Carl, have you ever heard of a band called Pallbearer? they have a song called Dancing In Madness that has multiple passages to it that I really would love to see broken down.
14:22 I found that for myself (I’m currently playing along to this video on a steel string, dreadnought-body acoustic), this part was both easier to play, and sounded better to my ear by doing it at the 4th fret position on the “A” string (or relative equivalent from standard tuning… bah, you know what I mean! lol), to the open Am7 arpeggio. To me, it sounds better because you get those open strings in there. The other way just feels more awkward for me personally. I’m very familiar with the song, as I’ve been a Pantera fan since back when they were still together. I just wanted a refresher on what tuning they used, and how to do the clean outro part. The picking pattern is built on these two chord shapes; C#7sus2, followed by an Am7, both of which are arpeggiated. Then, after you play the first measure, repeat the C#7sus2 arpeggio again, but then strum the full Am7 chord at the end instead, just as the video/song does. So it’s all pretty much the same notes, and basically the same sound/techniques/feel. The same “rules” still apply, but it’s just in different, arguably more ergonomic, chord positions/voicings. Here’s exactly what I’m talking about (You can transpose it yourself though. (When you really think about it, the same sentiment applies with pretty much anyone, playing anything, for that matter. Still try to challenge yourself sometimes, but leaning into your strengths is always a good rule of thumb to go by, and don’t make things unnecessarily harder than they need to be. I remember after Jeff Beck died that one of his contemporaries mentioned when they played with him, they noticed he always seems to try to do even simple runs in the most complex, overly nuanced way possible, instead of what would likely first come to mind, if approached by a player with a more economical/efficient mindset. Both have their advantages and drawbacks, I suppose. It’s all about keeping things balanced, and just doing it in the way that feels “right” for whatever the song is.) If anything, Dime’s way would probably be considered the “default” way it’s intended to be played, by virtue of it being the original way in which we heard it first. Having said that though, as I’ve gotten older, experimented some more, and realized just how different playing something in different positions can sound, I don’t think there’s anything wrong at all with deviating/departing from what’s seen as the traditional, or “proper” way of playing something (within reason, obviously), and if Darrell was still here I think he’d prob say: “Hell yeah, brother!
