    I like that you display the benchmarks for all resolutions at once per game. I do think it would be great though to see the minimum 1% low fps for all benchmarks though, as this matters a lot and actually can make a difference between CPU architectures, also at higher resolutions. Normally, at higher resolutions, it is the GPU that limits the FPS, but you can still have those small moments where the CPU is the bottleneck. And thus a stronger CPU can also matter at higher resolutions, but you won't see this in the average FPS benchmarks.
    Regardless, still a big thanks for the review. Thumbs up.

    It's a fine chip, but with the entry costs for DDR5 and X670 motherboards I'm feeling particularly happy that went with my Ryzen 5900x/RTX3080 combo last November instead of waiting for the next gen, as was my initial plan. With the shitshow that was the Nvidia launch, I feel like I'll be sticking with the current setup for at least the next 5 years.

      If AMD wanted to win over more people to jump onto the new platform they needed a bigger lead imo. Should've launched with 3D V-cache and give the new chips the same boost it gave the 5800X. Feels like an expensive sidegrade. I just ordered the new board with a 7900X and some RAM, hoping that the X3D variants are worth it early next year. I'll pass this current hardware on to family members but upgrading has felt better in the past than it did this time ngl.

      You have such a powerful PC with those specs, you really should be good for 5+ years. Look at my brother. He refuses to upgrade his PC. He's running an 8th gen i7 with an RX 480 Red Devil 8GB and his PC is surprisingly still powerful. He has had his 480 since launch and when I bust his balls about running a geriatric GPU, he reminds me of how much he got his moneys worth.

    Thanks for being one of the very few channels providing 4k benchmarks. I don't understand why the "big" tech channels leave out 4k benchmarks (often even 1440p). Why would I care how a 500$ cpu runs a bunch of games in 1080p? I want to know if makes any difference at 4k, which is probably a more realistic scenario for anyone buying a top-tier CPU (or in my case 3840x1600, which is close enough).
    As it clearly does not, I don't have to worry about having to upgrade my 5900x in the foreseeable future.

For new buyers of a computer and might have a slight advantage for mid-range gamers and content creators due to the platform being new and upgradeability being possible for 3 or more generations. • @johndoh5182
      @johndoh5182 Год назад +1

      " I doubt most gamers upgrade their CPU"
      No that would be very wrong.
      Intel buyers have typically not upgraded their CPUs because the MB have only supported 2 generations of CPUs.
      AMD buyers on the other hand are very different, or the ones who have bought AMD systems for many years. An AMD buyer IF they buy into one of these new MBs, the MB is the focus, not the CPU because it's the MB you're going to have for many years. Then, when AMD puts out the last gen of CPUs for the socket, they upgrade to a CPU from that last gen for the socket. If you bought a nice MB at the beginning instead of a budget one with slower interfaces, less ports, etc.... then usually that last CPU upgrade makes the system almost as good as anything new, and then a GPU upgrade adds years to that platform for gaming.
      So, one MB purchase, 2 CPU and 2 GPU purchases gives you a system that lasts 5 - 7 years and is always a good system over that entire time period. That's how it went for AM4, especially if you bought in when X570 came out and put a Zen+ CPU on it, and then upgraded to the 5800X3D for the best gaming performance. And that's how it's going to be for AM5, if you buy into this first gen.
      I doubt AM5 has more than 3 gens of CPUs though because DDR6 is going to become important very fast. These CPUs are getting SO good and there's the ability to add quite a few more cores, but with only 2 channel memory, DDR5 isn't going to be good enough for adding another 1.5X to 2X the cores.

    Awesome video, but I have a couple of questions/comments about the testing methodology. (please note these arent intended a criticisms, more just queries)
    First when summing up the differences between the 12900k and the 7900's power requirements ( 2:15 ), although these are the stated power requirements AMD and Intel measure these very diffrently, Intel measure peak power at boost clock, where as AMD measure peak power at base clock (as I understand it) and claims have been made a truer comparison would be AMD measuring at 230W to Intels 250W in a more apples to apples comparison.
    Next regarding the test bench set up, while imposible to have an exact comparison to test only the processor there is a large difference in the RAM used, The 12900k is using standard Corsair Vengance 6000 (in the UK at least this costs £260) where as the 7900 is using the far more expensive and more optimised Corsair Dominator Platinum 6000 which at £325 comes in at £65 more, while perhaps the change in performance would be minimal, the same RAM could be run on both systems reducing any variation because of the change.
    Lastly using an RTX 3090 is awesome altough only using a 850w power supply for such a power hungry card AND with such high power peaks on the processors could become restrictive and bottle neck boost clocks. MSI recommend using a 1000W power supply as a minimum for their RTX 3090s and the SUPRIM card is at the higher end of their performance and in turn the powerdraw of the card that was used in your testing. While 850W will run it could possibly restrict the consistency of the frame rates resulting in inacurate 1% lows.
    Anyways, I did very much enjoy the video, and as I say these arent meant as criticisms, just curious as to how the results you got were acheived, and either way what I claimed may benifit Ryzen or Intel in either direction.

    • @TechTesters
      @TechTesters  Год назад

      Never hesitate to ask an honest question :)
      - TDP isn't comparable between Intel and AMD but it still gives a rough idea what to expect, especially when comparing AMD to AMD. I show actual power use during the blender render later in the video. Either way peak consumption is up, while still better than 12th gen.
      - These AMD DDR5 kits just launched, so they'll be a bit more expensive. That'll settle soon enough. This video should still be valuable in a few weeks or months, so I'm not going to deep dive on each component price. Also dominators are more expensive just because of their looks. If Corsair had sent the Vengeance DDR5 kit for AMD which uses the same chips afaik, I'd have used that, and it wouldn't have made a difference.
      - Related: We try to do what a reasonable consumer would do. Setting XMP/EXPO is OK, fine-tuning secondary/tertiary timings is not something they'll do. That might be a seperate video, but not part of a typical review.
      - The 850W PSU listing was a copy/paste from the previous description, we actually upgraded most benches a while ago just to avoid issues with more extreme GPUs. I'll fix the description.
      - But, we did have some tests before using a 850W PSU with a 12900K + 3090 and then the same rig with the new 1300W PSU to see if it made a difference, but that showed no difference at all. A high quality 850W PSU really shouldn't affect the performance of these sets negatively.
      Hope that helps.

    We should not forget that apparently AMD is gonna release X3D products for 7000, too. This huuge cache version could be ground breaking in games, remember the 5800X3D cpu, it's still a beast for that (and I believe there are even new optimization for those). Given the longer maintained peak workflow (specially 3D render, compression, compiling, and video render) in apps and lower power consumption (very important in EU now), I'd say that particularly at this level, the 7900 is a win (for work!). Now, way more debatable surely with the 12700F or even 12600K and maybe the 7700/7600 (but I don't go as far as stating anything, I yet to see how these perform). And probably is going to be a tough fight for AMD with the 13th gen against the 7600/7700. So, if we consider these 7000 CPUs launched now more for "work" and the X3D versions, for games, then the thing in competition with intel gets extremely interesting. But Razor is going to be a hit, imo.
    Once 13th intel is released, Raptor, heck, what a fine time to buy a CPU. Whatever you get from these two brands is gonna literally fly. Sadly I have to stay with my 3900X for a while (self imposed discipline more than money issues :D ) .

    • @3polygons
      @3polygons Год назад

      @@ArbitraryFilmings yep, in a way. As I've seen too many benchmarks to deny it. The 5800X3D performance is quite lower in graphic apps than its older cousin, 5800X. In work/graphic apps, my bets would go for simply a 5900X (even now! Even more, a 5600X would do for _solely_ Photoshop!) or 5950X if you really have that multi threaded workload, as this CPU have also proved to have the best efficiency (frames rendered per watt) of all what's available now, according to tests, considering _all_ available in Raptor and AMD 7000s. That is, if already having an am4 system. Heck, I know of ppl having a business dedicated to architecture and rendering, and getting now a new station, they're mounting on AM4, custom double CPU stations with two 5950X working together, so, there's that (I'm not sure if that's a bit too fancy instead of just going the threadripper way, would have to need to be top of the gamma, though... nah... probably is that those custom nerdy solutions are cheaper, so).
      I would quite happily recommend a full 7000 series station for those needing an entire new system (not having already ddr4 RAM, etc), as indeed the tests indicate a lower power consumption and slightly less heat than Raptor. But you can undervolt and intel cpu, too, so, that's less of an issue than it is just as the intels come by default. Although, to be honest, in AMD, too, even if a bit less so; but ryzens perform great undervolted. I have not tried that with intel Alder or Raptor ... Then , the fact that some people (actually, a lot...) don't know how to do that, though! ... My problem is the very crazy AM5 mother board prices (at least in EU), together with the requirement of getting DDR5 for AMD 7000 series, while not only you could use old DDR4 you have, it's also that the DDR4 now is cheaper than ever. I think though that a system with a 6000HZ DDR5 (or a bit lower), CL40, will make the system faster in most scenarios. But imo the RAM speed is not that key in work apps as it is in games. Still important, though. Like, in Photoshop, if your images are huge, like RAW files of immense dimensions, one is better off with 64GB RAM of an ok speed, than super fast 32GB. Photoshop eats RAM for breakfast. _A lot_ of RAM, good CPU with very fast clock and great IPC, and using a *non* integrated GPU is what counts for PS. In the end, having a SSD in the boot/OS makes a lot more for performance than DDR5 instead of DDR4. Even if having an HDD for the working files. Or several SSDs, if one is working with video (I'd be prepared to having to replace those SSDs more often than with HDDs, though, in that case. But many video pros are fine with this, and indeed, always they tend to use mostly NVMe M.2 SSDs...even for just cache-only disks! ). That and the graphic card part (at least 6gb VRAM, and preferably nvidia, for graphic/work apps).
      The 7950X clearly is very powerful. But again, for multithreaded workloads. For Photoshop really one almost as fine with a 7600X or a 13600k as both have magnificent single core performance, IPC and top clock speed. Is in heavily threaded apps when the 7900X-7950X-13900K make really sense. I doubt most people (people doing actual work) are going to notice in any workflow the advantage in Photoshop between a 7950X and a 7600X or a 13600k.

      @looks-suspicious Год назад

      Indeed, 1080p displays are shifting more and more into the very low budget segment, and 1440p has taken over. Current CPUs are so fast that whatever you choose - Alder Lake, Zen 3, Zen 4 - you're almost always GPU limited and there is no difference in the user experience. Some reviewers, like Gamers Nexus, have started pointing this out some time ago.
      It's also important to note that even at 1080p, most of the small performance gaps shown are really just noise. 171 fps here, 174 fps there - use a different motherboard or slightly different memory for both platforms, and you might end up reversing the numbers. I feel like this isn't pointed out enough.

    • @TechTesters
      @TechTesters  Год назад

      I do want to add that those small gaps are repeatable in most games. Every number you see is run (at least) 3x, and these 1-2 FPS gaps are usually consistent in each run. So there does seem to be a driver, overhead, or some other factor.
      Not that it matters much ;)

    For work, for me is now crystal clear. In renders, the intel throttling down after some minutes while the 7000 series keeping the numbers for a longer period is an absolute win. Now, in games is more about bursts of highest clock, I can see how intel slightly wins in some games. As would any app work based in short bursts (so, mostly not 3D render and video render/export).
    But this is till a comparison with last gen intel (as 13th is not out yet)... I think... Raptor lake is a threat in certain uses, for these series. Surely not for work, IMO. Lower power consumption piles up over the other advantages for work (for ryzen 7000).

    Would like to see Warzone and BF included also(maybe other MP FPS also)

      Thank you! I did have Warzone included before, but the constant updates make it really hard to test consistently. No plans to buy BF2042 😉, but MW2 i might

    Thank you for using a nvidia graphic card and also showing 1440p and 4k results. Most other reviewers only test 1080p. I can understand that because there the CPU is the bottleneck, but on the other hand most users do have 1440p display or even 4k. So why should they care about 1080p?

      I don't think that's true. The steam hardware survey currently lists 1920x1080 as the most popular resolution at 66%, 2560x1440 at 11%, and 3840x2160 at 2.5%. The vast majority, including myself, run 1920x1080. I do plan on getting a 1440 monitor at some point though.

      @@odizzido hmm i know many who have more than 1080. But lets agree that the results should include 1080p, but also 1440p and 4K.

      @@mirafu3481 Of course, it's all useful info to have.
      My takeaway is that, assuming you're just gaming and want to go AM5, you should get either a 7600 or 7700 and ignore anything higher. By the time a GPU comes out that can stress your CPU there will be something like a 9800X3D available that you can drop in for a great upgrade at a great price just like the 5800X3D did for people with an early AM4 CPU.

    Too bad they're still not releasing the 12c/16c 3DVcache options, both in Zen3 and Zen4 guises... but maybe if Intel Raptors get to chew over the gains obtained by Zen4 platform and arrive in shops at the same time, AMD will be forced to release such possibly great workhorse chips in near future...

    I am a little shocked. Multitasking AMD all the way, but if this is how it stands with the 12900k, the 13900k will walk away with it gaming-wise.

      agreed. I'm still on a 3900X and 5900X/5950X is probably a decent upgrade path than going to DDR5 just yet

      Why get a 12900k for gaming? Even at 1080p acc to hwunboxeds many games average the 7600x is just barely slower than the 12900k. As for walking away, have you sampled Raptor Lake yet? The 13600 might be interesting for games and we'll see about efficiency

    In my opinion a fair review. Something i have notice though: AMD with the add on of a integrated graphic display engine into their CPU is now pose to attack the office market. Until now it was a monopoly of Intel (no need to buy a graphic adapter, the motherboard + CPU provide it thus lowering the cost of a office PC). Two problem remains for AMD to be fully competitive on that market.
    1: The price of the new motherboard. It need to come down by quite a lot or the launch of budget motherboard for AMD new CPU.
    2: The price of DDR5. It also need to come down.
    otherwise Intel will still dominate the office.

    Lots of games only uses 8 cores and not more So for those games intel got some advantage But newer made games that uses more than 8 cores and intel got disadvantage. Buying Ryzen 7000 is better because of its clear performance gain in the very near future versions of games.

      If you're on Zen/Zen+, this is an amazing upgrade. But I'd still wait a few weeks for 13th gen and B650(E) Boards.
