I built my gaming rig in 2010 with an I-7 950 which I've been using until 2021. Due to the lack of supply for Ryzen 5000 series I built a new rig with a Ryzen 3600 place holder for 200 dollars on a 570 mobo--but finally got the 5950. For me, virtual machines and gaming, it's a good deal. I plan to keep this rig a while as well. I'm genuinely surprised that Microcenter had these babies while Amazon, Newegg, Best Buy and B&H Photo were constantly out. Glad I waited because, for a while Microcenter was only carrying the 5600s and 5800s. I'm impressed by the 3950 though. If I had it, I would not upgrade--unless I wanted to build another computer with the legacy parts. I only switched because there are some newer games that require more advanced instruction sets that came out in 2013. Older rigs are still quite impressive . My 1080 ti with I7-950 was enough for the majority of my games.
Nice! Definitely worth upgrading from 3700X to this. And the price being around 800-900 euros at my local computer store is good too. Is definitely going to speed up my AI training and the order should be ready for pickup early next week.

I tend to focus more on editing, rendering, 3D stuff (blender and unreal engine) and perhaps streaming too. Which one should I pick? Is the +2 core worth losing the performance?
I wanted to get that 5950X, but sadly nothing available during the holidays, settled with the 3950X, a lot more than I truly need anyways because I'll be mostly gaming and possibly recording/live streaming, so I'm happy to get the $200 off sale i found for mine lol
oddly enough i looked this up to see if the 3950x had any advantage still. i have one myself not really in the market to upgrade either i was just curious why micro center still have both the 3950x and the 5950x listed in stock at the same price $699.99. i guess they are going to have a hard time selling any of the 3950x's lol i mean if the 3950x was $100 cheaper i would probably almost go for it considering for myself at least never even gets close to using its full potential. just weird.. idk when they will lower the price since its stayed the same all this time.
Availability of 3950x = Yes 5950x = No I've had a preorder for the 5950x since launch day and the shop has no idea or, if it will ever be filled. Bought 3950x for $710 USD in the meantime.
nah, amd user be like : " I can upgrade from generation to generation, so I *MUST* upgrade so the socket of AM4 is worth, otherwise what's point buying AMD?"
Geez my dude, why not upgrade to GeekBench 5.3.1? The scores are not comparable (they rarely are between different versions) but everyone is judging by 5.3.1 now and unaware folk are mislead. 5950X should net a 1700-1760 score in ST AFAIK.
Most people's monitors won't display more than 60 fps because of the refresh rate. I don't even think there are 4k monitors above 60 or 70 hz, not affordable ones anyway. So in regards to gaming, there's not really a difference unless you have a monitor with a really high refresh rate.
Usually upgrading to a chip of a same position one generation apart is a pretty bad idea, but this is probably one of the better times to do it. Zen 3's 1T performance is much stronger, and with its efficiency it can keep up that 1T performance with high IPC and much higher clocks for every core in all core loads, leading to massive performance gains both ways. And to add to that if you pull the power limits and push it manually Zen 3 responds to overclocking better still, it both overclocks further in percentage frequency *and* responses with more performance gain per percentage clock uplift. The gains in performance from better memory configurations is also diminished a bit, meaning those who need large memory capacity doesn't loss too much performance from higher capcity, lower performance memory configurations, though it is no slough at memory capabilities either. One of the rare occasions where I think it wouldn't be very stupid to upgrade one gen without changing core count at such costs. These occasions aren't nearly as rare at cost stuff like 8C lol

I'd like to see this comparison again, but switch out the GPU for a Radion 6800, and see if there is a performance difference with SAM, to see if the Zen3 is work upgrading to gain the SAM in the GPU. Thank you.
@@vtrekk that's the joke, inflation, scalping, high demand, trade tax,etc are causing the average cost of a 5950X at 1000$ or way more. You can not buy one at MSRP of 800$,let alone below 950$.
Real time perfomance specially in console emulation or audio/music production are the nightmares of a CPU (more than video rendering, choose a good graphics card for that), Zen 3 really helps a lot being basically a little faster than Intel's Comet Lake. 5950X should be a monster for music production with the very good singlethread perfomance beating Comet Lake chips and the 16 cores, this thing absolutely destroys the 3950X but it's by far the most niche processor from AMD right now.
I game at 4k with 4790k+2080ti... thinking then better to save the $ on cpu get 3950x and maybe wait to see if 3080 ti becomes a thing and get that when gpu are available (need the gpu memory for machine learning) - just keep my 2080 ti for now.
I have just one question. I have the 3950x and it seems that if I use all 4 memory slots for a total of 128gb RAM at 3600Mhz, after a while it gives a memory error at boot and resets and defaults at 2133mhz, so now I use 2 memory modules of 64gb at 3600mhz. Do you think this issue is solved from Zen2 to Zen3 or is it the architecture of the X570 chipset?
Did you use 4 sticks of ram of 2 it seems ryzen 5000 works much better in games with 4. I have a 3900x now but have a 5950x coming February 1st. Gonna use 4 x 8gb 3600mhz cl14 ram. The 5000 series is great getting one is a different story, I ordered mine over a month ago and i still have 3 weeks.
I couldn't find the 5900x, all sold out , so I bought a 3900x for my son's system. When the availability of the 5900x becomes more plentiful and prices stabilize, I might buy him the 5900x and I'll keep the 3900x......🎅
would the 5950x and 3080 with 64 gb ram at 3400 mh speed perform better than 10900k and 3090 with 32 gb ram at 3400 mh speed or would it be the opposite. Which opion will give more frames in a game like fortnite?
Well... IF it was actually worth it for you to have a 3950X, it would probably be worth upgrading to a 5950X, because if you were doing tasks which would leverage 16 Zen 2 cores, the extra IPC in the 5950X is going to give you even better performance. If you're doing something serious enough to have made the 3950X worthwhile, the 5950X is probably also worthwhile, especially because you're going to get a nice improvement in more single thread heavy tasks.
Honestly, all of these graphs look pretty fine. I think the takeaway here is that if you can find a 3000 series chip for 20% less than it’s 5000 series equivalent, then it might be worth consideration.
I managed to get one on back order but won't be getting it until probably March or even later then that but I personally think the 5900x is the perfect cpu for years that will last you for at least 4 years and still be good
*The Ryzen 9 5950X can run the Yuzu Nintendo Switch emulator smoother than 10900K, the 3950X can't* . That's how i know how fast a CPU is, not normal gaming (more GPU centered than CPU unlike emulation). Also, Zen 3 is a beast in PS3 emulation with a game like The Last of Us (sometimes almost 50 fps), Zen 2 meanwhile has more stutters compared to Comet Lake and can't sustain 30fps.
because AMD stock are so horrible that even zen 2 start getting so expensive. How about AMD fix their stock availability so scalper had no chance at all.

Hi Jarrod i've been watching your review videos for the past week and i can take a conclusion that Zephyrus G14 is a best choice for me because i need that light laptop with good processor and graphics card but you're saying that it has 20+ ms latency in the screen and i wonder if i want to gaming and plug the laptop to an external monitor will the issue gone or will the latency got more terrible? sorry im a pretty newbie. Thank you.
help
anyone with laptop knowledge
Thanks for the R15 benchmarks, the new ones are kind of confusing with their rating
What graph tool you using? :)
I just did The same tests, 3950X v 5950X. Though The article is in Danish. ;) close by The same results actually,
Ok thx for the Help, i dont need the 5950x i have the 3950x and a 3090, i play all my Games in 4k so ein dont need the upgrade.
No problem!
Jarrod: If you're buying today I don't think it's too much extra money to fork out for 5950x
Me: How? I don't have 2,500 dollars to get a 5950x
it costed me $900 for my 5950x
@@vtrekk but where? All are sold out but the price gougers on ebay and such.
@@vtrekk that's the joke, inflation, scalping, high demand, trade tax,etc are causing the average cost of a 5950X at 1000$ or way more. You can not buy one at MSRP of 800$,let alone below 950$.
Real time perfomance specially in console emulation or audio/music production are the
nightmares of a CPU (more than video rendering, choose a good graphics
card for that), Zen 3 really helps a lot being basically a little faster than Intel's Comet Lake.
5950X should be a monster for music production with the very good singlethread perfomance beating Comet Lake chips and the 16 cores, this thing absolutely destroys the 3950X but it's by far the most niche processor from AMD right now.
I got Ryzen 9 5950X for Christmas. :) Very happy.
Congratulations 👍
I game at 4k with 4790k+2080ti... thinking then better to save the $ on cpu get 3950x and maybe wait to see if 3080 ti becomes a thing and get that when gpu are available (need the gpu memory for machine learning) - just keep my 2080 ti for now.
Why the overclock vs using PBO2 / curve optimizer. The single thread is actually slower.
2 Days ago I upgraded from Ryzen 9 3900X to 5950X. Amazing
Can you do a comparison with the
5600X vs 8700k/9900k
wat about 3k/4k in windowed mode? and/or with 1000 chrome tabs open ? these two r big concerns for cpu enthusiasts ?
my 3950x gets very hot , what can you tell me about temperature, thanks in advance
So if you use 3950x for 4k gaming it will do
Please review msi alpha 15( r7 4800h, rx5600m)
I think the takeaway here is that if you can find a 3000 series chip for 20% less than it’s 5000 series equivalent, then it might be worth consideration.
i don't need 16 cores so i will hold out and get a 5900Xwhen they are available
I managed to get one on back order but won't be getting it until probably March or even later then that but I personally think the 5900x is the perfect cpu for years that will last you for at least 4 years and still be good
thank you ❤️
i mean there is supposed to be one last am4 socket cpu coming so i'll wait for that these improvements are minor
Were the gaming benchmarks at stock for both?
I'll stick with my 3950X - it's performing great!
I am honestly impressed by what AMD managed to do with Ryzen. Intel cpus seem like an increasingly less viable option with every new gen.
Gives them a reason to improve kinda what they should've done instead of milking their customers dry with small upgrades in their cpus every year
How about doing the same comparison but in a Clevo AM4 laptop?
*The Ryzen 9 5950X can run the Yuzu Nintendo Switch emulator smoother than 10900K, the 3950X can't* . That's how i know how fast a CPU is, not normal gaming (more GPU centered than CPU unlike emulation). Also, Zen 3 is a beast in PS3 emulation with a game like The Last of Us (sometimes almost 50 fps), Zen 2 meanwhile has more stutters compared to Comet Lake and can't sustain 30fps.
Going from a 3700X to a 5900X hopefully I see a nice improvement.
Improvement in what?
@@gordongoodman8342 big improvement in gaming and less time editing videos.
What bout ecomode?I know it's a beast in stock,do u think with cap 65w tdp.. it's still good enough to get from r5 2600?
it will dance around the 2600 even in 35w mode!
Strange to see this because the 5950x is cheaper rn
I play in 4k, and I am still on my 3950X, and probably for one more year at least.
in my country the 3950X cost 770euros on a discount
5950X costs 1100euros xD
scalpers in a nutshell
because AMD stock are so horrible that even zen 2 start getting so expensive. How about AMD fix their stock availability so scalper had no chance at all.
@@bsh7390 yeah i noticed that 2700X costed 180euros and now it went up to 260euros
eastern europe is worse cause shipping price adds up example amazon america a monitor 399$ shipping price 599$ i might as well get a 1000$ monitor from a local store xD
if im a 100$ off thats cause my math blows
Have you reviewed acer nitro 5 with i7 and rtx 2060 if you haven’t is there a way for you to do one
At what point do we have too many cores and too few memory channels?
Upgraded 3950X to 5950X for less than 300 euros. Was it worth it? Yes. It will be in use for many years. It feels a bit snappier, is 1-25% faster and more power efficient. This will add up. And no more thoughts for Intel:)
Imagine if AMD had the same amount of time on 7nm that intel had with 14nm.
Hey there Jarrod, could we expect mid range chipset comparisons in near future? i.e, i5 10 Gen vs Ryzen 5 4600h, i5 9300h vs 10300h, i5 vs i7 10th Gen ?
Now this is improvement, INTEL
Is a used 3950x for 400$ a good buy?
assuming it works and has minimal wear
but can 3950X run cyberpunk 2077 ?
