzy and feels a lot smoother and moisturized than the hair on top, as well as keeps it's curl.. Some days top layer feels extremely dry/rough and like straw.. No matter how much I condition it just doesn't seem to help the top layer.. It's quite frustrating.
I have a question: will your results be different for the wet test if your hair is full of oil? (Oil repels water so isn’t possible that may cause a few different results, no?)
I have high porosity hair. It just dries even while I’m trying to style it and ends up looking sooo frizzy. :(
Hi @healthyafrohair when you talked about the hair and the body test. Do you mean the drops of water drying up before the body drys up? Thanks
Hello I just finished watching your video I’m guessing my son has low porosity hair , is it okay to put rice water in his hair? I know some kids hair doesn’t react well with the rice water & some does ,
So if I have a mix of low and high porosity hair what would be the best way to moisturize?
Beautiful style!! I would definitely love to see you do a product review of Straight Silk by JuniorLabs. It makes my hair silky smooth 👌
Still a little confused. My hair gets wet quickly and dries quickly but hair products sit on my strands for ages. My hair is smooth when I run my fingers up the strands. Also, my hair floats in the water test even if I push it down it floats back up. I have fine strands.
Yeah, sounds like your results are a mixture of them all. I know you said products sit on your hair, but does your hair feel moisturised after? and how long does the moisture last?
Healthy Afro Hair good question and thank you for replying. My hair feels moisturised afterwards , but by the next day it feels dry and I have to moisturise agsin in the morning and the evening. I keep doing this until the next wash day. If I do GHE. This helps a lot and I only have to moisturise once a day if I do this. My hair is hard work.
If the moisture lasts all day, that’s a good thing, so I wouldn’t worry too much. As mentioned in my video, the tests are just rough estimates.
Healthy Afro Hair thank you.
I have the same thing
Omg....hair twin :O
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
May hair takes forever to dry. Its actually a couple hours for it to completely dry all the way through underneath, even though it's very fine. So I guess that would be high porosity hair??
Hi I’ve got nappy afro hair 3b but all my life all I’ve wanted was permanent curly hair sticking out of all sides especially the front. I just want my hair to drop. My hair is always up unless I have a shower. Would you recommend any relaxers if that’s the answer or a specific hair treatment.... pls help. Btw I love your vids!!
Sorry I would like to clarify for the 4th step. How long would you give to judge whether it is high or low porosity hair because when I apply moisturiser on my hair it would sit for a while, then after 15-20 min or less it start to feel dry and begins to shrink really quickly if I have not stretched my hair out of course (as in straight out of the bathroom hair).
That sounds like low porosity hair, because the moisture isn’t penetrating into your strands and is still dry.
Thanks so much for clearing the confusion, so which is good or better?
You’re welcome! Normal porosity is the most desired level.
So, when I did the strand test, I felt slight bumps on the strand. But when I did the float test, I waited 15 minutes and the hair stayed on top.
Hello ladies and gentlemen. What hair products shall I use since my afro is soft and normal to high in prorosity?
In Test Number 5 with Moisture, what exactly means „ Short space time“ referring to high porosity hair like how many days is that ?
If you put your hair in water then you push it down does it still determine your hair porosity or your suppose to keep it floating
In this heat I’m not sure which dried first
Pretty sure my hair is normal porosity. Good to know.
👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
So do you want it to be high or low ? And what do you do to make it right
Strands test my hair feel really rough meaning high porosity but in the float test my hair sung when I pushes it down and floated up to the surface only very few stayed down meaning in general low porosity, so what test is more accurate the strand test or float test
I have normal hair porosity hair.👍🏻👍🏻
What does it mean if when I put the conditioner or moisturizer on that it just sits on my hair like I can still see it it doesn’t mix in or anything . Especially on my ends .
Excuse me I have a question.
So I did the test, some of my hair sink to the bottom , some of my hair stays on top. I did this test multiple times and keep getting some strains of hair that float and some that stay on top. It’s about an even 50/50. What is my Hair Prosody?
please help.. i did the test 3 times. the first time i got high, second time i got low and third time i got low. *BUT* i have the terms that apply to high porosity... sooo what porosity hair do i have??
Hannah Miller ,mine went down to the bottom of the glass after an hour I found it floating on top ,maybe try living it in water for a long time
For the 1st test. How do we mesure if the time is passed is long, short or normal? 🤔
Po-ro-si-ty ❤️
my hair take times to get dry from wet..what porosity is that?thanks for ur answer
Hi. I have done the floating test. when I put my hair into the water it floats. but if I push it down one time it stays under the water. My hair is really dry and frizzy, I also face a lot of tangles after washing my hair. I have fine and wavy hair. My hair gets wet fast ( if I use my hands it took 7-10 seconds to get wet in the shower). it also dries very fast. I mean after washing my hair it dries within 2 and a half hours. what type of porosity I have? please help me.
have you found your porosity type? Cos mine’s like this too. Just placing the hair on the water, it’s definitely gonna float because of the surface tension. For me, I push the hair into the water and it sinks but about 2mins later, it starts to float and when I look at the hair carefully, I can see some bubbles around each strand. So I’m guessing I’m either normal porosity or low..(simply based on the water bubbles I notice around my hair strains in the cup). But my hair is super frizzy and it dries fast...and just spraying my hair about 3 times will get water dripping from my hair...(so that means I’m probably high porosity) and with all the videos I’ve watched, I’m now confused as hell🤣🤣
You said if the moisture last all day then your normal.. so if it is moisturized and the next day it got back dry is that normal porosity?
I've been searching for that style of watch for a while. What brand is it?
Thanks for the vid.....I've just hit the one year mark, post relaxer and loving my natural hair :)
Great, well done 👍🏾 It’s the Apple Watch.
Thank u :)
