The best review I have seen, a lot of other reviews gloss over the heat and power consumption issues on the I9 which I think are going to be an issue down the road. From what I read you need a higher-end Z690 MB because of the power to run the I9 at max potential. I need to update my I7 4790K , probably will go with the 5900X or maybe the 12700k nad not overclock, my computer is used for day trading and music production.

Opinions are like ass holes everyone has one . Point is to me computing is fun and that's all it is . Its not my income . I only make $100 per build and don't do a lot anymore . I don't chase after rumors sites nor do I really follow any tech wizards. I find most are liars and pimp for mammon. Over the last year I listened to the wizard's talk about AL no one was even close. Moores law claims he had it right but that a pure lie . He got close in the last six months but before that he was way off. The info Intel published 10 years ago had all this stuff in it. 10 nm was Intel real problem and that's all behind them now. 5 years ago DIY was great fun . But the wizards are all shilling AIO water cooling . LOL . Its not even close / Most DIY water set ups are even a Joke ... Because these long runs are just stupid . The idea plumbing is the shortest runs possible . The idea behind water cooling isn't really about OC. Its about Fan noise . My grandsons machines are done to perfection. Short copper tubing runs , One system is set up for high flow 1.5 gpm and the other system is a high flow low pressure setup 1gpm - 2 pumps . Both are dead silent and out cool any and all AIO system no fan noize -zero . Both use D5 pumps . High pressure 1 pump High flow low pressure 2 pumps. X flow rads . Small case 1 xflow 1 dual pass. The big case 2 x flow. WE all have different goals in our builds mine is Best Stock performance and Silent running . 241 watts is nothing to run at full load at 75 C at worst. Do real work and the power numbers are conflated. Worse case does matter only to your kind of people.

@@Nemesis1ism Not really sure what your rant was all about and why it was in response to my comment which basically thanked the guy for a honest review so that I can make a better decision when I decide to upgrade my PC. 100 C overclocked is insane , my overclocked I7 won’t even get over 65 C under max load while testing. Yea apples and oranges comparing the two , and not that I am going to do Cpu intensive stuff that often but I don’t want to deal with that kind of heat . Anyway need to let the hype calm down a bit and see what AMD does with the pricing on the 9X chips . Right now it’s a toss up between the i712700k and the 5900x.

To be fair, in gaming its pretty much a wash but the whole platform isn't very compelling. I'll stick to my recently purchased 5800X for now, 330 bucks was a steal for it and it's a pretty banger while I can keep my platform and RAM and hand down the old cpu to someone else.

The enthusiast community is usually quite forgiving about power consumption as long as you can confidently say 'our chip is the fastest'.
However if AMD erase this lead with their 3D cache refresh (or reduce it enough to become academic) that extra 100w sustained is going to look VERY silly all of a sudden.
I'm glad that both companies are now being exciting at the same time though!

It came as a huge surprise the new Core i9 can approach Ryzen 9 5950X regardless of the power involved. Echoing other's comments here - FInally a decent and balanced review! I'm impressed with the new chips for sure, but there seems to be a lot of noise coming out around how fast these chips are vs the power draw, thermals, TCO, and Windows 11's issues (the AMD on W11 issues still aren't totally resolved). That makes for a "great CPU but lets see how it plays out" perspective which is important to bear in mind. Replatforming for a lot of people is not something undetook lightly & the benefits realy do seem to come from a combination of architecture -and- platform here

Intel has been on its back foot for a while, but now actually has a working new architecture, that's the take-away. It will take 1-2 gens for Intel to truly catch up though as they're 1 gen ahead of ryzen atm but only barely outperform it.

Overclocking using xtu one click OC is just going to raise the max turbo freq and use the corresponding voltage required for that freq from the stock VID table so of course power draw is going to be insane.
The doubled chipset bandwidth is quite useful.

    • @KitGuruTech
      @KitGuruTech  2 года назад

Leo here: Amen to that and I need to do some manual overclocking when I get to a motherboard review however there are two points there. The first is that the VID table is created and if it results in crazy high voltages/power the best move is to give it a wide berth. The second is that one-click XTU overclocking only supports Core i9-12900K/KF so we have a 100% fail rate.

Temperatures .. The thinner the better prior. Intel and AMD chips with thick wafers made temperature disposition more difficult. The thinner layers allow for better disposition of heat. I think people need to start focusing more on architecture and MTr/mm².

Given the pricing and availability of the DDR5 modules, this calls for a subsequent review with the 12th gen Intels running on the DDR4 RAM for more comparative platform to the 11th and 10th gen and Ryzen Zen3 processors. That way you could also check how the memory latency differs between the CPU families/archs instead of CPU+MEM archs ;)
Furthermore, I'd love to see if the 12th gen iGPU QSV got any better in terms of quality and speed of outputs for media encoding tasks - QSV has been a great tool in the Intel arsenal/stack when compared to Ryzen units for media processing.
Moreover, maybe you could even add the current cream of the crop mobile/laptop CPUs in the comparison charts given how in some tests those mobile CPUs are quite close to their desktop brethren whilst being less than half if not a quarter in terms of power and thermal envelope, and given how much full desktop builds or new laptops cost now. It'd be very beneficial and maybe kind of eye-opening, since several of your test tools/suites already are working on or have a build for M1s, to test those new CPUs in relation to also 11th and 10th gen Intel mobile H-units and Ryzen Zen3 mobile H/HX-units and of course Apple Silicon Pro and Max variants... after all we're still awaiting the 12th gen mobile Intels where Intel might be able to step up its game in terms of power and efficiency but Apple heralds its new silicon as the most efficient and performant for the electricity bills there is ;) Let's just see how far those stable 240+W CPU package draws get the new Intel from all those platforms targeted at the more efficient compute horsepower market.

looking at this I'm beginning to regret ordering 12900k and Aorus master, makes much more sense to pick a £200 DDR5 mobo, the 12600k and cheap out on the RAM, it still offers more performance than most people will ever need whilst offering the potential for incremental upgrades in the future that other platforms can't offer whilst recognising that the new features are in their infancy, the higher end components will likely not age well, high speed RAM with tighter timings will likely become rather cheap in 2-3 years, which current motherboards are unlikely to support well if at all, and it seems probable that Intel will start packing future generations of processors with ever greater numbers of E-cores without doing much to P-cores outside of trying to stay noticeably ahead of AMD in single threaded performance.

@Krisroffer Pettersson 100% if it doesn't ship tomorrow (I don't think anyone has those boards anyway) I will cancel but I'll still buy some kind of alder lake setup it still seems like it makes most sense in terms of being able to upgrade each part individually going forward given I don't have that much work that is CPU intensive, but it is nice to have the best parts even if only for a few months, the problem with waiting is that there is always something to wait for; when you need to upgrade, you need to upgrade.

My verdict, which I haven't heard said outright to this point, is simply that there is no outright winner. It seems to come down to a case of "AMD edges ahead when your application benefits from multicore, Intel if it depends on single core". Will Intel only have to throw more cores at it to win both styles of benchmark? Given a PC with these new premium CPUs in can easily cost upwards of £3,000 perhaps somebody will come up with a motherboard for ultimate power-users which uses both CPUs and which will only add a few hundred quid to the total cost? Now there's an idea! A four grand PC with AMD & Intel on board. :) I am thrilled though that this means Intel retakes the crown for gamers............. I just happen to be a technical user, not a gamer. So what's Intel doing for me?

I'm thinking that amd isn't able to keep up with the new intel regardless of whether it's given more power or not, correct? I'm looking for performance in my desktop processor so that I don't have to wait for renders, and so that other applications and/or games will run faster. It's predictable how many people who favor amd suddenly turn into energy misers who care so deeply when intel releases this newest iteration. My mind isn't fully made up either way yet, as I need to look over more tests... but I don't think I'm interested to save a few dollars in electricity so that I can worship 'the underdog' etc. Also I think some people are getting stuck on the fact that they've recently upgraded to a perfectly fine amd recently. So they figure why switch now, which would make sense. That said, I was leaning towards an amd cpu a couple months back. But with this newest intel, the decision is harder to make. I'm coming from an i7-4770k and want to go to what will give the most notable boost over my 8 year old cpu. I'm hoping to decide soon. I'm just trying to get a handle on much difference there will be. That said, thanks for the review which will go towards me eventually deciding
