- Intel states that the i9-12900K is the new gaming king, and our numbers confirm this. This time around Intel's FINALLY delivered to enthusiasts, with a TICK and a TOCK in one go, which put's it in front of AMD's 16 Core AM4 Ryzen 9 5950X Champion. So let's check out the gaming numbers, and also some other things like power consumption, cinebench r23 and firestrike.
Check out the prices when they drop...

Sorry guys there was a mistake on one of the graph's titles, it was actually Call of Duty Cold War we tested on the Raid map, same settings. Will upload a side by side comparison soon for it.
Also when it comes to testing CPUs and games, 1080p lowest is how I have done things for years, don't intend on changing either.
@2:08 you say 716, but the graph shows 617
Excellent! I will probably never upgrade to 1440p and 1080p is the most realistic setting most people will use anyway.
@@celzolsen8988 buh, ultrawide...
@@STIHLable I don't know. Seems kinda gimmicky and not supported everywhere, and not least expensive. Will always be very niche
@@celzolsen8988 I ran an ASUS Designo MX299Q (2560x1080 60hz) for six years. I finally replaced it with an Acer Predator X34P (3440x1440 120hz) when I built a new pc. I've had no issues with compatibility. Except for black bars either side on some cutscenes, most games will render to the entire screen and often allow for a far wider field of view. A little more engaging and just stunning.
My favourite thing is having two relatively square windows (close to OG 4:3) snapped to each side of the screen. Productive :)
Lets be real here, CPUs are getting so good.
Even having half of this CPU will be perfect for 99.9% of people.
I think my 5900x is overkill for gaming.
Im excited cause im still happy with my old i5 4690 so how much of a increase will a jump be to 12/13th gen i5 etc.
Same I stuck ryzen master in game mode so I'm at 6 cores and its a beast lol
I'm still happily using my i7 4790k@4.6ghz and 32gb of memory . I'm gonna squeeze it ,'till she cries ! Or my bank account....
We'll not be needing GPU's hopefully in the future, the CPU's will be powerful enough to do all the 3D processing in software...... Well, I live in hope that's the case!
I was going to say. I'm still waiting now for a cpu to run like a 1080ti
Thankyou for actually testing low settings, legend
Hello Chris !
only competent techtuber so far, Hardcore Unboxed doing GPU benchmarks for CPU reviews.
Uh oh... Is Fr33thy going back to Intel now? xD
Thumbs up for benchmarking properly on low settings
Think this is the best actual comparison, once people start cranking up the settings the gap closes and the platform upgrade becomes a bit more unclear.
agreed. Many ppl who comment don't understand this and complain about the test done on 1080p and not higher.
@@marcc5768 facts!! It’s like before 1440P became the sweet spot (“why are you testing at 720P, no one uses that)
I think if the GPU is hitting 100% then you are not longer testing the CPU. So I try not to hit that limit on the GPU when testing CPU's max performance.
That defeats the purpose of finding the best gaming chip. You don't want 100% utilization on GPU when doing these tests. You want to stress the CPU.
@@OC.TINYYY umm did you read the thread? All are in agreement the way TYC tested is correct. Tho other commenters, as I have said, don't agree with the way TYC performed the tests.
Ill stick with my 65 watt TDP RYZEN R5 3600 for now as lecy has gone up here in the UK

So no issue with your LGA 1200 cooler on the Asus board?
Why nobody is saying intel bumped up the tdp to the 2X as amd’s 5900x. What if Amd also will bump up its tdp?
why are your CB23 scores multi so low for 5950x?? is it not with PBO and any other settings?
How did you test Warzone? The background clip behind the graph shows what seems to be BOCW MP.
Brian, why does Win10 use less CPU when i have task manager open?
I saw in another review that AVX 512 is disabled by default but it's on there. You just have to disable the e cores in bios to use it. I'm assuming the big little core configurations is causing trouble for intel.
Yep and upcoming raptor lake won’t have avx512
What is the Res, 720 or less?
Do you have any plans to make a custom strip down windows 11?
Now windows 10 vs 11 with these same benches; that would be interesting as well.
need to include power consumption as well, is it really neck and neck when one uses double the amount of power?
Or just use the latest most supported software and drop the old stuff ... No one should be on an old OS. Install 11. No one is calling for windows xp benches either. Just stop

I'm on a x99 5960x 4.5hz 1080ti at 4320x2560. Will I see any benefit upgrading to 12900k ddr4 5333?
What's the new stock intel cooler like? Always like the ryzen coolers look good and tend to do a good job cooling.
do you think the difference between ddr4 and 5 played a part in the difference between cpus
Are you running the 5950x with PBO enabled? Otherwise this isn't a fair comparison...
Pbo is technically overclocking according to AMD. It voids the warranty of your cpu. Intels new PL2 is considered stock performance, they seperate it into base tdp and boost tdp
How much of that performance delta is due to alder lake itself and how much is because of ddr5 though
And how much of it is due to windows 11 vs 10
And how much pcie4 vs 5
Thanks but how are you cooling this system@ those speeds ?????
Even with a not FULLY compatible cooler it was running some suprisingly good temps. 5.1/5.2 and a H115i was peaking at low 80s
Thanks for the review mate. Steve from hardware unboxed mentioned that for gaming there was hardly any difference between using their highest speed ddr5 and ddr4 memory and also mentioned that the temps were very high with the cpu needing a good 360mm cooler to keep the temps down, especially for productivity work. Also what was interesting is the requirement to use windows 11 with these cpu's but on testing many gaming benchmarks had better scores with windows 10.
Yeah AMD for temperatures.
Your reviews are the most fun to watch. Big YES
What's the power consumption of gaming rig in general?
8:02 he shows the graphs for comparison. I'm not sure its a huge deal, the Intel used 15% more total power consumption (which I mean is kind of extreme since normally you'll see an even bigger difference than that since the 3080ti is using so much of that power), but for different GPUs just expect the Intel to use around 25% more total power consumption for a ballpark.
Neither of those CPUs are particularly the most power efficient, more purchased for "the best". My personal gaming computer pulls just over 1700w (that's not a typo, I run quad GPU and my CPU alone I overclock to more power draw than those entire gaming computers). Other than the insane amount of heat during the summer its not too bad. I was planning to make an extreme cooler for it that would consume an additional 5kw but I hadn't got around to it. The computer I'm using right now though for this comment however is only around 350-400w gaming (Titan Xp collectors edition and Ryzen 1700) which does fine for most games if you keep your expectations reasonable. I think those are reasonable numbers for a moderately high end computer.
If you are really worried about power draw, the AMD chips appear to be more efficient, I'm not usually concerned with it (though I have a very, very high paying job and don't spend much money besides computers, so take that into consideration). If you're running it a lot then it might actually matter too but I consider mostly for gaming use. Also I've noticed even AMD desktop uses less power than my Intel laptop, so idle power consumption might also come into play (and I do leave my laptop on all the time, lol!)
You’re the only reviewer that bench marked cod. Thank you 🙏🏽
It was cold war sorry for the mix up, I said warzone lol.
Would love to see undervolting results in a future video.
Brian.... did you use the same performing parts like a x570 Asus ROG with the best Corsair ram and nvme. Also clock the CPU the same... because this doesn't make it fair
Used the best dominator platinum kit and the exact same GPU. The CPU is clocked as it is out of the box to show performance as consumers can expect. What you're looking for is an IPC comparison if you want a work per clock comparison, that's coming in the future as well as overclocking results once the new cooler arrives.
@@spusuf cool thanks yeah I want a ipc comparison for overclockers, but I get the consumer side of benches and amd should have a unlocked max turbo setting lol, spusuf are you with gamers Nexus?

My guess is Tech YES City!
I'm still rocking an ivy bridge i7, works totally fine for 1080p/60fps gaming. The performance of these new CPUs is impressive, but I'm honestly even more impressed that the 2011-14 era of CPUs is holding up so well.
Agreed. I've had many different types of setups and wind up selling my good stuff every now and then because the old stuff can still do what I want. I'm on a Xeon X5650 (x58 6 core) right now and it's doing just fine, and I find that way more impressive than watching all the latest super-expensive parts performing well.
While the performance of tech has scaled tremendously since 2011, so has people's expectations of how they want to game. My goal in 2011 was 1080p, period. lol. People nowadays want 4k 144hz or whatever, when 1080p60 is still good with me, and I don't have to pay much for hardware because of it.
yep, 5+ year old cpus are pretty awesome, only reason im even considering upgrading is to get that, 400, 500 fps zero input lag experience in competitive shooters.

The motherboard you will buy with a 12400F has not been released yet, either. Probably around $100-150 for that. Around $200 for the i5, probably. A DDR4 board and RAM will be fine for those.
Keep in mind that the Non-K i5s will only comes with 6 P-Cores and no E-Cores at all.
It's really interesting that in these benchmarks the 12900k is really pulling ahead compared to other reviews. Lowest settings possible really seems to amplify the 12900k v 5950x difference. I'd really want to know what the optimal memory configuration is though.

These tests are good, because it shows 12900k has about a 10% IPC lead over Zen 3, and then more clock speed on top of that. Even though typical settings result is about a 5% lead.
Intel can at least claim the lead for a few months until Zen 3+ closes the gap. Then it will depend if they have anything to compete with Zen 4 or not.

It's what's available... It will be compared ddr5 to ddr5 when ddr5 will be on both platforms you know... Meanwhile we were curious about this too. And it's weird that "amd nuclear cores" still consumes less and is more efficient than the intel with "efficient" cores.
Because this is a test as you get them out of the box, you know how most people would use it. Who in their right mind would buy a ddr5 platform and then downclock it to 3600?

If I buy a CPU like this, I want to keep it for few years. In few years, GPUs will be finally able to benefit from such CPU and 1440p high after two years might look like full hd medium or low today. I would not be surprised, if 4080 or 7900 are expected to be twice as fast as today's fastest GPUs.
Really happy for intel to came up with this lineup, after disaster with the last gen.

Testing top of the line vs top of the line. Testing the same cost CPUs. Testing the same-ish core count. But yeah gamers may need to need at lower end chips if they don't need a lot of cores
No, 5900x absolutely doesn't beat 5950x in gaming. 5900x is way worse. I have them both. 5900x is one of those cpus, it looks good on paper but when you actually use it for actual gaming, not benchmarking, you pretty soon find out it has way more stuttering. I suppose that is due the 6+6 core design. 5950x on the other hand feels almost like intel but its not completely stutter free either. I haven't tried disabling ccx2 cores or anything, that might be a fix, but i don't really care that much nor do i buy 16 core cpu just to disable half the cores. I'm more interested in 12900k right now, just finished installing windows on it. Just saying because internet is full of idiots watching benchmarks and praising amd.
Some amazing 1% & 0.1% lows! Even double the performance! Really impressive if those titles mean anything to you. A GPU upgrade might not get you that extra gaming performance
Shady's Back!!!
Actually complicates my upgrade plans I think. I've been holding off to see how 12th gen intel looked, but it's making me lean stronger towards the AM4 socket mobo (w/ a placeholder 5600) and waiting for the zen3 5950XT refresh instead. Gotta get that sweet VALUE baby! Else I'd have to go all in with DDR5 for medium-term 'future proofing', and that ends up being a pricy new build for the early adopter. Especially with things ramping up like they are. My 6700k/980ti system is definitely complaining about the delay heh.
Depends what are you doing with your machine, but unless you make big bucks with it do not attempt to "future proof" it in current market. Instead, go hunting for cheap i5 11400f (for example) , DDR4 memory and GPU that you could find. This CPU is good enough for most current and upcoming games even if you upgrade GPU in the future.

FTC and EUCC r very aware of that, as is ARM. mb
Your the only guy that actually knows how to properly test CPU's for gaming performance, everyone else is absolutely terrible, some clowns are showing only a few percent win for Alder Lake vs Ryzen my god...these other reviewers are terrible at their job.
B man is happy on Ryzen getting some competition cuz Intel has been sleeping!
pretty much why i always go intel, they are king when it comes to pushing maximum frames at low settings.
Except when they're not lol. This was a pointless video
Sooo weird that I just bought a 5950x on eBay like an hour ago what are the odds?
enjoy you're gonna love it
in reality, the difference on average in gaming overall is about 2 or 3% between your 5950x and Adlerlake. this video used the outliers where Intel was always favored.
Runs on ddr5, so it is somehow expected to take advantage of newer technology. How will AMD do it with the same memory what interests me.
Exactly, pretty pointless and misleading video quite literally apples to oranges
@@supernice_auto How is it apples to oranges? It is the best from Intel vs the best from AMD at this exact moment. DDR5 is a platform feature of Alder Lake so it will be used. We compared PCIe4 AMD systems vs PCIe3 Intel systems when that was the newest from AMD, was that misleading too? Alder Lake doesn't even lose much performance when running with DDR4 anyway.
finally some competition! finally we are getting real improvement to upgrade to. sad that i bought the r9 5950x ;-;
Same here 😅
would be nice to see the comparison on DDR4, you are using DDR5 for the Intel while the Ryzen only uses DDR4
even im using intel right now, which is 9th gen only...with those result, intel might be can celebrate for couple a month until Empire Strike back...before i choose to upgrade my rig, i love to see latest vs latest model...
I would like to see you try to hit 240w on the ryzen processor with the best overclock you can and see how they compare then? Intel revised a new big little platform then gave it an unlocked 241W PL1 so it can boost indefinitely to 240w while the ryzen settles far under that. Oh and my ryzen 5950x hit 28864 on r23 with factory settings. Appears to be lower now in most of these reviews? My single core was only 1602 so Intel would have the lead there. Then again my processor settles about 100 watts lower on full load than the 12900k limit is set.
The 5950x and 5800x van both use over 200w on the same tests with pbo
In France retail price has nothing to do with MSRPs at this time. And the complete platform cost is even worse.Better dont look at power consumption as well. Competition is still not there. Im sad. We have a new cost and heat king.
Cool 😮
do this with a 6900xt amd gpu.
