Its a BEAST - AMD Ryzen 9 5950X CPU Review w/ Gaming Benchmarks & Real World Performance

  • The AMD Ryzen 9 5950X is a beast in our benchmark and gaming performance results but its price is also quite high vs. the Ryzen 9 3950X and Ryzen 9 5900X. But there are situations where the Ryzen 9 5950X is worth it, especially vs. the Intel i9-10900K and i9-10980XE for productivity and rendering. But with the 5950X availability problems, is it better to get the 5900X, 5800X or even 5600X for some situations? But that shouldn't stop it from being at the top of which CPU is the best for gaming, rendering and video editing.

    It'll be interesting to see how things change when doing tests like these using Big Navi instead of an RTX card.

    • @vaibhavsawant6640
      @vaibhavsawant6640 3 года назад +2

      I don't think any changes would be seen in CPU dept. Only the GPU would get a boost and would run at higher clocks. No effect on CPU

    • @filmaxx3
      @filmaxx3 3 года назад +7

      Yeah, but remember all the benchmarks that the Big Navi beats is with the Ryzen 5000 that gets more performance of it, we need to wait tests with Ryzen 5000 with the RX6000 side by side with the RTX3000.

    • @robertstan298
      @robertstan298 3 года назад +6

      @@filmaxx3 That's just false. The tests are versus RTX 3080, 3090 and RTX 2080 Ti (3070 substitute, since AMD obviously couldn't get their hands on a 3070 before launch to bench). ALL of these are benched on Ryzen 5000 CPUs (5900X to be precise), both with S.A.M. and without... so WTF are you talking about? There is no real world "boost" a RX 6000 card would get that a RTX card wouldn't (outside of S.A.M. of course, but we have results for on and off, so irrelevant to the subject). It's not like they benched RTX cards with a Ryzen 3000 or a Intel chip, all where on a X570 MB, 32GB RAM and Ryzen 5900X.

    • @HardwareCanucks
      @HardwareCanucks  3 года назад +36

      There won't really be much of a difference actually. The RX 6900 XT is about tied or a bit lower than the RTX 3090 according to AMD. There's not really much additional synergy in most titles unless a game can take advantage of Smart Access Memory.

    One suggestion for you. A lot of tech RUclipsrs will give us charts on per application/game/program performance but it would be nice to get a summary by category at the end.
    For example, a summary broken down by "category" (gaming, productivity, rendering, photography, etc) would really help highlight RELATIVE differences between the hardware. You can control for there respective metrics (FPS, Rendering times, compile times, loading times, etc). This would be more useful to me personally.
    You could even take this a step further and section the results by "use case" (rendering, gaming, photography, etc).
    Keep up the amazing work!
    4:07 I would love to see these results after the GPUs come out to take advantage of the shared cache.

      That is a good use case for this CPU. I have been looking into it for data analysis during the day and gaming on evenings. I still conflicted between 5900X and 5950X for Excel as that program has some very weird multicore scaling and none is testing it at the moment even though it is the most used reporting tool in most companies.

      @@innocentiuslacrim2290 interesting! I’d definitely would like to see how it handles a program like Excel. And I was torn between the two as well, but I went a head and bit the bullet for the 5950x just to have the extra value when it will come to making an upgrade in the future and future proofing myself too, I don’t do insane VFX tasks but I’d like to have the tool available if I ever need to run it through my machine since I’m in the field working with other creatives if that makes sense.

    Upgraded from my Ryzen 2700x to the Ryzen 9 5950x for a mixture of Gaming and Workstation/Content Creation for editing videos and Game Development on engines like Unity and Unreal Engine 5, it was the only option for this situation for me since I'm stuck on AM4 unless I just build an entire new PC which I don't need or plan on in the coming years, not to mention it was on sale with the AM5 and new Intel CPUs hitting the market, hopefully this can keep up with the amount of editing and video rendering that I plan on doing as well as gaming with the new titles, only bottleneck that I might have is my GPU being a 2070 SUPER OC, but I'm also planning on upgrading that in the near future to help out and equalize with the CPU upgrade

With the 2700x it was no slouch but there were noticeable problems; frame rates in games, stuttering at times with mice attached via wired usb, just overall system seemed odd. I have the 5950x in the same x470 and not only have the framerates gone up with the exact same gpu, but the entire system is no longer stuttering or odd at all. This 5950x is really a remarkable cpu regardless if you need 16 cores or not! Also the 32GB ram that has XMP of 3600mhz would never run or even boot at 3600mhz on the 2700x. I think Valorant and Horizon are just the start of a big tide of games fully built around the idea of higher core counts being utilized for game performance. After all in a year or 2 titles purely built from the ground up for next gen consoles with 8 core being the standard will start to become commonplace. That's not the only reason I plan on getting one of these but I think that is overlooked on the gaming side.

    Haven't seen any reviewers do this yet, but exclusively for gaming has anyone yet tried disabling the "threaded" cores on a 5900X for example and using only the 12 Cores for gaming? How much further do they clock on the 5900X with decent cooling, and how does it compare in all games with the 5600X when that's a 6 core / 12 threads processor? I would love to know if there's a benefit to this in gaming as the jump from the 5800X to the 5900X isn't as costly and some of us would be willing to do it for the performance benefits, if there are any.

    What impressed me the most is how close 5900X is to 10980XE, even beating the latter at times. Something to consider, 5900X is a 12 core part, compared to 10980XE's 18 core. Just impressive how much better AMD is in multi-threaded tasks.
    That said, this benchmark is looking at mainstream use cases. That's why you see 10900K and 5900X often beating 16 and 18 core parts. I would like to see a purely workstation oriented benchmarking video, to see how good 5900X and 5950X are compared to 10980XE. Welcome! It really depends on the title. Some games scale really well with more cores (Valorant & COD are great examples of this) but in general most games benefit from higher speeds more than they do from more cores. Usually the CPU with the highest sustained speed wins which (along with its core layout) is one of the main reasons why the 5600X is such a good option for a gaming system.
