      @@jondidier2282 Your comprehension of what's written above is clearly inaccurate. So, in the same vein - If your reading comprehension is still poor after a lifetime of education - stop trying to read and comment online? Try audio visual engagement, maybe? Not to be discouraging, but perhaps it's just not for you.

      @@ceeweedsl I rode for ten years like the above and there wasn't much I didn't know about surfing and growing up in Southern California. He mentioned 10 years experience surfing and he learned more from a beginners video than experience. If I thought I was no better than a beginner after doing something for 10 years, I personally would try something else. I'm just saying. Also, notice the thumbs up versus thumbs down replies. I'm just saying. There's no teacher like experience.

    • @ceeweedsl
      @ceeweedsl 5 лет назад +42

      @@jondidier2282 Not everyone is in your situation and "years" is a time frame, not a wave count. One can go to the beach with family every memorial day and log 30 rides a year for ten years. Plenty of people do "surf" that way. Even taking a lesson or two. Or you can go out 5 days a week over a year at the same break and really learn "fast". One can live right by some marginal beach break and get a lot of time in the water but few rides. Or get out to Old Man's every weekend and progress 100x faster, then move over to Trestles. It's not all the same. One can start learning at 16 yo or at 60 and that's huge also. So many factors. I agree that the video had a couple beginner tips and was not exactly brimming with subtle knowledge tho ! cheers

    Despite the common thumbs down, which lack constructive criticism or why they give it a thumbs down, I'm beginning to get back into surfing (So. Cal Native) after a 40 hiatus. Although I'm in really good shape (working out no less than 3x a week for 40 years) and blow away most guys in their late 30's and older, I found this pretty useful in terms of reintroducing myself to the fundamentals. The instructor was very communicative and patient with his student. I began with a Boogie Board for a couple of weeks in order to re-acclimate myself to the surf. It's like getting back on a motorcycle and eventually getting on the freeway. At first, it's like "wtf! am I carzy or what!", then your mind begins to adjust to the conditions. I found the same taking the Boogie Board out before my board. It also allowed me to spark my memory with how waves form....very different depending on each day and conditions, reading them, and most importantly, respecting the oceans power. So here's to getting back on those So. Cal waves!

    Keep at it man. It can be a lot to take in all at once. I am by no means a "great" surfer. But he nailed teaching the fundamentals very elegantly without over explaining and throwing a ton on information at you. When he said "muscle memory", I thought wow not enough people explain why these techniques are so crucial when starting. I had so many terrible habits to unlearn when I was set in my ways a while back. This video is an excellent what to/what to not do. Building from the stroke to positioning your body, while telling you what will happen if your foot placement, body, and arms aren't in sync. And in such a small amount of time too. That makes this one of the best beginners videos I've seen. Keep on building those core fundamentals and it just becomes second nature. Fantastic video!

    I just had my first surf lesson yesterday. I paid $120 for two hours to be told to keep my legs together and a crash course on how to stand up. Compared to this video, my lesson was trash. All of these tips, aside from keeping your legs together, were never addressed in my class. Even the paddling I found I was doing wrong after watching this video. I was definitely chest down on the board paddling. Thank you for your in depth explanations and details on the how and why’s. Other instructors should take note that this is the proper way to instruct.

      Hi Curly!
      I think you might need a bigger board, I started out on a 9 foot foamie and it was so stable! I ride regular foot and pop up on such a big board was a piece of cake because I could lift my hips by anchoring my feet on the back of the board
      I am now on a 7 ft board, and it's super light and awesome but pop up is a bit more precarious and less stable.Because the board is shorter, I now have to pop up using my knees instead of my feet with the longer board
      So consider buying a bigger board just to get you started; so much fun and when waves are small, the bigger board catches them easier due to high volume
      Best of luck!

    Good video to show my beginner daughter. A common mistake I see beginners do is when they go to stand up they grab the board rails or push up too far forward to the nose. This may be ok with steeper, bigger waves when taking off on the swell, but not for beginners in smaller less sloped waves. Beginners often times bury the nose or the front rails almost every time. Remember to stay back on the board. The best tip this guy gave was to turn your hips forward after standing. This helps center the body on the board giving you control.
