- Malibu is a dusty getaway from the crowded city of LA in California and it's actually a bit of a gem wave for a shortboard.
Moving up the point to second and third point allows for a faster and more critical ride and, surprisingly, there always seems to be enough space in the line up to find plenty of waves.

i lived near there for about a year and that wave is what got me back into surfing. So much fun times there and second to third point was never nearly as crowded as first point!
Getting harassed by some weirdos is totally a thing all along the California coast. But they're all pretty cool and sometimes have funny stories

I have three weirdos who all hang out at the entrance one is fat and makes weird noises one plays the guitar while he’s stoned and talks to everyone and the other one watches everyone surf, remembers exactly what they do, then scares them when they leave
That’s hilarious! I live in Manhattan bch and that homeless guy came in and asked if I had anything to spare. So we gave him a couple bagels and a coffee. He walked out and came back in asking if we had hot sauce, poured a shit ton in his coffee, nodded, smiled and said “perfect!” strange cat for reals

Nice! Third Point is the best! I surf there all the time. If you go more north there is a great spot called Zeros (Nicholas Canyon Beach).

FYI Kale, Whereas Big Wednesday was Set in Malibu, it was not filmed there. It was filmed up by Hollister Ranch, and big wave scenes in Hawaii.
Giving awesome value there Kale!! Love your assessment of that wave/ area of LA and your backside attempts! You were spot on! Used to surf Malibu heaps as a Goofy. You are absolutely right in that 2nd Point and 3rd are EXTREMELY racy waves where setting up for the bottom turn is overlooked because it's too urgent to get down the line :( I got really good at pumping and floaters surfing ACROSS the wave but have an undeveloped bottom to top style surfing now. My question is how do you FIX that?? Can you do a video on how to surf RACY waves (it seems quite difficult going backside) ?? You mentioned Winkipop is very similar to Malibu...heheh next time you're out here I'll show you a parking tip to save yourself some walking in at the'Bu😅 btw good to see you bringing that fresh Aussie style to these quick little CA waves!!
Ah! Thanks Dolby!! For sure man - I would just try to surf some slower waves and try to focus on compression at the bottom
square shoulder with rails turning at waist to see wave face. use feet instead of eyes to know when to arc lippers. u can feel lip under your feet.
I think they filmed most of Big Wednesday at Hollister Ranch north of Santa Barbara.
Been to Malibu once. Didn’t expect to find so many rocks/stones lying around... found them a tad annoying. Feet, shins & board didn’t like them either.
Going by the footage, rocks/stones still look to be there 💎🏄🏻♂️

Go north to Ventura and get some really long rides.
Just surfed 2nd point on Saturday & Sunday, waves were perfect and the Sun was shining all day long!

LOL I grew up there. I know the traffic we’ll. Started riding a motorcycle which can be crazy around L.A. but now I surf Santa Cruz and Mavericks although currently at New Smyrna Florida. Drivers in Florida are another dangerous lot.

Love Malibu. I've been in San Diego 20 years and I've never surfed there. Been by there a few times but can never find parking. Surprised you didn't break out a longboard and surfed the point. I would love to see that.

Please tell me you didn't just stay in LA to surf... you have to get up above LA or down below Trestles usually to get some real CA goodness. Silverstrand is not to far from Malibu with better wave quality when it's on. Even further north is Rincon and well Rincon is Rincon. Further south you have Trestles that is awesome and further south, Cardif and SD has great waves. Sorry you had to surf longboard waves on your short boards! Maybe pickup a cheep foamy at Costco if you go back to Malibu!

This was interesting!
It is iconic but...I Never cut anyone off there but Got my 2nd worst beat down there by a psychotic local. Sad, I was with a couple of famous guys. Didn’t matter. Took a fin cut to the taint also. I prefer County line, some secret spots up there or El Capitan. Always good food there though.
