"Kooks are down there, brother" - whether that was a real interaction or a set up for this film, it's amazing how quickly people forget where they started. I've never in my life called someone a kook, just because they are trying to learn something new. I only call myself one, when I miss a section :)

I think it is based on lowering others to somehow feel superior. I would say it goes hand in hand with insecurity. Even so, I will keep believing this was staged, most surfers I was out with were ready to help

the last shot of the video.. when it was panning around him holding his softie and staring into the ocean. That's when I called him a kook. I call every douche bag at the beach taking Instagram selfies a kook as well. But never someone trying to learn. There's a dude I see regularly out on a softie at my local spot that started surfing a few months ago. I give him s hoot everytime he gets a good ride.

I sometimes call people kooks, not when someone is bad but when people act like they’re surfers and r just kinda posing or when someone is just doing something really stupid like putting their fins backwards or wax the bottom of the board

@@kingslavson9166 pretty sure the op took my initial response down because I called you a retard too many times. Suffice it to say that you misread my comment if you think my attitude is why people don't like to try new things. I clearly stated that I cheer on the guy who is learning to surf and rides his softie at my local spot. But I completely stand by my assertion that people taking social media selfies at the beach are massive kooks. They are. Social media is steadily ruining our society. And all you narcissists who disagree with me are part of the problem.

The best moment you get besides standing up for the first time on a wave (to me, anyway) is the carving. It feels like the board has a blade attached to it and you are running that blade through soft butter. Feelsgoodfam

Yeah! The two weeks of learning what it feels like when you know you're going to be lifted up so that you can actually get up.
The cursing about the board just not being the right one, but in my case... It actually was for my situation on the East coast.
I started on a 9'0 soft top, but I could never turn it with the wind driven waves that I was in. Went to 17th Street WRV and bought a 6'4 fish that's a double to single concave thruster that turns on a dime for a fish. I still use it to this day, after a brutal 19 years surfing hurricane swell and loan it out every chance I can to help someone else.

For anyone reading this that’s new to surfing- if you’re at the point where you popping up, but you keep falling down, always look to where you want to go. Resist the urge to look at the position of your feet on your board when you pop up. Keep your eyes trained on where you want to go and trust that your body will handle the rest.
If you look down, you go down.

Very true. I am a beginner but not a stranger to board sports.. i skated for about 8 to 10yrs.
Even though i have balance and pop up at the mid center of my board, there's still that tendency you mention, looking at my feet. Also to ad to your comment, it helps to point your chest in the direction you want to go. And giving your board time to respond. It's not like with a skateboard, where you get instant result of any inputs. It seems to have a bit of a lag, especially longer boards.

That was cool, I'm a beginner-intermediate surfer. I've been surfing whenever I can and it's so cool, I love it. Learning from my experience, I need to do my take-off a little bit later, as you tell us in the video. I dream that we had the surfing season in my country, the sea water is so calmed here in winter. There's very few days when the waves are in order, but those days are so cool. Thank you RB! Aloha! 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾

super accurate! reminded me some great memories..of last year lol (I'm still learning)
experienced surfer : -the waves are not good for me. Want me to help you one-on-one?
me beginner, feeling embarassed but super grateful : -heu yeah..of course..well if you have nothing else to do, thanks!
Incredible the people you meet this way :)

I like the little things in this video, like how in the beginning he was carrying the board the wrong way and getting wax all over him, and at the end of the video he’s holding it the right way

That's how I started. Bought me 1st board, went to the tourist breaks, watch the big kids too and spent the next 7 hours trying to stand, which happensed in the last 30 minutes of my day. When mom got there to pick me up I had rode maybe 2 or 3 slush faced waves 2 footers. Best summer ever!

I’ll never forget the first wave I ever rode. It was a left hander surfing my backhand, it was in the evening and the sun was glistening on all the perfect curves of the wave as it was peeling.

As someone learning atm I have just past the apologetic retrieval of the wetsuit from bin (metaphorically speaking) went back out only to suck for 1 hour and then eventually I stood up and surfed one wave. Once I had done that I popped up and surfed multiple waves over the next 2 hours having an absolute ball. Just keep practising 👍I'm almost 42.

As 'training', when I was 9, my surfing instructor took us 1 by 1 out when it was rough, made us paddle out, and lifted us over 10 ft waves and then dropped us. It seems quite nasty but it actually really prepares you for the shocks you get when you wipe out unexpectedly. It seemed horrible of him at the time though.

I still want to do it but I'm going to college in West Virginia this fall and I'm really struggling with that fact that I won't be near a beach.
