Four years ago, I decided to learn surfing, i would say rather say it happened along the way. After a week or so, I managed to stand on the board and catch small waves. But there was one day that stood out. Despite many falls and tumbles in the waves, I found myself riding them at least ten times. It was pure joy, and I couldn't stop smiling all day long. And believe it or not, I had never even seen the ocean before that day-I was 28! Watching your surfing journey, Tim, brought all these memories flooding back, and I couldn't help but chuckle and smile along with your adventures with wonderful joyful people. Thank you for sharing such a heartwarming video it's inspired me to revisit those cherished memories once more.

He's spot on that the actual surfing is the easy part. Reading the ocean and swells and positioning yourself is the hard part. It actually does take years for that part before you can surf different spots and adapt.

Cool video! I finally realised my dream of learning to surf at the age of 40. While it's probably been the most challenging thing I have ever done, at the same time it is the most joyful, beautiful and spiritual thing I've experienced too. The feeling of riding a wave is indescribable and I'm only catching baby green waves at this stage! So cool, I hope you get to keep it up.

I took my first lesson after my birthday. I was walking down a pier in the afternoon over last summer and I saw people surfing. I though , that looks fun!
I booked my 1st lesson the following weekend and ever since then I’ve been taking a he lesson twice a month. I am 2 1/2 hr from the beach. It’s been challenging specially on the winter. But I love it!
I am impress how quickly you got it! I hope you continue doing it.

Wonderful, brother, im 40 and starting and its one of the most beautiful and challenging things ive ever done, for 5 days you did amazing, couple of tips that helped me a lot:
1.- Where you see is where you go.
2.- Dont change your board unless you dominate 100% the board you have.
3.- Practice the pop ups on land, but nothing beats the practice in the water, just go surfing.

Tim - huge fan of your podcast! Thing is laird is almost 60 so I believe this may be from a bit ago (?). But this looks really good for never surfing, but I imagine you have done it before. It will be very hard to advance in surfing if you live in Texas. I surf in SoCal all year so I’ll surf with you if you ever want to surf in la or oc. Also, anytime I take people out who’ve never done it they are usually exhausted after 30 minutes of paddling so you did very well.

the lazy uke music and the wipe outs on the paddle board🤣🤣 it reminded me of my own falls the other day. Every wipeout you're learning what not to do and you're also learning that the discomfort of eating shit is not so bad. What Tim said, "feel more, think less" is what works, you just gotta feel it take you and trust in yourself. Happy surfing!

Incredible work Tim! It's so much harder to learn than it looks. Watching others via video makes it look real easy. It took me 3 weeks of going out every single day before I could even stand up on a wave 😢. (Though that was a short board and no help) It would be another 4 months before I finally experienced riding on the face of the wave and getting the sublime feeling you mentioned (that was kinda lucky too. Right place / right time). I felt I was pretty athletic, knew how to skateboard to some extend and snowboard. It's quite the learning curve and I'm still learning each time I go out.
I felt the hardest part of surfing is not the actual surfing.. Most of the time you're just waiting. . Unlike snowboarding where you just get off the lift and go.
Then paddling for a wave when 4-5+ others are going for it. Really diminishes the amount of waves you actually get. And where I learned to surf and I imagine many other places people who actually know how to surf aren't super enthusiastic for a beginner to come and then not catch a wave.

When I learned to downhill ski eons and eons ago, I remember that is exactly what my instructor, ski pro taught me. You have to work the mountain and it doesn’t matter at what the altitude you are. If you’re skiing the bunny hill or the mountain top when you get off a gondola. If it’s an easy run or a double black diamond. You work the mountain make sure your skis are tuned up sharpened and waxed for the conditions of the snow. -- I never forgot that, believe I had 3 or four classes. I remembered his words every time I felt the run was challenging. I skied within my skill level and gradually took tougher runs. I cannot ski anymore (I’ve done X- country as well as water skied ) I have wicked osteoarthritis and waiting new hips and knees. I also have a rheumatoid issue that affects my low back/spine and I don’t have a death wish not that way, could be very painful. 🤣

    • @kulfonbustardo1588
      @kulfonbustardo1588 9 месяцев назад

      The fuck it does!
What part of surfing is the same as being ripped up by a 8m screamer halfway to base and then spat out the back so hard your wing gets thrown beneath you and end up in a cascade of collapses that puts you into your wing or even more fun everythings perfectly find coming into land 50m agl and wind changes direction and a dusty forms and you get slung around like a cat holding onto a ceiling fan.
Im only 20 years into my surfing probably chewed thru a dozen boards before i got a nice quiver of js barons even in double overheads 15ft swell etc that ive encountered all i gotto do to survive is dive deep beneath the wave. Its nice and tranquil i calm down instincively when im being held down for ahwhile and the actual rideing of the wave is just enjoyable.
Tim ferris if your reading this. People can will and do die just learning to paraglide. In no other sport do i see my friends almost always anyone who is at a world cup level they get into a little adventuresque vol biv sort of expedition after a few seasons of that they end up paralysed or dead.
You can see waves. You cant see the air. We can see a fair bit of the air under certain conditions but if youve been airborne for 11 hours shits gonna get squirrelly
