I used to surf (small FL waves) when I was a teenager but I'm now 48. I have two issues now, one is my shoulder damage and the second is I have asthma attacks. I don't have the swimming confidence anymore. Is wearing some type of life vest an option? Have you met any other people who wear a vest for surfing?
Man I wish they had You Tube in 1979 when I was 11 and my cousins were "teaching" me to surf. They would just laugh at me and call me a kook when I made all these mistakes.
I started surfing a week ago and practiced by myself without lessons. I watched this video before going to ocean and many times during the week. Definitely helped me a lot! Baby steps were passed shortly. Thank you Kale 🏄
Just wanted to share something I learned yesterday in the surf. Looking where you are going has had a surprising effect. I’ve been positioning well close to the peak but bottling it when in the right spot, either by stopping paddling or pulling off because the drop looked too steep or the wave too critical as I look back to the peak. But by looking in the direction of the breaking wave and not forward or up to the peak, it looks way less steep and more makeable and I have the confidence to go for it. Having broken my neck on a MTB and having my confidence broken, this was a game changer. My banana is also very very active now.
Great video KB. I wanted to make one comment though in relation to the “pop up”. I don’t think you should use this term as it’s not a “pop up” but rather a transition to your feet. In slow motion there is four stages. 1. Push up through the arms, raising to chest above the board. 2. Plant the back foot by slightly bending the knee and rolling the same side hip upwards forming a tripod platform. 3. Slide the front foot up and place it in the middle of the board behind the hands. 4. Slowly rise and transition to your feet, pointing with your leading hand to where you want to go. If you watch yourself or Kelly (in your vid), in slow motion, you will clearly see each phase. I’m not a coach but I had a lesson 20yrs ago when I was learning and this was what I was taught. I have taught my boys and friends kids this method and they all pick it up straight away. Cheers. Rowdy. 👍😃
I recently took my first surf lesson and I am, of course, making all of these mistakes. Thank you so much for breaking everything down and making it easy to understand. I'm excited to start working on these corrections!!! :D
hey Kale! re-watching this for the 3rd time across a few months... now that I'm comfortable catching lots of waves, what I struggle the most with now is posture and the different style. Whether I try a more flowy-longboard style, or to perform more turns, I inevitably end up doing the "poopman". A new video dedicated to postures and styles would be SO helpful!!
Love this channel - very informative in a practical way. Popping up more slowly and controlled has helped me tremendously. Before I was catching about 25% of the waves, now I am starting to catch about 75% and this gives me more opportunity to work on improving other parts. Awesome job, Kale!
Man I love watching these vids! Even though I’m not a beginner it’s awesome to see other people’s break downs of the basics and learn from the ground up how to have a solid foundation
Sliding the feet through during pop up tips were very helpful out in the ocean the other day! It made a huge difference in my progression! I would usually pop up too fast that I loose my balance
Another 'en pointe' presentation. It's taken me a while, but I think I've consistently eliminated looking down and now always looking at the wave as I'm paddling in. It is a 'game changer'. Also now paddling, pretty much, without fatigue and with more speed - a lot of effort improving paddling, but very liberating. Tips on positioning and what to look for in wave colour and texture are spot on. I'm still struggling a bit with speed generation and bigger waves, but it's all a work in progress - one that is so much fun!
So true Ivan. I started sitting on my boogie board before getting back into surfing an it is such a relief - also somewhat relaxing. It took a while to master it but so rewarding
My top tip would be don't fight the white water when paddling out, in addition to getting tired too quickly you will often be in the way of someone on a wave. Find the channel without broken water to paddle out.
thank u so much for making these vids! They really help. Once im up on the board im great but for me its just the transiton from my belly to my feet and then picking which waves are best cause i seem to go for every wave good or bad.
This video really helped me, i have been surfing for about a year now in and out but have struggled to get past this whole pooping up stage and this video made me realise the mistakes and fixed them thanks :)
I used to body board as a kid and quit 10 years ago but relatively recently started up surfing. I was still able to paddle properly, duck dive, select waves, etc. and that has honestly helped so much lol I’d hate to have to start from the very scratch as an adult. These videos are helpful though to think about what I could be doing wrong and get myself to (hopefully) improve quicker
1 - Don't pop up too early, stabilise, take a momentary prone position before sliding your feet on the board 2 - Rest your back muscles by sitting towards the tail of the board to save yourself a lot of energy 3 - Learn the language of waves, the lower the gradient the more time it will allow you to adapt and take the wave 4 - Build up enough momentum, paddling as fast as the wave you want to watch 5 - Become a banana, build up your back and side muscles 6 - Don't look down. Look at were you want to go 7 - Keep your center of gravity low to increase stability and control
Hey from the USA. Thanks for the tips. This video just started playing I didn't no it was about surfing. But I learn about swimming technics and not getting caught in a rip. I only learn to swim under water and never learn to float. But I've taught so many kids to swim underwater and they learn to swim on top of the water
Just rediscovered my love of surfing after years off. Loving the videos, awesome content, although I feel like I could definitely be "the guy doing it wrong here" in most of these videos 😬😂 Cheers! 👍
Yes that tip to take a pause before popping up is golden. Wait a split second for the board to get a little bit of speed and pop up low to keep your balance, then stand. Take your time and keep low.
I see what you did there, the crown on top of your head was no mistake :D Mr sea Viking🥦 I realized I used to looked down a lot too and quickly tried to correct myself, mostly because I sometimes nosed dive when I tried to stand up, so when I looked down I tried to make sure my weight wasn't too far forward and my board wasn't going to nose-dive. I guess with more practice, this move will become muscle memory and I can avoid looking down at all times.
Greatest tips ever and the most relatable from when I started surfing, hoping to regain my skills and reapplying these techniques when I get back to the water! Thank You for the most useful tips!!!!!
I look down because I am mesmerized how the board glides int the water and start day dreaming and ends in the greatest wipe out of the session lol... Thanks for exposing my errors my hermano! Stay safe bruva!
Had to dig my surfboard out of the shed after 10-15 years (too long to remember exactly) to paddle out to go cliff jumping and was like WTF 😮, why did I stop, was in love all over again, granted I was barely able to stand up before so was like a total beginner again, after working out the volume board I need the way you said my old board was 15 litres too small, so went out and got myself a new 47l 6'6" pod mod and the difference is night and day, just on my Third surf of the week and already riding unbroken waves 🏄🏼♂️, thanks to your videos @KaleBroccoli I'm progressing like i didn't think possible, just small adjustments like paddling technique, reading conditions and how to and the right way to pop up have made a massive difference and can't wait to get back in the 🌊, cheers brother 💪
This has to be one of the best surf tutorial videos ever. My issues seem to be as I'm a beginner is I just cannot get enough time out in the ocean. Trying to fit it in around work, other hobbies, social occasions and sleep. As soon as I get free time the swell is not there and sometimes I just go out anyway and become a piece of trash for the ocean to chew up and spit back on the beach ;-; If the swell is there, its usually too big and I don't want to get in the way of the other surfers who know what they are doing.
+1 for paddling technique being an underrated skill to learn! For years, I asked a lot of experienced surfers what I should know about how to paddle...they just kinda shrugged and said "I dunno...paddle hard I guess?". Over the past year, I've learned a lot about paddling form and technique, mostly from videos like Kale's and as much time in the water as possible.
1:41 The popup is not a burpee - so true, but Its funny how so many instructors teach the pop-up on land - like a burpee. So of course beginners go out there and get disoriented when they try to popup like a burpee on the water in the same way.
I've been watching your videos since long time and helped me to improve a lot. Thank you very much for that! I was wondering if due this "no surfing moment" you can give us some exersies to practice tuns with surf skates. So far is the only surf I do now... I've been doing some drills with water bottles but I am not really and expert just creative... Cheers!!
Making me feel really good in where I'm at with my practice knowing I am actively learning a lot of this stuff as I go. Man though, positioning, positioning, positioning, I wish I could remove that word from my dads vocabulary...
I love your video's and they are very informative. You've helped improve my surfing significantly over the past year so thanks for that. As a point of feedback: It's a little annoying to keep seeing video's with thumbnails and titles like "You're doing it wrong" and "Stop doing this". It's just such an old fashioned way of teaching, to tell people what not to do instead of what to do. You could easily call the video "7 easy ways to improve beginning surfing" to keep the positivity of the rest of the video in the title too :)
Great video! I just started surfing last summer, sadly I only had three weeks at the ocean, but still I wish I`d watched this before!!! I made a lot of these mistakes, but I`m missing what your supposed to do when youre not standing up enough. That happended to me like all the Time, because I didnt want to be the robot dude ;-) Anyone a tip what helps if youre not standing up enough?
He makes a good point on the pop up to pause for a quick moment in prone however this is wave specific. There are times where the wave is breaking FAST and there’s no time to pause ha
I would like you to cover what is the best board, and how do you go about selecting the board due to your weight and the size of the waves where you’re surfing😊
Hey mate! For sure. It’s such a tricky part of the surfing experience that most people navigate blindly! So I’ve actually just created a detailed, super informative online course for people to actually independently formulate their own perfect surfboard which they can use as a guide to purchase! I, unfortunately, am spread too thin as it is so can’t really give you any personalised advice without seeing you surf from a coaching perspective - so this is the absolute best advice I can give; jump in the online course ‘The Ultimate Surfboard Buying Guide’, watch all the lectures and use the formula to work out which board is best for you based on your abilities, weight, height and ability level! It’s right here at thesurfersroadmap.com/p/the-ultimate-surfboard-buying-guide Hope this helps mate! Thanks for reaching out :) Kale.
Hi! This quarantine is killing me! I need go to the sea 🌊 I’m even thinking in getting a ‘balance board’ for home. Is this useful for surfing training??
I think it is really usefull, balancing our body on the board is key in surfing, the balanceboard with different positions (different stances, twists) might help for balance. what kales maybe means is, that it has nothing to do with the feeling of surfing or the muscel training for surfing nor with the technic, and still i love it and think it wil help you in the end
I have a question!! So I was wondering do you think it's too late to start from scratch learning to surf at 15 or 16 to become pro before adulthood?? I've been wanting to learn how to surf since I was very little (like 4 or 5 years old) but just recently moved to a state with better beaches in general. I'm inspired by a lot of pro surfers and influencers including u to one day become one of the top pro surfers, but I'm not sure if I'll get there in time.
I had two introductory surf lessons a month ago and got as far as riding a wave in the kneeling position (last step before standing up). Is this a good or bad progress? What wave duration should a beginner go for? I had breaking waves about 8 seconds long at most; some were less than 5 seconds. I learned the hard way that a wave less than 0.5 m doesn't work at all.
Hi Kale, I am on a long board right now. As I was sitting on my board reading waves and deciding which one to catch, I always find myself not having enough time to turn around and paddle for that wave. Are there any tips on how to turn my long board around quickly so I have enough time to paddle for a wave? Thx so much!
I know I'm not kale, but I have some tips that I use :). #1- if you see a wave forming and it looks good, turn around immediately and paddle for it because of it ends up being sucky just back out and get the next one. #2- do lots of leg and arm exercises so you can have the strength to turn that big longboard around quickly. #3- don't be afraid to just have to paddle into a different place of the wave so you can get a nice ride.. Surf on! Have a great day 🤙
Kales, have been surfing for a while and my backhand is inferior to my forehand because most of the waves I surf are rights. Could you do a video on improving backhand surfing for intermediates. Thanks
Test drove my new Superfish today after riding a 9'0 for the last year and it was a humbling experience to get used to paddling a smaller board w/ less buoyancy. I was able to find stability in "activating the banana", but noticed that as I did my legs rise up behind me. I started using my feet as a counter balance while I paddled, and it felt natural and I think it was allowing me to paddle faster. Is this good technique or am I starting a bad habit that I should break now?
I think people should look up when catching waves but head and shoulders above board to send weight over nose to get that extra push onto wave. very important.
Im a beginner using a long board and my surf instructor told me to stand tall when i was riding the wave. Also how do you tell which direction to break when you feel like you caught the wave?
Thanks for tuning in team! More advanced video coming next week... or I could do a workout follow along for those stuck indoors ... thoughts?
I personally would like both but if I had to have one, a more advanced version
i would like advanced video if possible

@BrandonComedicSoup Best to hire different boards and find out which suit you imho
I was wondering, where do you serf? 😅
'when u think u should popup, then paddle a little more'...best advice that improved my surfin

I'm inspired by a lot of pro surfers and influencers including u to one day become one of the top pro surfers, but I'm not sure if I'll get there in time.
Go for it! Enjoy every wave!
Love this video! I definitely look down too much and too straight. Been doing the mobility routine which has helped with my tight hips
Awesome so good!! Got some more workouts coming 😁😁
@@KalesBroccoli I look forward to it. I also went surfing today and really concentrated on looking up, it helped so much! Thank you :)
Oh my god I found this so helpful I gotta give this dude my sub 👏🏽
Great film cheers mate

Great video mate! Juicy stuff 🌊🌊🏄♀️

Surf on! Have a great day 🤙
Hope it helps ❤
Kales, have been surfing for a while and my backhand is inferior to my forehand because most of the waves I surf are rights. Could you do a video on improving backhand surfing for intermediates. Thanks
Awesome vid! Thanks for the tips!
Absolutely loved it. Going out tomz. Have things you say in my head .. thank you so much for yr time and effort passion and belief !
🙌🏽🎉
Test drove my new Superfish today after riding a 9'0 for the last year and it was a humbling experience to get used to paddling a smaller board w/ less buoyancy. I was able to find stability in "activating the banana", but noticed that as I did my legs rise up behind me. I started using my feet as a counter balance while I paddled, and it felt natural and I think it was allowing me to paddle faster. Is this good technique or am I starting a bad habit that I should break now?
Bringing the legs up really works especially on the longer boards - hard to do on shorter boards
These were some great suggestions, Thanks!
I think people should look up when catching waves but head and shoulders above board to send weight over nose to get that extra push onto wave. very important.
Im a beginner using a long board and my surf instructor told me to stand tall when i was riding the wave. Also how do you tell which direction to break when you feel like you caught the wave?
