  • The Intel i9-12900K review is here and we decided to do something different when talking about Alder Lake performance. We did all our 12900K benchmarks on BOTH Windows 10 vs Windows 11 to see which platform is best. And BOY were there some problems when it comes to Alder Lake vs Zen 4. Particularly with the 12900K vs 5900X vs 5950X comparison in Windows 10.

    Nailed the ending!
On a side note, with all of this Windows 10 vs Windows 11, and DDR4 vs DDR5 stuff that is going on, I am really looking forward to the competition between AMD and Intel picking up again. I haven't been this excited about the computer world in a few years now (roughly the past 10 years). Thanks for the video over here on Hardware Canucks, Snows!

I wonder how the P/E cores are used in a single PC game streaming scenario (x264 to Twitch via OBS). Will the scheduler utilize the E cores for rendering and leave the P cores for gaming.. or vice versa? Or will they both use the P cores?

    • @DREAD69XI
      @DREAD69XI Год назад

I use process lasso to tell all of my performance cores to run for my games. I have my efficiency cores set to obs. On my 12900k it works great.
Also, there's a hidden setting that you have to enable through a registry edit for your processors performance and efficiency cores.
You would have to Google it but that option you can use instead of using process lasso.
Once you enable the setting in the advanced menu for your power plan you can set prefer performance cores, you can set prefer efficiency cores and you can set it to just use either or.
I was playing with the power plan instead of having to restart my computer and disable the efficiency cores.
If you enable the setting in the power menu and set it to prefer the performance cores you're good to go for 99% of scenarios because it will just use your strong cores and when it needs extra it'll start going into the efficiency.
I like using process lasso because I can do all of my stuff for obs with the efficiency cores separate from my performance cores that are running my game.

Still waiting on real pricing for DDR5 but early price leaks make ddr5 a non-starter in terms of performance to value by a significant amount. I work heavily with 3D CAM modeling softwares. These are very CPU intensive tasks. I run 3 programs at the same time running simulations and rendering. There is a big difference in real world application between windows 11 and windows 10. On windows 10 it runs slower and for some stupid reason when I run my CAM application, it utilizes the ECores 1st. So I got a program that makes my CAM software priority and then I see windows 10 utilizing the PCores 1st. Strange. Also, when its at full load, the PCores will be at full load but the Ecores aren't being utilized.. it just sits there. Its like Windows 10 has no idea what to do with the cores. Even then, it will freeze for like 5secs at a time every couple hours or so, like complete freeze. My 12 core AMD 3900x Ryzen never froze like that.
Anyways I got fed up and did a clean install of Windows 11. Instantly it was running faster. Felt snappier. And no need to set Priorities with a separate software, windows 11 automatically knows to set my CAM application to Pcores. Also at full load it finally utilizes both Pcores and Ecores. No more freezes.
if you plan on getting 12th gen and running CPU intensive tasks, get Win 11

Anyone who haves a 12900k I would suggest doing the washer mod to the motherboard socket basically take a 1mm washer (nylon) put the washer on the 4 socket screws it relieves some of the clamping pressure on the IHS that causes it to bow once the washer mod is done the IHS is flat and drops temps by 10° or more because the cooler can now contact more of the IHS

If you encode a video or compile some code in the background then switch to something like photo editing, the P cores go to the photo editing and encoding or compilation will go to the efficiency cores. You have to change settings to make sure it does not slow down background tasks. Sucky.

A bigger question for me is how binned are the 5950x that you guys have been reviews on. I've been wondering that for a while now and compared it with a friends PC.
Neither of us can get 26K Multi or 1600+ Single CB R23 even with manually using manual tuning for the curve optimiser, no PBO.
    My config:
MB ASUS Dark Hero (latest BIOS - 3801)
    32GB RAM GSkill @3200 CL 14
    NZXT X62 Kraken
    Phanteks Evolv X
Windows 10 (patched and updated) or Windows 11 (also patched and updated)
    I've been getting - 1569 Single, 25300-ish Multi
I've constantly seen higher scores for the 5950x on various review sites which makes me wonder how consistent they are in the current landscape with the production issues.
I'm just asking since I've tested 2 of these CPUs myself (returned one of them after I thought the scores were a bit too low). My friend with an ITX case has similar results.

    • @HardwareCanucks
      @HardwareCanucks  2 года назад

According to the Cinebench R23 database, the average stock score for the 5950X is ~26K. What do you mean by "binned"? Ours is a retail sample, not provided by AMD.

Basically if a person is going to go with Alder Lake I can see justifying also going W11, otherwise stay on W10 for now.
I am sure both Intel and Microsoft will be optimizing the W11 experience over the next few months making the OS better and more consistent performance wise.
Whether they will worry too much about optimizing W10 for Alder Lake I would not be so confident as they want the consumers to make the switch to W11.

The reason being it doesn't work on Alder Lake, or at least our system and probably a fair few more. As Intel told me, "We are aware of an issue with Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, and we are working with the game publisher on a fix." Though this does play into the slightly wobbly aspect of Alder Lake at launch.
    >Intel said it was yet to remedy an issue with Denuvo on Alder Lake for 32 games, which was causing issues playing these games on the platform, but the remainder of the library was good to go.'

May I suggest. To make this type of review useful to more gamers to include battle royale games with full or close to full lobbies? Warzone is top on the list, Battlefield 2042 or even V is a good one. Don’t use bots. Run it on live games. I’m not sure how you would design a benchmark like that but I believe that is something really useful. Battle Royale are different they will paint the real picture in performance. Not only that, these are games that millions of people play. Please consider. Thanks!

Good presentation. Alderlake may be Intel's best move in 10 years, but your work shows it's still beat by AMD in a few comparisons, so Intel has caught up and is back in front, but not by too much. It's clearly an expensive platform, still a work in process (in my opinion, if you include Window's scheduler as a part of that), and the POWER they are using concerns me. - AMD does a little less performance w/ so much less power. A couple months of software updates and Alderlake will shine more. But in several months AMD may have new CPU's coming out to steal some of that market, and who knows if they will play hardball w/ the prices to gain old Intel customers.

Not really...these new Intel cpus consume a retarded amount of power. Getting a premium 590 MB is a must...and that board, better cooler will probably set you back 900 bucks...but gaming dosen't run that hot on this platform....if your right on the edge with watts for your psu....that's another cost...RUclips influencers say to get a power supply 20 percent above your current needs...if anyone followed that advice, its another added expense.

@@HardwareCanucks I don't think there's some conspiracy, but it's hard not to notice some basic things.
Consider Zen/Zen+ with more than two dies. Windows, whether desktop or server, _still_ doesn't know how to properly schedule such chips. If you have a Threadripper 2000WX chip or any Naples EPYC chip, Windows - any version - simply does not work properly.
They pulled out all the stops, however, to make Alder Lake function better. It's not hard to see how someone could get suspicious about that.
Of course, some of that conspiratorial thinking falls apart when you consider that Windows 11 _still_ doesn't properly handle Alder Lake. Forget all the benchmarks you ran. You have to _disable_ all the "efficiency" cores (can't bring myself to unquote that until I see some reliable power figures for just those cores) to enable AVX-512 support. That was supposed to be a _solved problem_ by the time Alder Lake was released. Instead, we find that Intel and Microsoft combined were _unable_ to figure out how to deal with threads having different instruction set requirements. So now the performance cores and "efficiency" cores are brought down to the lowest common denominator.
I don't think AVX-512 is particularly important, mind you. On the desktop, I think it's almost entirely _unimportant,_ but the overall problem is the same - Windows cannot handle threads with different instruction set requirements. So unless/until that is fixed, you cannot have "big/little" cores without instruction set parity.
