*UPDATE: Due to the ongoing silicon shortage, many 32gb kits (2x16gb) are now coming single rank (even kits that previously were dual rank). As a result, I am now recommending 4x8gb kits if you want to guarantee Dual Rank memory.*
What memory do you plan to get? How much, and what speed / latency?

Great summary and good job on this topic. A variation of your % cost spreadsheet is against the CPU and motherboard cost (not the total system cost), to ensure the RAM cost is proportional to the specs of the CPU and motherboard. No point pairing high end RAM with low end CPU/motherboard.

In this vid you did refer in the beginning to the difference between 4 single rank sticks vs. 2 dual rank but didn't circle back to that. Small point but thought I'd mention as many (like me) may have come from the GN vid on that topic.

Really informative video. However there is another use for highspeed ram/cpu performance and that is Virtual Reality, which has shown to be more often than not CPU bound since there is so much else going on in VR games besides running the game engine and even smaller frametime spikes due to the CPU are annoying/even causing nausea.

Since memory choice can be very application-specific, balance is usually best. For Ryzen Zen+, Zen2, and Zen 3, I would advise a budget conscious person to use either 3200 CL16 or 3600 CL18 and not worry at all about single rank or dual rank. General users will rarely need anything better than those, and they won't unduly stress your memory controller. I've used 3200 CL 14 and 3600 CL16, and I can't justify spending almost twice as much for imperceptible -- though measurable -- difference. I just bought the last pair of DDR4 sticks I'll ever buy, 32GB of 3200 CL16 for a Ryzen 5600X and a 2080Ti. I paid a mere $70 US. I'll try it at 3600/16, and it will probably work. If not, no big deal.

I keep seeing the cost effective videos that talk about this or that component only having a 5 percent boost or so. Well what I'm seeing is if I don't skimp that small amount on each component I will get a combined 20-30 percent performance boost.

I knew this video was going to be a good one right off the bat and you do a pretty good job on pointing out when and where bottlenecks are going to happen that is good information for people to know. Partially came here due to the cpu limiting the ram. I was doing some looking into that today, as I've built a few pcs already and that detail I skipped over in the past. Actually I skipped quite a bit on ram in the past and mostly focused on timing, however today I filled in what I needed to know. I do like how you spoke of when and where bottlenecks happen though this is important stuff for people to know, and I don't think I've seen much of it in the past from videos like this. Very good video overall, the benchmarks with graphics cards was good information, I was focusing on the cpu limiting ram when I came here.

I notice the difference on Transport fever just on memory CL from 18 @ 3600 to 16 @ 3600 on Ryzen made the game run smoother and alot less lag and stutter, in an intenive area is around 35 fps from 16 fps previously. also notice that when I clocked my memory at 19CL @ 4000 it was the same as 16CL @ 3200 but seeing the memory on Ryzen information when going over 1800 FC pass 3800 MHz goes to 2:1 from 1:1/1:2/1:3 (1200-1800FC)

"DDR 3600 CL14 4x8gb" kits are the fastest as it stands, but very expensive & hard to find atm (only 1-2 kits if in stock).
If you can boost the fclk to 1900-2000mhz, then you can push the "3600C14 sticks" to 3800-4000mhz, and slightly loosen the timings.

Great video, as I have a Ryzen7 CPU I opted for the Corsair Vengeance RGB "RT" version from Newegg, fully optimized for Ryzen meaning no messing around with BIOS apparently! The "Pro" and LPX versions of these didn't give the same information detail on this aspect, so not sure those are "fully optimized" or not for AMD but still learning this stuff, thanks for your great content Jason
