Alanda Craft how do I get two half square triangles from one square? I see you can do squares and hst but just doing hst wastes a lot of material as it doesn't use a squarej. Can you help?

Thanks for the video. I have a couple of questions. I have had my scan n cut for about 4 years and have never used it for fabric cutting. Do the ink pens last that long or will they dry up if not used. Also, can you cut fabric appliques with the applique paper on top of the fabric so you can just peel it off and stick it to your pattern and if so what cutting pressure setting should you use. I would appreciate answers from anyone who knows. Thanks
We haven't noticed any pens that have dried up. We have some that we bought a number of years ago when we bought the first machine and they are still working.

I just seen a video by Brother, they did NOT use a Fabric Support Sheet, this is how it was done...1 piece of Freezer paper( Shiny side up), a piece of Fabric, and another piece of Freezer paper( shiny side towards fabric), lay on regular mat, using 'paper blade, scan into machine, bring up design, do a test cut, than cut as normal...No Support Sheet needed...peel off FREEZER Paper, done...
Yes, we use that method too although we generally only use one piece of freezer paper. We find that we don't really need freezer paper on both sides of the fabric for this method to work.
Great Video, I have seen many but you explained exact and to the point. Although one question. I have heard using starch on your fabric before using the scan and cut. What do you think about this idea?
+Jan Thousand Thank you Jan. Yes you can starch your fabric if you wish. We have also used Terial Magic with success. We don't normally starch our fabric but it can help to make the fabric firmer and more easy to cut.
Am thinking of buying a scan and cut, and this was helpful. The biggest question I have is how long the fabric mat can be used before replacing. Using cotton quilt fabric how many times would you say you can use the mat? And the blade?
Do you prepare the fabric before cutting? I have heard that fabric should be prep with Terial Magic.
Aida Quilts We don't normally prepare the fabric first but Terial Magic is great for ensuring the fabric is firmer making it easier to cut. Starching the fabric can also help.
I have a scan and cut and do not use it but I plan on doing some applique and need lots of pieces so I want to use it for that. I have problem with my hands so cutting with scissors would be very difficult. Thanks for this video. I was wondering why you drew the seam allowance on the front of the fabric. Do you have to cut the fabric on the right side all the time. Also I think it would be a great tool to get accurate half square triangles.
I'm looking to cut heavy duty PVC fabric. Can this machine cut such material. I need several thousand small pieces cut. If any one can advise on a type of machine that can best fit my need. thanks
You might be struggling with that. It only has a small blade so it can cut paper, thin fabric and adhesive and heat transfer vinyl.
Can multiple layers of fabric be accurately cut at a time or is that not possible because of the sticky mat? I'm trying to decide what tool to invest in. I'm having a grip issue so trying to minimize the number of hours I spend rotary cutting or fussy cutting fabrics. I do only a little applique, but need to be able to cut squares, triangles, rectangles and strips of fabric for artquilt projects. Is my better investment this machine or the AccuQuilt Go and if so why?
+NWAdventureGal09 You can only cut one layer of fabric at a time with the Scan n Cut. Personally if I were looking at cutting a lot of basic shapes like squares, triangles etc then I would go with the AccuQuilt. It is more expensive in terms of the dies but in the long run you will be able to cut more fabric as you can cut multiple layers at one time.
I have an Accuquilt GO and yes up to 6 layers of quilting fabric works. With grip issues you might seriously look at the electric GO Big. I found the hand cranking on the GO was much easier than I feared, but the electric is effortless. This is the first time I watched how scan n cut works, there are advantages to each cutting device. Try both out & that should help you weigh pros & cons with what will help you best.

Thank you for your comment. We chose a quilting pattern from the machine in this tutorial. The quilting patterns have the seam allowance added, although you can remove it if you wish. You can see this at about 7:53 mins into the video..
I want one of these scanNcut but why you draw the lines first with á pen and why not just cut right away?
It's to create the seam line. You don't have to do it, but it's helpful to have the 1/4" seam line drawn on.

can any other embroidery software besides the PE-Design series be used to create applique designs as long as other software has that capability...more specificially "Click N Stitch Applique" by Amazing Designs, which I own. I checked out PE-DESIGN Plus and Lite and both have mixed reviews...and with the price, I'm not sure I want to take that chance.

I'm not sure we can help you as we don't enough about the different embroidery software packages to advise you on that. Barbara Mingo Hi Barbara, We draw in the 1/4" seam allowance line just to make it easier for when we come to pin and sew the block pieces together. The machine cuts out the pieces 1/4" from the drawn line. Cheers
Question please. Did the blade cut into the fabric carrier sheet. I have bought the carrier sheet but I daren't use it and it cost me quite a bit and don't want to ruin it. Unfortunately, Gracie, unless you get the setting absolutely perfect, then every time you use the mat with the carrier sheet, the blade will cut into it. There is no way around it. I know they are expensive, but the way I look at it is that I don't have to buy expensive dies for my projects as I can create them in the ScannCut. So this saves me money and that money goes towards the cost of mats, blades, etc. There are other ways to cut fabric without the cover sheet and we do cover these in our online training course,. How many times are the support fabrics good to use?

Which model would you recommend for card crafting and quilting? Love your information.
The ScanNCut machine has gone through 3 different versions - ScanNCut, ScanNCut 2 and ScanNCut DX. And to make it even more complicated, each of these versions has different model numbers. So for example here in Australia, the ScanNCut 2 has 3 different models - CM350, CM700 and CM900.
This can make it a complex process recommending a machine to someone. However, when it comes down to it, all the machines cut both fabric AND paper whether it's the very first model or the latest. So any of them will work for you.
What really separates the machines is the features. For example, the ScanNCut 2 and the ScanNCut DX have WiFi functionality whereas the original ScanNCut didn't.
So it comes down to what features you want to have on your machine.
Also, the ScanNCut DX has only just been released and this machine is different in a very significant way. It has an auto-blade feature which means you don't have to worry about changing the blade setting. This was often an issue with people using the older versions as they would set the blade too high and cut through their mat.
In a nutshell, essentially your choices are to buy either the ScanNCut 2 or the new ScanNCut DX. (You would probably NOT want to go with the original ScanNCut unless you see a used model somewhere for cheap as you may be losing out on some of the newer features.)
My preference would be to go with the ScanNCut DX since it is the latest model. However, we have only had the DX for a short time so we don't want to go recommending it until we have had a really good play, but so far it's looking good.

Thank you for your comment Brenda. Although the blade is the same for cutting both paper and fabric we recommend having one blade for paper and one for cutting fabric. Just like you wouldn't use your sewing scissors to cut out paper. Once a blade becomes too dull to cut fabric you can use it to cut paper. Type scanncut fabric pens into the
Amazon search to find the fabric pens.

+biolemmashem Thank you. It's definitely reusable. You can use it multiple times but eventually it will have too many cut lines. Then it becomes a problem to get all the little bits off the mat.

Does it cut leather fabric?
It can cut thin leather. You wouldn't want to go too thick.
Can this cut 12 inch circles with 3/4 inch hole in center ?
You should use separate blades for cutting fabrics from cutting card like any blade/scissors card will blunt blade more quickly

Will my Cm300 cut material for quilting?
Every ScanNCut machine ever made will cut both paper and fabric. So yes, your machine will cut quilting fabric and applique.
I am confused about what the fabric support sheet is. Does it just make the standard mat into a super sticky mat? Is it removable? How often do you need to replace it? I tried using the one that came with my machine and it got the cut lines from cutting fabric and I could never get all of the little bits of it removed from my mat. Thanks.
daiseydogg You're pretty much spot on with everything you said Daiseygogg. The fabric mat is to make a mat super sticky and it is removable. However, like you said, once you start using it, you get the problem of lots of cuts through it and it can become quite difficult to remove with all the little bits and pieces. You can try putting your next fabric mat on a Low Tack mat instead of the standard mat as it may be easier to remove. Other than that, we are still working on ways to easily remove those bits and pieces and will post a video when we come up with something.
Can you buy a pattern like from Walmart and put on there and have it cut it for you so everything looks exactly perfect or does it already have it on the programmed into it and I guess I was kind of wondering the inks and stopped and you are using all those expensive or does all that you have to buy separate
You can buy patterns and scan them through but they have to be smaller than the scannable area. The standard mat is 12" x 12" and there is a longer mat that measures 12" x 24". So as long as the pattern fits that, AND you have the latest model of the ScanNCut you will be able to scan through a pattern. But this machine has it's limitations and it will depend on the quality of the pattern as to how well the machine will read it. It needs to have fairly defined edges around the pattern for it to work.
If cutting fabric for a quilt, how long will a blade last? Is there an idea how many uses in one?
We get this asked a lot but it's kind of a difficult one to answer because we don't really keep track of how often we change the blades. Plus, we don't always change the blade between cutting paper and fabric which can affect the longevity of the blade. I guess we might change the blade every couple of months or so. It really depends though on how much we have cut and what we have been cutting. And sometimes we will be using the machine every day and sometimes it will be a few days or a week between use.
How often is the cutter replaced?
Hi, I'm just loving your videos and I'm starting to notice (grrrrrrr) negative comments from people that don't even have a Brother Scan n Cut. I specifically come into your videos for THIS machine... I actually thought I'd give the Negative Nelly's the benefit of the doubt and went ahead and watched a few of the videos for the Accuquilts and whilst its great for 'quilting' designs I can't see you being able to do much else, eg. paper, vinyl, leather etc. (i haven't found any videos)... It is of my opinion you are limited with AccuquiltGo as you need those Dies which would probably be limited to a few standard shapes and quite costly to try and build up a collection. Gosh, unless you buy the fancy newer models which are just as pricey you have to crank the thing with your hand.... NOPE.. i'm definately NOT convinced on these other machines or rotary cutter!
@Mary Ellen Brennan - It takes 2 seconds to smooth material out and still cuts several pieces at a time without using a silly handle! I think if you don't have a specific machine then you probably should keep negative comments to yourself.. its one thing to add useful information on other people's videos but the rest of us don't need or want to see these. (once again, my opinion).

Where do you get the sticky foundation paper to stick to the cutting mat?
That is a High Tack Adhesive Fabric Support Sheet and is sold by Brother. If you buy the top of the line ScanNCut model, it is included in the box, otherwise it can be purchased as an optional accessory.
Hello, Can you tell me if this will cut cotton/canvas material. If not, can you recommend the model that will at all?
It's honestly too hard to tell without actually having the fabric in front of us but it should cut. There is a deep cut blade for cutting thicker fabrics and it can cut felt for instance. But again, without us actually seeing the fabric you have, I can't give you an absolute yes or no. If you can find a dealer in your area, you could take the fabric into their shop and get them to test it for you.
Can fabric backed with crack n peel adhesive be cut with this machine?
We've never used it so couldn't really say. If it is thin enough, it should work but we can't guarantee it without giving it a try.

Does this work with a Mac
This is a tutorial for the Brother ScanNCut machine. The ScanNCut doesn't need a computer to work but it is compatible with a Mac.
What am I doing wrong? My fabric wants to stretch when I try to remove from the mat?

No Gwen, we just used the fabric sheet for this tutorial.
Can you make purses, doll clothes, kids clothes?
This machine cuts out shapes. So it depends on what you are wanting to make and whether you have a pattern that you can use with the machine to cut out the shape. The pattern has to be converted to an FCM file which is what the machine recognizes.
How does this compare to cricut maker?
We don't own the Cricut so sorry, can't provide on answer on this one.
What is the name of the supporting material
This is the high tack fabric support sheet.
How does design cut compare to scancut?
I've never heard of Design Cut. Do you have a link of what this is?

+Dorien Reed It's difficult to say really. However, the stickiness of the mat lasts quite a long time. What does tend to happen with this mat is that the blade cuts through it. It all comes down to what sort of patterns you are cutting, what setting your blade is set at and how often you use it. Sorry I can't be more specific but with all the variables it is hard to give a definitive answer. We don't tend to cut a lot of fabric ourselves. Maybe one of our subscribers, who does use their fabric mat a lot, will come in and help out.

+Dino Walker Although the Scan n Cut can scan photos, it isn't able to distinguish things in photos very well in order to cut around them. It really needs images with very distinct outlines. Why couldn't you just cut directly, why did you have to draw first?
The drawing line is the seam allowance it is not the cutting line. It is not recessary to draw the seam allowance if you don't want to, you can simply cut out the pattern.
Machine no longer available

No. I can't see doing all this work just to cut fabric squares. My rotary cutter is a much faster option and I don't have to smooth out any bubbles in the fabric.
Mary Ellen Brennan Agreed that it is much easier and quicker to rotary cut basic shapes like triangles and squares, but when it comes to tricky shapes that's where the Scan n Cut comes in to play. It's also good for those that want to ensure that each piece is cut exactly the same.
It would still be too much work. Having to smooth out bubbles and only being able to cut one at a time. I don't do applique very often, but when I do, I either cut by hand or use my AccuquiltGo, which is VERY user friendly!
can this be used with a Baby Lock machines ? thank you
The ScanNCut is a stand alone machine and doesn't connect with sewing machines. However, the ScanNCut recognizes PES files (which is a Babylock file format) so you can use the machine to cut out applique shapes.

The machine cuts all sorts of designs and you can use both fabric and paper. The machine itself comes with hundreds of designs already built in.
