Also the finishing before the texturing will mean that the gold is that much more clean and not discolored by the stain. The black/purple stain really made the wood pop. That was a really good idea.
Hey Mike, I could almost smell the Cherry Wood watching you turn it, mmm. The gold gilding wax is a great look, and the finish is gorgeous. An Alligator inlay Hollow form. Thanks again for the great work!
Reminds me of the Morel mushroom pattern! Just another organic piece of art. Oh, by the way, “messing around “ is always the creative process! From Kentucky, land of the Morel!
This one, even for an experiment, is I think, extraordinary. In some ways the end result of the stain + shine + gold inset + use of the cut/buffing heads is to me very reminiscent of that 70's 'faux antique' 'distressed finish' that was all the rage for giving a new life to "semi" old furniture. A very sound step outside the norm of relief finishes on turned items. I do very much like it.👌👍👍👍
It's wonderful to see artists try out new stuff though. Your hollowing is getting very adventurous and advanced so I have no doubt you'll nail the ideas you have in your minds eye in no time too
Nice textural element. I would try staining the indents darker and making the raised parts lighter. The highlights would more naturally come to foreground with the body of the vase. Fun to watch!
The vase looks terrific. Very well done, if you had not said, we would not have know this was an experiment. I personally like the wider walls/borders between the shapes. Dave.
Beautiful piece you made there Mike! It has almost an African feel to it with the reticulated pattern. I really like the gold highlights on the cutouts. Great job as always!
The dye really woke up the grain in that cherry. I’ve not done that method yet of grinding in a pattern but I really think you have done it justice. It gets my gears turning on some of my own projects. Excellent as usual brother.
i love the spacing between the carved out spots it gives it the feeling that it was always there and you just had to find it . grate vase !!!!! love it !
I finally got some cherry it’s still green I’ve turned some of it Having to let it dry you did something I been thinking about so gonna try it you did a great job I love it thanks
Love the contrast between the darkened grain and gold pattern. Before sanding it looked almost dragon like to me, and after like a river of pebbles. Really cool vase!
Cherry always turns out nice, and plenty of it about, I mist the guys the other day in the park cut a tree down I’d been looking at all of my life, hopefully I don’t miss them when they chop the laburnum down 😊, great video
It looks like a giraffe's markings! I love it. And I am forever amazed at how you keep coming up with new ideas. And turning a bit of rotten wood into a gorgeous vase. Bravo!
Weirdly, when you started using the roughing gouge, I could smell the cherry wood! I have turned a couple of vases out of cherry myself and obviously my brain could remember the aroma. 😊
I would never have considered the options you chose, in color or the shapes. But then, I would have lost out on the beautiful vase you created. It’s lovely. Good job. Keep up the experimentation!
For experimental piece I think it turn out pretty good. I first thought it looked like a turtle shell pattern but in the end it reminded me more of a giraffe shape pattern. I liked the color on this one. Looking forward to you experimenting again with this pattern
Very original idea, I think that I like the wider separation of cells that the additional sanding gave, it looks very organic. I would also like to see one with a blue stain, blue and gold are really good contrasting colours.
What a cool experiment and it turned out pretty cool! I like the gold "foil" for the texture but if you try this again, the gold would really pop if the wood was really dark (i.e.: walnut or stained/dyed really dark). Another really interesting video. Thank you so much, Mike!
Love the patterned embellishment. I'm looking forward to seeing more of it. I'm not usually a fan of coloring the wood. But this staining enhanced the beauty of the grain in the vase. Good job!
Another Gorgeous Vase! Purple was the PERFECT color to go with the gold!
Thanks Carl 😃
Very interesting and inspirational. Very attractive. Terry downunder
Glad you enjoyed it Terry 😀
Also the finishing before the texturing will mean that the gold is that much more clean and not discolored by the stain. The black/purple stain really made the wood pop. That was a really good idea.
Thanks Thomas 😀
It is absolutely beautiful Mike really like the way it looks Blessings
Thanks so much 😃
Always worth watching
Thanks Vivian 😊
When I saw the completed vase I thought "Sweetcorn!" It reminds me of a partially peeled corn cob 😁. Awesome job again 👍
You are right, never thought of that lol thanks 😃
❤😊
A beautiful vase. Inspiring!
Glad you like it 😃
Definitely funky! I love the way the colour picked out the grain and emphasised the gold.
Thanks Rachel, this is a good starting point and has given me loads of ideas 😀
even better@@MikeHolton
Another masterpiece from Mike
Thanks Norman 😁
Run the top under a hot tap and the shellac will give in. Beautiful piece you’ve created.
It was linseed oil but I'll give it a go 😄
Hey Mike,
I could almost smell the Cherry Wood watching you turn it, mmm. The gold gilding wax is a great look, and the finish is gorgeous.
An Alligator inlay Hollow form.
Thanks again for the great work!
Thanks Fiona, I have ordered more gilding wax in lots of colours to play with 😀
...nice! I have a cherry log in my garden, it died a year ago. Just need a lathe and some chisels! ;)
Haha better get on it 😀
Love the cherry vase
Thanks Martin 😁
Reminds me of the Morel mushroom pattern! Just another organic piece of art. Oh, by the way, “messing around “ is always the creative process! From Kentucky, land of the Morel!
Thanks Larry, 'messing around' is a great way to have fun without adding expectations or pressure, just having fun 😀
I love that you added the dark to bring out the grain. Very very nice
Thanks so much 😀

Thanks so much Christopher, I love the way it came out and has given me so many ideas for more 😃
This worked really well. The organic pattern is really conducive to this kind of hand held tool approach.
Thanks Ben, I think so to 😀
It's wonderful to see artists try out new stuff though. Your hollowing is getting very adventurous and advanced so I have no doubt you'll nail the ideas you have in your minds eye in no time too
Thanks Lois, I love trying new things to keep me learning and progressing 😃
Nice textural element. I would try staining the indents darker and making the raised parts lighter. The highlights would more naturally come to foreground with the body of the vase. Fun to watch!
Thanks for the tips Penny, I have so much to try with this technique 😀
I'm glad you were able to cut away the rot and produce a nice piece
Thanks, the rot did not cause as many problems as I thought 😀
The vase looks terrific. Very well done, if you had not said, we would not have know this was an experiment.
I personally like the wider walls/borders between the shapes.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, not what I was hoping for but I do still like it 😀
I quite like how that pattern turned out, even with the unexpected spacing. Very cool result.
Thanks Ronnie, always lots to learn the first time you try something 😀
Beautiful piece you made there Mike! It has almost an African feel to it with the reticulated pattern. I really like the gold highlights on the cutouts. Great job as always!
Thank you very much William, I have to paint over them again so in the future best to do them last 😄
Lovely vase and I liked your “texturing”. Infra red heater installed and works brilliantly.
Great to hear, I'll into getting one 😀
I would call that a "giraffe vase" lol! love it! Hope your cold gets better :)
Thanks Linda, it will do soon 😀
The end result looks really interesting. Very organic.
Thanks Stephen 😀
Love the vase Mike
Thanks Shirley 😀
I got scared for a second when you brought out the gold color, but the finished vase turned out great.
Haha, I have lots more colours coming 😄
YES!!!! I saw this video a while ago and really loved that pattern. Wanted to see it again. So glad I finally found it again.
Thanks Ben, this was a lot of fun 😀
I love it! Looks like it took a little patience to deal with all the ascents. Thanks for sharing Mike!
Thanks Brenda, I can do patience pretty well, I think it took about 25 minutes to do the first pass 😀
Watching again during your move cause I love cherry.
Thanks so much 😀
I like the vase. I like an entry for the giveaway too!
Thanks Bonnie 😊
Unique🤣👏👏👏🇬🇧
Thanks Maud 😀
Und ob das gefällt 👌Eine wunderschöne Vase mit tollen Farben. Klasse gemacht von Dir👏
Danke, mein Freund, das hat mir viele Ideen für die Zukunft gegeben
The dye really woke up the grain in that cherry. I’ve not done that method yet of grinding in a pattern but I really think you have done it justice. It gets my gears turning on some of my own projects. Excellent as usual brother.
Thanks! I love doing things like this, it sparks so many ideas for more work 😃
Love the pattern and I also like the thicker spacing gives more of a stained glass effect would also like to see a different colour combination 👍
Thanks my friend, I have ordered a lot more colours 😄
I love watching everything you make. It is all beautiful and perfectly done.
Thank you so much! 😀
It became a work of art 👍👍
Thanks my friend, you channel is doing great!!!
i love the spacing between the carved out spots it gives it the feeling that it was always there and you just had to find it . grate vase !!!!! love it !
Thanks so much Michal 😊
Love this idea! The whole time you were crafting I was thinking‘wouldn’t this look lovely with a honeycomb pattern in it’.
That would be nice, hard to be that accurate but it is doable 😀
@@MikeHolton Yes that was my next thought, that’s going to be hard to do 😂
@@louisjackson4634 Haha I'll let you have a go first 😀
Very nice. I like the pattern the way it is. Reminds me of an ant farm with all the tunnels.
Thank you very much that is an interesting observation! 😀
I finally got some cherry it’s still green I’ve turned some of it Having to let it dry you did something I been thinking about so gonna try it you did a great job I love it thanks
Thanks Jim, let me know how you get on 😀
Brilliant catch on only localized sanding next time. The cell walls are more of a triangle cross section. I'm going to remember that!
Thanks, lot's learned and loads of new ideas for the future 😊
Colouring and parenting are great, I hope you find what really works perfectly for you.
I'll keep going till I have exhausted all possibilities 😀
Mike, i like that you are not scared to try a new something new. i looks great thanks
Thanks Bryce, I love to try new things as it generally leads to more and more interesting projects 😊
This is a really nice almost honeycomb look. I could see doing this around the complete vase. Well done.
Thank you, it would take a while but could be interesting to see, all the best, Mike 😊
That's a cracking-looking vase love the finish always a joy watching your video's
Regards
Steve UK London
Thanks so much Steve 👍
For a test piece this turned out beautiful.... I was adding the black would ruin it but I love the way it brought out the grain..... Great job Mike. .
Thanks so much Dale 😊
Love the contrast between the darkened grain and gold pattern. Before sanding it looked almost dragon like to me, and after like a river of pebbles. Really cool vase!
Thanks so much, doing this has given me lots of ideas for suture projects 😄
Its cool , its given me an idea for an ash bowl with honeycomb lines and coloured resin painted into the lines 👍👍👍👍nice
Mike
Really like it!
I was worried about Hooch right at the beginning, but he must have been on a walk 😂
Haha he was sat at the side while I sorted the headstock on my lathe 😊
Cherry always turns out nice, and plenty of it about, I mist the guys the other day in the park cut a tree down I’d been looking at all of my life, hopefully I don’t miss them when they chop the laburnum down 😊, great video
Thanks John, yes, don't miss them taking down a laburnum, beautiful wood to turn 😀
Hi Mike, really enjoy your commentary and the way you think through the piece as you make it.
Thanks so much Tony 😄
Very unique! Here's a smooch for Hooch 😘
Aw thanks, I'll pass it on 😀
Good job. Nice extra ornamentation.
Thank you! 😄
Simply wonderful craftsmanship! Absolutely love it! You should try a similar one with a blue dye that goes so well with Gold
Great idea, I may just do that 😀
I appreciate you showing us trying new things live. And watching the changes as they happen.
Thanks Daniel 😀
That pattern is really beautiful. 😊 Great vase!
Thanks so much Andrea 😀
This is a beautiful vase.
Thanks so much 😊

The smell is beautiful but unfortunately due to my cold I did not smell a thing this time 😄
Love that Mike!!! Love the black/purple 💜
Thanks Donna 😊
That looks amazing, loving the contrast.
Thanks Mark 😄
Super style choices.
Thanks Mark 😊
I love your creativity Mike
Thanks Mick 😄
Beautiful vase

Great little cherry vase. Love the finish and design you put on it.
Thanks so much 😊
Love this vase! Take care & get well.
Thanks so much 😀
It's great you try new techniques and hone new skills. It is impressive and great to see your thought processies.
Thanks Robert, this has given me so many ideas for future projects 😊

Thanks Teresa, I was thinking giraffe as well 😀
For an Experiment, I think it was an excellent result.
Cheers Pete 😃
Brave design - love / hate.... I love it!
Haha thanks 😀
Looks good Mike. The colour you applied gave a nice highlight to the grain. Cheers Deno
Thanks Deno 😀
Turned out nice Mike, and I agree with you about the pattern separation, it did look better before the sanding. In all, not too bad for a test piece.
Thanks my friend, this is why I love about doing pieces like this, you learn and them get lots of ideas for future projects 😄
@@MikeHolton I did think the design was really cool though and it fit well with the shape of the vase.
@@82ndairbornevet Thanks 😃
Love this piece.. definitely unique!
Thanks so much 😀
Great looking piece Mike.👏
Cheers Robert 😊
Just lovely.
Thanks 👍
Very nice Mike
Thanks John 😀
I like it just like that!!
Thanks 😀
What a wonderful experiment!
Thanks Dorothy 😀
Love the shape and shine of it.
It would be interesting to see the “cells” done up in gold/metal leaf :)
Thanks Ane, I did consider gold leaf and will be using it in the future 😄
At first I thought, what the heck, but the finished vase is truly beautiful, Thanks for all the videos.
You are quite welcome 😀
Another stunner!
Thanks James 😄
Turned out beautifully. Great technique with so many possibilities Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Joyce, it has given me loads of ideas as well 😀
Love it great design lovely grain pattern too
Thanks so much my brother 😊
Mike you are unbelievable. I have learned many things from watching you. Thanks
You are more than welcome and thanks 😀
It’s always fun to watch your creativity at work!
Thanks so much 😊
Very original idea, I think that I like the wider separation of cells that the additional sanding gave, it looks very organic. I would also like to see one with a blue stain, blue and gold are really good contrasting colours.
I have just spent a small fortune on colours so more to come soon 😀
I like everything about it other than the black.
That is fair enough 😃
This is stunning Mike. Really love it.
Thank you so much Alan 😀
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! 😀
Wow! Another great beautiful outcome. I love the added texture.
Thanks Harold 😃
Looks absolutely beautiful!!!!!
Great idea
Thank you Robin 😊
What a cool experiment and it turned out pretty cool! I like the gold "foil" for the texture but if you try this again, the gold would really pop if the wood was really dark (i.e.: walnut or stained/dyed really dark). Another really interesting video. Thank you so much, Mike!
I completely agree Tom, I was trying to dye it dark but could see it would not take it. 😀
Well done Mike. Very interesting. I like it
Thanks Peter 😁
Beautiful contrast
Thank you so much 😀
Very special idea. This could snowball into a whole new area. INTERESTING
I was thinking the same things Max, it has given me so many ideas for future projects 😀
So simple to look at, makes you look again. Really nice, subtle. Love it!🏆
Thank you! 😊
Love the patterned embellishment. I'm looking forward to seeing more of it. I'm not usually a fan of coloring the wood. But this staining enhanced the beauty of the grain in the vase. Good job!
Thanks so much Kristie 😊
