You kind of touched on it now but one thing that has made my pop up way more consistent is the idea of pushing my board under my feet as opposed to 'popping up'' on the board. Might be psychological but the emphasis on pushing down ensures that I'm directly on top of my board rather than being slightly off axis.
"pushing board" has another important effect. That is slightly moving the board to adjust the reaction of the wave so that your body is not compromised when popping up.
As an idea bro, tackle the subject of common injury caused by surfing (shoulder impingement, golfer elbow, knew etc...) so people are aware of what they need to do outside the surf to prevent those injuries which can keep you out of water for so long. Or tips to release pain when it s too late.
Kale I have to thank you for all these videos. Thanks to you I have went from whitewater to catching my first green waves ( really memorable feeling ) and I have shared your tips with other friends that I convinced to try on surfing. I now have a surf group and its all thanks to you and your lessons. I wish you all the best there is in life.
I've been surfing pretty much everyday in San Diego the last 2 months. There were days were I was getting up and riding and loving it. Now I've regressed for whatever reason and your videos are giving me things to work on. Thanks for the video Kale!
When I noticed that adding a last strong extra stroke and pushing down with my chest in this last stroke just before I pop up, this REALLY helped me. You can see it at 5:20 how just before popping up he pushes the board down with his chest :)
Everything you have said has basically reignited with how I’ve approached learning to surf. I’ve trained BJJ for years and our fundamental drills are done from day 1 right up until now 15 yrs later every time we do class. Fundamentals are 🔑. So I prioritised paddling and having a good feel for the board and controlling my board just on flat days and having a connection with my board, this also helped develop some paddle fitness, and on and on. I have friends who won’t go out if it’s flat, not even to paddle. Now I’m super confident in paddling and have far more success in catching waves because my better controlled paddling gives me more time to concentrate on popping up. Really loving the learning of the fundamentals.
Im only been surfing for 2 years, im 40. But im training boxning. I must say that interval training on the heavy bag gives crazy good paddle strength and stamina. Thanks for a great channel, you and @surfinsight is for sure my best help!
Absolutely love your tutorials, the explanations are on point!! It's been so helpful to digest theory while not being able to surf (I live in London) and then put things into practice once you get the chance. Thanks so much :)
that last swiss ball stability exercise is new to me. certainly gonna add it to my training routine. Good luck with the van Kale !! Greetings from Israel
great advice, cheers mate. its amazing you do youtube for free and share this knowledge. great to hear you're getting income from other courses! well deserved
This video is exactly what I needed! Thank you! I am so keen to get out and try these tips. I’ve finally figured how to remain calm and do long deep paddles which is helping sooo much. Before, I was paddling like a maniac and only doing short, shallow paddles (basically I windmilling my arms like a psycho)... as you can imagine I was barely catching any waves and had no time to look around and check my positioning.
You have taught me so much through your channel 🤘🤟👇 you are so helpful and I have been watching you for around a year and I have improved so much so thank you ☺️
Good video 👍🏻 Some tips on how to turn that fast before catching the wave would be good. It took you about one second to turn from facing the wave to ready to paddle!
Another perfect and perfectly timed vid. Very excited for the van series too. Superbly delivered, excellent information and on point as always. Thanks bro. So appreciate your work.
Great video Kale! One thing you may want to discuss in a future tutorial is the best technique for a quick turn, especially on a longboard. Facing the wave is definitely correct, but I can tell you that as a beginner it's slightly terrifying until you get good at the pivot. (And the bigger the board the harder it is to do.)
Just started surfing(use the term very loosely) an 8 foot foamie. Any good tips for the spin or vids that you might recommend as I'm struggling. Cheers.
Another great and useful video. Thanks. A physics FYI: Momentum = Mass * Velocity, so you will never match the momentum of a wave unless you are a huge elephant on a small wave. Nice to see the longboard footage.
Kale, I've never commented any video on youtube. You are doing a really great job helping me and others surfers around the world. The way that you teach and show these exemplas are objective. Hope you having a good surfing trip! Cheers
I really like the use of POV shots in this one, I’d like to see maybe some slowmo POV of how you position for different maneuvers on the wave I think that would be really helpful
Great tips! Glad I found your channel. Never thought of approaching waves like this - definitely can see how there will be a lot less wasted energy during every session. 🤙🏼
Claymation pop-ups are interesting and needed after having both hips replaced. It took about a year to do pop-ups again and then I tore a rotator cuff or maybe two :-)
I just had my left hip replaced in April. The right was done in June of 2020. I'm 60. Arm/ shoulder pain for me is from muscle imbalance, from too much paddling. I have treated this successfully with a training band doing inward, and outward rotations of the arm at waist level. ruclips.net/video/PVdgjHqAes8/видео.html
I am loving your vids Kale. I am a beginner surfer and found your vids very helpful. Is it better for me catch unbroken waves instead of the white water? I find it hard to pop up on white water. Would love to book a lesson with u.
Thanks. It seems obvious that doing on land exercises for strengthening helps you when you get in the water. One of my many problems is that I really don’t prepare in advance on land. I just show up at the beach a few times a summer and think I can surf. I still enjoy it though but my progress is slow.
Thanks Kale! Love your content it has really helped put Me back in the game after 20 plus years. I'm back on My short board it is so fun to ride. I do flat water paddles twice a week for about an hour on a SUP. As it's flat on My side of the island (Vancouver). I like to do lots of push up's along the way and try to keep a constant banana shape. My pop up's are back on and it's fun to surf again. I look forward to giving your exercises a go.
Your videos are sooo good!!! :) and I’m always so lucky to find exact the one which is handling at least one of the things I have to work on: paddle technique and the stability on the board when my paddling has to be faster. My smooth star (Holy Toledo 33“) just arrived and my next step is to order Your program! It’s the first time on a skater for me so I’m practicing on an empty school yard during the summer holiday, the less audience the better :))
All of your videos are super instructive and very helpful! I watch them almost every day, I’m a brand new surfer with a solid month under my belt. Thanks for always posting videos, I also follow you on IG and subscribed to your channel
I surfed up to intermediate during the late 70's in Scotland, then nursing took over and my time much reduced and finally gave out and sold on my 6'10" Malibu. I was surprised that very few surfers ever warmed up as I do when practising martial arts. More than a few times there were guffaws as I did my warm up routine on the beach. I am getting back into the water now aged 60 and waiting on my 5'8"...thanks for the tutorials.
Kale!!! You rock bro! I watched this last night, already caught 2x more waves today than my last session. Purchased your surf skate program but having serious problems locating a surf skate in the US (Hawaii).
Another great one, Kale! Do you have any tips for more consistent front foot placement on pop up? My front foot sometimes lands too far back when I'm on my shortboard; occasionally too far forward, usually on longboards. Happy with where my back foot lands, over the fins. Thanks, man!
*me, trying to find a video like this and feeling frustrated because I need guidance and this is such a crucial piece of surf* *kale, uploading the exact video I need* THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Leaving for a surf trip tomorrow, so this is perfect timing and much appreciated! Subscription notifications coming in clutch 🤙🏼
My pop up is always bad when I have too much wax on my board, so remember kids to always clean your boards and never let too much wax build up. This also helped a bit because my pop up is pretty good I just need to tweak a few things.
I,m 46 and not as simple as I used to be. My pop up is more a 2 part process, not quick but I,m to my feet smoothly on most waves. My knees take a hit sometimes. The best tip I was given is to not hold the rails when standing bit keep your palms flat. This gives less resistance when popping up. On a longboard you have more time as they are more forgiving especially in small to medium clean waves. Us older surfers can still perform tho not like to youngsters. I am always impressed seeing younger surfers really putting it together out there. I surf and skate for the fun of it, not any ego thing so performance isn't so critical tho I still get clean down the line rides when the waves are good. Lockdown had curtailed my surfing this year. Hopefully next year will be better. Stay safe and well folks.
One very minor thing that was huge when I went from a big 8 foot foamie down to a shorter board was to not grab the rails when popping up. I had the habit of having my fingers gently over the sides of the board when popping up, but when the waves were smaller (2-3 foot) I was finding myself losing speed right as I put my hands down, losing the wave. As soon as I forced my hands to be flat on the deck, it’s as if that last burst needed to catch the wave was there. Seems minor, but really helps!
Nice vid as always Kale! If you need any video ideas, I’d love to see techniques how to manoeuvre longer boards - like how to pivot & swing quicker to catch a wave
Lol same here I'm 6 foot 250lbs it's tough for me to catch waves...surfed a few in north Carolina/nj and california...just started in 2017...was a body boarder before that
Best online surf instructor. Full stop. Period.
Aw thank ya

I’ve never heard of doing this. Sounds helpful!
Wanna see that.🏄♂️

At 56 “popping” up is a memory. Happy to still be “getting up”🏄♂️
😂😂😂
Pop Pops
I feel you!
Og respect 🙌
10 - 4 . I just started surfing again after 25 yrs off, 61 now. Gettin up, but not poppin'...lol
I already have a consistent take off but I still watch these because I love them

Thanks for the video Kale!
Brilliant. Been surfing for decades really wish I knew all this back then. Still practicing! You are a great teacher. Well done
Thank you

Would suggest swimming, also great for stamina and develops your back
@@alexandervaltsev6937 Agree on that!

Sick thanks brother
Whaaaat you started living in a van 😱 You’re living the dream Kale! Thanks for this video 🙏🏽
Trying to live the dream
Can’t beat em, join em. Better hurry, all the good parking spots are filling up fast.
that last swiss ball stability exercise is new to me. certainly gonna add it to my training routine. Good luck with the van Kale !! Greetings from Israel
Yew!!! 🎾
Great refresher for an old kook who sometimes has a shit surf, living in a van on east coast would be epic. Bit like being a nomad in Indo
The arrows and positioning highlights were very helpful. The pop up is effortless when you paddle to and take off on the peak.
Sure is

Greetings from Costa Rica to all Surfers out there. Kale... Thanks man.
Thanks You from Mar del Plata Argentina, You ate a good teacher !!!
You are the man. I recommend your stuff to all surfs beginners to advance

I’ve been surfing 20+ years and takeoff is still my weakest point! 😉
I really like the use of POV shots in this one, I’d like to see maybe some slowmo POV of how you position for different maneuvers on the wave I think that would be really helpful
Thank you. I been catching white water to much. Yes, need to be in barrel. Thanks..
Love your videos! Went surfing for the first time after watching the intro videos and nailed it! Caught 3 great ones on my first lesson lol 🌊🏄♂️
Great tips! Glad I found your channel. Never thought of approaching waves like this - definitely can see how there will be a lot less wasted energy during every session. 🤙🏼

You have such informative videos. Thank you for making them, I've learned so much!
Great teaching technique.
I’m doing online maths now and you keeping me entertained as always ❤️. Loved the video so glad you back 👍
😍
tnx for your efforts ... learned a lot from your clips
Positioning is really the big damned elephant in the room! Ciao Kale! Greetings from Italy
💯 ! Graci
Thank you for the tip on positioning! I love the arrow pointing at which part of the wave surfers should be in.
🙌🏽
Great tips. Thanks. Side by side videos are super awesome!
I would love to see a series where you come to Michigan get your take on the Great Lakes.
Thanks. It seems obvious that doing on land exercises for strengthening helps you when you get in the water. One of my many problems is that I really don’t prepare in advance on land. 1. Paddling (2:20)
2. Positioning (4:08)
3. Take-Off (7:30)
This video really helped me! Thank you for your help! Keep posting them!
Thanks for the video Kale, I'm teaching my best friend to surf and I've referred him to your videos!
😍
Glad to find your channel Kale great tips and perfect explanation 👍🤙

Thanks for those tip! Those excercise are right on point!
Thanks for the killer content Kales!
Another good one mate 👍🏻 The arrows on the videos are super useful so please keep on sharing what you see and think in the line-up! Cheers
Okay awesome! Was hoping that made it clearer 😁
I use a foamy (sucks) and this even works for them. THANKS!!!!!!
Great tips! I`ve been having trouble with my pop up for so much time. I`ll try to implement all these lessons in my next session. Thanks bro.
I basically surf like the shitty surfer that catches white water for like a millisecond and falls off
Thanks Kale!

Thank you for your videos. Hope to see you sometimes on the West Coast in France.
Me too 😍 merci
Kale stikes again! Awesome tutorial....ever considered a follow along style surf training workout series at all?
I really like your content. Thank you very much!
Glad you enjoy it!
On steeper takeoffs I find that looking down is helpful sometimes
Great video, think I will watch it again 😀

Awesome bro!! Hmmm. I think SmoothStar can ship to Hawaii ! Try their website
Yes! I ordered one from amazon I believe and it came in A few days the smoothstar helped my surfing insanely
ALLMYT Where are you located? I can’t find any on amazon!
Thanks Kales always helpful
Hey mate! What’s the name of the spot? Waves look incredibly good!
Totally explained perfectly

Could you talk about how to turn your board around quickley when facing a wave!? To see your position

Another cracking tutorial Kale, thank you 🙏

Love your work mate keep it up
I wish you were giving in-water coaching in socal. Seems like you were in OC or SD in the videos.
I'll try these tips tomorrow. Wish me luck

Nice vid as always Kale! If you need any video ideas, I’d love to see techniques how to manoeuvre longer boards - like how to pivot & swing quicker to catch a wave
agreed
I’ve done the pivot and swing stuff before but will cover it again - especially when I receive my new longboard 😍😍
Nice tips. But a question: How to stay as long as possible looking at the wave if we are using a longboard?
Same principles apply
Dang my pop up is pretty bad so this helped a lot
Lol same here I'm 6 foot 250lbs it's tough for me to catch waves...surfed a few in north Carolina/nj and california...just started in 2017...was a body boarder before that
