I don’t add a lot of metal to my work, just a touch of leaf here and there. Bog Oak is amazing stuff to work with and I can’t believe how well he did with the lump I sent him and that metal looks amazing! 😁👍

It’s absolutely incredible to think of the fact that this piece of wood has been around longer than so much of recorded human history. The fact that it lasted so long, to wind its way up into your workshop, and to be turned into such a gorgeous piece of art that will likely last longer still evokes a strange sense of nostalgia in me. Good luck to everyone entering the 20k giveaway, and here’s to 30k in the future!
OMG Mike. The amount of time you spent on the bog oak was incredible. The finished piece is beautiful but clearly tested your skill and patience. Again, I learn so much from you on how you address issues as they arise. Thanks for sharing.
As a much more novice turner, I appreciate you showing when things aren't working quite as intended and how you go about dealing with them. First, it shows that everyone has to overcome challenges sometimes. Second, it gives me ideas to deal with my challenges.
Thanks! The one thing that helped me most when I started was to make myself finish every piece I made, if something was not going well, rather than just throw it away I would keep on working until it was done. You build up a knowledge of how to deal with situations and make things work.
@MikeHolton Of course sir. You are very talented and I've also seen you appreciate beautiful wood as it is. Just in this particular one, in my opinion, I would have kept it natural, but that's just me. You should watch your vid objectively, like you were watching another channel.
As a former amateur archaeologist with an infatuation for prehistory, the bowl is singing to me on so many levels. It's not just beautiful wood, it's a piece of prehistory, and a stunning work of art 😍
I've been so interested in woodworking since I was a child. I've been collecting for my own shop, and at 48.. I'm finally excited that I have the opportunity to begin. Better late than never. I really appreciate how you stop intermittently and discuss issues and your fixes throughout the video. It feels like more of a tutorial than a showcase. Thank you.
What a beautiful blend of wood and metal. The simplicity of the design belies the hidden complexities, the imagination and the skill needed to make it.
A beautiful piece on its own but the history of the wood adds immensely. Glad to hear that you’re getting so much out of this out of this wonderful journey.
Slowly working my way through your older videos to help with views since learning of your upcoming move. I'm not a woodworker, just an appreciator, but like many of your other viewers, I find a place of peace and calm in your workshop that helps me decompress at the end of the day. Your quiet determination and unflappable composure in the face of obstacles and setbacks (with wood turning projects and in life) is simply inspiring. You were made for this. Thank you so much for taking us all along on your journey. Godspeed.
The color of this wood is amazing, never seen anything like it. Nearly looked like you were turning stone insteand of wood. Great result as usual, Mike!
Quite an interesting and challenging piece! You've turned a piece of fallen history into a beautiful work of art, Mike. The Woods metal makes a great highlight and suits the dark tones of the wood. Whoever wins this will have great story to go with it!
You find such interesting wood for your projects. I’ll be honest. I didn’t know there was wood recovered from bogs. Makes for a very interesting piece. The darkened wood contrasted nicely with the metal inlay.
Everything about this bowl is truly special. I live beside one of Aberdeenshire's recumbent stone circles, and it's crazy to think this wood predates that. Congratulations on 20,000, so well deserved!
Well, Mike, that was one rollercoaster of a video! But the finished bowl is just... exquisite. Such beautiful colors in the wood, and that shine: wow. Also, thanks for teaching me that Woods Metal is a thing! Cheers!
I have only been watching your channel for the last 6 months and each woodturning project is a real work of art. I have learned so much in those months that it makes me want to go out and buy a lathe.
Bogwood , such a blast from the past for me , I remember a helping a friend who was homesteading in Ireland 40 years ago harvesting peat and finding all kind of ( mostly small ) pieces of bog wood , all deeply blackened ..
I love the inlay of the woods metal. I am just getting into wood turning so seeing new and different things is really exciting for me. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world it helps guys like me get inspired
Amazing to think that that tree was alive around 3200 BC. Congratulations on your 20,000 subscribers, someone will be very lucky to have that giveaway, another work of art.
So nice to see such an ancient piece of wood become so beautiful. I can well understand the problems you’ve encountered and overcome. Will definitely be giving Dick a follow.
Thanks so much Louis, it certainly tested my patience lol, loved how easy the woods metal was to use 😊. Dick makes incredible art, you will not regret following him.
Mike, I can't explain why I am so enjoying watching you work, but I really do. This is a lovely bowl, and I loved watching you problem-solve and turn out beautiful work. Thanks!
This is a piece of wood so ancient that at 5300 years old, it may have stood tall in the sun before the construction of Stonehenge. You've given new life to an incredibly beautiful and properly simple piece of history.
Thank you for sharing with us. That’s one of those pieces you can just keep chasing your tail until it’s too late. Glad you new when enough was enough. Beautiful!!
Thanks Barry, if I had much hair it would have been pulled out, I cut out about an hour of footage of me turning back and trying again. But we got there eventually, well we got to a point I could deal with lol.
I’ve always wondered what bog oak would look like. That is a phenomenal piece Mike which anyone would be proud to be the custodian of hand to their kids.
What a beautiful piece. The big oak is lovely, but what you’ve done with it take it over the top. The Woods metal looks great against the dark wood. Well done.
What a beautiful work of art you’ve produced right there . What makes it so much more interesting is the age of the piece of oak you have turned it from. Thanks for showing the project. Rob.
I like the way you also explain what all you are doing with what tools and what polishes whilst turning. Better than having no commentary like on other channels. Cheers!
So you posted this video on my birthday - and you're giving the bowl away on my wife's! We both love watching your videos as you're the only woodturner who gives some background on what you're doing. Keep up the excellent work
Greetings from Birmingham (Alabama). Just last night my wife and I came across your channel and were delighted with your demo on that challenging chunk of bog oak. The use of Wood alloy was entirely new to me. That was beautiful work and I would be proud to add your bowl to my collection.
Such a lovely bowl. I liked how you melted the the sliver (don't remember the correct terminology for the inlay), the sliver brought out the wood grain of the bowl. Wonderfully fantastic wood turning.
Beautiful! I’m so glad it turned out. It’s totally crazy the mineral deposits in the wood. Congratulations Mike! I Can’t wait to see what you creat next.
I wanted to mention it is so nice to see when things go wrong, even with a professional. Thank you for showing us problems and how to continue with a finished product to be proud of.
Mike, when I saw the cracks I was certain you could never get it turned without it shattering into toothpicks. Once again I underestimated you abilities. And that bog oak takes a marvelous finish. I'm so glad I discovered your channel - You never cease to amaze.
Mke: I certainly enjoy your calm demeanor, narration, and your thoughtfulness towards each step. You did a great justice to this ancient wood. It’s a beautiful bowl. Thank you for another inspirational video!
Idk if anyone commented this already but I was wondering if you couldn’t chisel out similar profile into those cracks as you’ve done on the rim. Maybe by hand or with a drill, something for metal to hold onto 🤔

WOW...WOW....WOW!!!! Bog Oak can be an absolutely beautiful piece and you managed to make this piece stunning. The dark oak with the Woods metal....WOW!!!
Mike, the Bog Oak bowl..... absolutely stunning!... it was a joy watching you overcome the problems you encountered with this project...... amazing!..... and yeah..... I'm still looking at giving wood turning a go!
Wow that was a challenge. I expected the wood to be difficult to turn, but it seemed to turn relatively normal based on the chips. I was expecting to see dust. The cracks and soft spots were very difficult. I was talking to the monitor saying time to use Milliput. As you said, the metal needs some mechanical means to hold it in place. Some of the cracks were just the wrong shape. I had not heard of Woods metal before. Very interesting. So much easier to use than pewter, just need to protect against the dust. The bowl looks terrific, so many nuances in grain and colour. Very well done as usual. Congratulations on the 20K subscribers. Dave.
Thanks so much Dave, you are one of my first subscribers and I have always looked forward and valued your comment and friendship. The woods metal is great to use and just so easy! I got the idea from an old turning book I bought off eBay and saw it being used to fill the holes in a banksia nut. The wood was hard but nothing unusual thank goodness lol All the best Mike
True honest presentation displaying the simple beauty of a chunk of oak that grew more than 5000 years ago. Absolutely gorgeous. I’m so pleased you didn’t goo too deep! Perfect design for such a monumental piece of history. Thank you.
Wow, Mike, that one really fought back didn't it! However it looks brilliant now, so well done for sticking with it! It would be an honour to win such a beautiful piece of work, particularly given its age!! I have only ever seen things this old either on telly or in a museum!
It's amazing that wood this age was still in a condition to be worked. I know oak is especially durable and bogs are renown for their preservation properties but I am still in awe of this wood's integrity and beauty. An astounding piece, flaws and all.
I'm a rookie turner and enjoy your commentary as you work on a piece, it's extremely helpful for me. i love the colors on this bowl, the black and amber colors go so nicely together. I've never seen metal added to a bowl before and will have to try it at some point 🙂. another excellent piece Mike!
What a beautiful piece of art you have created. And I especially enjoy your commentary; makes me feel like a guest to your shop pulling up a stool to watch and learn.
The colours in this bowl are memerising - I wouldn't have minded the holes or cracks, it's part of the wood's history and character but you're obviously a perfectionist and to my eyes it's perfect!
Absolutely amazing ❤ It is so rewarding to watch how you convese with your materials. The process is part of the product and indeed your artistry. Thanks for sharing.
Recently I saw you transform a gnarled mass of roots into a thing of beauty and found myself in awe at your skills. Since then I have watched several of your projects and this one was the first time I was worried about the wood because of the age and being from a bog. But you knew exactly how to go safely and produce a stunning bowl 😍 Thank you very much for sharing your work.. always a pleasure to watch 👍🇭🇲🦘

Thanks Susan, I hate to give up and was so glad to reach the end on this one lol
Thanks, Mike, for showing us all the challenges this bog oak created for you. It turned out beautifully! Thanks!
Thanks and thanks so much for watching, all the best, Mike 😀
It's gorgeous. The contrast is intense.
I know, the grain is just so rich!
Mike, the Bog Oak bowl..... absolutely stunning!... it was a joy watching you overcome the problems you encountered with this project...... amazing!..... and yeah..... I'm still looking at giving wood turning a go!
Haha thanks Steve, there were a few problem but I just hate to give up. What are you waiting for? 😀
The wood was hard but nothing unusual thank goodness lol
All the best
Mike
True honest presentation displaying the simple beauty of a chunk of oak that grew more than 5000 years ago. Absolutely gorgeous. I’m so pleased you didn’t goo too deep! Perfect design for such a monumental piece of history. Thank you.
Thanks so much Nicholas, I was a lot closer to the bottom that I'm normally comfortable with 😂
Wow, Mike, that one really fought back didn't it! However it looks brilliant now, so well done for sticking with it!
It would be an honour to win such a beautiful piece of work, particularly given its age!! I have only ever seen things this old either on telly or in a museum!
Thanks Phil and fighting back is one phrase that comes to mind although I may use slightly more colourful language 😀, all the best and good luck, Mike
What an absolutely beautiful bowl. Exceptional and unique.
Thank you very much! 😀
It's amazing that wood this age was still in a condition to be worked. I know oak is especially durable and bogs are renown for their preservation properties but I am still in awe of this wood's integrity and beauty. An astounding piece, flaws and all.
Thanks Julie, I know what you mean, if it had no fallen in a bog it would have gone thousands of years ago! 😀
A lot of work went into this beautiful bowl. Just shows there is a way to accomplish the desire you want if your willing to work.
Exactly effort=reward
It’s special thing to transform an so old wood, and you do very well. Thank for show us this.
You are very welcome and thanks for watching, Mike😀
I'm a rookie turner and enjoy your commentary as you work on a piece, it's extremely helpful for me. i love the colors on this bowl, the black and amber colors go so nicely together. I've never seen metal added to a bowl before and will have to try it at some point 🙂. another excellent piece Mike!
Thanks Troy, it's fun to do but if you use woods metal then please keep yourself safe. All the best, Mike
It's nice to learn about different woods. Throwing in woods metal, a whole new learning experience. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Jen, all the best, Mike 😀
So amazing. The honor of being able to work with that piece of wood 😊
I agree Mary, I'm a very lucky guy 😀
The inlay on the rim just looks fantastic!
Thanks Tony 😀
What a beautiful piece of art you have created. And I especially enjoy your commentary; makes me feel like a guest to your shop pulling up a stool to watch and learn.
Thanks so much William 😊 this is just how I want my guests to feel, so glad you think of it this way. All the best and thanks again. Mike
The colours in this bowl are memerising - I wouldn't have minded the holes or cracks, it's part of the wood's history and character but you're obviously a perfectionist and to my eyes it's perfect!
Thanks so Margaret, you are very kind 😀
Absolutely amazing ❤ It is so rewarding to watch how you convese with your materials. The process is part of the product and indeed your artistry. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much Jayne 😀
Recently I saw you transform a gnarled mass of roots into a thing of beauty and found myself in awe at your skills. Since then I have watched several of your projects and this one was the first time I was worried about the wood because of the age and being from a bog. But you knew exactly how to go safely and produce a stunning bowl 😍
Thank you very much for sharing your work.. always a pleasure to watch 👍🇭🇲🦘
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it 😃
Just amazing the wood is 5000 years old! Love it.
Thanks Ann, so glad I got some to play with, all the best, Mike 😀
Such a beautiful piece of old wood the colors are magnificent and the inlay really sets it off great job Mike
Many thanks Tim, glad this one worked out lol 😁
Absolutely gorgeous piece. 5,300 years old. So very cool.
Thank you very much Jake, it's hard to comprehend that sort of age!
